History Discussion Thread, Trial Version

Postby United Muscovite Nations » Fri Mar 02, 2018 12:29 pm

This thread is intended to be an attempt at a thread for historical discussion in-general, as some discussion that gets around on NSG doesn't really belong in any other threads. I'm hopeful this will work out and will be received enthusiastically, but I have my doubts. Without further ado, here are some general guidelines.

Topics that this thread is for:
>Discussion of Historical Events, either generally or in-depth
>Discussion of various historical movements
>Historiography/metahistory
>sharing academic book recommendations
>discussion of fields related to history such as archaeology or anthropology
>Discussion of the popular conception of history (though try to limit Pop-History content).

What the thread is not for:
>Political discussion with dates (as a caveat, discussion of ideology in as a meta topic is entirely appropriate, but keep it historical and not political)
>Homework help, though asking for help with finding sources is fine.
>Pseudohistory: Discussing controversial historical theories is fine, but leave Ancient Astronaut hypothesis, Holocaust denial, etc. in the trash where they belong. When arguing about controversial topics, try to cite academic sources as a good-faith gesture to show that you're not trolling

With that out of the way, I'll start us out with a basic topic for a poll that is accessible to everyone (though if someone wants to suggest a more niche poll later in the thread, simply post your proposal), what areas of history are you most interested in? Out of general time periods, I'm most interested in Late Antiquity and the Early Modern period. You can get more specific than that, but for the first poll, I want to keep it simple and accessible. In more specific terms, I'm interested most in Christian theology in the Late Roman Empire, Russian history in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Soviet history.

I first got interested in Antiquity when I was a kid and saw the History Channel special Engineering an Empire. I've been hooked since and have collected various things to study. Becoming interested in Christianity got me interested more in the religious aspect of things and the rapid changes in late antiquity that made the world look more like the one we know today. As far as Russian history, that interest is largely due to being a fan of Russian literature, as well as my interest in Russian spirituality and military history.

I'm mostly interested in relatively specific topics, like general Irish history, Australian history, and more modern African history (Colonial period to now). Also been getting interested in stuff like the Great Northern War, as well as the Opium Wars. Roman Republic are the Punic Wars and cool as well.

I don't know as much about African history as I'd like, but here's a good documentary series by Africanist Basil Davidson if you're interested. he goes pretty in-depth about the social systems of various African states in the past: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X75COneJ4w8

For African-American history, a good resource is http://www.blackpast.org/ ; the site looks pretty basic and old, but it's actually linked with an academic foundation, and is very good. It was recommended to me by a Professor.

As a historian, I focus more on the early modern times. Specifically European history from 1500-1980, given that it makes up the "history" section of my double-major. The politics and events revolving around the great European powers has always fascinated me, especially the HRE and the rivalry of Prussia and Austria. As many who have seen me on the forums know, I love Prussia and the German Empire. But other than these two, I do enjoy reading about the events and politics of other nations during the timeframe - the UK, France, Scandinavia, and Russia, for instance.

What do you mean by "pre Bronze age collapse"? I Googled it and Late Bronze Age collapse came up, which coincides with the Greek Dark Ages.

The period between the beginning of civilization and Classical Antiquity, basically.

I like historic irony.

For example, a folk tale, believed to be true for centuries, later believed to be untrue and irrational, finally proved true for reasons completely unrelated to anything anyone had ever supposed.

I know at least a couple of philosophers made prophetic predictions like this for completely the wrong reasons. The concepts of atoms is one, which for like two thousand years was considered metaphorical at best.

Then there's the opposite, where people make good observations grounded on wrong principles, like phlogiston, probably arising from the wacky Greek elements and the apparent problem of where all the essential fire was hiding.

I'm a great fan of legal history, and I take as many university courses in it as I can muster. By now, I have quite a body of books, documents and notes on the subject. I love history in general, though, and there is no period that is not interesting on further inspection.

Do you accept the Donation of Constantine as legitimate? My, I thought we were getting to respecting each other more. You really did throw that all out of the window there.

In all seriousness, and to move away from dunking on internet dweebs;

My main areas of interest lie in modern political and geopolitical history, generally from about the mid-1800s onwards, especially in Latin America and the Middle East. American labour/union history as well. Understanding what dynamics shaped the evolution of different countries and groups, and how political parties, movements, and governments as we know them today came to be.
