Royal Pretender set to return from exile, sparking protests!

Postby Kacallia » Mon Feb 19, 2018 12:43 am

The Duke of Selin, the last heir of the ruling house of Kacallia has successfully petitioned the government of the republic to allow him entry into the nation of his birth.

After the monarchy was overthrown, the entire surviving royal family was forced into exile. Since then no member of the royal house has entered their former dominion, except covertly. Prince-President von Höhengrün however has long hinted that he disagreed with the law.

This has proved to be the case, as shortly after the death of the former King, four months ago, his heir sent his application. This was kept secret as different factions feuded over it. The first notice the public became from the issue was from the publication of a legal brief, prepared by the president's legal office, arguing that a citizen could not be denied entry. It was officially announced today that the Duke had been issued a passport. The opposition (SDP) has formerly protested, although the government (Central Coalition) seems divided about it. The crypto-royalist Whites are unsurprisingly in favor of the Prince-President actions.

Protests have occurred in every major city in the country. The protesters seem to be mostly from the left side of the political spectrum, and in addition to protesting the Duke of Selin's return, they are also calling for redistribution of wealth, better treatment for minorities, and a higher minimum wage.

It is unsure at this point how this will effect the election campaigns that are currently underway. Populist candidate Hermann Rosenkohl of the Volkspartei has responded to the events surrounding the return of the pretender, by ranting against the administrative state and insisting that the people decide.

The Volkspartei is expected to do unusually well this election, but has received criticism from both the left and right for its controversial proposals and barefaced populism.

King Charles Preston expresses his support for the exiled Duke of Selin.

"By divine right, the honorable Duke should sit on his rightful throne. At the very least, can he not live in his own land claimed by blood and God?"

The Liccean Convener, speaking on behalf of the Liccean people, has expressed his dismay at such a regressive step. The royalism is an anachronism, and is inimical to social progress - the Duke should absolutely be denied entry.

The Liccean governemnt fully supports the protests currently occurring, and the movements for the redistribution of wealth and better treatment for minorities.

Meanwhile, on the streets of the Kacallian capital, the police, pro-monarchists and conservative groups have begun noting the increasing appeareance of Liccean Communist Party flags and pamphlets amongst the daily protests:

Official Communique
Security Level: Public
Department: Foreign Office

On behalf of His Majesty and the government of San Hieronymi I would like to commend the government of Kacallia on their just decision to permit the return of the Duke of Selin from exile. Understanding the importance of the freedom of citizens and the value that a royal house possesses we are pleased that the Government of Kacallia has chosen to allow the Duke of Selin to return to his motherland. His Majesty has made known to me his intention of conferring a chivalric honour on the said Duke at the earliest opportune moment.

We hope that this move shall help bind our two nations ever closer, as we come to a deeper appreciation of our Royal Houses.

The government of Penguininia believes that the Duke of Selin may return to his native land but that a monarchy cannot be reinstalled and the Duke must live as a normal citizen.

The Lethen Empire hereby supports the return of the old Duke to his homelands. They further denounce the barbaric behaviors of the protesters and label them "bringers of anarchy and disorder". Not only do they bar someone who is innocent from coming home, but they flaunt the barbaric ideals of communists. This evidently leaves them no more credibility than those who plagiarized their essays in college.

In a rather more encrypted message, the Lethen Empire has expressed its support for the Duke if he wishes to reinstall the monarchy, and is willing to sell arms or even direct intervention if given incentives. We are also willing to provide support in suppressing the protesters. However, if you reject our support, we will take no further actions, unless you reveal this message to the public. That will prompt us to oppose you.

Eoghan Ó hÓgáin, Duke of Machaire Lainne, on behalf of her majesty Queen Aoibheann MacAmhlaidh,

The kingdom of Scoti supports the prince in his endeavors, and while we are of the understanding there is no choice but to depose a ruler from time to time, there has yet to be a reason presented to that would keep this duke from his familiar throne. Until such time evidence has been presented to us, we will support his claim to his titles and rights.

"Who do these nations think they are?" ask Rosenkohl as he began his speech. "First there are those, that say we should crown the Duke of Selin, as if they have any say about it. The Queen of Scoti, should remember that she is the ruler of the Scoti, not the Kacallia. The same goes for his majesty in Whuossau!" The candidate pounded the table in front of him as he spoke. "I assure you that I will not allow Kacallia to bow to foreign power. It is through resisting the encroachment of foreign influence that we, the people, will protect our sovereignty. The whiny left, says we should fear the duke, but I tell you we have more to fear from foreign interlopers as from on of a single patriot.

