Founded 2nd March 2018

Soviet Democracy is a newly-founded Cold War-themed region, with great prospects for the future. Despite the region's theme, we are not open exclusively to left-wing members - all non-extremist ideologies (e.g. not fascism, Stalinism etc.) may be practised and argued for freely in our region.

The region currently contains a fully-developed and ready-to-go government system, consisting of an executive branch (the Politburo) and a legislative branch (the Supreme Soviet).The Politburo consists of an elected President, the World Assembly Delegate, the Founder and any additional Commissars appointed by the President (such as Foreign Affairs and Interior). The Supreme Soviet consists of a variable number of elected members, although there must be a minimum of three at all times. At the beginning of each Supreme Soviet term, the elected members shall nominate a Chairman, who shall preside over the body and shall also hold a reserved seat on the Politburo.

Regional Roleplay is scheduled to begin soon, once a cartographer is formally decided upon. There is already a very high interest in roleplay throughout the population, as we are attempting to take a unique approach. The regional roleplay will be based in the year 1958, in an alternative Cold War timeline. We want to give roleplayers the opportunity to rewrite history, create proxy wars that never happened, stage diplomatic crises and everything in between. We are expecting the roleplay to be a major regional focus once fully operational.

Foreign Affairs Commissar Appointed

In a recent announcement, the President of Soviet Democracy named New Elvish Lands of the South as the region's first Commissar of Foreign Affairs. As you might expect, the Commissar of Foreign Affairs is in charge of all matters diplomacy-related, including the responsibility of reviewing each embassy request individually. On the topic of the appointment of New Elvish Lands of the South (otherwise known as NELotS, Ar or Zenstrum), the President was quoted as saying that they were by far the most capable candidate for the position, and that there was 'no contest'.

The Politburo of Soviet Democracy has been mulling over the idea of opening an off-site forum, although there are a couple of potential issues: whether it will be active enough, if it will detract activity from the RMB and Discord and whether the Government has enough time to both create and maintain it. Any opinions? We're open to hear them.

imo if the government is functioning fine without the forums there isn't any need to make one, but if you think it would help with the government's functions then maybe.

Forums at the minimum are good for security and record keeping. They also help keep track of discussion that doesn't get drowned out over time, such as with the RMB and to an extent with Discord. If the RMB and Discord server are highly active, a forum is likely to be not as active.

Yeah, if we were to open them that (along with diplomatic and administrative purposes) would probably be among our main reasons. I have started setting one up, however it is my first time doing so, so I don't think anyone expects it to be quite immaculate hah.
Right now, there is a bit of a general activity issue, and forums could potentially help out with that, at least I'd like to think so.

If you're having activity problems forums won't help tbh. You'll just have an inactive forum.

President Opens Commissariat for Culture

A few hours ago, the President of Soviet Democracy announced the formation of a new position - the Commissar for Culture is tasked with managing regional aesthetics, including the WFE, dispatch formats, and the upcoming off-site forum, managing regional media sources, hosting regional events and recording public opinion. Algermaine, a skilled graphic designer, was announced as the first office holder. Already, the new Commissar has begun working on a regional news source, 'Pravda SD' in the style of Labourwave - Soviet-themed modern aesthetic - already looking very jazzy from what we've seen.

Expansion of Diplomatic Relations

Four days ago, the region Conch Kingdom engaged in the construction of embassies and exchange of diplomats with Soviet Democracy - with our residents and theirs already familiarising themselves and getting on quite well, we expect a bright future in relations. The region has also recently forged relations with Haiku (in order to help us practice our poetry) and is in the process of establishing relations with The Progressive Industrious Union, a small and developing region. It is also the intent of Soviet Democracy to strengthen its relations with The Communist Bloc, with the two regions already proving suitable allies for one another.

Administrative Denouncement of Harassment

The Politburo of Soviet Democracy today delivered a statement denouncing harassment in all of its forms, and adopting a zero-tolerance policy on the matter. The President delivered the following address in the Discord server:

[...] Soviet Democracy will never, ever tolerate harassment of any kind whatsoever. We will not house harassers and we will not collaborate with them. If you ever experience harassment here or elsewhere, you need to report it immediately. If you think a peer may be being harassed, again, you need to report it immediately.

This comes following an NS-wide campaign against harassment, following events in a certain region. Those involved in the said case were declared persona non grata immediately in Soviet Democracy, as two of the main perpetrators were former officials in SD (both of which left hastily following administrative disputes).

FA Commissar Removed; Government Is Recruiting

Soviet Democracy Foreign Affairs Commissar, Ar, or Zenstrum, was today removed from office & banned from the region immediately following after it was discovered that he had ties to DOS player Atero/Langor. We will not provide further details on the matter due to their sensitive nature, and the fact that most already know what happened. We will, however, advise that other regions remain vigilant of this person and any further associates of this DOS player.

