It is the year 261 BC, and Alexander's dream of a united Hellenic world is fading, his vision now divided between his three grandsons: Alexander, Perdiccas and Amyntas. His empire stretches from Illyria to China, though divided as it now is some will say that to Alexander it was always an empire not of land and gold but of the mind. So long as Alexander's heroic spirit endures in his descendants, his empire will endure.

In the west the upstart state of Rome has challenged Carthage for control of the Mediterranean. Despite entering the war without a navy, Rome has achieved several impressive victories and looks to capitalise on its gains in Sicily. For Carthage the war is not over by any means, but they will have to be wary of the powers to the east, and their African subjects. Gallic and Iberian tribes grow increasingly cautious of the expanding power and influence of Rome and Carthage, and of the powerful Greek colonies on their shores. In Britain a great change is happening as Greeks and Jews arrive seeking sanctuary and opportunity.

In the east Alexander's empire continues to fracture as his grandsons, the Triandria, grow further apart. The time is soon coming for their official biennial meeting in Babylon and many worry that grievances could soon turn to outright hostility. For the vassal states and satrapies this instability provides the perfect opportunity for their ambitions to be realised, as it does for the many enemies of Alexander's realm. The Pannonian tribes still grieve their great losses at the hands of the Divine Alexander, while the Parthians plot to restore Persia to her former glory. Further to the east, the Tocharian Satrapy and Eastern Expedition have made contact with the land Alexander always dreamed of reaching, next to the Great Outer Sea.

In the ends of the world, the Central Kingdom is undergoing a great change. The Warring States period which has occupied the waning days of the Zhou Dynasty is coming to its bloody closure. The Qin, once a minor kingdom on the periphery, has executed a number of impressive albeit brutal reforms which has made it the dominant state. The other kingdoms have taken note of Qin's growing power and seek a number of ways to stop them. In the end, only one can claim the Mandate of Heaven and restore peace and harmony.

Population: ~20,000 citizens, ~<1,000,000 subjects
Capital City: Alexandria Antiochus

Government Info
Government Type: Military Satrapy
Brief Explanation of Government: A collection of colonies and tribute states and kingdoms under the jurisdiction of a Satrap. Officially the Satrap is appointed by and is loyal to the regime in Babylon, but in reality is beholden to Amyntas.
Leader/s: Antiochus Treros, Satrap and General of the Expedition, High Admiral of the Great Outer Sea
Relations Satrapy of the Macedonian Empire, allied to Amyntas

Leader Info
Name Antiochus Treros (the Mad)
Age: 43
Skills and Experience Antiochus is a trained and experienced general who prefers to command according to traditions set up by Philip and Alexander, though his decade-long expedition has seen him gain an appreciation of adaptiveness and utilisation of new strategies. He dislikes administration, something which was part of his downfall in power, and delegates that to ‘lesser men’. Though often seen as somewhat mad, able to rouse a great temper from his usual quiet nature very quickly, he has been charismatic enough not to alienate most of his native allies and to keep a loyal core of men around himself.

History: Born the eldest into a Macedonian family of minor wealth around the time of Alexander’s death in Macedonia proper, though he would spend some of his childhood being raised in Corinth. At the age of 15, after a dispute with his father, which involved a fight which left his brother crippled, Antiochus enrolled himself as a mercenary in Alexander IV’s army. He would spend most of his time serving in India, though he would only become distinguished during the first Expedition to the East. Taking credit for the cavalry charge which broke Yan Man’s left flank and won the Battle of Bassein, he would later take over the expedition when the commander Alcaeus died of ill health.

Upon his return to India he received high offices under an impressed Alexander IV, coming to eventually hold unofficial power over all the Indian satraps. At the administrative capital of Alexandria-on-the-Indus he was also entrusted with the care and training of Amyntas, the youngest of Alexander’s children. Upon the IV’s death, and Amyntas returning to Babylon, he resumed control over India until Amyntas’ return a year later. Antiochus would serve as Amyntas’ regent until he came of age, and would continue to hold power in his court until 271 BC, when elements of the court persuaded him to lead a second expedition. By removing himself from the capital of Pataliputra he essentially abdicated his position and left a vacuum of power to be filled.

His first half of the expedition (271-265 BC) was spent fighting in what is now South-East Asia, as Antiochus had mistakenly believed he had landed in the mythical Central Kingdom. Several years of conquering or allying with the various tribes, city-states and kingdoms of the area slowly led him to realise his mistake. Spending a year setting up a few cities, most named after Amyntas, he prepared to land in a new area found by his scouts which he assured was the correct place. Landing in what is now South China, Antiochus repeated his efforts in an increasingly alien area and was once again dismayed to learn that what he sought was further north. His supplies and armies exhausted, he has spent the past few years building a new city, Alexandria Antiochus, and solidifying his control over a disparate collection of tribes and kingdoms.

Population Info
State Religion The Cult of Alexander and the Olympian Faith
Religious Policy Religious policy is largely focused upon the positive, attempting to spread knowledge of Alexander and build or convert shrines and holy sites to him. Most religions in the newly conquered areas are not particularly well understood, and therefore are tolerated. Policy towards them is largely to see if they can be assimilated with Olympianism.
Religious Situation The Macedonian, Greek, and Indo-Greek population largely follow the Olympian Faith, and its various derivations, and most accept the Cult of Alexander. The native
State Ethnicity Macedonian-Greek
Other Ethnicities Indo-Greek, Indian, Austronesians, Baiyue, and Mon-Khmer, Tibeto-Burmese and Tai-Kadai groups.
Slavery: Chattel slavery is legal and practiced by the Hellenic population, with most slaves either being brought from the west (Indian, Persian etc.) or comprised of enslaved native peoples. The native peoples of the various areas either practice limited forms of slavery, or don’t.
Ethics: The Hellenic and Indian population are largely martial, most being the children of soldiers or soldiers themselves, and as a result of their being drawn from all over the empire their philosophical leanings and view of the world is highly diverse. Antiochus himself is an ardent Pyrrhonic, though few in his company share his beliefs. The native peoples tend to be sedentary and mixed between pacifistic and martial, with most following their own systems but some slowly adopting that of their new rulers.

Military Info - Army
Chief of Staff: Antiochus Treros
Commander Selection: Commanders are largely chosen via merit, the most senior having been personally selected by Antiochus to join him on the expedition. More recent arrivals tend to be descendants of great families looking to make their mark or fortune, or men loyal to Amyntas and sent to keep an eye on Antiochus.
Weaponry: The equipment largely depends upon the soldier. The Greeks tend to be organised under Philippine reforms, utilising Sarissas in a phalanx, while around 30% are Hypaspists, utilising gear such as an aspis shield, spolas or linothorax body-armor, Hoplite's helmet, greaves, dory spear and a xiphos sword. The Macedonian companions are heavy cavalry, while the Indian cavalry are lighter skirmishers. Indian infantry are less heavily armoured, and favour the sword or bow. The native auxiliaries are skirmishers and light infantry and are equipped appropriately.
Sophistication: As a military expedition foremost the troops tend to be well-trained, though the Greek-Macedonian core tends to dominate in professionalism with little training given to the native auxiliaries. Antiochus is a student of Philip and Alexander’s strategies and favours usage of his heavy cavalry to break his enemy while his infantry pin them down. His efforts are supported by reinforcement and money provided by Amyntas, as the infrastructure to support his force is current non-existent in his territories.
Levying: Most of Antiochus’ force are provided by Amyntas, the Greek mercenaries paid for by wages and plunder, and the Macedonian companions personally recruited by Antiochus before his departure. The Indians are levied and provided to Antiochus, serving several year terms before they are sent home and replaced, while the cavalry tend to be lesser nobility who have largely served since the initial expedition. The native auxiliaries are sent by allied and subjugated chieftains and kings, and are sometimes reinforced or allowed to return home.
(Is there a specific way they are levied, are they citizen soldiers, is most of your force mercenary? etc.)
Army Size 150 Macedonian companions, 2000 Greek soldiers (largely mercenaries), 17,000 Indian infantry, 3,000 Indian cavalry, 40 elephants, 5,000 native auxiliaries

Military Info - Navy
Chief of Staff: Admiral Hermolaos Isocratous
Commander Selection: As with the army, commanders are largely chosen via merit, the most senior having been personally selected by Antiochus, on advice of Hermolaos, to join him on the expedition. More recent arrivals tend to be descendants of great families looking to make their mark or fortune, or men loyal to Amyntas and sent to keep an eye on Antiochus. As Antiochus is not generally a naval man, and spends most of time occupied with other affairs, Hermolaos trains and commands them.
Weaponry: The quadrireme is the favoured ship and makes up most of the navy, while quinqueremes and triremes make up smaller more specialised components.
Sophistication: As a territory divided and connected by the ocean the expedition’s navy has a large amount of funding which enables it to be quite sophisticated. Though built for war, it has seen relatively little action other than fighting pirates and escorting ships and is therefore somewhat rusty. The sailors tend to be well-trained, and the oarsmen are largely made up of freemen, mostly Indian. Hermolaos is a gifted admiral, but tends to be very cautious and sticks to tried and tested strategies.
Levying: The navy is a mixture of mercenaries, free men, and slaves or impressed natives (largely oarsmen).
Naval Size Around 10,000 men, sitting at around 50 military ships (34 quadriremes, 11 triremes, 5 quinqueremes)

INFO

Major States

Rome

From a small settlement on the banks of the Tiber Rome has grown into a sophisticated and militaristic state. A destiny of conquest beckons, but a fearsome neighbour across the Mediterranean claims this mantle for itself. The People and Senate of Rome must overcome a great many empires if they are to rule uncontested.

Carthage

Scions of a seafaring race, the Carthaginians hold dominion over the Mediterranean and ensure all wealth flows back to Carthage. Such mastery is not without a cost, and an upstart Italian state now threatens all that Carthage has built. With the Romans advancing in Sicily, their fleet expanding exponentially, and allied tribes in Numidia growing increasingly defiant, now may be the time for drastic action.

Alexander’s Empire

In a single lifetime Alexander built the largest empire the world had ever seen, and upon his death after his final victory he bequeathed it in its entirety to his son. Alexander IV, upon nearing his own death divided the empire into three administrations, believing that it had become too unwieldy for a single man to rule. The Greeks now stand as masters of the known world, but are eager to finish the Divine Alexander’s dream of conquering the unknown.

Toû Alexandros

In Babylon sits Alexander V, eldest and self-proclaimed leader of the Triandria. His domain stretches from Syria to Bactria, and his ownership of Alexander’s Tomb and the Official Treasury gives him an edge over his siblings. Trapped between them, and pestered by nomads from the north, Alexander will have to live up to his name if he is to rule the world alone.

