The Selkie wrote:Raidri grinned, throwing me a glance.
"Yeah, I gathered as much.", he told Chris and bowed his head to Janina, refraining from kissing her hand. "The pleasure is mine, Janina, Chris."
He let a beat pass.
"I believe, that you heard it already, Chris, but I heard a lot about you.", Raidri told Chris, nodding in my direction. "Celina wasn't exactly sparing in her praises of you." He grinned. "Though, I believe, that she exaggerated a bit... not many men can stop an enraged vixen."
I blushed a bit, especially as the Khana and Marla looked from one to the other with surprise in their eyes.

Amy laughed.
"I can imagine!", she said with a grin, "I believe, I even saw a few clips on the net already... anyway, CGI versus real people is always an easy fight for the real people. Nothing can replace them and their appearance, individuality, even their faces. Especially when they are supposed to do stupid things!"

Janina wouldn't have minded her hand being kissed a lot, but it was his own decision whether or not to do so.
Chris had to grin. "I've already learned that I actually don't need to introduce myself a lot in here" - he said. "Seems like just doing the obviously right thing, and nothing else, can bring you a lot of fame in these parts."
"So can exaggerating a bit, obviously" - Janina interjected, laughing.
"And maybe not many men can stop an enraged vixen" - Chris continued. "But an eagle can."
Chris preferred not to mention the incident with Raidri's oldest sister; another time the enraged vixen had needed to be stopped - this time by Mr. Folaíochta and the Khana.

Dragan had to laugh again.
"You see" - he said, "this is what we've always tried to sell as our recipe of success. Being as authentical as possible, without all that bling-bling. Damn, even our action movies, who are genuinely not made for being realistic, are made with real stuntmen and car racers, and explosives always used in a controlled manner, if even - in lieu of CGI. Sadly, it all apparently fails to fit the taste of the international audience ... really a pity, but on the other hand, we're not gonna give the essential parts of our film culture up just for it to sell better - as I said, other countries are just better at this, anyways, so we focus on what we're good at."
Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

"Eh... that one is a bit iffy...", Raidri said and grinned, "And you are talking to an Eagle."
"The pilot of one, you mean?", I said with a grin, making him nod before I explained: "Raidri is an air racer, flying, amongst other planes, a Sciathán Iolar, a long-range fighter from the thirties."
"Wonderful plane.", he admitted with a smile, before he turned a lot more sober: "But yes, doing the right thing can get you a lot of fame, especially when a Selkie sings your praises, for it is the right thing... and too many people, Selkie included, would not do the right thing."
"That, and our little Cel is a good singer!", Cao added with a grin.
I blushed.

"That sounds like a good philosophy.", Amy said with a nod, grinning as well, "Bugger them all, if they don't want to see our movies and TV-shows, we continue to make them as we always did, see if we care!"
Macha, still listening to them, added in German, which would have sounded more appropriate a century ago: "And make them not for the sake of money, but for the sake of the art and the beautiful.", she spoke, smiling, "Much like someone modeling and photographing do."
Amy agreed with a nod.

Chris nodded. "Ah, so you're gonna run at the Mianach Race, too, eh? I'm already looking forward to watching it, I must say - I've never been to an Air Race as of now, only to car races."
"You mean real car races, or just normal road trips?" - Janina joked. "Though, I could imagine that you'd just need to put wings on your car and you'd take off into air, anyways. A nice air race above the highway."
"That one's iffy" - Chris commented, but had to grin a bit.

Dragan was glad that one the one hand, Macha understood them, so she would not feel excluded, and on the other hand, she did not speak some medieval dialect of German (his Middle Low German skills were ... limited, to say the least), but, considering how long her last visit to a German-speaking country dated back, a fairly modern variant. Although some grammatical constructions reminded him of the novels by G.T. Varreslee he had read back in school.
"That's exactly the point" - he said. "While we still haven't entirely given up the hope that the great breakthrough may come once upon a day - hope dies last, after all -, we don't make them for a commercial sake. Even if so, we have a large domestic market and audience that mostly does make sure that it will pay off at the end of the day. And from what I know from the mediacorps I've already seen from inside so far, it does work quite fine."

