Alright, kids, it's time to start actually caring about the Independents Cup. Why, you may ask? Well, Drawkland is finally not screwing the pooch when it comes to the knockout rounds! You may think like, what's the point? After all, nobody cares about the Independents Cup, you'd say.

But you should.

Here's the deal. Schottia and Bonesea are the only nations who've ever won this tournament, out of 3 editions. Guess who didn't enter this edition of the Cup? Bonesea. Guess who just got upset in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals? Schottia. Guess who's the number 3 independent team in the multiverse, and therefore, the de facto number 1 team in the Independents Cup at this point? Drawkland. Your girls.

You better book some tickets real quick.

vs OTAKUVERSE
The first round of the playoffs contained a lot of stress and anxiety for fans everywhere who bothered to tune in. After all, Drawkland has pretty much always flamed out in the Round of 16 here. Okay, the sample size may not be that large, but on average you'd expect Drawkland to flame out here. The Kick Corps isn't known for being all too clutch in the playoffs, and they've been known to falter to the easiest of opposition. Example: MD1, losing 4-3 to Mareibat. This match with Otakuverse could either go really well ... or really badly.

Otakuverse, as a nation, is pretty unknown. Surprisingly, they're a fellow Sonnelian nation, even though they're kinda under the radar. You know the type. The kind that sounds sorta familiar and you see them on a map once and you're like "oh yeah they exist I guess." Their nation is pretty much exclusively asian, high-tech, and a little raunchy. Their team, while it doesn't have a roster, is populated by a pretty consistent spread of short, skinny dudes.

After fluking into a win against Mercedini, the Otakus lost to Tinhampton and beat their group's punching bag Fungsland in order to advance to the next stage. This was fortunate for us, as they were a barely-qualified 1st-seed team and we were a highly qualified second seed, giving us an easy first round opponent. This game should work out fine.

The good news about starting the playoffs against a decidedly subpar team is that you can start a less-than-full strength lineup to rest your starters for better games. The first to score in the match was Jackie Crawford. In the 32nd minute, she took a pass from Leea May and shot it into the goal in one quick, compact, and deadly motion. The small crowd in Ashley Road mostly erupted into cheers, and Drawkland was up 1-0. It had taken them a little while to really get rolling, clearly, but at this point most of us expected the team to go off on those Otaku scrubs and end it. But that never came. The squad on the field, which was mainly comprised of the bench/reserve players, was evidently starting to get winded. We expected them to put the foot on the gas and roll to the victory, but they just couldn't pull it out.

Soon after halftime, the Otakus managed to break through the internationally inexperienced defense (well, minus Seon-Yann Slater, who merely got overwhelmed at the point of attack). They brought in the whole house, so to speak, overwhelming the defensive anchor Slater and pushing past Collins and and Tracy, who were only getting their second international cap in this match. They managed to shoot one past Savannah Everett, and the deed was done, tying the match at 1-all.

Despite having pretty much the entire second half to try and get a goal to break the tie, the Kick Corps suffered as they had in the first half - they simple couldn't get rolling. Perhaps blame it on the inexperience of the squad as a whole and its chemistry. This is one of the first times Michael Starre has ever fielded an entirely backup squad to start the match, with even stalwarts like Arrowsword and Ellzidan warming the benches. It definitely showed too, but Starre was apparently too stubborn to try putting in the stars to end the match mercifully.

In the press interview after the game, Starre affirmed that this was to force the backups to play better as a team and finish the match themselves. "I want them to understand how much work it takes to excel at this level," he said, "Bringing in Madison or the Elf would've probably brought us a victory sooner or easier but I don't want to raise a team bailed out by a few talented individuals. Sooner or later these backup players may be the starters and there will be nobody else to bail them out. If we're going to progress beyond our current situation of playing mediocre in small tournaments and simply holding our breaths in the World Cup group stage, we need to be a more mature and responsible team. I hope this match made our ladies realize this."

Strong words, eh? Anyway, after a tense 45 minutes, the regular time ended and the match was forced to go to Extra Time, the scoreboard still showing 1-1. While Otakuverse is technically a Sonnelian team .... it would be hella hard to support them if they beat us and went on in the playoffs. We needed to end this. We needed to win the game.