Toû Perdikkos

From Macedonia Perdiccas IV watches east and west closely. His domain stretches from Illyria to Anatolia. Through guile and cunning he took Egypt from his elder brother’s inheritance, and now eyes Syria and Judea. Yet events to the west prove worrying, and an angered Dacia rises to the north. Perdiccas will have to balance orient and occident if he is to emerge the lone victor.

Toû Amyntos

In his capital of Pataliputra Amyntas rules the vast and rich lands east of the Indus. Away from the politicking of the west, he has the unique opportunity to continue Alexander’s conquests. Yet he must be careful to balance his Macedonian heritage with the new Indian ways. Amyntas will have to establish his supremacy over the subcontinent if he is to look west and claim his birthright.

Areas

Pannonia

Protected by the Carpathian Mountains, Pannonia is home to many peoples and tribes. This area is not unknown to the Greeks, who under Alexander conquered much of it, but it has remained outsite the Hellenic world and the peoples here are fiercely independent.

Gaul

A vast region of sophisticated tribes, the Gallic peoples have long been known throughout the world as fierce warriors. Gaul as a whole tends to be politically divided, there being virtually no unity among the various clans, though under threat of foreign invasion they will resist together.

Iberia

The Iberian peninsula is home to peoples of many languages and faiths. The eastern region is particularly involved in commerce and trade in the Mediterranean, and growing Carthaginian influence in the region could present a problem, though the Punic War an opportunity.

Britannia

A mysterious isle of a renowned people, Britannia has become the latest and perhaps most unexpected addition to the Hellenic world. With the newcomers here to stay, and perhaps dominate, time alone will tell whether the native Britons will surrender their lands willingly, or drive them back into the sea.

Africa

Though dominated by Carthage, the peoples of Africa are reluctant to bind themselves to their Punic ‘ally’. Disparate but connected by a shared tongue and tradition, the Punic War represents an opportunity for freedom or concessions should they be willing to sacrifice their blood for it. Further to the east, the Egyptians serve under Greek rule, but their southerly neighbours have thrown off any form of subjugation and tribute.

India

The fabled realm beyond the Indus river, now home to a section of Alexander’s empire. The Indians, a diverse peoples making up one third of the world’s population, are now largely subject to Greek rule. For the remaining independent kingdoms the Greeks present themselves either great allies and traders, or foreign depots and plunderers.

Arabia

Though oft considered an inhospitable waste to some, Arabia harsh land straddling several rich and enviable trade routes. The Arab states have known Greek rule in the past, and its benefits and demerits, but their newfound independence means great opportunity, and imminent danger.

China

Home to the mythical ‘Central Kingdom’, China is home to a large and sophisticated populace currently undergoing a long, bloody and brutal war. The arrival of foreigners in the north and south complicates things, but the people of China are not so intimidated by barbarians. In the end only one state can emerge victorious and gain the Mandate of Heaven, lets the yellow river continue to turn red.

Greek Colonies

Across the world Greeks can now be found setting up new colonies and cities. Though sometimes welcomed, for they are foremost traders, artisans and mercenaries, often they come to be represented as imperialistic foreigners. Now stretching from Britannia to China, the future of these colonies is uncertain but their legacy is assured.

Nation Name: Toû Alexandros

Capital City: Babylon

Government Info
Government Type: Persianized Alexandrine Monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: The Shahanshah is the supreme authority in the state; however, the Shahanshah delegates his authority down to various satraps, who serve as military generals responsible for raising forces from that province and provincial governors responsible for collection of taxes and enforcement of laws. Although satraps can act autonomously, the Shahanshah retains the ability to veto any action by a satrapy that displeases him.

Leader
Name Shahanshah Alexander V
Age: 34
Skills and Experience: Alexander V is a very well-rounded character in terms of experience, having been raised by the best tutors during his time in Babylon, studying history, strategy and philosophy, while his fostering among the various Satrapies having provided him with a wide variety of experiences and lessons across all fields from economics to strategy to seamanship and oratory. Although not a master of any, oratory and history are both specialities of his

  • Perdiccas (brother)
  • Phyre of Armenia (wife)
Advisors: Attalus Peithonid, Phyre of Armenia, Niketas Laomedonid, Cleinias Perdicassid, Philoxenus Phartaphernid
History: Alexander V, born in 295 BC, is the eldest of the three sons of Alexander IV. Although being the most favoured by his father as the eldest child, he had little contact with his father as he was usually off on some campaign or another throughout his reign. Thus, he was raised by his mother, Thetima at first, but at the age of 11 Alexander V, under his father's instructions, was to instead spend half a year under each of the various Satraps in Persia as a fosterling to familiarize himself with the territory he would one day rule and to introduce him to the lower business of government.

Alexander V found the frequent movement between Satraps and their different capitals and families to be interesting, to say the least. One half of a year he would be learning finance and trade from the Peukestasids in Persepolis, the next fighting off Arab or Scythian raids with the Tlepolemosids or the Phartaphernids. Although he did not grow particularly close to any of the Satraps or their children, with the notable exception of Philoxenus Phartaphernid who would later become the commander of his Companion Cavalry, he remained in frequent contact with many of them via letters using the courier service within Persia, which Alexander IV had restored during his reign, and his education, although not particularly deep, resulted in him having a good knowledge across an extremely wide range of fields

The Phartaphernids resented Alexander IV for the loss of Parthia and the lack of assistance provided to them by him in retaining it, a situation similar to that of the Laomedonids of Western Arabia. When Alexander V returned to Babylon at the age of 17, it was with Philoxenus Phartaphernid as his closest friend and advisor. While in Babylon, his father provided some instructions in how to deal with the running of the empire as a whole, letting Alexander observe how he conducted the affairs of the empire and court. He married Phyre of Armenia later that same year.

Alexander IV died in 276 BC, when Alexander was 19. He sent word to his brothers to journey to Babylon for the funeral of their father and the reading of Alexander IV's will, held by their mother Thetima. Given that he was both the eldest and had been the closest to his father, he expected to be named as the next ruler of the empire without question. That Alexander IV's will placed the empire's rule as shared between the three of them was nothing less than a grave insult to him. After hours of debate, a bitter and resentful Alexander V finally relented and agreed to abide by the terms of the will, with the three brothers ruling from Babylon.

Babylon, however, was firmly Alexander's city; he had spent part of his time with the Perdicassids, he knew the upper classes, the language, who the people in power were, and more importantly he'd had the time to establish connections while his brothers had not, and all three of them knew it. Alexander V finally all but expelled Perdiccas after the Satrap of Egypt, contrary to the will, began to owe his loyalty to Perdiccas rather than Alexander, with Amyntas following of his own accord later that same night.

After solidifying his power in Babylon and over the other Satrapies assigned to him, Alexander, accompanied by Hyperuatas Philliposid and Philoxenus Phartaphernid and leaving Cleinias Perdicassid to serve as regent in his absence, departed Babylon in 270 BC to lead a campaign into Serica (China) through the Tocharian Satrapy, coming into contact with the Qin Dynasty. Aside from that brief campaign, and punitive expeditions against the Parthians and Arabians, Alexander V instead focused on improving Persia internally, expanding the Royal Road and the courier service within his territory, but ever mindful of the awkward placement of his domains between his brothers and the wrongs that Perdiccas had inflicted on him by taking Egypt. He also wrote a history of his father's reign and his grandfather's conquests during this time in the manner of Thucydides, often consulting various individuals present at court on the book.

Population Info
State Religion: Olympianism is the religion of the upper classes.
Religious Policy: All religions are tolerated and in turn are expected to tolerate other religions and the empire's control.
Religious Situation: Zoroastrianism remains the largest single religion in Alexander's domain, although the upper classes and Greek settlers both worship the Olympians. Judaism and other forms of paganism such as Canaanite, Babylonian or Assyrian also exist within Alexander's domain.
State Ethnicity: A loosely-defined but distinct Greco-Persian ethnicity, formed from the marrying of Greek generals and soldiers to Persian women during and after Alexander the Great's campaign, forms much of the ruling class of Alexander's domain.
Other Ethnicities: Persians are the largest single ethnic group within Alexander's empire, with Assyrians, Phoenicians, Israelites, Medians, Bactrians, Sogdians and other minor ethnicities on the periphery of the empire.
Slavery: Slavery is illegal within Alexander's part of the empire owing to the views of the Persians of the matter, but foreign slaves from other parts of the empire remain slaves while within Alexander's domain, as are those made slaves in foreign wars.
Ethics: Alexander's Domain is a hybrid of Greek and Persian virtues; although the Aristotelian school of thought dominates ethics, as does the martial character imbued by Alexander the Great, Persian influences do exist; lying is considered to be an extremely dishonourable and reproachable thing, even more than in Greece.

Military Info - Army
Chief of Staff: Attalus Peithonid (Commander in the West), Hyperuatas Philliposid (Commander in the East)
Commander Selection: Commanders are typically drawn from the various Satraps, with each Satrap normally commanding the contingent of the army raised from their territory and the Satrap with the largest contingent serving as the overall commander of that army, although the Shahanshah will assume command if present. The quality of the Satrap-Strategoi varies wildly, with some having no experience whatsoever in the command of large forces, while others, predominantly from the border areas, are veterans of punitive campaigns against Arabs, Parthians and Scythians. Satrap-Strategoi are also responsible for ensuring that the Persian troops levied by them are provided training, which is normally done while the army assembles.
Weaponry: The army of Alexander V is a hybrid of the Persian and Greek methods of warfare; much of his army is formed from Greeks or Persians armed in the Greek style, using sarissas in a phalanx formation, with the Greek troops being more heavily armoured than is traditional, using heavy scale armour and steel breastplates in addition to the hoplon shield. Other troops are armed in the traditional manner for their regions, including Persian light infantry employed as skirmishers armed with javelins, an axe and light wicker shields or spears, large wicker shields and iron breastplates. Dedicated archers are also employed.