Both conversations, the one between Raidri and Chris, and between Dragan, Amy and Macha, was interrupted by a flute, Enya playing a short signal of the Pikemen with skill.
That caught our attention, especially as she stood next to our boss, who smiled.
He then began to speak, not in English, but in Selkie. I translated for the benefit of Janina and Chris, whispering. I knew, that Amy did something similar for Dragan and the few others not capable of speaking Selkie got their own translators as well.
"Good evening, everyone.", he began politely, a few people groaning a bit. "I'll make it quick, I promise... I'm not Amina-Khana's boss, so don't worry!" That caused a few chuckles, as the Sultana's ability to give long and winded speeches was almost legendary by now. "I'm yours. And as your boss, it is my greatest honour and pleasure to welcome you all to the Archipelago again, for our annual meeting and celebration of a good year. A few faces came to us, a few left us, a few got older, a few got younger and a lot are still as beautiful as they were, but at the end of the day, we all came here for our little beach party, with friends and acquaintances, better halves and people, who make everything we are possible from behind the scenes. Those people, I thank very much. Without you, we would be lost!"
Cheers at that, a few people blushing.
As that had died down, our boss continued: "But the rest of you, you are equally important for our success... so.", he raised a bottle to a toast, the rest of us grabbing something as well. "Here's to you, me lads and me lassies. May your beauty shine eternally! Slán!"
At that, the toast was accepted with a hearty Slán! from all of us, raising our various non-alcoholic drinks for the toast, our boss beaming with pride - before he returned to the grill.
Enya, Big Enya, smiled as she stood there, uncertain for a moment, then joined by her boyfriend, the two of them looking into each others eyes... and lifting their instruments, beginning to play an improvised piece, a dance, by the sounds of it, providing a wonderful background music.
I grinned at my boyfriend.
Amy looked to Dragan with a smile of her own and hope in her eyes, waiting, just like me, for a question...

Amy looked to Dragan with a smile of her own and hope in her eyes, waiting, just like me, for a question...

A flute signal tune played by Big Enya interrupted the Lillos' conversation in order to catch everyone's attention. Mr. Drisiúr prepared to give his speech, in Selkie language - Amy simultaneously translated for Dragan; Cel did the same for Chris and Janina.
They had to laugh when he mentioned that he wasn't Amina-Khana's boss, but theirs - indeed, they had heard about Razia-Sultana's legendary long speeches.
They continued listening to their translations, cheering at the part where he stated that they would be lost without them.
And of course, they raised their lemonades and entered the "Slán!" chorus.
A moment after that, Enya and her Finnegan started to play an improvised dance. Chris caught Cel's grin, knowing what she meant. He turned to Janina and tapped his temple with his flat hand once, to tell her see ya' later. Janina grinned and nodded. Chris got up, waiting for his girlfriend to join him, while Janina had another sip and slightly leaned back (as much as it was possible on a beer bench), preparing to watch them.
Meanwhile, Dragan got up, too, grinning at Amy and extending his hand to her. In a broad Platt dialect, which to get used to could not harm, after all, he suggested, "Nu, dann jommer ens en bessje jet danze, wa?" ("Now, then let's go dance a bit, eh?").

I smiled as Chris got up and almost automatically joined his side, excusing myself quickly.
I could see, that Marla was whispering something to Cao, the Khana agreeing with a nod, the little blush on the youngest girl's cheeks suggesting, that she was telling (and most likely exaggerating) about Chris' abilities as a dancer, but I didn't mind.
Marla was a nice girl and if Cao would dance with my boyfriend later... she knew the limits very well.
Still, when we arrived in front of the improvising musicians, I couldn't help but smile.
Our Boss-Man had to abandon the grill to one of the lads in favour of being dragged onto the dance floor by his wife, which caused some grins, Young Ilia smiling nervously as around half a dozen girls of his age were sizing each other up for the honour of having the first dance of the evening with him, Raidri was watching his little sisters playing rock, paper, scissors to decide, who would have the first dance with him...
It was adorable, the kiddoes.
"So...", I said to Chris, grinning, "As much as the musicians improvise, we now need to improvise now as well!"

