What is TV in your nation like?

Postby Sirocca » Mon May 28, 2018 4:46 pm

What is TV like in your nation? Does your nation have a main public broadcaster? Who owns TV channels in country?

Siroccan Republic has the national broadcasting group SBTV (Siroccan Broadcast Television), whom acts more as an organization associated with 40 regional/local TV channels. HorizonTV is the de facto official and most important member affiliate in the organization. It produces hours of regional daily news programs, interview, entertainment, music, reality/game show and more kinds of programs. The teen-drama program Lost Horizon has been broadcast and produced at the HorizonTV flagship studios for 25 years. Being a main broadcaster of the SBTV, the company also produces movies shown in cinemas and on other Siroccan TV channels.

We don't have broadcast television, commercial entertainment and other non-University programing is delivered via of our state owned internet service, with the karass responsible for distribution of the program paying a stipend to the bursar's office. We also liberally pirate and rebroadcast the media content of other nations under the aegis of the College of Contemporary Cultural Anthropology.

Other countries seem to find our programing objectionable for some reason. Our educational programming is always being blocked or protested by various religious institutions or patent holders claiming "exclusive intellectual property", as if such a thing could exist for a modern scientific nation. Also, they make all sorts of incredible claims about our entertainment programming, like "filthy", "profane", "blasphemous", "excessively phallic", "violently sinful", inhumane", "degrading to human dignity", "an unceasing torrent of profanity", or "feral and preposterous".

TV in our nation is produced by 3 major companies, plus the government. The government owns a few channels, where it shows news, speeches by major officials, and emergency information. Despite being a Monarchy, government news is almost always fair and informative, and all opinions (even those of the King) are presented as only opinion, and never fact. The government tries to give opposition parties a voice.

In the private sector, Our Island is a big news channel, and also produces good informative/educational broadcasting, including educational kid shows. EntertainmentCPI is the big movie-TV series producer. They produce series shows (political dramas, cop shows, comedies, medical dramas, etc). And they show most of the island's sports. King's TV is the biggest private channel on the Island, with a little bit of everything. It has the most trusted non-government news channels, some major sports, and series shows. King's TV also has a large streaming service.

The government mostly doesn't censor TV. However, explicit shows have to come with a warning. Also, shows with potentially offensive content are limited to channels 200-299.

The Gerburtsurigan Government only allows State-approved media to be played on Television. In Gerburtsurg's "Protectorates", the media is less censored due to them having a large degree of autonomy. The only things they're not allowed to show is anything that depicts Gerburtsurg in a negative way or promotes the old governments that used to control the land. Other than that, they can watch what they please. In all of the "Protectorates", there are some underground broadcasting groups that attempt to broadcast media that the State doesn't want shown. This kind of rebellion is expected due to the aforementioned autonomy. However, with the recent completion and live-fire test of the Mercury Satellite, the autonomy of the "Protectorates" may soon disappear.

All TV shows and movie have to go through the government first and are accompanied by commentary from government officials. All movies must be rated at 5/10 there are no exceptions. Movies can not induce any kind of emotion in anyone unless it is also accompanied by the reverse emotion.

Six free-to-air television networks exist in British Guangzhou. All, except for the national public broadcaster, CNBS, are privately owned and funded.
Image
CNBS (Cantonese National Broadcasting Service) is the main public broadcaster in the country. Originally modelled after the BBC in the UK, it switched from being funded by a television licence to being funded partially by commercials and partially by a national "TV Tax" that applies to everyone, not just those who own television sets. This system of funding was modelled after public broadcasters like the CBC in Canada, or TVNZ in New Zealand. The network was known as CBS (no relation to the American Columbia Broadcasting System) from when it went on air in 1958 until 1988.

Image
CNTV (Canton National Television) is the largest and second oldest commercial television network in British Guangzhou. The network is mainly known for it's nightly newscast, CNTV News Centre, which is the most popular English-language newscast in the country (although CNBS電視新聞 (CNBS Television News) is the most popular Cantonese-language newscast).