The army also includes cavalry mounted on both camels and horses, in both armoured and unarmoured forms, although the weaponry remains the same; spear, bow and sword, and a small force armed in the style of Greek Companion Cavalry also exists and serves as Alexander V's personal bodyguards. The Immortals, formed from Greco-Persian aristocrats, are an elite cavalry force that wears heavy scale armour and carries a spear, sword, dagger, mace and a bow.
Sophistication: Although the hammer and anvil tactics pioneered by Alexander retain their form, the nature of the opponents faced by Alexander's armies have led to more of an emphasis on light cavalry than held by his father or grandfather. The Greek and Greco-Persian portions of the army are entirely professional, while the Persian troops lack the true professional quality of the Greeks and Greco-Persians due to returning to their lands in peacetime but are nonetheless trained enough to give a good accounting of themselves in battle.
Levying: The Greeks and Greco-Persians elements of the army are a standing professional force, while the Persian elements are entirely levied as needed by Satraps or the Shahanshah. Mercenaries are normally used to supplement the army in wartime, but tend to be drawn upon ad hoc rather than in any structured manner, often from the lands being campaigned in.
Army Size:

    Cavalry
  • 800 Greek Companion Cavalry (professionals)
  • 10,000 'Immortal' Greco-Persian Heavy Cavalry (professionals)
  • 2,000 Persian Camel Heavy Cavalry (professionals)
  • 1,000 Bactrian Heavy Cavalry (wartime only)
  • 4,000 Bactrian Light Cavalry (wartime only)
  • 13,000 Persian Light Cavalry (wartime only)
  • 7,000 Scythian Horse Archers (mercenaries)
  • 4,000 Parthian Light Cavalry (mercenaries)
  • 10,000 Arab Camel Light Cavalry (mercenaries)

    Total: 51,800

    Infantry
  • 25,000 Greek Hoplites (professionals)
  • 40,000 Persian Hoplites (professionals)
  • 100,000 Persian Light Infantry (wartime only)
  • 20,000 Persian Archers (wartime only)
  • 16,000 Syrian Archers (mercenaries)

    Total: 201,000

Military Info - Navy
Chief of Staff: Alcaeus Tlepolemosid and Niketas Laomedonid are the commanders of the Eastern and Western Fleets of the empire respectively.
Commander Selection: Unlike the army, Alexander's navy is more meritocratic in its approach, although the commanders of it tend to be drawn from the satrapies that are home to the largest amount of shipyards and have the most nautical traditions associated with them.
Weaponry: The Quadrireme is the most common warship in Alexander's navy, followed by the heavier Quinquereme and the lighter Trireme, although larger ships do exist, including a single Deceres, two Octeres and a handful of Hexaremes. A number of smaller ships exist for use on the Tigris and the Euphrates.
Sophistication: Most of the ships are old, and are normally kept in port to avoid the rotting of their timbers and other damage while at sea unnecessarily. However, the Phoenecians are among the best sailors and shipbuilders in the Mediterranean, and have been able to keep the ships in fighting condition through repairs and replacements.
Levying: The navy is primarily formed from Phoenecian or Cilician freemen in both fleets, with pirates being rarely hired on as mercenaries.
Naval Size
  • 1 Deceres
  • 2 Octeres
  • 4 Hexaremes
  • 27 Quinqueremes
  • 89 Quadriremes
  • 44 Trireme
  • 100 River-Going Biremes

Other Info
Goals: The empire is mine by right and all those who deny that are my foes. Firstly, though, Egypt, which by Alexander IV's will, is mine, must be reclaimed and Perdiccas given a punishment for taking it.
History: See history of Alexander V.
RP Sample: Pfffft.

Generic Info
Nation Name: The State of New Judah under the New Law of the New Prophet
Symbols: The Star of David and the Lion
Location: 105 (Not 104; Op admitted to a mistake)
Population: Within range of 35,000 - 40,000
Capital City: New Jerusalem

Government Info
Government Type: Theocratic State with elements of Democracy

Brief Explanation of Government: With the death of The New Prophet, the State of New Judah is governed by the New Law, which postulates that each twenty-fourth part of the people are to elect six 'Representatives' among themselves, who would then elect an 'Inner Council' formed by twelve of their number. These twelve would then elect a High Priest from among the descendants of Aaron among their ranks, and said High Priest would be the supreme ruler and head of the State of New Judah. Should the State of New Judah massively expand in population, voting and representation will be based on districts rather than population.

The powers of the High Priest are immense, limited only by the New Laws and New Commandments, which in turn can only be changed by the people, the Priesthood, and the Representatives voting in unison.

Leader/s: Isaiah IV, son of Isaiah III, High Priest of New Judah.

Relations The Silures are the main rivals and enemies of New Judah, while the other Britannian Tribes are not friendly to the Isaiahians. Nevertheless, the New Judeans/Isahians have won a reputation as 'magicians and sorcerers' (ironic given their hatred for 'witchcraft') as well as zealous warriors; this was after a period of adaptation to the climate and terrain of the North.

Population Info
Religious Situation: The Isaiahans are a new religion that sprang off from Judaism, birthed by a popular movement in the Jewish tribes against a corrupt and complacent Priestly Establishment that had collaborated with Foriegn Powers. Isaiahnism keeps several aspects of Jewish Law, including circumcision and a focus on personal cleanliness, as well as a ban on infanticide. They also ban idols, abhor cursing god, establish courts of justice, not commit murder outside of legitimate warfare and executions, not to commit adultery or sexual immorality (interpreted here as rape), not to steal, and not eat flesh torn from a living animal (in short, the Seven Laws of Noah).

However, they lay aside the dietary requirements of the Jewish People, including the ban on pork and shellfish, especially in Britain, where pork is necessary for survival in the cold climate and tough soil of the north. They are also less hostile to homosexuality (male and female) than their Jewish forebearers. As for deciptions of the human form, the Isahians make a difference between secular images, as in images made for references, and religious images, which are idols and must be destroyed when possible.

Slaves are also freed every seven years, acccording to the practice of Jubilee.

Culture(s): Israelite with Celtic Influences.

Military Info
Army:

Zealot Guard - The best-of-the-best among the armies of New Judah, the Zealot Guard are armed with tough bronze and iron scale armor, large wooden shields ringed with metal, and carry two javelins and a sword. Due to increasing Celtic influence, the metallurgy of the armor has improved and many Zealots wear chainmail instead of scale mail. Battle-axes are also becoming increasingly popular, again due to Celtic Influence.

Numbers: 2000.

Judean Archers - Originally from the hills of Judea, the Archers are skilled users of the Composite Bow, although in the damp of Britain, many are switching to Proto-Longbows...

Numbers: 800.

Sheperd Slingers - Sheperds and Slingers who have quickly interbred with their Celtic Counterparts, the adherence of these people to Isaiahnism is doubtful, but their valor is not. These people carry a sling, a knife, and a spear.

Numbers: 800.

The Host of New Judah - The greater part of New Judah's manpower, the Host of New Judah are fanatical troops that though lightly armed with only a shield, spear, and sword, are increasingly improving their armament as Celtic Influences creep in, along with a modicum of prosperity. And by that, they are increasingly adopting armor and better swords, and their skills are getting better and better.

Numbers: 6000

Scythed Chariots - Descendants of Old Judah's charioteers, the Scythed Chariots are recruited among the nobles who adhered to Isaiah II's words and New Law, and make up part of the nation's cavalry force. Just as powerful as their Briton Counterparts, the Chariots are increasingly using Celtic Models instead of the original Israelite ones.

Numbers: 50.

Medium Cavalry - Descended from Celtic Converts into Isaiahnism, the Medium Cavalry of Judah is a crucial arm of the military forces, filling in the role of Light Cavalry as Raiders, or Heavy Cavalry as Chargers.

Numbers: 150.

Navy: 25 Large Boats; Zealots can be converted into Marines as needed. 10 Smaller craft.

Other Info
Goals: Take over Britannia.

History: The Jews under Alexander's Empire were largely left alone, but that in itself laid the seeds of corruption as the Jewish Leadership, from the 'Orthodox' Sanhedrin and the Judean High Priest themselves cooperated with the new leadership to a scandalous extent, collecting taxes for their new overlords and extorting more than the usual rates so that they can keep much of the money for themselves. They also ceased the practice of Jubilee amongst themselves, in order to maximize profits from slave trading and slave owning, and allowed the enslavement of Jews by Gentiles. This couldn't have stood forever, and a popular movement under Isaiah II, the 'New Prophet', grew to revolutionary proportions.

The revolt was swift, and appeared to carry all in its way for the first two years, as Isaiah II preached fiery sermons proclaiming himself the Messiah, descendant fo David and Aaron and bringer of the New Law, and sought to besiege Jerusalem itself. But alas, the Sanhedrin and Judean High Priest called on their Hellenic 'Overlords', and the latter sent reinforcements to drive back the New Prophet and his 'Heresy'.

In response to this, the followers of Isaiah II took to the seas, negotiating a covert deal with the Phoenecians or Carthage to take his people to the seas, and from the seas, they eventually landed in Britannia, the Land of Tin, where they conquered land from the Silures Tribe, earning the ire of many Celts in the process. Nevertheless, the Word of God as interpreted by Isaiah won new hearts and new converts, and optimism grows as the armies of New Judah adapt to the circumstances.

Location: 75
Population: (population of everyone considered a citizen, and subject. Feel free to be vague since accurate figures don’t really exist)
Capital City: Arda

Government Info
Government Type: Despotic tribal monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: Ambarri is a mountainous nation with loads of villages and estates throughout its green valleys. These townships are owned by feudal lords, who serve the great king of Ambarri
Leaders: Deárg, son of Terîn of Arda, head of Clann Thriot, king of Ambarri and high lord of the mountains. (head of state), Rysbrunn, son of Taïgu, lord of Vâl Ooust (Chancellor of the realm), Várran "the dreaded", son of Yssum, lord of Baraich (Marshal of the realm), Tíraughannhum, Shaman of Vâl Créak (High priest/religious leader)
Relations No foreign pacts/relations.

Leader Info
Name Déarg, son of Terîn of Arda, head of Clann Thriot, king of Ambarri and high lord of the mountains
Age: 23 years of age
Skills and Experience Experienced mountain climber, highly athletic, above average intelligence,
Family Members
Advisers See: leaders.
History:

Population Info
State Religion Gallic animism
Religious Policy Unbelievers aren't welcome in Ambarri, and unbelievers who do roam the nation are often sacrificed. Converts are distrusted.
Religious Situation There are no dissidents in Ambarri, and those that do wonder around the Alpine mountain ranges are sacrifices or expelled. The native population is openly animist, considering that other religions are banned.
State Ethnicity The dominant ethnicity of Ambarri is, how William Z. Ripley put it, Alpine Caucasoid. The Ambarri people have Brachycephaly, they're more broad-headed than their Germanic counterparts. The Ambarri people are also very short: their average height is 1.63m. People who do not share these distinct features are highly frowned upon, and many are sacrificed as infidels in a matter to keep the Ambarri bloodlines as clean as possible
Other Ethnicities none
Slavery: There is no official slavery in Ambarri. People often take their own slaves if they find immigrants, infidels or people of other races. The state doesn't stop them from doing this, and allows the taking and selling of slaves. There are no laws against it.
Ethics: The Ambarri are a highly agressive and xenophobic people, who distance themselves from outside influences. They appear to be content with their current despotic tribal laws. They mostly spend their day working their fields and mines, and worship their gods at least once a day. The Ambarri people are highly religious, and believe that their patron gods will protect them from harm. Handicapped children are killed after childbirth, and the healthy Ambarri kids are indoctrinated with religious and chauvinist propaganda.

