School lunches. What are they like

Hi everyone.

So I've heard that in some countries like France or the United States, you can eat lunch provided at the school. If you've had lunches like that, what did you eat? How expensive was it? Did everyone spend their entire lunch inside the cafeteria? How did you choose tables? What was your favourite school lunch?

It sounds so exciting as in my country, we don't have school provided lunch. They just let us out into the field to play and we have to bring our own sandwiches from home.

I never really ate at the school except during Middle School. Then, my family was going through a rough patch and I got free lunch. Usually, I got bosco sticks or the classy chicken sandwich. They were food at the least but certainly not anything to write home about. When I got to high school, I brought in my own lunch all the time or chose not to eat. Since, I was working in fast food at the time, not like I needed anything more to go down my gullet anyway.

Okay, here is the general consensus:
1. If your school is so healthy that you can barely even mention candy, you get something that qualifies as cardboard.*
2. If your school is sane, you get mediocre food.
3. If your school is pretty chill, you get food that looks and smells pretty good. No word on the taste, because I lived through #1 and I'm a little scurred of that again.

*No, seriously, I have seen some scary things.

Was this the initiative to make school food slightly healthy as opposed to serving the lowest grade food that even fast food restaurants rejected.

They have grades for food production, the choicest cuts are off to restaurants and supermarkets, then there's the second which goes to frozen foods, then processed meat, then the detritus, leftover bones and shit that is massed boiled and used for soups, pet food and etc.

Take a wild guess where school meat sat.

My school dinners were a loooooong time ago, but they were pretty decent. In those days, there were no ready meals or outside caterers so you actually had people going to the market for ingredients and then cooking. They'd never have won a Michelin star but the food was nutritious and tasty. Except for that weird green custard...

School food barely resembles food. It doesn't usually look like what it's supposed to look like. Don't get the school lunch.

Fortunately my shool had pretty decent school,meals, but I never ate the meals, instead I just a panini and Capri Sun which were quite nice.

I've seen video and read rumors that France provides the best school lunches in the world, it is cooked by an actual chef so France presumably spends more on it. It is just not the case at all in the US, it is nasty, disgusting industrial grade food. More or less slightly better in quality than prison food. You're better off bringing food from home or simply not eating during school hours (if food from home isn't allowed).

If school lunch is the only food you ever get because your parents are deadbeats or unsuccessful. Well, sucks to be you.

I used lunch hour every school day, to finish homework assignments I just got. I rarely got any busy work I actually had to do at home. Was a pretty efficient and good use of my time.