Amy smiled.
"Denn lasse mer mal ditte Tanzbein fliejen!", she replied and took his hand, Then let's swing the dance-leg!
Her smile was radiant, her eyes sparkling like red rubies - if her hairdo had hid real dog ears, they would be standing and the tail wagging like mad. She was happy.

Janina, meanwhile, was not long for long.
"Milady.", a familiar voice spoke behind her, Sir Raidri had arrived back at the fair maiden's side. Although his voice was not loud, he still carried a bit of the bombast from before. "May I ask for the next dance?"
The Khana grinned at the sight, turning back to her charge to leave the two of them a bit of space.

The Khana grinned at the sight, turning back to her charge to leave the two of them a bit of space.

Chris had to grin twice - once when Little Marla and Amina-Khana told Cao something that indubitably had something to do with his dance skills, and when the Boss got dragged off every man's sacred territory, the grill, by his wife. While Raidri Leathchúpla was primarily desired by his sisters, Young Ilia almost got besieged by quite a few girls.
The after-dinner dances had turned Chris much into a routinier, a clear advantage he had now, one more time performing quite well - following the improvised rhythm wasn't much of a problem for him and Cel. Abhcan had quite a lot to do tonight, blessing the two of them.
And no only them. Janina suddenly got asked by Sir Raidri, her noble knightsman - which the fair maiden replied to, "It would be a honor for me, sire! We shalt see if we do as fine on this sandy dancefloor as on the back of a steed!"
The Khana didn't even try to hide her amusement, but left them some space.
With that said, Sir Raidri and Lady Bonrath joined the other dancers. Janina's dancing abilities were far away from the gracility of, say, a Shamsiyyan belly-dancer, but still good enough to include a few decent steps into an improvised dance. Each to their own abilities, after all.
From the corner of her eyes, she saw Dragan with Amy Laoch joining in, too. Out of the three Lillos in here, he was the least trained dancer - nevertheless, for Janina's, Chris', and most certainly even his own surprise, his own improvised dance wasn't even too bad. As if he felt that he had a mission, or something. Not improving Amy's pronunciation of Rhenish dialect, which had been surprisingly good, almost perfect for a Selkie, but rather trying to show decent dancing skills in order to impress her, at least a tiny bit.
But the best performance, in all three Lillos' opinions, was the one by Finnegan and Enya - their playing was great, especially considering that it was improvised; one would notice that they were very experienced. They even could have just listened to it - it was ideal as a background music for everything. And it was good to dance to, even for beginners.
As soon as it would end, they would heartily applaud in any case.

The dance was fun, Chris being really good to the improvised music - the party was getting started!
Abhcan, as fickle as She was with Her blessings, was generous to me, Her Servant-in-training, and my boyfriend. She was also nice to all the others, to Raidri and Janina, to Dragan and Amy, the other dancing pairs...
The twins finally decided who would first dance with their older brother, who took them like a champion dancer, an awful lot of fun to look at, while Ilia got asked by a girl no one had thought: Marla, the Khana's ward, who had danced with Chris earlier, asked him and he accepted. The other girls were so jealous I almost burst out laughing!
But still, the dance was wonderful...
When the first piece was finished, I rose to the tips of my toes and kissed Chris on his lips, a short and loving peck.

