Welcome to the Victorian Era.

The year is 1884, the same year in which the Europeans divided the continent of Africa among themselves during the Berlin Conference. The country where the conference was held was Germany, a new empire who had recently unified only a decade earlier. But the beginnings of a unified Germany began earlier than that. The collection of states under the Holy Roman Empire were subjugated by the French in 1806, where they would remain under French influence as the Confederation of the Rhine. The Confederation would collapse after Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Leipzig. But the Nationalistic feelings that the Germans had during the Napoleonic Wars would remain with them. In 1866, the Kingdom of Prussia and the Austrian Empire would fight in a war, where Prussia emerged as the victor, causing the Prussians to dominate the German states. In 1871, Prussia waged a war against the Second French Empire. Some say Otto von Bismarck deliberately provoked the French into attacking, and others claim he just took advantage of the situation as it unfolded. Nonetheless, Germany has now become one nation, and is rising as a great power in Europe, tipping the scale of power and creating tension among the Europeans.

The Italian Peninsula though, was a different story. The land was split, with the Italian Federation holding territory on the northern portion of Italy. Venice, which declined during the 16th and 17th centuries, didn't fall. Despite losing huge amounts of territory, Venice managed to keep their Dalmatian lands, and after acquiring Ragusa, they were able to expand. But the Napoleonic Wars caused the complete collapse of Venice and other Italian city states, which led to the Risorgimento. Venice was able to reform itself, eventually transforming into a republic, which led to revolutionaries making calls for the unification of all of Italy. Venice invaded Milan, and soon was at war with most Italian states in the north. The formation of the Italian Revolutionary Army and the return of Giuseppe Garibaldi from the New World with his Italian Legion allowed for victory in 1845. The states conquered by Venice were at first organized into sister republics, before being annexed and forming the Italian Federation. In late 1847, Giuseppe Garibaldi led a failed expedition to the south, coupled with threats from neighbouring states, prevented any invasion of the south.

In Asia, Japan has began to modernize and open up its borders after the isolationist period of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Edo Period (from 1603-1868) was the time in Japan were the Tokugawa Shogunate ruled over a time of economic growth, relative internal and political stability. The Shogunate wanted to guard against Western influence, particularly Christianity. The Tokugawa Shogunate decided to close off Japanese society from the rest of the world in order to accomplish this. Christianity was banned in favor of Confucianism. The Shogunate brutally repressed a rebellion on the Shimabara Peninsula in 1637, forcing all Christians to remain in hiding. The Shogunate closed off all trade with western nations and prevented Japanese merchants from traveling to other countries. But the Tokugawa would begin to weaken over the centuries. In 1867, the Choshu and Satsuma clans joined forces and toppled to the Tokugawa Shogunate, resulting in the Meiji Restoration, which restored power to the Emperor and removed the Shogun from power. Fourteen year old Prince Mutsuhito would become the next emperor after the death of the Emperor Kōmei.

In the Americas, the United States set itself apart from the rest of the continent as a regional superpower. The Americans, along with the French, defeated the British in the American War of Independence, installing George Washington as president. The nation would later acquire huge amounts of land over the decades in various wars and purchases. The first of these was the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which doubled the size of the nation. Later on, in 1848, the United States and Mexico fought a war, which resulted in the Mexican Cession and the establishment of the modern American borders. However, the acquisition of these territories would ultimately cause a huge divide within the United States. Since the nation’s founding, it had endured countless debates about the issue of slavery. Slavery had been a huge debate, and multiple compromises had been made, such as the Missouri Compromise, the Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas Nebraska Act. However, these laws weren’t enough to prevent the United States from undergoing a brutal civil war, which devastated the South. The nation had rebuilt itself since the days of Reconstruction and became an industrial powerhouse.

Now you will be able to take control of a nation and lead it. Will you be able to create an empire that is feared across the world? Or will your nation fall as a footnote in the history books? The choice is now yours.

