Count Dankula fined £800/$1100 for making a joke +Protests

Count Dankula (Markus Meechan) after waiting two years for the courts to decide that he was guilty, was now sentenced and received an £800 fine for training his pug to raise his paw (effectively doing a Nazi salute) at the phrases "Gas the Jews" and "Sieg Heil" as his girlfriend was "always ranting and raving about how cute and adorable her wee dog is so I [Markus] thought I would turn him into the least cute thing I could think of, which is a Nazi."

Now yes, I'm perfectly aware as to why someone would get offended at this because of it's obvious references to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, but the original intent of the video was to jokingly make his dog "un-cute" to mess with his girlfriend, he never intended for it to go viral, this was done in his own home, he was never calling for violence against Jews or anyone else, humor and offense are both subjective, he or any "Neo-Nazi" groups were never using that video as a recruiting tool (I'm laughing that I even had to type that one...) and no one was ever required to watch his content, if they didn't like it (which is understandable,) they could have just left that video and never watched his content again.

Sure he only got an £800 fine and never received any jail time, but in my opinion, the very fact that he even got found guilty in the first place because the court decided that context didn't matter sets a dangerous precedent for freedom of speech in the UK, and many seem to agree as there have been a march throughout London, not only in support of him, but also for the right to free speech.

Even if you don't care about what has happened, or that any attack on freedom of speech isn't an issue, I'm sure we can mostly agree that this was also a waste of tax-payers money and police resources.

I would like to hear your opinions on the matter, whether you agree or disagree, because unlike my government, I can accept that not everyone thinks like me and I'm aware that subjectivity exists.

It was a joke.
Just because it was offensive doesn't mean he should be fined.

If someone made a joke about gassing blacks or homosexuals, it's still a joke.

Plus, there shouldn't be laws against hate speech because hate speech is arguably too subjective to legislate. What I consider hate speech could be very different than what you or someone else thinks is hate speech.

Yeah if you've seen his livestreams then you'll see that he's definitely able to pay it off if he wanted to.

If someone is saying "Gas the:" jews, niggers, whites, etc to a dog in their own home with the intent to send this to their girlfriend and not the intent to have this go viral, which was the case, then yes, of course somebody should be allowed to say these things. If someone finds it disgusting or hateful, then there is no requirement for them to watch it. Humor and offense is subjective so any laws built around subjective reasoning is difficult to enforce and has caught a comedian in the crossfire. Now if Markus specifically made the video to tell his viewers to go out and attack jews or anyone else (or calling for violence in any other way), then he should've gotten prison time, but that wasn't the case.

Yeah I heard about this, it's pretty neat because if he were to just accept this then that would give the government the go ahead to expand this further, by that I mean raising said amount each time someone was sentenced and furthering the extent to which this is carried out; who's to say people who make jokes about the government won't be next, then people who merely disagree with their policies?

If you win then I would assume that you wouldn't need to take the punishment, but then again the UK's legal system isn't exactly known for being logical.