Hmm... Intriguing. I have a lot going on at the moment but, once I've got that over with and if I'm allowed, I might try to unite England several centuries too early. Need to reread Caesar's Commentaries.

Edit: I should not underestimate the power of my own ability to be distracted by research.

Generic Info
Nation Name: The Kingdom of Armenia | Orontid Armenia
Symbols: Flag
Location: 9
Population: Roughly 1.5 million people.
Capital City: Armavir

Government Info
Government Type: Semi-Independent Absolute Monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: The Orontid Dynasty, who find their origins in gubernatorial service in the Achaemenid Empire, are now self-proclaimed Kings of Armenia. However, their capability to govern and rule over Armenia is set only in place by the grace of the Alexandrian powers at be. Mithrenes, son of Orontes II, surrendered to Alexander the Great after the Battle of Granicus. This culminated at Mithrenes being declared Satrap following his father's death at Gaugamela. Eventually elevated to the status of Kingdom, the Kingdom of Armenia maintains almost complete control of its own domestic affairs and pays economic and military tribute to the empire, specifically that of Alexander V.
Leader/s: Mithrenes is the State.
Relations Satrap under the Macedonian Empire, trading agreements with the states of Alexander V and Perdiccas IV. Despite their status as both satraps, it could be said that Armenia has a rivalry with the Kingdom of Iberia to its north.

Leader Info
Name Mithrenes
Age: Roughly 83 years old.
Skills and Experience: Commander of the Citadel of Sardis, field experience during the Wars of Alexander the Great, and now King of Armenia. A keen administrator and decent commander of cavalry components, his age has now withered many of his more martial skills away.
Family Members
- Orontes (son)
- Ohana (daughter)
- Sames (grandson)
- Phyre (granddaughter)
- Saeeda (granddaughter)
- Arsames (great-grandson)
Advisers
- See above.
- Agapios, the Greek from Babylon
- Garegin, Captain of the Household Guard and Steward of the Palace
- Kevork, Magi of Zoroastrianism
History: Mithrenes was born as the son of Orontes II, Satrap of Armenia in the Achaemenid Empire. Brought up in an aristocratic household and family, Mithrenes was set to be taught the Persian/Armenia conduct of war and was eventually placed in command of the Citadel of Sardis. Mithrenes found himself taking Persian and Satrap forces north, to join Arsames the Satrap of Cilicia to halt Alexander the Great at the Granicus River. What followed was a decisive defeat on part of the Persian forces, and the almost complete eradication of the Greek Mercenary forces led by Memnon of Rhodes. So beset by the loss and the sheer, almost unstoppable nature of Alexander, Mithrenes surrendered before the Macedonian King. Alexander treated his prisoner, and eventual friend, favourably - a feat he had earned holding a Persian flank in the battle before being encircled. Mithrenes would fight for Alexander from Granicus to Gaugamela, wherein he even fought against his father for his new found liege. With his father falling in battle, Mithrenes was declared by Alexander to be 'Satrap of Armenia'.

As part of Alexander's consolidation of his new lands, forces were sent with Mithrenes to secure his new satrapy for the Macedonians. This succeeded against Achaemenid Loyalists. Siring children with his wife, Mithrenes was soon called to continue the wars of his Macedonian Liege. Mithrenes marched the Armenian army, heavy cavalry and heavy axe infantry, alongside the Macedonian Phalanxes that carved their way through Asia, and Mithrenes was present when Alexander was felled in the culmination of his greatest triumph.

Returning to Babylon with the funeral carriage, Mithrenes returned to Aramavir until his liege - Alexander IV required him to. Growing as close to a bond and respect as one can on irregular visits to the capital, Mithrenes began to favour Alexander V - the eldest son and heir to the empire. So when IV declared his empire to be split on his deathbed, Mithrenes was personally shocked. Confused. He understood, but he felt it went against the Persian notion of the Divine Rights of Kings, there could only be one Shahanshah.

Despite his lack of familial relation, Mithrenes felt the action to be a slight against the memory of Alexander. Fostering a marriage between his grand-daughter Phyre and Alexander V has not only, in his eyes, strengthened his own ties to the Alexandrine Family, but also part of his ambition to help solidify the young Shahanshah's position as the true Heir of Alexander. Now in his elder age, he does his best to rule Armenia in bountiful peace, giving Greeks beneficial rights, but ensuring that their migration is slow and controlled with as much backing from Babylon as he can receive.

Population Info
State Religion: Zoroastrianism
Religious Policy: Tolerance of Greek Paganism, to an extent. Tolerance of Armenian Paganism, to an extent.
Religious Situation: Majority Zoroastrianism, with a fledgling minority of Armenian Pagans and an increasing minority of Greek Pagans due to migration.
State Ethnicity: Armenian, which is attainable through the descendants of assimilated migrants.
Other Ethnicities: Greeks, Kartvelians.
Slavery: Slavery has kept its laws from the Achaemenid Dynasty. Slavery is not practiced on an industrial scale, and is often found in cases of prisoners of war. Most slaves are household servants, and the laws of Persia have remained -- violence is against the law, beating a female slave is illegal, if the slaves convert to Zoroastrianism they can often buy their freedom, etc. As a rule of thumb most, if not all slaves, are Kartvelians or, in some rare cases Armenians who have become indentured or rebellious. Greeks cannot be slaves, a caveat to the law instituted by Mithrenes.
Ethics: All ethnicities in Armenia have a claim to be sedentary and to some extent, martial. However, the true claim to martial-ity comes from the Greek inhabitants. At least this is the perception of them and again, this falls to the Greek notion of the phalanx. Armenians are boasters of their cavalry tradition, their own martial tradition. Most of the state seems to hold a view of Indian and Platonic Dualism. Greek Philosophy, such as Cynicism and Stoicism, has become popular amongst the intellectuals with the migration of Greek thinkers and well-to-doers.

Military Info - Army
Chief of Staff: Mithrenes (in theory), Orontes and Sparapet Zhirayr in practice.
Commander Selection: Commanders are selected from the stock of Armenian noblemen and noble-families, generally those who perform best in the service of the Azatavrear cavalry.
Weaponry: The beauty of Armenia's army is cemented in its cavalry. The cataphracts are heavily armoured in scale mail and helms, their horses too. They are equipped with long spears and lances, shortswords and maces. Her lighter cavalry boast javelins and shorter spears, sometimes axes, and some elements of the Armenian cavalry are much like the Persian and Parthian tradition of mounted archery. Armenians favour heavy axes and maces on foot, though increasing hellenisation and Greek presence has seen the influence of phalanx-esque units, clad in hoplite-esque gear with mighty sarissas. From the hinterlands, units in wicker shields and iron breast plates, or skirmishers wielding javelins and slings. Another pride of the Armenian army is its archers, who favour a compact composite bow of yew and bark and horn.
Sophistication: The Armenian battle-plans are often used in tandem with a heavier infantry-focused force of the Alexandrine Empires. Armenian tactics and strategy follows a Greek line in this regard, and they provide -- usually -- the cavalry compliment to the Greek infantry. On their own, however, Armenia prefers a mix of shock-and-awe, strong waves of cavalry charges supplementing infantry lines advancing forward. Peppering and irregular combat with horse archers and skirmishers are also highly favoured, to scatter and whittle down for the cavalry and the infantry.
Levying: Azatavrear - noble horse - and most of the heavy elements of the Armenian cavalry are considered professional, as are its elements of Greek and Armenian heavy infantry. These are recruited from noble ranks, Greek migrants and Armenian well-to-do citizens. Almost all of its irregular components are levied as required from the entire population. Mercenaries are not seen as necessary, as Armenia will usually march under a Greek banner.
Army Size:

    Cavalry:
  • 6,000 'Azatavrear'/Cataphract Heavy Cavalry. (Professionals.)
  • 2,000 Mounted Archers (Professionals)
  • 110 Scythed Chariots (Professionals)
  • 2,000 Cataphract Heavy Cavalry (Wartime Only)
  • 2,000 Armenian Light Cavalry (Wartime Only)
  • 8,000 Mounted Archers (Wartime Only)

    Infantry:
  • 4,000 Heavy Infantry (Professionals)
  • 1,500 Archers (Professionals)
  • 6,000 Light/Irregular Infantry/Skirmishers (Professionals)
  • 4,000 Heavy Infantry (Wartime Only)
  • 1,500 Archers (Wartime Only)
  • 6,000 Light/Irregular Infantry/Skirmishers (Wartime Only)

    Maximum Overdrive:
  • 14,000 Cataphracts
  • 16,000 Horse Archers
  • 8,000 Armenian Light Cavalry
  • 20,000 Heavy Infantry
  • 9,000 Archers
  • 24,000 Light/Irregular Infantry/Skirmishers

Military Info - Navy
Chief of Staff: Mithrenes, as there is no important navy to control much of.
Commander Selection: See army.
Weaponry: Nothing, essentially. Small-er craft for rivers, and Caspian sea usage.
Sophistication: Virtually non-existent.
Levying: Throw people from coastal settlements in the Caspian on boats.
Naval Size

Two Triremes.

Other Info
Goals: The goals of Armenia are divided between those of Mithrenes and his family that agree with his pro-Hellenic policies and those that do not. The 'loyalists' favour increasing their own dominance as a an Alexandrine vassal by acquiring Armenian territory from the Kingdom of Iberia -- and in rarely discussed matters, from Perdiccas. The others favour a more independent approach, that could be catapulted on in the event of an Alexandrine civil war.
History: Building on the history of Mithrenes, Armenia went from a vassal of the Achaemenid Dynasty, to one of Alexander and then eventually raised from a Satrap-Vassal to a semi-independent Kingdom within the Alexandrine Empire. A rough timeline can see the current Orontid Kingdom existing from the Battle of Gaugamela, through Alexander and Alexander IV's conquests of Central Asia, to the triumvirate partition.