Image
GBC (Guangzhou Broadcasting Corporation) was founded in 1978 as the third commercial network in the nation. The network is known for it's imported American programming, mostly from the NBC and Fox networks, the popular police procedural Police Report, which depicts actual crimes in a dramatised fashion and incorporates them into a dramatic storyline, and the current affairs programme A Current Affair.

Image
GABC (Guangzhou Associated Broadcasting Corporation) was founded in 1995, through the merger of Cantonese Granada (founded in 1980 and owned by the British media company, Granada plc, who also owned the ITV franchise for Manchester although Cantonese Granada, unlike the fellow ITV franchisee-owned network Associated-Rediffusion/Cantonese Thames, never aired a significant amount of ITV programming) and ITS (Independent Television Service, founded in 1990). Since the merger, the network has gained a reputation for controversial, and artistically-oriented programming.

Image
TVB (Television Broadcasts) Limited Guangzhou is the only wholly foreign-owned television network in the nation. Owned by the Hong Kong-based TVB network, the programming it airs is essentially the same as TVB in Hong Kong. The network is mainly known for it's Cantonese-language dramas.

Image
Carltonthames is the oldest commercial television network in the country. It was founded in 1964 as Cantonese Associated-Rediffusion Television, owned by the British Rediffusion company, who also owned the ITV franchise for London from the network's founding until 1968. The network was a sister to RTV (now ATV) in Hong Kong, which was also founded by Rediffusion. The network was sold to Thames Television, another ITV franchisee, in 1985 and it became known as Cantonese Thames Television. It was then sold to Carlton Communications in 1995 and subsequently was renamed to Carltonthames Television. After the merger of Carlton and Granada to form ITV plc, the network became a division of ITV. ITV spun off the company in 2009, although it retained 45% of the company's shares, making ITV the network's largest shareholder. Becuase of it's long history with ITV, it airs a significant amount of ITV programming, most notably the soap opera Coronation Street.

Radiatian TV is both famous and infamous, for its range of both very high quality, high budget programming and its low quality, depraved smut - including full frontal nudity and sex in prime time.

There is no state owned broadcaster on a federal level, but broadcast television is dominated by the "Big Four" networks - RPN, WTV, SBC and FBS. There's also Satellite (Cable) TV, of which there are an estimated 500 channels, as well as various free to air local and state channels - many states, such as Alayenia, have public broadcasters for example.

Commercial Network Television in the Radiatian Federation is dominated by the "Big Four":

  • RPN: (Radiatian People's Network), formally the state broadcaster until its full privatisation in 4040NC and consisting of five free to air channels:

RPN-1: Typically aimed at the 18+ market, and most commonly watched by those over 65, usual programming consists of documentaries, current events and some dramas

RPN-2: Typically aimed at the 14-49 audience, mostly comedy shows, dramas, gameshows and light entertainment

RPN-3: Focuses on the 16-65 audience, and is generally considered to be less "highbrow" and more "mainstream" than RPN-1

RPeeWees/RPN-4: Primarily a channel for children, although at night it plays a combination of music videos and infomercials

RPNN: A free-to-air 24 hour news channel. Parts of the channel are broadcast internationally as RPNN World.

RPNN is arguably the most objective and politically neutral of the Big Four, but its past as the propaganda wing of the Communist Party - despite its commercial ownership - still sets up it from (often blatantly inaccurate) accusations that it harbours left-wing sympathies.

  • WTV: (Western Television) Based in Das Engel, during the communist era WTV was the only independent television station and focussed exclusively on light entertainment. Unlike RPN and others, WTV broadcasts primarily in English and most WTV shows are thus popular outside of Radiatia.

Today WTV runs two free-to-air channels:

WTV: A mainstream mix of drama, entertainment and some news

WTV-2: Consists of light entertainment, more "experimental" or "arty" television shows and aimed at a younger audience. Most popular among university aged viewers.