For in contrast to the demands that we restore the monarchy, there are the more sinister demands that we never restore it. It is from these far left nations, that are our greatest enemies. They preach to us their poisonous gospel of class conflict and internationalism. For they seek to divide and dilute us, in order to weaken us! But they will fail.

I assure you that right now they are plotting against us, have you not seen the flags of foreign nations at the protests, has not there been communist literature handed out? These Liccean plants, they should be arrested. For these are not the people, but the agents of our enemies. Traitors, working for Liccean lucre.

The government refuses to do so, they are either incomptent or too weak. They have compromised and therefore have become themselves compromised. The people must vote in a new government, a party of the people, not for the rich or elite. Not just for the workers, but a party for all Kacallians!"

The tv was turned off, and the viewers looked at each other. "It is not illegal what the protestors are doing. How can such a hot head be elected?" asked one.

"Perhaps the people are really angry, like him. This whole situation is very politically inconvenient. But it is going to get worse. The President has informed me that he will allow the late king to be buried in the royal tomb. Next week will the Landstag debate if it will be a state funeral."

"Perhaps monarchy is not as bad as this, demagogue."

"Perhaps, but it either will be the end of social democracy in Kacallia, if we do not do something about it."

The Jade City, Chang'an, China

The court ministers were in session today, and Cao Song of Wei really didn't want to deal with their nonsense today. Yet here he was, wearing the hanfu and with a guan on his head and standing at attention in the great throne room while the day's bureaucratic business went on. Endlessly. He had once enjoyed this when he actually got to take part in it, but now as a mere imperial prince, he grew bored quickly while the ministers rattled off on their reports and opined on His Majesty's ideas for edicts. His Majesty himself, The Shenchaisheng Emperor, compounded the boredom by having talking carefully and selectively...so...slowly. When emperor you have been for fifty-eight years, reckless you won't be.

After nearly three hours of debate, announcements, a kowtow from a Southeast Asian State's ambassador, eunuchs constantly refreshing the tables, and four other memorials to the throne before him....the eunuch announcer finally shouted so that all could hear "ANNOUNCING A MEMORIAL TO THE THRONE FROM THE PRINCE OF WEI!" The eunuch then took out the traditional wood and bamboo book in which the memorial was written, and read it aloud before the throne room. The memorial, in its convoluted and artful classical Chinese, called upon the imperial government to support openly the exiled pretender. It requests that at the least requests that the state puts diplomatic pressure on the Kacallian state to return the pretender to his home and his throne, and at the very most (with the emperor's gracious approval) to use military force to enforce the pretender's claim and make Kacallia the first western tributary of Yu.

Murmurs erupted and spread like wildfire throughout the throne room. His majesty sratched his head and bade Cao Song to come forward as well as Guan Kui, the de facto Chancellor of the Realm. Both the eunuch and Cai Song kowtowed before the throne, and bowed before each other. The Son of Heaven signaled for them to rise.

"What do you make of this, Guan Kui?" His Majesty said. "Our grandson's memorial is much different from the one's read today."

"Radiant Highness, a memorial such as this is unprecedented." Kui said. "The middle kingdom has not taken any aggressive actions since the dark days before the great Yu Dynasty."

"You are right, Grand Secretary." Song coolly replied. "It has been the present emperor above's policy to seek inward perfection since the great restoration. To say that we've been entirely isolationist is untruthful. Just today we received a kowtow from the foreigners for supporting them economically."

"Economically, not militarily, prince." Rui said curtly. "Besides, why should we care about such a trifle in a foreign land?"

"Two reasons, Bixia. It's our chance to show the world that Zhongguo is now going to reassert its natural, heaven ordained, authority over the world." Song said. "Secondly, it is the lawful and moral thing to do. Heaven ordains rulers to oversee their people, as their moral guardians. We must restore morality to Kacallia."

"Nonsense. The people are too wicked to be morally guided." Rui said. "They must be overseen with a firm, fearful, hand. We cannot-"

"No." The Lord of Ten Thousand Years said. Both men bowed. "We will not allow this debate to wallow into legalist and confucian nonsense. Stay on topic, and continue to convince us of your sides. Please."

"Of course Your Imperial Majesty."
"Yes, Radiant Highness."

"Even if we did so to restore morality, this duke has clearly lost Heaven's Mandate." Rui continued. "There's no point in supporting him. He has no children either, from what your memorial says."