Generic Info
Nation Name: Domain of Amyntas (Kuriotēs toû Amyntos)
Symbols: Shield of Amyntas
Location: 3
Population: 43,000,000
Capital City: Pataliputra (also known as Alexandria-on-the-Ganges)

Government Info
Government Type: Alexandrine Monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: Despotic monarchy with stratocratic aspects; military generals - diadochi - hold considerable influence, and control over territory, but ultimately the Emperor and Maharaja is a despot with absolute rule.
Leader/s: Amyntas V of Macedon; Maharaja of Hindustan and King of the Indus, Basileus of Macedon, Hegemon of the Hellenic League, Shahanshah of Persia, Pharaoh of Egypt, Lord of Asia
Relations: Antiochus’ expedition is considered a tributary to Amyntas; sending tribute in exchange for protection. The other domains, under Alexander and Perccidas, are nominal allies, but are in truth Amyntas’ biggest rivals. The remaining independent Indian states are considered targets for conquest, but many maintain lucrative trade relations with the Triandria.

Leader Info
Name: Amyntas Argead
Age: 28
Image
Skills and Experience: From a young age, Amyntas was raised to be a leader, on the war and home fronts. He was reared with the best and brightest of Macedon as his teachers, studying the military tactics of Phillip and the Alexanders, and the philosophical teachings of the great thinkers of old. He learnt too from Antiochus Treros "the Mad" before his expedition. As such, Amyntas is perhaps one of the best-educated men of our time, alongside his brothers. He is, however, young and impulsive; not yet having learnt the temperance of an elder man, despite the urging of the dharmic court. Nevertheless, he has ruled successfully since 276, and led a successful military campaign in the south. His supporters laud him as the spirit of the Divine Alexander reborn; his detractors chastise him as a Hindustani in Greek clothing.
Family Members:
  • Argead Dynasty
    • Alexander the Great (grandfather, deceased)
    • Roxana of Bactria (grandmother, deceased)
    • Alexander (father, deceased)
    • Thetima of Babylon (mother, deceased)
    • Alexander (brother)
    • Perdiccas (brother)
  • Porosid Dynasty
    • Poros the Great (grandfather-in-law, deceased)
    • Laodice (grandmother-in-law, deceased)
    • Danasura (father-in-law)
    • Nethrashna (mother-in-law)
    • Poros (brother-in-law)
    • Vedisa-Mahadevi Sakyakumari (fiancée)
Advisors: Antiochus the Mad (former), Antiochus Seleucid, Danasura Porosid, Vedisa-Mahadevi Sakyakumari, the Oracle of Delhi, Diodotus Diodotid, Periandros the Urchin, Bodhidharma the Blackened
History: Amyntas was born in 289 to Alexander IV and his wife Thetima in the city of Babylon, the youngest of three brothers. His early life as the son of the richest and most powerful man in the world was seemingly idyllic, however, his father had differing plans. His mother loved him as her youngest child, and though she protested, she was not able to prevent her husband from sending Amyntas to Hindustan at the age of 9. Alexander IV wanted Amyntas to learn not only from the Greeks, but from the Hindustanis as well. As such, he wished his eldest brother and family goodbye, and head east. With his care entrusted to Antiochus Treros, he became an enlightened individual, well-versed in the art of war. Antiochus soon became a father-figure to Amyntas.

When his father tragically died in 276, Amyntas journeyed back west, at the age of 13, leaving Antiochus alone to govern Hindustan. When he arrived in Babylon, he wished his father a final goodbye, hoping he attained rest and joy in Elysium. It was also here that the Last Will and Testament of Alexander was revealed to all. The three sons were to govern together. Amyntas urged his elder brother, Alexander, to honour the will, but to Amyntas' shock, the eldest brother had changed, and believed that he alone should rule. Perdiccas, too, seemed apprehensive to accept the will. It was largely Amyntas' action which kept unity among the three brothers, as he emphasised and argued passionately that the cubs of Macedon should not dismiss the wish of the elder wolf. After hours of debate, the brothers agreed to rule in unison, from Babylon. Even from this early stage, however, the three began to drift, as each brother focused on specific regions in the empire; Amyntas on India, Alexander on Asia and Perdiccas on Macedon.

A year after their father's death, tensions reached boiling point as Perdiccas infringed on Alexander's perceived interests in Aegyptus. The two elder brothers argued for hours on end, and at the end of the night, two of the three brothers had left Babylon. Amyntas felt betrayed by the brother he had once loved, and returned to the land in which he had been raised, ruling India with his beloved Antiochus serving as regent. In 271, Antiochus left Pataliputra at the behest of the Amyntan court, which urged him to head east, to realise Alexander's dream. Amyntas funded the expedition, and wished his surrogate father good tidings in the lands of the east. Amyntas then tightened his control over Hindustan, and initiated a military campaign against minor kingdoms to the south, showing his martial prowess, to the surprise of many. Along with the other brothers, he agreed to return to Babylon for biennial rulership councils, however the most recent of these has seen the brothers drift further apart than ever before.

Population Info
State Religion: Olympianism (de jure) with elements of Buddhist thought
Religious Policy: Amyntas has a controversial stance towards religion, owing to his domain’s distinctly religious diverse nature. He claims the patronage of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, and of his grandfather, Alexander the Divine. Further, however, he venerates the Buddha and has expressed belief in the Middle Way, extending it to his rulership. As such, though Olympianism can be considered state religion, Buddhist monks frequent the Palace and the Maharaja’s court is home to an array of mystics.
Religious Situation: The overwhelming majority of the population adheres to one of the dharmic religions; Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism by far being the most popular, in that order. Olympianism and the Cult of Alexander are prominent among the Greek upper class, though Buddhist thought has had an influence on these.
State Ethnicity: Greek is the most prestigious ethnicity in the state. Although trueborn Greeks are valued more highly than others, there have been cases of Indian-born nobles learning the Greek language and culture and becoming viewed as Greeks.
Other Ethnicities: Northern Indian cultures; influenced heavily by the Vedas. Magadhi Prakrit and Sanskrit are the major written languages, Hindi is a major spoken language.
Slavery: Slavery in Amyntas’ domain is similar to traditional Greek slavery, though is less widespread and has incorporated the Indian caste system. Most slaves are comparable to serfs, bonded to their agricultural land. The presence of the caste system has allowed for the essential enslavement of much of the Dalit class. A very small minority of the total population is in slavery.
Ethics: As the heirs of Alexander, the Greeks in India maintain a strong martial value, living a largely sedentary lifestyle. Stoicism and the Alexandrian school are popular schools of philosophical thought, and the legacy of Alexander pushes the Greeks towards a similar despotic monarchy. The native Indian peoples are diverse, but are largely sedentary. Most adhere to a dharmic philosophy, such as Buddhism, and tend towards caste-system absolute monarchies or merchant republics.

Military Info - Army
Chief of Staff: Danasura Porosid, Keyholder-Guardian of the Gates to Ares
Commander Selection: Amyntas considers himself a believer in meritocracy; as such, most commanders as promoted based on merit. That being said, the merit of ancestors too often hold sway. As such, many commanders are drawn from the satrap dynasties. Additionally, to curry favour with his Indian underlings, Amyntas oft considers the caste of a prospective officer prior to promotion. Notable commanders include Danasura Porosid, the current chief of staff and son of Poros the Great, Poros the Younger, son of the chief of staff and a rising star in the military, and Diodotus Diodotid, a famed cavalry commander.
Weaponry: The Greeks tend to be organised under Philippine reforms, utilising Sarissas in a phalanx, while around 30% are Hypaspists, utilising gear such as an aspis shield, spolas or linothorax body-armor, Hoplite's helmet, greaves, dory spear and a xiphos sword. Indian infantry are less heavily armoured, and favour the sword or bow.
Sophistication: Amyntas, as a student of Antiochus, favours the Phillipine and Alexandrine strategy, pinning down the enemy with his infantry and using his heavy cavalry to break the enemy. There is a high level of professionalism among the companion cavalry and the Greek professional troops, while the mercenaries are quite lacking and the Indian troops are not held to the same level of professionalism, with the exception of the war elephants, the riders of which are strictly disciplined and highly professional.
Levying: Though containing a large mercenary contingent, the army is largely levied. The Indian troops, in particular, are all of levied stock; the more professional among them tend to be of noble or merchant stock, higher in the caste system. The companion cavalry are chosen directly by Amyntas; the Greek section of which contains some of his supporters who left Babylon alongside him.
Army Size
  • Standing:
    • 2,250 war elephants
    • 7,500 cavalry
      • 750 Greek companion cavalry
      • 750 Indian companion cavalry
      • 1,000 Greek mercenary medium cavalry
      • 5,000 Indian light cavalry
    • 150,000 infantry
      • 5,000 Greek professional infantry
      • 10,000 Greek mercenary infantry
      • 135,000 Indian infantry
  • Wartime:
    • 3,000 war elephants
    • 12,000 cavalry
      • 750 Greek companion cavalry
      • 1,250 Indian companion cavalry
      • 2,000 Greek mercenary medium cavalry
      • 8,000 Indian light cavalry

    • 600,000 infantry
      • 10,000 Greek professional infantry
      • 50,000 Greek mercenary infantry
      • 540,000 Indian infantry

Military Info - Navy
Chief of Staff: Antiochus the Mad (officially), Antiochus Seleucid (in practice)
The Seleucid satrap dynasty tends to hold significant influence in the navy, thanks to their domains on the Ganges delta. Notable commanders include Antiochus Seleucid, the current chief of staff in practice, and Antiochus the Mad, the official chief of staff.
Weaponry: The quadrireme is the favoured ship and makes up most of the navy, while quinqueremes and triremes make up smaller more specialised components. Some Indian ship designs have been incorporated, largely for the navigation of the Ganges.
Sophistication: The navy of Amyntas is not favoured as the army is, but is surely better equipped and funded than that of his brothers'. Built largely for war, the fleet contains ships built both to traverse the Ganges and the open ocean. Much of the old navy is currently in the hands of Antiochus the Mad, and as such the navy is comprised largely of newer ships. The sailors tend to be well-trained, and the oarsmen are largely made up of freemen, mostly Indian. Antiochus Seleucid, heir of the now-deceased Seleucus Pogon, is an ambitious and competent, though impatient and inexperienced, admiral. Much like his King, his youth is both his strength and his weakness.
Levying: The navy is a largely comprised of freemen and slaves, with a small number of mercenaries among it's ranks.
Naval Size Around 30,000 men, sitting at around 150 military ships (68 quadriremes, 33 triremes, 15 quinqueremes).

Other Info
Goals:
  • Reclaim Alexandrine birthright
  • Finalise the conquest of India
  • Secure and maintain internal stability.

Something else: are we allowed to try to conquer areas not covered by the numbered map? Thinking of trying to bring all of the southern Scottish lowlands into the fold first.

Noted, and yes you are it is simply more difficult in certain areas due to a lack of infrastructure and as such a need to build it yourself. Since your people are used to the area, the lowlands would be far easier for you to conquer and integrate than say Alexander V trying to conquer and integrate Scythia.