WTV tends to take an openly liberal editorial line, usually endorsing the SDU and only endorsing the LCP twice.

  • FBS: (Federal Broadcasting Service): Probably the least dominant and newest of the Big Four, FBS runs two channels:

FBS: A mainstream television show most famous for its successful dramas and comedies

FBS Business: An Exegrad-based station that provides 24 hour coverage of business news and stories likely to affect the business community.

FBS's editorial line is very pro-business and could arguably be called 'right-libertarian'; the party has only ever endorsed the LCP in elections.

  • SBC: (Satellite Broadcasting Corporation): Most of its channels are on Digital (Cable) Television, however SBC has one free-to-air channel, which runs a combination of documentaries, news, lifestyle shows and some comedies, aimed mostly at the over 40 audience - the stereotypical elderly person in Radiatia is someone who watches SBC.

SBC has by far the most socially conservative editorial line of any Radiatian network, having endorsed in an election the SDU on just one occasion.

There are two state-owned media; namely
  • PNTV (Pauxian National Television)
  • PBN (Pauxian Broadcasting Network)
and there five are private television broadcasting companies; namely
  • RNA (Rockwell News Agency)
  • WC (Wagner Central)
  • TSM (The Socia Mail)
  • SVNC (Sarcena Valley News Channel)
  • LNN (Lincoln News Network)
The most popular watched channel is the PNTV (Pauxian National Television), it was installed on 1989. It is also the first television broadcast network in the nation. State-owned medias usually show daily propaganda, news, and extra information to be watched by the public. Private companies, however, have limited freedom. They have to follow strict rules from the Minister of Communications or their license would be revoked and to be shut down permanently if they disobey. They are usually regulated by the government. Whenever they come up with a new show or to report a news, they would have to be approved by the government to ensure there aren't any biased reporting.

There are four television networks here, one of which is public, and they all operate digital subchannels. Several smaller stations exist, mainly of the amateur/pirate variety. Some of the programming is of foreign origin, primarily from the US. Such programs are often out-of-production shows from multiple eras aired on the subchannels. Foreigners consider documentaries and similar content to be abnormally popular here. While slow television programming exists, it is relatively uncommon. Athletic competitions do receive year-round airtime, and this includes content from abroad.

Television is considered a utility in Zarahosh, and is thus controlled by the government. The only channels, however, are the two official government news and events channel, several international news channels, a Catholic Church channel, and a variety of sports channels both domestic and foreign. Tv service is provided free to every household (though the tv and other equipment must be purchased by the user) with the (free) basic package of the two government channels, BBC, CNN, Catholic channel, and domestic sports channel. All other allowed channels must be purchased on a monthly subscription basis.

The government also sponsors a number of showings of approved "tv shows" every week--mostly (though not exclusively) of US-broadcast and -Netflix shows, and of a variety of genres. These are shown in the National Theatre free of charge at regular times, so as to allow people to plan accordingly so they can attend new episodes. Some hit shows within the past year include "The Last Ship," "The Walking Dead," "Ripper Street," "The Last Kingdom," and "A Series of Unfortunate Events."

There are currently twelve nationwide OTA television channels broadcast in Gandoor, six are owned by the GBC and six are owned by private companies. In addition to the OTA channels, there are numerous channels available on cable or satellite.

GBC-owned Channels
GBN
GBN (originally short for Gandoor Broadcasting Network until 2006) is the original and primary television channel of the Gandoor Broadcasting Corporation. GBN first aired on 31 December 1949 and was the first television channel to be broadcast in Gandoor. As the primary channel of the GBC, GBN broadcasts programming aimed at all license-fee payers, including news, current affairs, sports, documentaries, and drama. Children's programming was also historically broadcast on GBN from 1950 until 1981 and from 1989 to 2010.

GBN Alt
GBN Alt is a television channel ran by the GBC that began airing in January 2004 as a replacement for GBN Classics, which aired from 1996 until 2004. GBN Alt is aimed at audiences aged between 20 and 40 years old and primarily broadcasts non-mainstream and experimental programming.