Amy was in heaven.
Sure, Dragan was not the best of dancers, but he made the effort and that was the important part. He danced as if the Gods themselves were ensouling his legs and feet.
When Enya and her Finnegan were finished with their song, applause followed.
As that had died down, Amy hesitated for but a moment, then told him: "There is a custom of one dance partner kissing the other after a dance, a show of respect and, sometimes, liking."
She smiled and moved forward, putting her lips softly on his.
While a kiss on the hand showed respect to a function-holder (a kiss on the palm showed respect for the skills of a person, especially warriors), a kiss on the cheek stood for personal respect... a kiss on the lips showed love or at least romantic interest in someone. In this case, there was a bit of a claim attached to it.
The kiss was not deep and there was no tongue involved, but when Amy retreated, she awaited his judgement of her actions.
Would he accept her feelings? Would he refuse? Would he push her away?

Janina's dance partner led her through the dance with a smile, very much enjoying her skills. He had skills, the rhythm and the strength to lead Janina through some interesting moves. He also danced in an appropriate distance, a bit closer then mere friends, but not close enough to be counted as lovers, with her.
He hoped, that she enjoyed his skills as well.
And when the song ended, he smiled at her.
"Would you like a second one as well?", he asked.

Chris went into the knees a tiny bit, so he could give Cel another kiss - also short and loving, no tongue involved.
He had noticed, too, that Young Ilia had chosen Little Marla for the first dance when asked by her; it was, indeed, extremely funny to see how Marla made them all jealous.
Chris would have assumed that Abhcan had taken a day off from Her fickleness - yet, the night was still young. There was so much that could still happen tonight, enough room was left for a whole load of surprises that could happen ...

... like the one Dragan now experienced.
While he had quite been aware that the We're-just-friends thing most certainly would not last for long, it still came unexpected, although he knew that there was definitely more about this than just friendship - he had figured that in like one hour; Amy had something that Janina did not have, and he couldn't even describe what it was (apart from the now most obvious point, namely, romantic interest in him). On the other hand, she must have found something about him that nobody else she had known before him had, and that no one else, not even Janina, had seen.
Whatever. Janina would not get jealous, and Dragan would not, either, if she ended up with another man in here. Frankly, it had always been a question of time until one or both of them would come up with someone else. And apparently, the time was now - although it didn't exactly match with the plan Chris had had for the two of them.
Dragan wasn't entirely sure what exactly he felt for Amy, but one thing was for sure - it was more than just friendship. And old, wise Macha, who had witnessed the first expansion of the city walls of Lillorainen's largest city (and probably had already been alive centuries before Pontrath had been founded), had been right.
"... or liking someone a bit more, right?" - Dragan said. Then, he moved forward in the same manner as she had and gave her a peck on her lips. "You do know how to surprise someone, eh?"

Janina had not noticed what Dragan was up to - and even if she had, she wouldn't have minded a lot, at least she wouldn't have held it against him. On the contrary - she was just as aware of this becoming a thing sooner or later as he was. As soon as she would find out about this, she would probably congratulate him for finally having a romantic experience that did not end up in a disaster.
But for now, she was too busy with Sir Raidri, anyways - whom she smiled at after his last question. She nodded. "Sure I would! You, indeed, do an amazing job on the dancefloor, just as much as on the horseback!"

I smiled, snuggling against his chest, still ready for dancing, this time only closer.
"Ilia sure is going to be a busy boy this evening... maybe even tonight.", I told him with a grin, before I rose on my toes again, whispering into his ear: "Obviously not in the sense the two of us are going to be..."
I blushed, lightly, as I got into position for the next dance and asked, innocence personified, "Another dance, Chris?"
There was a twinkle in my eyes.

Amy, when he had spoken, had been ready for refusal...
...when he didn't, when he moved forwards and kissed her back, she was having a heart attack. Nearly, at least, surprised, pleasantly so, but surprised by the outcome of her actions. He was, to her, more then an attractive face and quite handsome, he made her smile and excited and all fuzzy in her stomach. That he had a good heart and a good head on his shoulders was the icing on the proverbial cake.
When he had retreated, and a second or two had passed, she found her voice.
"I'm not the only one who can surprise people, it seems.", she said and resisted the urge to simply bugger it all and mash her face into Dragan's, but she resisted. "A bit more might be a bit of an understatement, though..."
Her admission was accompanied by a blush, her looking down for a moment, before she met his eyes with a small smile.
"Want to do the next dance as well?", she asked.