With the position now vacant, and other positions left to fill, Soviet Democracy is now looking for capable players interested in positions of responsibility. We would like to reiterate that despite our region's theme, we are not ideologically orientated and welcome all non-extremist members with open arms. Soviet Democracy Foreign Update

Appointments and Elections

The Supreme Soviet Election concluded recently, defining the legislative governmental body of Soviet Democracy. Algermaine, Greater Abnia and Mother Kurczak have been elected into the Supreme Soviet as of 16/05/2018 officially and de facto as of 21/05/2018, with the responsibilities of altering and forming laws for the region.

Furthermore, president Ex Patrian SSR has appointed Ehplam (aka Malphe) as Soviet Democracy's Commissar for Internal Affairs as of 23/05/2018, a position responsible for handling regional affairs, moderating the regional message board and managing information publications. Malphe has also pledged to publish consistent updates to the GP forum embassy of SD, in order to increase SD's presence on the world stage.

Legislation

The first ever piece of Soviet Democracy's legislation has been passed with unanimous support from the Supreme Soviet, namely the Foundation Act, as proposed by Algermaine. The act establishes the framework and rules of the Supreme Soviet and seeks to establish a public voting record, in the interests of transparency of government. All votes and proceedings are currently being conducted solely on SD's discord server.

Culture

Recently, Soviet Democracy has changed it's flag from the older, less popular version (the crest of which displayed in earlier updates in this thread) to a newer, more colourful flag, designed by Algermaine with contributions from Malphe, who centred the crest which was previously slightly off the centre.

Soviet Democracy Endorsements Skyrocket!

Soviet Democracy has made itself a goal of upping it's regional WA endorsements through encouragement of WA residents to endotart, through telegrams for the most part (and a healthy dose of purging inactive non WAs), and has been met with great success! SD has risen dramatically in endorsements and has overtaken regions far older and larger regions. We currently stand at 5th place with 16.5 average endorsements, and further efforts are being made to up that number even further.

Legislature Update, Jobs Act and Recreation Act passed!

Algermaine has been the principle mover and shaker in the legislature of Soviet Democracy thus far, as the activity of the Supreme Soviet (SD's legislative body) displays. Most recently the JOBS ACT has been passed, giving each Commissar their commissariat, an opportunity for citizens to get involved in the government of our region. These include the Interior Commissariat which is responsible for this update, as an example. Furthermore, the RECREATION ACT has been passed and AMENDED, formally marking the start of SD's roleplay.

Presidential election held, Algermaine elected!

Siege (Ex Patrian SSR) has served as SD's acting President, but now that SD's first Presidential election has been held the head of State is now formally elected. Three candidates ran- Kurczak (Mother Kurczak), Algermaine and Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia. Kurczak ran as a non-biased President, who would trust in the Commissar's ability to perform their roles. Algermaine ran as the opposition, basing his campaign on a political revolution against the establishment, claiming that he was the only member of the region who "isn't involved with foreign governments and special interests". Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia, the lesser known candidate of the three, ran as the Anarchist candidate, claiming that "the Communist Party of Soviet Democracy is a dictatorship".

Voting was conducted on Soviet Democracy's discord server, with a considerable turnout. 34 residents voted all in all, and the results of the election are as follows.

"Today, I will take the office of President now that our Founder and Former President Ex Patrian SSR leaves office. I thank Soviet Democracy for this immense opporunity, not just for myself, but for everyone. We will get around the appointments and other duties to make the transition as easy as possible."

Algermaine was inaugurated as the President of the Soviets at 13/06/2018, and immediately went about appointing new Commissars to fill the government- whilst retaining Malphe as Commissar of Internal Affairs, Algermaine appointed Schmalensee as Commissar for Foreign Affairs, South Krimelski as Commissar for Culture, and Saerisa as the new position of Commissar for Justice. The purpose of this new role was explained at length.

"The Commissariat of the Judiciary will be formed just before I appoint the Commissar of the Judiciary. The purpose of the Commissariat is to handle cases of trespass against the region, malicious intent, or any other harmful action that Soviet Democracy must curtail. After sufficient investigation from the Commissariat of Internal Affairs, prosecution will be held, while a legal defense will also be provided if necessary. They will be required to pass a test regarding their knowledge of the constitution. The Commissar of the Judiciary reserves the right to create additional positions as he sees fit."

The world has changed, nations have risen, nations have fallen.

Hello i'm The Justinian Horde the latest chartographer to have have the honor of creating the maps for this vibrant and conflict filled region. And by maps I do mean maps as there is a nation map, and an alliance map, both of which generally get updated every monday between 10:00 and 22:00 GMT.
The region has had a few time skips so the current year is 1981 and the current month is april.
