[ABANDONED] Absolute Zero For Heirs

Postby Dolor Mortis » Fri Feb 09, 2018 2:33 pm

This is a response to the need for an absolute primogeniture reversal issue.
Tell me how to improve.
Title: Absolute Zero For Heirs
Proposed by: Dolor Mortis
Valid for 461.3

[Desc:] Since you instituted the succession of your glorious line according to absolute primogeniture, everything seems to run smoothly. But suddenly, your ever-trusted advisor runs in looking shaken, with your twin sister following close behind.

[option 1:] "@@LEADER@@! There's a problem with your heir: you don't have any!" says @@RANDOMNAME@@. "With no children, you have no designated successor! Perhaps you should find a young countess to court, and continue the line."
[effect:] when supermarkets all over @@NAME@@ run out of "Rocky Road Pickle-sickles", no one comes to shop [same]

[option 2:] "Listen, why don't you just let your lovely sister handle it," @@RANDOMFEMALENAME@@ says sweetly while fixing your shirt. "I might be a girl, and I certainly as much life experience as you. Perhaps together, we can rule more efficiently." She pats your cheek.
[effect:] thousands of dollars in phone bills are charged to your account every month [co-rulers]

[option 3:] "We could always go and elect the leader that has same dynasty as you, my liege, says council member @@RANDOMNAME@@, while kowtowing to you. "All we would need is your approval."
[effect:] your great-great-uncle's 3rd cousin-twice-removed is your heir [elected primogeniture]

[option 4:] "Your reign of terror is at end, @@LEADER@@!" says plucky hero Captain @@NAME@@ as he smashes through your window. "We should have elections, lots of them! And you should not be the final authority, let them decide for themselves." He jumps through a different window on his way out.
[effect]: elections in @@NAME@@ confuse people used to @@LEADER@@'s iron-fisted rule [democracy]

[option 5]: "Here's an idea! Why don't you just abdicate to your next eldest kin from your closest shared ancestor? Just make sure the heir is male." says @@RANDOMNAME@@, a timeshare proprietor. "Just imagine it: no issues, no stress, no insults from Maxtopia. Just you, the beach, a drink, and all the nubile flesh you could see." He holds up a pamphlet. [agnatic primogeniture]
[effect]: @@LEADER@@'s abdication to a tropical paradise causes citizenry to distrust the royal house

[option 6:] "Their lack of faith is disturbing," says Darth @@RANDOMSURNAME@@ through a glaring mask. "You must find those rebel scum - I mean appointed advisors -
and "dispose" of them. You were born to rule; anyone who disagrees must be sent to the frozen wastes of Harboth."
[effect:] anyone who sweats in @@LEADER@@'s presence is choked by a mysterious force
[Desc:] Since you instituted the succession of your glorious line according to absolute primogeniture, everything seems to run smoothly. But suddenly, your trusted advisor runs in looking shaken, with your older sister following close behind.

[option 1:] "@@LEADER@@! There's a problem with your heir: you have none!" says @@RANDOMNAME@@. "Your eldest brother and all of his sons have congenital heart defects. If you suddenly drop dead, they would be unfit to rule! But his youngest son's sister is perfectly healthy and is a beautiful baby girl. Perhaps you should make her your heir, to save your line!" He shows you a picture of your niece.
[effect:] clothing companies are forced to dye everything in pink to avoid the heiress' temper tantrums [agnatic-cognatic succession]

[option 2:] "Listen brother, why don't you just let your lovely older sister hanle it," @@RANDOMFEMALENAME@@ says sweetly while fixing your shirt. "I might be a girl, but I certainly have more life experience than you. I think know exactly what to do." She pats your cheek.
[effect:] thousands of dollars in phone bills are charged to your account every month [co-rulers]

[option 3:] "We could always go and elect the leader that has same dynasty as you, my liege, says council member @@RANDOMNAME@@, while kowtowing to you. "All we would need is your approval."
[effect:] your great-great-uncle's 3rd cousin-twice-removed is your heir [male-preferenced primogeniture]

Just FYI: A draft of mine has already gone through an extensive feedback period, and is just going through a final clean-up on my end for submission. That said, you're absolutely welcome to take a stab. Issue topics are on the table until final publication, and are generally chosen on merit.

I love the title, though. Much better than what I came up with.

I wondered about that. Origionally it was to be about the agnatic succession plan. But Idk.

Hello. Not a bad little issue you got here. Now let's take a look:
If your elder brother and sister are alive, why are you the monarch?

The eldest brother was born with a heart defect, which made him ineligible for the throne because of the uncertainty of his reign. Since this is a response to absolute primogeniture, e.g. male inheritance, the older sister could not rule because she was female.

That seems like an unlikely reason in real life. Everyone dies eventually, but monarchies still let people at the right point in the family tree rule until that happens. Some ancient monarchies did have a "monarch must be healthy to rule" clause, but that shouldn't be assumed without player input. Besides, with modern medicine, a congenital heart defect is hardly a guaranteed death sentence. If the heir made it too adulthood, it can't be too bad.

That's not what "absolute primogeniture" means. "Absolute primogeniture" means that the first child inherits ("primogeniture"), regardless of all other factors ("absolute") such as gender.

After changing the script a bit (a lot), is the SW reference too overbearing?

My biggest concern is that option 2 assumes that your nation's leader is male, when that isn't true for many people.
Trust Factbooks, not stats.

The Ambassador of Essu Beti is Iksana Gayan and he's an elf. He’s irritable and a damn troll and everything he says is IC only. I would never be so tactless OOC.

National News Radio: A large-scale infrastructure project will soon be underway. During this time, for safety reasons, the island will be closed to tourists and foreign news agents. We do expect a minor loss in revenue due to this, but this will be greatly offset by both the long and short-term benefits of the infrastructure project. If your job is negatively impacted by the island closure, please send a letter or verbal message via courier to the Council so that we can add you to the list of beneficiaries of foreign aid.

Sorry mate, no, you're currently really bad at this. That needn't be a permanent state of affairs, but drafts like this make baby Jesus cry. You have to think more in terms of story.

[Desc:] Since you instituted the succession of your glorious line according to absolute primogeniture, everything seems to run smoothly. But suddenly, your ever-trusted advisor runs in looking shaken, with your twin sister following close behind.

First sentence is saying what decision you made, and saying things seem to be looking fine.
Second sentence says that some people want you for something.

You've missed out the actual issue again.

Improve time!
After instituting absolute primogeniture, your line is secure. However, the sudden, unexplainable death of your eldest has caused some of your advisors to worry, and in order to secure the line, some changes must happen.

I feel like you lack the basic knowledge of how inheritance laws work. I suggest that you do some research.

All modern western monarchies have some sort of primogeniture. In this case it would be very clear who is your successor, unless you are a new king. An example of this is Napoleon. When he was declared Emperor, he had no children, he made his brothers his heirs, although he excluded two of them. As Napoleon was the second oldest brother, his older brother was his heir apparent.

It is really important to have a clear line of succession. A lot of wars in the middle ages were caused by succession disputes because the rules weren't clear.

As far as the inheritance by women, there are four different systems. Salic law, forbids the inheritance by women outright. Semi-salic bans the inheritance of women so long as there is a male dynast alive. Male preference primogeniture is where the daughter of a monarch only inherits only when she has no brothers.

Some monarchies like Saudi Arabia do not have primogeniture, and the heir is appointed by the monarch probably with the agreement of the government. This is similar to tanistry, a system used in Ireland. Although that is closer to Denmark 's elective monarchy. The later two systems had a preference for the first born son, something Saudi Arabia lacks.