NS Name: Asardia
Nation Name: The Empire of Japan
Capital City: Tokyo
Territory: Japanese Archipelago
Government type: Monarchy
Head of State: Emperor Meiji
Head of Government: Prime Minister Itō Hirobumi
Population: 37,962,000
Religion: For centuries, several religions peacefully coexisted in Japan. The Japanese were able to freely worship the Shinto gods and, later on in the 6th Century AD, they could also worship Buddhist divinities. Over time, Shintoism and Buddhism mixed, taking elements and practices from each other. Buddhist temples were constructed and the ideas of the new faith, which was imported from mainland Asia from Korea and China, were explored and allowed to expand. Confucianism was also introduced to the Japanese. Between the 7th and 8th centuries, the status of the emperor as an descendant of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu became the official doctrine, and the emperor was worshiped like a god. Starting in the 16th century, Christian Missionaries arrived in Japan and began to convert the populace from the Shinto and Buddhist religions. However, this was ruthlessly stamped out since Christianity was seen a threat. The Japanese continued to fuse Buddhist ideas with Shinto myths until the government decided to move towards a more purer Shinto religion. Buddhist temples went under control of the state, and the Japanese began to move away from Buddhism. In the centuries before the Meiji Restoration, there was a movement that had a focus on the Japanese people as being the descendants of the Gods and superior to other races. But at the start of the Meiji Restoration in 1868, the Shinto and Buddhist faiths, which had been closely intertwined for centuries, was seperated. Shintoism was completely reorganized and became the official state religion of Japan

Army: The Imperial Japanese Army had its roots in the Boshin War of 1868-69, which was a civil war between the Tokugawa shogunate and its supporters against those seeking to remove power from the Shogunate. The Imperial Japanese Army at first was just four military divisions: the Tōkaidō, Tōsandō, San'indō, and Hokurikudo. The Armies, despite fighting for the imperial cause, was more loyal to their own domains and clans. And even then, a true national army did not exist. The newly formed Meiji government was weak and the leaders relied on the armies of their own clans to achieve their goals. In 1871, the Imperial Guard, consisting of 6,000 men, was formed by the War Ministry and had nine infantry battalions, two artillery batteries and two cavalry squadrons. In 1873, conscription was introduced and required all male subjects to serve seven years in the armed forces. In 1875, there were 33,000 soldiers in the army. The Japanese used German and French armies as a model to base their own army off of, and eventually, the Japanese Army became one of the most well trained and well equipped army in Asia. The size in 1884 was about 80,000.

Navy: The Imperial Japanese Navy was created in 1869, two months after the conclusion of the Boshin War. The new Meiji government sought to create a navy with 200 ships organized into ten fleets, however this was abandoned after a year due to lack of resources. So the government decided to focus on coastal defense, with the navy being modeled after the United Kingdom's Royal Navy. The Japanese asked the British to create ships for them. The Fusō, Kongō and Hiei were built in British shipyards and imported to Japan. By 1880, the navy had a total warship tonnage of 15,000.

3 cruisers: the 4,700 ton Matsushima and Itsukushima, built in France, and the Hashidate, built at Yokosuka.
3 coastal warships of 4,278 tons.
2 small cruisers: the Chiyoda, a small cruiser of 2,439 tons built in Britain, and the Yaeyama, 1,800 tons, built at Yokosuka.
1 frigate, the 1,600 ton Takao, built at Yokosuka.
1 aviso: the 726 ton Chishima, built in France.
16 torpedo boats

History: In 1603, the Tokugawa Shogunate took power in Japan, beginning the Edo Period. Tokugawa Ieyasu became Shogun after consolidating his power following the Battle of Sekigahara, which ended decades of incessant warfare. The Edo Period would become arguably the most peaceful and stable period in Japanese history. This marked the beginning of 265 years of Tokugawa rule over Japan. The Tokugawa also created the Sakoku policy, which ushered in centuries of isolation and severely limited the relations and trade with other nations. This isolationist policy was enacted by Tokugawa Iemitsu between 1633–39. The Sakoku policy would remain in place until 1853, when American Black Ships forced Japan to end their self inflicted isolation and open up to the West. Under the Sakoku, most foreigners were barred from entering Japan and the citizens of the country were unable to leave. These policies were put into place to guard against the rising influence of western powers, specifically the religious and colonial influence of Spain and Portugal, which was perceived as a threat to the stability and independence of Japan. The Tokugawa went to great lengths to limit social unrest. There were harsh penalties in place for even minor crimes, and after the Catholic led Shimabara Rebellion in 1637-38, Christianity was outlawed. The rebellion and other incidents led to the Sakoku policy being put into place.

The Population of Japan doubled to thirty million over the first century of Tokugawa rule, and Japan continued to grow as the Shogunate constructed roads and standardized currency which led to commercial expansion. The Edo Period was also known for the increased literacy, which was among the highest in the world. The Haiku form of poetry began during the Edo period. Theater also developed during this time, such as the flamboyant kabuki drama and bunraku puppet theater.