Generic Info
Nation Name: Roman Republic, Res Publica Romana
Symbols: The She-Wolf, the Curule Chair, the Fasces, the motto SPQR, the Eternal Flame, the goddess Roma
Location: 13
Population: Including citizens male and female, and free citizens in allied Italian citizens 5.5-6.5 million in Italy, plus 1-1.5 million slaves. However these estimates are for Augustus’s reign, so probably slightly less for freemen and significantly less for slaves, I’d guess about 3.5 million freemen and women and only a few hundred thousand slaves
Capital City: Roma

Government Info
Government Type: Republic
Brief Explanation of Government: simplest way of explaining it Essentially the magistrates of the state, Consuls down, are elected by a popular assembly comprised of all Roman citizens. However the citizens vote in five blocks based on class, and the upper classes (patricians and equestrians etc) get more votes, and combined the top three blocks which comprise a minority of the electorate have a majority of the votes. These classes also provide the basis for the army. The senate de jure only has powers to advise the assembly of the plebs, however in reality it holds the real power.
Leader/s: Consuls Lucius Valerius Flaccus and Titus Otacilius Crassus
Relations Currently at war with Carthage over the island of Sicily, hostile with the gallic tribes to the north, and allied to Syracuse

Population Info
Religious Situation: Uuh very complex. Simply put it is roughly equivalent to the gods of Greece but also influenced by the Latins and Etruscans. The most important divinities are the Capitoline Triad of Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva. However there are also numerous cults present, such as the cult of Hercules, Castor, and Fortuna. Depends on knowledge and the correct practice of prayer, ritual, and sacrifice, not on faith or dogma, with auguries being vital to all aspects of government.
Culture(s): The dominant culture is Latin, however other large cultures include the Etruscans just to the north of Rome, the gallic influenced areas further north, Oscans and Samnites in the southern inland, and Greek colonies around the south coast such as Neapolis and Tarentum. The Samnites are the most troublesome people group, having resisted Roman expansion in a series of bloody wars and prone to revolt.
Slavery: With Rome’s recent expansion the slave population has risen and they fulfill a number of roles within Roman society from tutors for the children of the rich too working in mines. However the vast latifundia of Tiberius Gracchus’ day have not yet developed.

Military Info - Army
Chief of Staff: The two consuls are the joint supreme commanders, both of the army and navy, with proconsuls and predators also able to take up commands when needed. At the moment with two newly elected consuls still in Rome, the two consular armies in Sicily are presumably commanded by pro-consuls Lucius Postumius Megellus and Quintus Mamilius Vitulus
Commander Selection: The commanders of the armies are elected magistrates, so the same way as them
Weaponry: At this point in history the three main sections of the army: the Triarii; Principes; and Hastati, are all armed with Hasta spears, short swords, and oval shields. The Triarii as the oldest and richest troops are the best well armoured, with the other two classes less well armoured respectively. Roman cavalry is generally heavy cavalry and at this point is considered alright, and velites, poor skirmishers make up the last class of the army
Sophistication: Essentially the Roman army is a vast milita, however it is also extremely battle hardened both from the ongoing war in Sicily but also the long and grueling wars to subjugate Italy which only ended at the beginning of the 3rd century and the Pyrrhic wars. In it’s wars across Italy Rome has also built a respectable road system to support the rapid transportation of troops.
Levying: All male citizens with a wealth of over 400 drachmae can be levied for military service, having to provide their own equipment, giving Rome a vast number of troops to call on, especially when compared to mercenary dependent states.
Army Size A consular army is made up of four legions each of roughly 4,200 men, with two legions of Romans and two of Socii making a total of 16,800 combat troops per legion. At the moment there are two consular armies in Sicily, combined at roughly 33,600 troops. Based off the 2nd Punic War, a total of around 150,000 Roman citizens excluding the Socii could be levied. If the Socii contribute the same number of troops as they did in a consular army then it could be a theoretical pool of 300,000 eligible men. However the 150,000 figure represents 2/3s of eligible Romans and such a draft would not be used, that figure comes from the 2nd Punic War after all.

Military Info - Navy
Chief of Staff: The two consuls
Commander Selection: See above
Weaponry: The backbone of the navy is the versatile quinquereme, heavier than triremes but more maneuverable than the monstrosities created by eastern tyrant. Traditionally it’s main weapon is the ram, however the Romans have fitted their ships with the “corvus”, a boarding ramp that can be lowered on enemy ships allowing Roman marines to board.
Sophistication: In traditional terms Rome’s new navy is relatively unsophisticated, with little history of great seamanship, however the new corvus it is hoped will give Rome an edge
Levying: Until the outbreak of the war over Sicily, Rome was dependent on the ships of the Socii Navales, the seafaring Greek cities of southern Italy. However now Rome has built its own fleet from scratch.
Naval Size As of now, 120 ships of the new Roman fleet, plus some more ships of the Socii Navales, perhaps 40?

Other Info
Goals: Not quite Carthago Delenda Est yet, Rome now is aiming to secure mastery over the central mediterranean by gaining hegemony over Sicily and Sardinia, not to raze Carthage itself.
History:
753 BC: Rome founded
509 BC: The republic founded
508 BC: Start of the Roman-Etruscan Wars
494: First Secession of the Plebs
458 BC: Dictatorship of Cincinnatus
449 BC: Twelve Tables of Roman law established
439 BC: Second dictatorship of Cincinnatus
396 BC: Veii captured, start of Roman expansion
390 BC: Rome sacked by the Gauls
328-290 BC: The Samnite wars
287 BC: Second secession of the plebs

Generic Info
Nation Name: The Satrapy of Illyria
Symbols: Bronze/White Illyrian Helmet on Black Background
Location: 6
Population: 1 million
Capital City: Lissos

Government Info
Government Type: Despotic Satrapy
Brief Explanation of Government: Serves under and answers to Perdiccas IV. Satrapy is ruled by a satrap, who controls the affairs of the realm, though he may choose advisers to assist him.
Leader/s: Satrap Nicomedes
Relations Being a satrapy of the Alexandrine Empire, Illyria does not have de jure independence in matters of foreign affairs. However, the satrapy serves as the entry point for overland trade from Italia and Western Pannonia. Its natural rivals are Epirus and the Illyrian tribal states (de jure land claims).

Leader Info
Name: Nicomedes, Satrap of Illyria, Son of Phillip Poliorcetes
Age: 65
Skills and Experience: Early on in Nicomedes' life, his father Phillip sent him to the court of Alexander IV to learn the art of diplomacy and administration, a departure from the previously military-focused Antipatrid Dynasty's tutelage. Militarily, Nicomedes honed his aptitude for infantry command through an early campaign to expand Illyria along the coast. Although an able military commander like his father, Nicomedes will be remembered more for bringing prosperity to his realm through diplomacy. He built ports on newly conquered coastline that opened new trade possibilities with Rome and Carthage and built new roads to neighboring tribes that facilitated the influx of border trade.
Family Members:
  • Arimneste (43, wife)
  • Phillip (22, son)
  • Philopatra (15, daughter)
Advisers: Antigones of Apollonia (Strategos, jingoistic), Laches (Magister, timid in doctrine)
History: Nicomedes grew up in violence, not only from the mountains of the border regions of the Empire, but also from his father's own household. Cassander, Nicomedes' liege and then Satrap, was an able but merciless ruler. Minor figures would disappear frequently from his court, and usually found dead, floating in the Drim river. Worried about the approaching barbarian invasion, Phillip, Nicomedes' father and Prime Strategos of Illyria, sent Nicomedes to Athens to stay in the protection of the Macedonian oligarchy there. During this stay, he was surrounded by some of the sharpest minds and tongues in all of the world, and it is in Athens that Nicomedes studied the science of urban development and city commerce. In 323 BCE, Cassander's intrigues caught up to him and, for his ambition, he was executed and the ruling Antipatrid dynasty exiled to Britain. Phillip, who at that time had been sacked by Cassander but employed by the larger Imperial Army and served valiantly, received the backing of the central government to claim the Satrapy for himself. After a year of solidifying his power, Phillip summoned Nicomedes to serve as an aide-de-camp and pupil in Illyria's army. During this time, Nicomedes learned the tactics behind the Macedonian phalanx, and saw first hand its carnage against barbarian tribes. He fought with his father at the Battle of Poseidena, where he performed bravely and ably held the left flank of Phillip's forces. For some time, he served as an up-and-coming military commander in the Imperial Army, until he was recalled to Lissos upon his father's sudden death in 298 BCE. Establishing authority early in his reign, he led a successful re-invasion of some minor Histri tribes along the coast and launched incursions into neighboring barbarian states to disrupt their ability to raid his borderlands. At the age of 29, he married Arimneste, a noblewoman of ethnic Illyrian origin, in order to legitimize his and his future children's claim as rightful leader of Illyria. Nicomedes continued in his father's position of maintaining the northern borders of the Empire in Europe. His heir, Phillip, was similarly sent away to study (albeit at Pellas and not Athens) and was named a Strategos of Illyria's forces at age 20. His daughter, Philopatra, was similarly sent to the court of Perdiccas IV to learn about court functions. Nicomedes keeps a close eye on the development of both of his children, as Philopatra will hopefully cement an alliance with another satrapy or with the Triandria themselves, and Phillip will prove himself a man worthy of the role of satrap through loyalty and service.

Population Info
State Religion: Hellenistic Pantheon
Religious Policy: Hellenism is the official religion and is the only such creed that enjoys state recognition
Religious Situation: Most citizens worship the Greek pantheon, although recently conquered tribes may still worship similar yet culturally different pantheons, though these are being dismantled through shrine building and education.
State Ethnicity: Macedonian/Greek, as a result of early Greek colonization and the aristocracy being Greek. Because of proximity to homeland and similarity to local cultures, Greek as an ethnicity can assimilate others easily, and it may be difficult for a radically different culture to assimilate the Greeks in turn.
Other Ethnicities: Illyrian, Veneti
Slavery: Slavery is legal and is perpetuated through war. Most slaves in Illyria are barbarians from the Balkans and Pannonia. Many are Veneti and Illyrian, though slavery is not based on ethnicity; many Illyrian chieftains own Illyrian slaves.
Ethics: Traditionally inclined to be a people used to fighting and clashes, Illyrians, through expansion and peace, have become somewhat more established. The people of Illyria have always been sedentary, and the satrapy tries to model itself on Macedonian and Greek culture and government. Being educated in Athens and Pella, the Satrap and his family are learned in Socratic philosophy. Although Stoicism has not made its way to Illyria yet, the Stoic school in Athens has developed some very promising pupils that may make their way north.

