The Alcohol Thread

Postby The Empire of Pretantia » Wed Jun 20, 2018 8:23 pm

So we have car threads, politics threads, economics threads, ideological threads, and IM threads, but we don't have a thread for the Source and Solution of all life's problems; the S&S, if you would so call it for brevity's sake. The realization came to me just now as I type this in a buzzed state, slowly slipping out of full-on drunkenness. I feel that this isn't really something NS talks about, and though this is a PG-13 forum alcohol consumption is something that's certainly often explored in PG-13 movies; plus not every country has a drinking age of 21 or even 18. So you know what, let's talk about the ambrosia that is alcoholic beverages.

This is also the thread to discuss the legislation, morality, and effects of alcohol consumption. Such topics include prohibition, drinking age, enactment and enforcement of drunk driving laws, and other things relevant to alcohol in our society.

Several questions, although you don't need to answer all or any of them if you don't feel it.
1.) Are you drinking tonight or did you drink last night, and if so how much?
2.) About how much can you usually tolerate?
3.) What's your favorite drink? Type, brand, whatever, answer it how you will.
4.) When did you start drinking, legally or otherwise? Again, an answer is not expected.
5.) What are some funny stories from when you or a friend were drinking? It can be something that was said or done, and it doesn't need to be "Hold my beer" tier stupid.
6.) What's your opinion on alcohol in our society? Need more laws, less? Lower drinking age, higher?
7.) How do you cure hangovers? Need to know for, uh, obvious reasons.

In order for me:
1.) I had two beers, a margarita, a shot of tequila, and a shot of rum tonight. Did the weird thing where you lick salt and lime juice off your hand then drink the tequila too, what's up with that?
2.) TBH I'm a lightweight who's only been drinking sparsely for six months. I could barely handle the above and I wasn't going further than that for tonight.
3.) Not sure yet, still exploring. I definitely don't like margarita or tequila though.
4.) Twenty, a brigade policy letter said those 18 and over could drink while in Europe. I had a few sips before then but those don't count because it was only a sip.
5.)An American soldier brutalizes a Syrian citizen, 2018 colorized.
6.) Everything is fine where it is tbh. More programs for alcoholics maybe, but that's about it.

Now have a drink and talk about your love/hate for drinking.

No drinking except on Sunday. On the seventh day, god rested with a brew and da game.

I personally think drunk driving laws are too harsh. Let me explain myself:

No one sets out in the morning thinking they're going to have a drink and kill someone. That's absolutely absurd. It also absurd to think that drinking and driving is on par with more serious crimes, such as rape, which also have comparable prison sentences. While the whole craze was that zero tolerance laws will decrease actual drinking and driving, that is not the case. Drunk driving isn't something that will be going away anytime soon, but we should be more in a rehabilitating mode, not punishment. Making one bad decision isn't cause to ruin a life.

Firstly if you're drinking in the morning you have other problems. Secondly, you're perfectly aware before you're drinking that every function will be impaired once you have drunk enough.
It also absurd to think that drinking and driving is on par with more serious crimes, such as rape, which also have comparable prison sentences.

Rape also comes with registration as a sex offender.

Which is why we make people convicted of drunk driving get help.

It pretty much is in many cases. DUI is one of them.

I did not literally mean in the morning, rather, when you wake up and plan your day out, do you intend to kill someone on accident? While I agree the decision to drink is something you control, there are other factors at play, especially as alcoholism is a disease.
Which is why we make people convicted of drunk driving get help.

Do you believe in zero-tolerence drunk driving policies?
It pretty much is in many cases. DUI is one of them.

And it shouldn't be, hence what I am arguing.

I have no love for alcohol, but it's not quite as viable to get rid of all hops because plenty of alcoholic beverages come from fermented grapes or other sources so, guess we're truly stuck with it. I'd be trying to make the tobacco plant extinct so as to get rid of tobacco products in one fell swoop. Nothing quite like going to the source if you want to prohibit something.

I do drink both beer and hard liquor now and then. For beer, my favorite so far is Anchor. Out of all the beers, it taste the least bitter. For hard liquor, preferably vodka with sprite or Red Bull; I'm not strong enough to drink purely hard liquor yet.

The biggest fuck-up from me while drunk was that I left my phone in a taxi. I drunk walked from the walkway to my house lift, until I realised the sheer horror: my phone.
It's amazing how quickly you sobered up once you were made aware that you messed up. I quickly flagged down another cab and using Find My iPhone, went 1/4 of Singapore to catch up with the taxi that my phone was in. All of this happened at 2 AM.

Alcohol is nice. Can be a social lubricant, can help you relax after a fifteen or so hour day, etc etc. Granted, it has it's downsides that I've seen first hand, but overall, everything in moderation.

Currently having a Grolsch beer, pretty decent.

Just don't drink and drive. It's 2018, we have lyft, uber, taxis, and even in small towns, there are people you can count on (DDs), bikes etc. It's fundamentally selfish to risk your life and others by getting behind the wheel while drunk. If you know it impairs your driving skills, why the hell do it?

If you get a DUI, it doesn't totally ruin you, but it should serve as a hefty wake up call.

I enjoy the occasional Smirnoff Mule. Tastes good, and isn't as alcoholic. Rhum coke for less-chill parties. Not a fan of hard beer. If I'm gonna spend the night drinking with friends, no way am I going to be wasting my time drinking beer that tastes like feet. I'm drinking mixes that taste good or I'm not drinking - the fruitier, the better!

But also I'm really weak when it comes to beer.

1.I will be drinking tonight. Going out with the fling :)
2 . No idea, I never quite remember.
3. Beer. Especially IPA, or sour beers.
4. Since I should not encourage under age drinking I'll go with what back then was the legal drinking age in NL: 16
5. Nah, not answering right now.
6. Same as with weed, explain dangers, but leave it open to people to use.

If your religious beliefs forbid it, then you're free to not drink without wanting to prohibit the rest of the world from drinking.

Oh please, stop treating drinking and driving as less abhorrent than it actually is. Driving a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol poses a serious risk to other road users and pedestrians. It is incredibly irresponsible. The fact that the person didn't set out to kill anyone is entirely irrelevant to the victim's families, all they see is a driver who killed their loved ones because the driver recklessly thought it was a good idea to drive after a drink. There is no excuse to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

It amuses me that a group of Christians are trying to get Trump's liquor licence for a hotel taken away, saying he is not a fit person to hold a liquor licence.

Also, alcohol is "against religion"?? What do you think that some Christians drink when they are drinking the blood of Christ?

I'm confused with that too, now that I think about it. I mean, "Jesus turns water into wine!" is heard commonly.

Unless... the blood of Christ and the wine are alcohol-free? Alcohol-free beer/wine, yuck.

Well if we're joking it's actual blood.