"You give me too much credit, fair maiden!", Sir Raidri said, grinning, "I would believe, that Abhcan Herself has graced your feet, but I know, that this was all your own skill."
He kissed her hand in respect of her and that skill.
Did he have a romantic interest in her? He could not answer that, not yet. He certainly liked her, riding and dancing with her, that he could tell.
But more?
"Now we only need for our musicians to end their break.", he said with a small smile.

This time, Chris managed to prevent himself from snorting in amusement - although he did not expect her to come up with certainly things to be busy with right now, he managed to act cool and stay calm. Neither did he blush, nor did he have to grin; he just nodded and smiled, only lightly, not overly. It would have been different back then in Purgatio ... but now, they were boyfriend and girlfriend, certain activities being expected to become a normal thing nobody needed to be ashamed of.
"Another dance, Cel" - he replied. "And ... let's talk about 'later', when 'later' is 'now'."

Dragan quite did notice how surprised Amy was herself. He was sure to know that she just gave it a shot, expressing the feelings she had, or believed to have, and looking what happened. She also seemed to be quite relieved that he did not outright refuse her - yet also surprised about exactly this fact at the same time.
For a short moment, he wished that those brats from back home, who had refused him, could see this ... he had wished the same back then, in that bar in Jillich ... but this was a different level. The more he thought about this, the more sure he was that he had found someone on his wavelength, in a closer sense than with the one he had come to Dumhach with.
He nodded. "Of course I do!" - he said, answering her question.

For a short moment, just a couple of seconds, Lady Bonrath wasn't sure what to say.
She was aware that he was 'just' kissing her hand in respect - a gesture that had become rare, but not entirely unheard of in the Federation -, but it meant a lot to her. She wondered, firstly, whether there was something like a horse rental in these parts, and secondly, whether her noble knightsman would be ready for a little ride tomorrow ...
But that was something she could ask him later on.
"Indeed" - she said now, smiling. "I'm already looking forward to the next dance!"

I smiled at my boyfriend.
"Indeed. Let Future-Cel and Future-Chris worry about these things.", I whispered to my boyfriend.
It had a nice ring to it.
Back in Purgatio, we were just close friends, he insisting, that I didn't sleep next to him in nothing, but insisting, that I wore the by now famous t-shirt (with nothing underneath, but that is another story, you perverts). I had enjoyed his warmth and the feeling of his arm, his heart beating under my ear during these nights.
Back then, when I couldn't sleep despite his presence, I dreamed and wondered how it would feel to have that heart beat for me and me alone... the emotional dreams of a silly girl.
Now it beat for me.
There was a certain giddiness in my eyes as our musicians called for the next dance, a slow and romantic one.

Amy grinned, back on proverbial solid grounds, as she put her arms around Dragan.
She did not know, what went on in Dragan's head, but she had a good idea: That those, who had refused him, who had toyed with him, should look now - now, that he had a gorgeous girlfriend (she allowed herself that little piece of arrogance). It was similar with her.
But now, she had found someone, who she liked, not like a lost puppy, but like a woman, and he liked her back.
With joy in her heart, she took position for the next dance, a slow one, romantic.

The honourable knight was in a bit of a pickle: He liked Janina, she was a charming and pretty lass, no question asked, but... his heart didn't catch fire. It didn't have to, he was sure of that, but still... he wondered, for a moment, where they would be at the end of the night.
One night stand? Friends, with or without benefits? Fellow horsemen and acquaintances?
He did not know.
As the pairs around them rearranged, he whispered to her: "I have a friend here in Dumhach, who rents out a few horses to tourists and his stables to Selkie. Interested?"
The music started, slow and romantic, and while he did hold her, he almost insisted on the appropriate distance between the two of them.