"Kacallia is not a celestial governed state, Grand Secretary." Song said. "They are a western barbarian kingdom. They believe heaven grants dynasties the right to rule in perpetuity. Besides we there is another reason why, Your Imperial Majesty, there is a danger in letting this state fail. The immoral protestors are calling for minority rights and the...redistribution of wealth. I fear that if we do not enforce the claims of the monarchy of Kacallia, a new communist state will rise."

The room was dead silent. Cao Song immediately kowtowed again. The word 'communist' was a taboo word that was forbidden from ever being spoken. The Son of Heaven had restored the chinese throne after overthrowing the PRC in 1963 after two years of war. The Son of Heaven had lost two sons to starvation and cannibalism in the Great Famine.

"Indeed." His imperial majesty said quietly. "We will allow you to begin diplomatic contact with the Duke and Kacallia, but war is out of the question until there is a credible threat."

"I humbly accept and thank your imperial radiance for this honor." Song said, kowtowing again. Leaving with the minister for war, Cao Song drafted a diplomatic missive which was sent to Kacallia and should be recieved in a matter of days.

Official Diplomatic Edict From The Empire of Yu, The Lords of All Under Heaven

To The Government of The Kingdom of Kacallia,

I have been endowed by His Majesty The Emperor to represent all of Huaxia in opening diplomatic relations with your country in the regards to the treatment of your exiled prince. In this capacity I have been instructed to urge and encourage your people to not only allow the duke to return to your land, but to restore the duke to his rightful throne. Heaven decrees that sovereigns rule over the masses. The deposition of the monarchy is not only immoral, it is against the very order of the universe. Now obviously metaphysics won't be the sole reason why you should.

Our government is willing to offer lucrative trade, investments, and gifts for your country as well as for the duke himself. We also request that you do your utmost to crush the rebels calling for the redistribution of wealth. Our coutnry suffered the horrors of socialism before. We cannot allow it to spring up again. Execute them now so we won't have to ourselves.

From,
Ambassador Cao Song, Prince of Wei, Blood of The Yu Dynasty, Professor of Confucian Law at the University of Shanxi

Suppressing a shiver as his breath misted in the cold morning air, the buzz of numerous loudspeakers wrestled with the chanting and general cacophony of the crowds. Pushing his way forward through the throngs of people, he was battered by the opposing chants - those who had gathered in support of the speaker on the assembled platform, and the crowds of protesters in opposition.

Although the chants and declarations of each side's supporters melded largely into a single, indistinguishable cacophony, the voice of the speaker cut clearly above the rest, thanks to the industrial sized amplifiers that had been sited on the stage:

''ot only is it the Duke's right... as a legal citizen of this country to return, but our society as a whole will be enriched by his restoration. His honour, the Duke of Selin, literally embodies the long and glorious history of this nation, our nation, and its people. There is no bett..''

He continued gently pushing his way through the crowd, edging closer towards the boundary between protestors and the assembled audience. He could see him now, the speaker - Hans Wesselstein, a local White party politician. Although a relatively small fish in political terms, he had gained media fame as an ardent supporter of the Duke, and also notoriety for his anti-union views and encouragement of violent strikebreaking by right-wing vigilante groups.

Denikin carried on pushing his way through, into the mass of the audience who, judging by their t-shirts and flags, had gathered in support of Wesselstein's programme. The crowd was much more packed here than on the fringes with the protesters, and the increased security around the stage meant getting any closer would be risky. Wesselstein continued to drone, his amplified voice filling Denikin's ears and reverberating through his chest.

''These protesters call themsleves Kacallians, yet some of them are even in the pay of foreign powers, paid to disrupt the very fabric of our nation itself! We are a free society, but what free society can survive if it tolerates su...''

He cast his gaze around behind him, trying to figure out the best exit - yes, over there, where the crowd would disperse quickest.

This would have to be close enough - any nearer, and he would undoubtedly be apprehended immediately.

Taking a deep breath, he pulled the revolver from his coat, and pointed it toward the stage. Members of the audience immediately beside him screamed, but too late to make any difference now - squeezing the trigger 5 times, Denikin pumped a five round burst into the speakers gathered on the platform. Whether it was to take cover or because he had hit his mark, he did not know for sure, but he allowed himself a brief moment of hope as he watched the speakers on the stage collapse seemingly in slow motion to the floor.

Dropping his revolver, he ran, scrambling madly, and disappeared into the screaming mass of panicked bystanders.

A man stepped through the door of the plane to the eruption of cheers and applause. He looked somewhere in his sixties, although he was only 58. However, his grayed hair and wrinkles did not diminish his looks. Instead they imparted the dignity and seriousness that come with age. His suit was long out of fashion, but of the finest quality. On his fingers was an assortment of gold rings.