Military Info - Army
Chief of Staff: Strategos Antigones of Apollonia, although the satrap does have a significant role in the army's organization
Commander Selection: Commander selection for satrapy forces is a mix between meritocracy and purchase of commission (excluding cavalry commanders). However, being a satrapy, some armies may be commanded by generals appointed but the central government.
Weaponry: The satrapy's forces still follow the style and tactics of Alexander's Macedonian Phalanx tactics. Accordingly, many phalangites wear the linothorax with some metallic scales for reinforcement alongside bronze greaves and braces. They carry the standard phalangite shield, the 20-ft sarissa spear, and the xiphos short sword. Peltasts, skirmishers, are usually very lightly armored, sometimes only wearing the linothorax. The thorakitai are medium soldiers equipped similarly to the Phalanx but who carry larger shields and shorter javelins instead of the sarissa. Though some younger commanders, including Phillip, the heir apparent, have argued in favor of using the more versatile Thorakitai, the higher generals stick to the only phalanx methods.

Cavalry in Illyria consists mostly of aphracts (unarmored cavalry). They are equipped with lancers and usually serve as scouts, screens, and protecting the flanks of the phalanx while harassing the same of the enemy. Any wealthy enough citizen can become a cavalry commander if they are willing to spend the money; there is little structure for meritocratic advances. A small force of noble cataphracts (armored cavalry), carrying javelins, shields, and the linothorax and similar armor for horses, is maintained and is usually the force that engages in offensive cavalry action.
Sophistication: Being on the border region and being both the victor and victim in conquest, Illyria maintains an experienced standing army. Tactics are old, but are considered safe, proven, and well-suited for defeating barbarian infantry. Illyria, being administered by a line of military commanders, has seen its army become intertwined with the satrapy's political life. The satrap has a close and influential friend in Strategos Antigones, and most of the ruling class participates in military functions in some way.
Levying: Apart from its professional soldiers, the satrapy raises levies through a stratified conscription system. Nobles and merchants are recruited from first but are typically given higher ranks, followed by artisans, then farmhands, then skilled workers. Mercenaries are usually recruited from Pannonia, Italia, or Greece proper, and usually fill out ranged soldiers and cataphracts.
Army Size
Standing:
  • 100 noble cataphracts (.6% of pop)
  • 500 aphract lancers
  • 4,000 phalangites
  • 1,000 thorakitai
  • 500 peltasts

Maximum levy (5% of pop):
  • 300 noble cataphracts
  • 4,700 aphract lancers
  • 30,000 phalangites
  • 5,000 thorakitai
  • 7,000 hoplites
  • 3,000 peltasts

Military Info - Navy
Chief of Staff: Strategos Neocles of Lissos
Commander Selection: Commander selection in the navy is down strictly through a combination of meritocracy and seniority.
Weaponry: The Illyrian Navy consists entirely of small but fast galleys known as liburnas. These are bireme ships with 25 oars on each side and a sail. Marines typically carry javelins, shields, and short swords, and are armored similarly to the thorakitai. Due to the small size but large numbers of liburnas, it is not uncommon for an older liburna to be set ablaze as a fire ship.
Sophistication: Illyrians are traditionally a seafaring people, renowned for their ability and infamous for piracy. This has led to sailors and commanders competent in small naval battles and in maneuverability, but not in large or amphibious operations. Sailors are often recruited (impressed) from piracy and smuggling dens, leading to questionable moral compasses and fortitude in large battles.
Levying: Most of the sailors of the Illyrian navy proper are professional sailors, enlisting for a period of ten years of service. Many of these men, though, are pirates that either escaped their roguish ways or were captured and impressed into service. The satrapy would, in times of full-scale naval conflict, commandeer merchant ships, which are usually also liburnas or small, single-deck galleys.
Naval Size
Standing:
  • 30 liburnas
  • 12 assorted single-deck galleys
  • 500 marines

Full commandeering:
  • 40 liburnas
  • 30 assorted single-deck galleys
  • 1,000 marines

Other Info
Goals: Place the rest of Epirus under satrapy control, recover parts of Illyria lost under Alexander IV
History: Disjointed and split into many tribes for much of its history, the modern Satrapy of Illyria began under the Macedonian conquests beginning with Phillip II and continuing through Alexander III. The conquered Illyrian tribes were incorporated into Greek colonies that had been established along the Balkan coast of the Adriatic. In return for his faithful service to Macedonia and to the Emperor, Alexander granted the general and administrator Antipater the newly-created Satrapy of Illyria. Antipater was a remarkable general and statesman and set about on assimilating the Illyrian tribal peoples and assisting in border clashes in Pannonia and Dacia. He established his capital at Lissos, a city well-defensible from the land and sea yet with sufficient access to trade. Antipater set about upgrading the city's docks and digging canals through the small sandbanks in order to open up more shipping routes. Antipater died during the reign of Alexander the Great and was given an illustrious funeral. He was succeeded by his son Cassander, who married Alexander's sister. Cassander was renowned for his military ability, but the man was not without his shortcomings and vices. Short-tempered and ambitious, Cassander did not hesitate to assassinate political or military opponents if given the option. Cassander can be credited, in part, for stopping the barbarian reconquest of the Balkans. Taking over from a line of unsuccessful commanders, Cassander regrouped the armies of Alexander IV and set about on a policy of attrition, cutting the barbarian armies' supply routes and wiping out smaller forces before they could amalgamate. However, Cassander plotted to kill another satrap, a crime that resulted in his execution and the removal of his dynasty from the homeland. Phillip of Epidamnos, Cassander's former second-in-command-turned-rival and the best siege engineer in the western Empire, assumed command of Illyria's armies while Alexander III held onto the satrapy while decided what to do with it. Phillip launched a successful if brief re-invasion of Histria. After an indecisive result at the Battle of the Danube and with both sides suffering great losses, Phillip withdrew from Histria and and set about constructing a defensive position around Poseidena, a port city in northwestern Illyria. With help from the navy to prevent the barbarians from navigating the various sandbars near the city, Phillip and his son Nicomedes were able to decisively fend off the barbarians and prevent a continued invasion into more of Illyria. Alexander IV made peace with the barbarian tribes without regaining the land he and his father had once held, a move that discredited him in the eyes of Nicomedes and much of the Illyrian nobility. Phillip was, for some time, an administrator of the military situation around all of the Empire's European borders, managing troop distribution and responding to border incidents. Eventually, in 300 BCE, Phillip was granted the Satrapy of Illyria, though he had been the de facto ruler ever since the invasions ceased. Phillip contracted camp fever and died in 291 BCE. He was given the epithet "Poliorcetes" or "the Beseiger" by his successor, the current Satrap Nicomedes, for his ability in siege engineering. Following the division of the Empire, Illyria began to enjoy greater autonomy and decision-making, in part owed to the service the Phillipid Dynasty has paid the Empire. Nicomedes seemed to follow in the great Antipater's vein, continuing the infrastructural development of the satrapy. Recently, however, the memory of the barbarian wars has begun to fade and the bellicose generals of Illyria clamor to regain lost land and wealth, a vision that Nicomedes does not agree with and hopes his son, Phillip, does not get sucked into as well.

Accepted, though Antipater and Cassander would have been absentee Satraps for their relatively short terms. Antipater was serving as Alexander's regent in Macedonia until his death in 319 BC, while Cassander was with Alexander in Babylon until his private execution in 323 BC.

Nation Name: The Wotaddani
Symbols: A spear impaling a boar’s head
Location: 110
Population: c. 250,000 (including women and children)
Capital City: Din Paldyr (‘the Fort of Spear-shafts’; known today as Traprain Law)

Government Info
Government Type: Oligarchical tribal confederacy
Brief Explanation of Government: The Wotaddani may possess a shared ethnic and cultural identity; politically, however, they are significantly more loosely connected. The lands of the Wotaddani are divided into dozens of smaller tribes, each of which encompasses several villages. The three largest and most powerful of these are centred around three great hill forts: Din Eidyn in the north, Corioritum in the south and, above them both, Din Paldyr in the northeast. It is to the last of these hill forts that the leaders or representatives of each of the Wotaddani’s tribes, along with anyone who wishes to go, journey each year, halfway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox, for the week-long festival of Lugnasad that also functions as a conclave for discussion of Wotaddani affairs; the festival, the most important of the Wotaddani’s festivals, is thus also known as the ‘High Peacemeet’. Presiding over all of them is the High Chieftain, who has sole power to dictate rules and commands that apply to all of the Wotaddani; technically he also has the power to call a High Peacemeet at any time, though there hasn’t been one of these extraordinary meetings in living memory. These may be vetoed by either the combined votes of the two secondary great tribes’ chieftains, the Great Chieftains (or their representatives, though for a Great Chieftain not to be present at Lugnasad would be a grave insult, secular and religious), the votes of two thirds of the chieftains of every other tribe (or their representatives), the Low Chieftains, or druidic counsel. Otherwise, the tribes remain fairly autonomous, each answering to their own chieftain’s commands and laws, though individuals or tribes in dispute who cannot wait for Lugnasad may turn to Din Paldyr, or Din Eidyn or Corioritum, for arbitration.
Leader/s: High Chieftain Ruid son of Elgued, First Spear Cunueon son of Ruid
Relations: The Wotaddani rarely present a unified diplomatic front (though they do have the structures to do so, as seen above, and have in the past at times); each tribe and each individual mostly goes about their business relatively free of interference from Din Paldyr. That said, they certainly have opinions on those around them. To the north and northwest are the Dumnonani, possibly the second-most powerful confederation in in the Wotaddani’s vicinity and known for their hardiness and warlike nature like that of their northern neighbours, who have long coveted Wotaddani land and resources. To the immediate west, meanwhile, lie the Helgowani, who would be an ideal target to bring into the Wotaddani fold were they not under the protection of the Brigantes, the mighty union of tribes to the south, that they might act as a buffer zone and prevent the Wotaddani from becoming strong enough to be a nuisance. Further west than the Helgowani on the far coast exist the somewhat passive Novantani, who, rather than upset any of these coalitions, seem to have basically settled on a policy of staying out of everyone’s business and keeping themselves to themselves. The newest arrivals are, of course, the Greeks of the Koumbrian colony; what limited contact there has been has been positive and already some of the southernmost tribes of the Wotaddani coalition have begun regular trade.