However, during the 1800s, the Tokugawa Shogunate showed signs of weakness. The dramatic growth of agriculture that had characterized the early Edo period had ended, and multiple famines, including the devastating Tenpō famines, were handled poorly. The Tokugawa cut the pay of the Samurai, who were losing money already. The dissatisfied Samurai would later form a huge role in the downfall of the shogunate in the following decades. In 1853, the American Black Ship fleet, led by Commodore Matthew C. Perry, arrived in Japan. The Americans wanted to end the isolationist policy of Japan, and since the Shogunate had no defenses against the fleet, they were forced to sign several Unequal Treaties and finally opened up to the West after two centuries of seclusion. Many Japanese were angered by the Shogunate's failure to oppose the foreigners and several domains, specifically the Chōshū and Satsuma. In November of 1867, Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu stepped down. This lead to the aforementioned Chōshū and Satsuma domains forming an alliance, and convinced the young Emperor Meiji to end the Tokugawa Shogunate and return power to the Emperor. The two domains marched on Edo and ignited the short Boshin War and the Meiji Restoration, which allowed the Emperor to have full power.

History:
While the vast history of the German people could be traced back to the likes of the great Charlemagne, it can be said that it truly starts with the "Blood and Iron' speech by the statesman Otto von Bismarck as this sparked the raging bonfire of Prussian expansionism. The lightning fast defeat of Austria-Hungary in the 7-weeks War only had even more fuel to the ever growing German nation-state as its control over the 21 northern German states was solidified into the North German Confederation. A final challenge to German unification arose with the eternal rivalry with France as the Machiavellian scheming of Napoleon III and Bismarck led to a fierce confrontation of the two powers that ended in a humiliating defeat for the french nation. After the war, negotiations where put in place with the southern states being offered special concession if they agreed. On January 18, 1871, after over a millennia of division, the German people were united under a single flag and a single crown. There were the Austrian Germans left over but their assimilation could wait for the German nation now had to look beyond the seas for more land.

The 70's were used as a time for consolidation of the unified German states and to assess the infrastructure and industry of its 25 constituent states. Railways and streets were constructed to improve internal travel and structural uniformity of the borders between states. In 1880, preliminary colonial venture were made in Togoland and Kamerun as the coastlines were forcibly occupied as starting points for future inward expansion into Africa and this went over smoothly as trading ports were already established by German merchants in the 18060's. In 1881, a military expedition was sent to South West Africa to negotiate purchases from several native Ovambo and Kwanglai kingdoms. After some forceful persuasion the entire area's coastline fell into German hands and the climate made it into an attractive place for cattle ranchers to settle. As of 1884, there are plans for an expedition to the African Great Lakes region to be made. For now however, Germany bides its time as it waits for its destiny for hegemony of Europe and the creation of the next century as a German Century!

The rough premise being Bolivar became a reluctant Napoleon/popular dictator because government doesn't make itself. In this timeline, his wife does not die and has kids, of which House Bolivar is synonymous with a rather isolated GC. Aside from some minor border skirmishes in the Guineas (Surinam and Guyana), Central America, and claiming dominionship over everything north of the Amazon, the regime seems more focused on repairing and consolidating rather than expansionism, and would much rather purchase former colonies/places the Empires of Europe owns that they're not quite sure why.

Diplomatically, they're a mixed bag. On one hand, they're hated by the Americans for creating a Latin American bloc of nations, and for being an empire. However, they support the Monroe Doctrine. The Europeans will seethe at the fact that El Libertador broke the Spanish Empire and aided Napoleon during his early campaigns, but turned around and snagged some of France's overseas territories and supported the later coalitions against him. He would be considered a mix between Bismark and George Washington, a stern father figure who really wishes his government was slightly competent. Plus, he still continues trade and is negotiating a rather interesting infrastructure plan with Mexico. Something involving canals and railroads. They retain much of the old aristocracy to satisfy the conservatives, but still has enough civil rights that America doesn't Freedomize it.

Asia is ironically the warmest place where the young country is received. Japan has "Hispanic Studies" as well as its OTL Dutch studies, and many Asians view them as the only type of foreigners surprisingly uninterested in screwing them over. Independent Phillipines would be no doubt ecstatic to see a fellow free Spanish subject, Meiji and his reformers would compare notes on how to build things in mountainous, wooded and earthquake prone areas. Asian workers, turned away by policies in the USA and Canada would find a place in Colombia. So long as they're catholic, and willing to speak Spanish.

Overall, my hope is that Colombia can build tall and be the coffee table of the world, as a nexus of trade between Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Lol that would be interesting

I really like this idea and I'm looking forward to seeing it in the IC.