He had descended the stairs and reached the lectern by the time the music stopped. The Duke of Selin cleared his throat to begin his speech. As he scanned the assembled crowd before him, his thoughts turned to all that had brought him here. Suppressing his emotion, the royal Pretender began.

"Thank you all for the warm welcome, it has been a long time since I have been in my homeland. So long, that I do not remember it. I was not yet born when my mother began her flight from the monastery where she had been hiding. No, I was born in a old pub table as my mother waited for the foreign warship to take her to safety. To leave in such circumstances, although I do not remember them has added another inch to the whole in my heart left by having to leave my dear Kacallia.

But, to be welcomed like this, I feel that my heart if full, and the hole in it fully patched. For that I wish to thank you, my friends. And to my friends that are not here, I thank you also. You have been true to me and my father's house, through all our difficulties and that is praiseworthy. I wish that I may one day repay you all.

To my enemies, for I am not naive to think I have none. To my enemies, I hope that we too can be friends or at least cease to be enemies. For I am a peaceful man, and a peace loving man. From this day on I reckon no one as my enemy, even if he reckons me as his.

As I return home, I hope to serve my people, for although I have not inherited my father's title, I have inherited a sense of duty. I may never reign over Kacallia, but I promise you, I will serve her people.

So let us all live together in our beautiful homeland. Thank you and God bless you."

After he finished speaking, the Duke of Selin disappeared into a waiting car, leaving the press in a frenzy. Meanwhile, the news of the Pretender 's arrival, his avoidance of protesters and his speech produced another frenzy across the land.

The republican activists angered that they had failed to protest at the airport, they had been unaware of the time and location of the arrival, rushed into the streets with double the zeal. In several cities rioting broke out, especially those where the inspired royalist joined them as counter protesters.

To the Honorable House of Kacallia,
Our records indicate the Duke of Selin rented the entire top floor, the Royal Suites of the Gold Bar Hotel in Freedom Dome for three months. He claimed good credit through various parties in the republic of Kacallia. During his stay, he was provided with a variety of services befitting a free nation, including lady companionship, rare comestibles, quality wine and liquors in abundance, fine tailoring, consulting musicians, poets, and entertainers, and jewelry for his companions.
We have not received payments for his stay. We made several attempts at contact, but were rebuffed repeatedly.
We wish to have our hotel bill settled. This would amount to $90,000,000 Universal Commons credits a substantial fee for a brief three month stay.
We await your prompt response.

Official Diplomatic Edict From The Empire of Yu, The Lords of All Under Heaven

To Ming Simeon and The Government of Kacallia,

Consider the Duke's debts paid for by the Yu Imperial Treasury. Guan Kui will have a fit, but an official imperial check is included with this dispatch. Do not come about hawking debts again like a vulture or I'll have your hotel reduced to rubble.

We are pleased to hear of the duke's return unharmed, but are increasingly disappointed with your state. You've not returned him to power, nor have you dispersed your protestors. Laziness is a not a virtue, Kacallians. We once again offer our continuing support.

Simeon Ming stroked his pointed beard, then adjusted his fine leather hat. Heavy gold rings adorned his fingers and purple lace spilled from the cuffs of his silk jacket. He took a sip of spiced tea from a cup on the table. He watched several television screens from his overstuffed chair. He clicked a button and a picture of rioting appeared in Kacallia. Something about royals and republicans.

He thought, "Where there is trouble, there is profit. One mans sorrow is another mans gain."

He spoke to his second, "Charlie, get me whatever you can about Kacallia and this Yu or whatever it is."

Charlie bowed. About ten minutes later, he came back with a stack of printouts, several newspapers, and a thumb drive. Charlie put a tray with the material on the side of the desk. Charlie then stepped away from the desk. "Is there anything else sir."

Simeon Ming, "No." Charlie Bowed and walked away. Simeon Ming sat at the desk reading through the papers and newspapers making notes and gathering facts. He had an old fashioned pad and a gold laced fountain pen which he used to make notes. He put in the thumb drive into a computer on his desk and read through the country study in Encyclopdia Commonsia. There was not much on this country. It intrigued him. He drank some more spiced tea. He wanted to find out more.

The Government of the Kingdom of Hyrule, in the Wisdom granted us by the Great Goddess Hylia in her guidance, seeks not to interfere in the matters of the existing Republic — should nonviolent reconciliation between the factions in support and in opposition to the return and possible reinvestment of the pretender be possible, we would be fully in support of such measures, but we will treat with whatever Government Kacallia has at its head.