Leader Info
Name: High Chieftain Ruid son of Elgued
Age: 47
Skills and Experience: Ruid has been the High Chieftain of the Wotaddani for a long time now, longer than most, and is thus a competent administrator - as far as one can be an administrator without writing - and resolver of disputes. He is also adaptable and swift to learn, something that he has passed down to his son Cunueon, and good-humoured, which has manifested in his daughter Enynny. What he is not is a warrior. He never took to the famous spear of his ancestors - but he was self-aware enough to recognise that and make sure that Cunueon spent a lot of time with Din Paldyr’s most skilled warriors as he was growing up.
Family Members: Milgen son of Conoc (step-uncle-in-law and Great Chieftain of Corioritum; age 47)
Aerthirn son of Enim (stepbrother-in-law and Great Chieftain of Din Eidyn; age 42)
Ystradwel daughter of Enim (wife; deceased; formerly age 24)
Languoreth daughter of Ris (wife; age 33)
Enynny daughter of Ruid (daughter; age 23)
Angharad daughter of Milgen (step-cousin-in-law; age 23)
Cunueon son of Ruid (son; age 21)
Conhail son of Milgen (step-cousin-in-law; age 20)
Dofran son of Aerthirn (step-nephew-in-law; age 17)
Elgued son of Ruid (son; age 14)
Advisers: Hirel son of Guedgen (druid; age 27)
Theramenes son of Hermias (Greek geographer; age 38)
History: Ruid was born to a father who was not a particularly good High Chieftain. Elgued was known for taking sides in the disputes between the minor tribes and for arguing with rather than taking advice from the Great Chieftains. The result was that when Ruid came to power after his father’s death twenty years ago it seemed that the coalition was on the brink of collapse; both Din Eidyr or Corioritum were practically one more dispute from breaking away and taking dozens of villages with them. It was Ruid’s swift response that halted this; not only did he consolidate the relationship with the two other centres of Wotaddani power through marriage to Ystradwel of Corioritum and (though the actual marriage wouldn’t happen until a few years later due to her young age) Languoreth of Din Eidyr, he guaranteed new political rights for all of the subordinate chieftains to avoid the semi-autocratic rule of his father. The result of these reforms, along with a notable uptick on the emphasis put by the High Chieftain on gatherings of the Wotaddani, was a renewal of the confederation’s spirit of unity and - though those who thought that Ruid would be a weak High Chieftain because he considered those other than himself were quickly proven wrong - the tribes’ opinion of Ruid was notable for its height. It is a pity, then, that Ystradwel died giving birth to their first son, Cunueon. Ruid had genuinely loved her, having grown up with her and seen her often at the Wotaddani’s festivals, and her death left him bereft of her energy that had often been the motive force behind his determination. He remained a more than competent leader, and the stoic Languoreth’s support was invaluable in that, but he took no other wives and he never again recaptured the spirit of positive change that he once embodied. Nonetheless, he is still widely respected among his compatriots and his work has truly reunited the Wotaddani, possibly more closely than ever. How his son continues that work remains to be seen.

Population Info
State Religion: Brythonic animism/polytheism (note that, due to the localised nature of Brythonic religion and Celtic religion generally, I’ll be using some creative license when I describe Wotaddani religious practice)
Religious Policy: Worship of non-Brythonic gods by other peoples is understood as normal and worship of those same gods by the Wotaddani would be accepted, if a little strange; religious sites are, however, considered sacred and vandalism of them or other insults to the gods or spirits criminal. Monotheism is known of only through Greek contact and most who do hear about it find the concept bizarre.
Religious Situation: Religious knowledge is typically the preserve of druids (of their various kinds) who form a religious elite that transcends the boundaries between the Wotaddani and the other Celtic tribes of the British Isles. The gods’ names and their basic functions in the world are relatively common knowledge but this is little in comparison to the full religious training that druids will undergo at holy sites such as modern day Anglesey and Orkney.
State Ethnicity: Brythonic Celtic, an identity which is tied to ancestry and connection to the land.
Other Ethnicities: The occasional non-Brythonic Celt or Greek may be found amongst the Wotaddani.
Slavery: Not uncommon, particularly among high-ranking Wotaddani. Like most Celts, the Wotaddani take slaves primarily to settle inter-tribal disputes and less commonly as war prizes. Female slaves tend to be most prized, followed by children. Unlike such powers as Rome, however, the Wotaddani are not a slave society; they are not dependant on slaves to function.
Ethics: Violence and raiding are a fundamental and accepted part of Wotaddani life and Celtic culture in general as much as herding and worship are; unlike their continental counterparts, however, migrations among the British Celtic population are uncommon, resulting in the staking of territory and the formation of permanent inter-tribal alliances and confederacies such as the Wotaddani. The beginnings of cultural influence from Greek settlers to the south have not quite yet made themselves known; whether the powerful influence of Greek philosophy will make itself known among the Wotaddani remains to be seen.

Military Info - Army
Chief of Staff: First Spear Cunueon son of Ruid
Commander Selection: Military command is either taken by the chieftains of tribes or leaders that they send in their place according to the custom of each tribe. The exception to this rule is the warbands, who more often than not are led by the eldest in the band or have no proper leadership at all. When a united Wotaddani army is called together the leader titled ‘First Spear’, either the High Chieftain himself or, if he is too old for service, his son or, failing that, another male relative, takes command.
Weaponry and Armour: Like the majority of Celtic peoples, the Wotaddani are skilled metalworkers and particularly practiced in the use of iron and bronze; they even have some significant iron deposits within their sphere of influence. Needless to say, most Wotaddani go to battle equipped with iron weapons of good quality for the time, even if those weapons are only axes more often used for cutting down trees or spears and javelins with shafts borrowed from hoes. Shields, typically of an oblong, ovular or hexagonal shape and constructed with a leather cover and wooden or metal spine, are also common. Higher ranking members of Wotaddani society are more likely to carry swords, typically straight, just under a metre in length and used as both stabbing and cutting weapons, and wear armour (though some warriors of lesser status may also possess them); here the influence of Greek colonists has made itself known, as some have adopted the Macedonian pattern of linothorax, helmet and greaves, though most still use ever-dependable mail.
Sophistication: Celtic warfare is, by and large, relatively unsophisticated and the Wotaddani are no exception. Before battle, manoeuvres such as ambushes excepted, the two sides will tend to line up and create as much noise as possible, blowing elaborately carved horns, shouting and banging their weapons against their shields. At that point, disputes may be decided by a duel to the death between one to three champions of each side; should things proceed to actual combat, most of the fighting on foot consists of two lines charging on foot and fighting until one breaks, though some will fight as javelinmen and slingers and, less commonly, archers. Regarding mounted troops, though some experiments in Greek-based cavalry forces using horses from the stock of the settlers to the south have taken place, the majority of fast-moving Wotaddani soldiers (and undoubtedly the most complex element in their military paradigms) are chariot-mounted, typically engaging before a battle as a skirmishing force and subsequently dropping off soldiers as a mobile reserve. With no method yet developed of giving commands mid-battle, tactical coordination consists of pre-planning at best and is non-existent at worst.
Levying: The closest that the Wotaddani have to professional forces are their warbands, groups of young men from the same tribe who compete amongst themselves, go on raids and learn to fight together before they marry and settle down; indeed, one of their main social functions is to work to build the houses of and ‘obtain’ livestock for those leaving the warband. While still subject to their tribes’ chieftains - when to stop raiding an ally, for instance, they will more often than not stop - and to the decree of the High Chieftain and/or the First Spear, they are otherwise essentially independent. Each has its own traditions; a few, for instance, have adopted the war paint of their northern neighbours. Should the First Spear need troops, the warbands are the first to be called upon to a High Warmeet at Din Paldyr; if they are not judged to be enough, then any number from each tribe up to essentially everyone may be called upon. Notably, if the High Chieftain and First Spear are two different people, only the High Chieftain can call a High Warmeet. Unlike common warmeets under a lesser chieftain’s banner, a High Warmeet is always accompanied by a great hunt which ceremonially re-enacts the founding hunt of Din Paldyr and a subsequent feast at which a warrior is entitled only to the meat that he has killed himself - except for the warrior with the greatest haul, who may have a morsel from everyone else’s as well.
Army Size: Potentially all adult men (numbering around 100,000 people) among the Wotaddani, and the odd woman as well, may be called into service to participate in raids and, on occasion, larger scale intertribal conflict. There are no Wotaddani standing forces with the possible exception of the warbands, however, and the lack of any proper military infrastructure would make bringing them all together at one place difficult and sustaining them while in this state for long periods almost impossible. In the vast majority of cases, men will be called upon to join an attack on a particular tribe or tribal confederacy, meet up, walk towards the objective, fight or raid and then go home again.

Military Info - Navy
Chief of Staff: No
Commander Selection: None
Weaponry: See ‘Army’ equivalent section.
Sophistication: Celts are not poor shipbuilders and the Wotaddani, given their place on the coast, are better at it than most; their craft are well-adapted to the rough northern seas, watertight and swift. What they aren’t would be very large or built for warfare. What naval combat the Wotaddani practice is pretty much confined to amphibious raiding; they have no naval doctrine, knowledge of naval tactics or anything similar beyond what they have heard from the Greeks to the south.
Levying: N/A
Naval Size: Theoretically, whatever boats and ships happen to be present at the time.

Other Info
Goals: Unite the lands to the south and west against the threat of foreign subjugation.
Mythology/History: Most Wotaddani agree that their people were founded centuries ago by a wanderer by the name of Cynwrig from the lands to the south. Cynwrig first set off on his journey after Lugus, god of the sky, high places, craftsmanship and travel, appeared to him and told him that, should he leave his family and seek out a new home for himself, he would found a race of great men and be venerated as their ancestor. Specifically, he told him that he was destined to find his new home and would know instinctively when he found it he did without telling him anything about the place itself. After travelling for many years, undergoing many hardships and becoming more and more irritable all the while, he eventually came to a forest much like hundreds of others that he had passed through on his journey. Disgruntled, he sighted a wild boar and threw his spear at it with such strength that it pierced its skull and went straight out the other side. As he headed over to retrieve his kill, Cynwrig remarked that he might as well just declare this to be his home, given that the land seemed to have food enough to sustain him - at which moment Lugus appeared for the second time to commend him, bless the spear and form a woman, Muirenn, from cloud to be his wife. It was Cynwrig who subsequently built Din Paldyr on the nearby hill and who instituted the Lugnasad as the Wotaddani’s most important festival and Lugus as their patron god. The Wotaddani still have the head of a boar impaled on Cynwrig’s spear as their emblem and, indeed, it is that self-same spear that is named in the title of First Spear, whose holder alone may wield the legendary weapon; moreover, all Wotaddani are supposedly descended from the children of Cynwrig and Muireen, with the lines of the High Chieftains and the Great Chieftains able to trace their ancestry along the line of male inheritance all the way to their three sons in much the same way that Roman patrician families will often identify themselves as descended from particular gods.