GNN
Officially the Gandoor News Network, GNN was the first 24-hour news network in Gandoor and began airing in March 1990. In addition to news programming, GNN also airs some current affairs programming and occasional documentaries.

Chiddies
Chiddies is a television channel aimed at children between the ages of 3 and 12 which began airing in April 2003. In 2010, all children's programming broadcast on GBN was moved to Chiddies, officially ending GBN's 60 year history of airing children's television.

GBN Nihongo
Created due to the passage of the Foreign Language GBC Act in 2019, GBN Nihongo is one of the two newest GBC-owned channels in Gandoor, along with GBN Russkiy, and began airing in April 2023. GBN Nihongo broadcasts programming exclusively in Japanese with English subtitles available for all programming.

GBN Russkiy
Created due to the passage of the Foreign Language GBC Act in 2019, GBN Russkiy is one of the two newest GBC-owned channels in Gandoor, along with GBN Nihongo, and began airing in April 2023. GBN Russkiy broadcasts programming exclusively in Russian with English subtitles available for all programming.

Private Channels
Osaka TV
Owned by the Osaka Television Company, Osaka TV is the oldest commercial television channel in Gandoor, having begun airing in June 1950 and is, alongside GBN and National Network, one of the three remaining original television channels in Gandoor established between 1949 and 1956.

National Network
National Network was originally launched as Rajio-Terebi (ラジオ・テレビ), the television arm of the Wonder Waves Radio Corporation in October 1950 and was the first non-English television channel in Gandoor, broadcasting programming exclusively in Japanese. In 1965, Rajio-Terebi introduced 'English Time', programming blocks throughout their broadcast day where they aired English language programming, predominantly English versions of their own series and some dubbed programming from Japan.

Wonder Waves Radio Corporation spun-off their television arm into a new company, RTV, in 1977 and, in 1979, Rajio-Terebi was renamed to RTV. That same year, the English Time programming block was ended and replaced with a simple message informing viewers of a series was in English or Japanese (by 1979, most Japanese programming was broadcast with subtitles). In 2003, RTV was renamed to National Network, officially due to wanting to retire the then-24 year old branding.

National Network airs a mixture of domestic and foreign programming, with most foreign programs being from Japan, although Korean series have been broadcast since 2013. All non-English programming includes the option to watch with English subtitles.

Ten
Owned by Alimore, Ten began airing in October 1971 and was the first new private channel to begin broadcasting since 1956. Ten's owners, Alimore, previously owned ATV, which broadcast from July 1950 to October 1957.

Ten News
Owned by Alimore, Ten News began airing in February 1998 as the second 24 hour news network in Gandoor.

TV Kira
Owned by KiraKira Corporation, TV Kira began airing in March 1976. TV Kira was originally planned to launch under the name of Network Six, as it would have been the sixth channel in air in Gandoor at the time (alongside GBN, GBN 2, Osaka TV, Rajio-Terebi, and Ten), but was renamed to TV Kira following the November 1975 announcement that GBN 2 would cease broadcasting in 1976.

StarNet
Owned by WoW Incorporated, StarNet is the most recent private OTA television channel to begin broadcasting in Gandoor, and began airing in November 1993.

Home televisions do not exist in Great Nortend. On the other hand, films other programmes are very popular, and a phenomenon closely linked to the Nortan way of life. Cinemas, of which a town may have one of, have regular programming including general film programmes, cinematic films and newsreels. Unlike some home television, episodes of a programme shewn in a cinema are typically repeated a number of times over a month, as only shewing them once would be highly impractical and wasteful. Thus, a series of a film programme typically lasts for either six months or a year, with six or twelve episodes each.

It is often considered a treat to be able to go to the cinema or 'pictures'. Ticket prices depend on the popularity of a particular programme, as well as its length and time. Some programmes, such as animated cartoons, are fairly cheap whilst others, such as cinematic feature films, are more expensive.