NS Name: <
Nation Name: Riau-Lingga Sultanate
Capital City: Penyengat Inderasakti

Government type: Monarchy
Head of State: Abdul Rahman II Muazzam Shah
Head of Government: Raja Muhammad Yusuf
Population: 1,200,000
Religion: Sunni Islam
Army: 16,000
Navy: 93
History: The Riau Archipelago became a part of the Malaccan Empire after the expansion by Tun Perak in the 15th century, following the decline of the Srivijaya Empire. After the fall of Malacca at the hands of the Portuguese, the axis of regional power was inherited by the Johor Sultanate. During the golden age of Johor, the kingdom stretched across half of the Malay Peninsular, eastern Sumatra, Singapore, Bangka, Jambi and the Riau Islands.

According to the 1849 Johor Annals, on 27 September 1673 the Laksamana (admiral) of Johor, Tun Abdul Jamil, was ordered by Abdul Jalil Shah III to found a settlement in Sungai Carang, Ulu Riau, on Bintan Island. The settlement in Sungai Carang was later known as Riau Lama. Initially a fortress to protect the Johor Empire, Riau Lama then prospered and became an increasingly prominent entrepôt for regional trade in the Strait of Malacca.

Ulu Riau became the capital of Johor during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim when he relocated the capital from Batu Sawar, Kota Tinggi in Peninsular Johor after the old capital was sacked by Jambi forces on 4 October 1722. Riau Lama then became the capital of the empire for 65 years, from 1722 to 1787.

The importance of Lingga began during the reign of Mahmud Shah III. In 1788, he relocated the capital from Riau Lama, Ulu Riau, Bintan to Daik, Lingga. The Sultan did this as he believed that he was being reduced to a mere figurehead under the Dutch. He then requested aid from his distant relative, Raja Ismail, a local ruler of Tempasuk to organise a successful campaign against the Dutch. Out of fear of retaliation by the Dutch, he organised a mass transfer of the populace: the Sultan left for Lingga with 2000 people, the Bendahara (vizier) went to Pahang with 1000 people while others headed to Terengganu. When the Dutch arrived in Riau, there were only a few Chinese planters left, who persuaded the Dutch not to chase the Orang-orang Melayu (Malay people).

The Sultan then developed Lingga and welcomed new settlers to the island. Dato Kaya Megat was appointed as the new Bendahara of Lingga. New dwellings were constructed, roads were built and buildings were improved. He found unprecedented new wealth when tin mines were organised in Singkep. Both the British and Dutch then restored his claim on the Riau island. He began to revive maritime trade discreetly with the British as a major source of commodities, especially valuable tin, gambier and spices. In 1812, the Johor-Riau Sultanate experienced a succession crisis. The death of the Mahmud Shah III in Lingga left no heir apparent. Royal custom required that the succeeding sultan must be present at his predecessor's deathbed. However at the time Mahmud Shah III died, the eldest prince, Tengku Hussein, was in Pahang to celebrate his marriage to the daughter of the Bendahara (governor). The other candidate was Tengku Hussein's half-brother, Tengku Abdul Rahman. To complicate matters, neither of the candidates was of full royal blood. The mother of Tengku Hussein, Cik Mariam, owed her origin to a Balinese slave lady and a Bugis commoner. Tengku Abdul Rahman had a similarly lowborn mother, Cik Halimah. The only unquestionably royal wife and consort of Mahmud Shah was Engku Puteri Hamidah, whose only child had died an hour after birth.

In the following chaos, Engku Puteri was expected to install Tengku Hussein as the next sultan, because he had been preferred by the late Mahmud Shah. Based on the royal adat (customary observance), the consent of Engku Puteri was crucial as she was the holder of the Cogan (Royal Regalia) of Johor-Riau, and the installation of a new sultan was only valid if it took place with the regalia. The regalia was fundamental to the installation of the sultan; it was a symbol of power, legitimacy and the sovereignty of the state.

Nonetheless, Yang Dipertuan Muda Jaafar (then-viceroy of the sultanate) supported the reluctant Tengku Abdul Rahman, adhering to the rules of royal protocol, as he had been present at the late Sultan's deathbed. Unwilling and furious, the outspoken Queen is then reported to have said, "Who elected Abdul Rahman as sovereign of Johor? Was it my brother Raja Jaafar or by what law of succession has it happened? It is owing to this act of injustice that the ancient empire of Johor is fast falling to decay".

Rivalry between the British and the Dutch now came into play. The British had earlier gained Malacca from the Dutch under the Treaty of The Hague in 1795 and saw an opportunity to increase their regional influence. They crowned Tengku Hussein in Singapore, and he took the title Hussein Shah of Johor. The British were actively involved in the Johor-Riau administration between 1812–1818, and their intervention further strengthened their dominance in the Strait of Malacca. The British recognised Johor-Riau as a sovereign state and offered to pay Engku Puteri 50,000 Ringgits (Spanish Coins) for the royal regalia, which she refused.