Programmes are produced mainly by the Royal Broadcasting Company and the Three Films Compagnie. They include:

Springtime/Summertime/Autumntime/Wintertime: This programme is a nature and outdoors programme focussing on the wildlife of Great Nortend throughout the year, usually tracking a group of wild animals over the year, the life of trees and plants, and also showing farm and rural life throughout the year. There are three episodes per season, each 1½hrs long.
A Guard's Life: This fly-on-the-wall documentary follows a railway service for a hour. It is popular for the interesting scenery and railway scenes it portrays accurately. It is broadcast fortnightly.
Peter Hedgehog: This stop motion programme features the eponymous Peter Hedgehog and his friends, John Rabbit, Lucy Squirrel and Stuart Sparrow.
Mary's Fox: This animated programme is about Mary and her adopted pet fox.
Constable Brown: A stop motion programme based on the humorous exploits of a village constable.
The Railway Series: Based on the books by the Rev'd W. V. Awdry, this Nortan live action adaption features life on the railways on the Island of Sodor.
Thumbham: A stop motion programme based on life in a village, focussing on one person throughout a day.
Change Here for Welton: A comedy based on the exploits of the employees at the fictional Alsby Junction railway station.
Letters and Numbers: Based on the popular French programme, Des chiffres et des lettres, this programme features two contestants trying to create words and get to numbers in 30 seconds. It is typically broadcast weekly.
Chernsode. This is a police procedural programme set in the fictional town of Chernsode based around Chernsode Police Station. It mostly deals with mundane day-to-day policing however also has story-lines and multi-episode plotlines. It is typically broadcast weekly.
The Vicar: This comedy is about a new Hambrian vicar in a strange village populated by eccentric people.
Sundry High Street: A soap opera focussing on traders on the fictional Sundry High Street, where the relationships between the Baker and the Milliner's wife are cause for scandal.
On the Map: A travel show featuring the host going to a town or region of the country and exploring it.

Our government has nothing to do with TV. The larger cities have broadcast TV, FatatatuTV being the major provider. In more remote areas, and as an alternative in the cities, satellite TV is very common. Foreign content is often pirated from other satellites while Fatatatutian content currently consists mainly of shows about ducks and fish,

It's a lot like US television. Depending on what service provider you have, you can get 1000s of channels from all over the world. However, there's also basic free TV, which has these channels:

Xmaranis Xandira Fírma or XXF- Xmaranese Broadcast Company. Local news is usually aired on this channel, followed by national news. Original programming also airs on this channel, usually targeted at individuals aged 15 and up.

DinjaTV- WorldTV. Airs international television programs.

Kind of normal. Our TV is exactly like every other nation. We have many TV networks and channels that other nations have. Our main News Channel in my nation is the Olympia News Network, or ONN. There's another one called Martian News Network or MNN. The difference between these channels is the locations. ONN broadcasts in the Capital city, Marcianus Capitis. MNN broadcasts in the largest city, Olympus. The distances between these two population centers causes the inability for the same channels to broadcast in the same places. So different channels are broadcasted.

Mostly pro-government propaganda in commercials. However, TV shows are mostly unregulated. The only TV shows that are explicitly banned are TV shows promoting anti-government sentiment or pro-communist messages.

TV in Worwin is a sort of fusion between the US and Europe. You have cable channels and broadcast TV networks. The primary state broadcaster is WNT (Worwin National Television), which is formatted in a similar pattern to the BBC channels: WNT1, WNT2, WNT3, WNT4 and WNT Government. All other channels are owned privately.

The Thermodolian Public Broadcasting Corporation is the only federally owned national Television corporation.

The TPBC broadcasts two channels; one is a general channel showing educational, news, and documentaries, the other just shows National Assembly meetings, government events, and hosts talk shows from all political persuasions.
The TPBC is currently in the works with the GBC to show three new channels.

All other channels and broadcasts are private and the biggest three TV providers are: Trén TV Network, Eagle TV, and Southern Network.