For this game, the hero was one that you'd find a little unlikely. Kaitlyn Axelson, the backup Center Mid, is the backup who gets perhaps the least playing time. Playing second fiddle to an immortal elf who's spent at least 60% of her life playing and mastering the sport is a real tough position to be in. Whenever she got playing time it was generally out of position on the wings, which isn't her strength. She's always been a center anchor, and her run captaining the Kayo Queens this last season really proved her worth at this.

But despite her lack of experience at the international level in her true position, despite her physically smaller stature (for a Drawkian), she made herself known in this match. And the biggest example of that would be her scoring the match-winning goal in extra time. After a great slide tackle turnover by Seon-Yann Slater, the field quickly began to reverse, and the Corps ran the other way on a breakaway. With the larger size and longer legs of the players, our Drawkians easily scaled the field in seemingly moments. Kaitlyn Axelson received the ball off a pass, and despite the usual plan to dump the ball off to a striker for a better read, Axelson saw an opening in the defense and exploited it quickly. She reared back and fired the ball in, the sudden shot catching the Otaku keeper off guard and sending the ball into the net.

The Drawkian crowd in attendance was already hopping and getting louder as the Corps had gotten the turnover, and when the ball hit the net they exploded. This was 13 minutes into the first extra time period, and the Corps were able to lock up the defense and cruise into the win. And thus for the first time in 4 years, Drawkland was on to the Independents Cup Quarterfinals.

vs EAST VORMSI
Coming off the high of actually advancing in the Independents Cup, the team was definitely favored to win against East Vormsi. The Puffins, as the cold islands' team is called, stayed stride for stride with Abanhfleft in the group stage, drawing them on day 1 and winning their next 2 games to grab the second qualification spot in the group. East Vormsi is technically a subsidiary of Schottia, and their players can play for the Schottic NT for the World Cup and such, but decided to enter this IC as a nation to round out numbers. And for their players to actually get playing time rather than rotting on the star-studded Schottic bench.

This game was a must-win. With Drawkland taking out Otakuverse themselves and Juvencus tragically losing to Mercedini by one penalty kick in the first round, Drawkland is the last Sonnelian nation remaining in the Independents Cup. Not only for regional pride, but for just our own pride. In a tournament as sparse as the Independents Cup, it's a wonder our best performance was losing in the Quarterfinals. Of all the 8 names in the Quarterfinals, East Vormsi's was definitely the least heralded. If it were being heralded at all, that is.

For the first time in this cup, the Corps had to travel out of the familiar confines of New Belfast in order to play their match. This time they'd be playing at Dyerton, the Handon stadium which houses Port Sebastian. Among the neatly arranged townhouses and such, the Corps found a home in a hotel near the stadium, and got settled. They weren't gonna squander this chance for greatness. At the very least they could make their first semifinal appearance and have the honor of being assblasted by Schottia, right?

Well, the ladies were gonna give us a show.

The first half of the match was an absolutely rollicking ride. The gameplan here was clearly to leave defense on the backburner and take lots of chances at goals and turnovers. If there was one fault of the Otakuverse match, it was that it was pretty much played too safe. It was full of likely less-confident reserve players, to be fair, but the simple fact remains that the match could've gone much smoother than a 1-2 extra time win. The lineup of this match was mixed, with Savannah Everett at keeper, Slater at CB with Warren and Pack at the back wings. Similarly, Axelson took the CM spot again, but with the normal starts Talla and Thompson at her flanks. The Corps strikers Madison and Archer were in, with Savage and Synder playing the wings. Basically, an evenly-split mix between starters and bench players, to increase confidence while also retaining power.

And boy did that mix deliver. The slightly-defensive side of the Puffins was clearly not prepared for the Drawkian onslaught that seems to pop up every now and again. The scoring started quickly. 5 minutes in, Iana Synder opened up the scoring with a strike from a steep angle close to the back line. Her shot barely curved around Marko Hillar and Lena Grabuste of East Vormsi to get into the net. The crowd hadn't even finished its initial cheering roar from the start of the match before they erupted into celebration. The Drawkians rocked the small stadium, but the small Vormsish crowd wouldn't be put down for long.

By the 15th minute, the match was tied up again. Kaija Koppel, one of the best players on the Puffins (she plays for a Nepharim club), managed to skirt through the defense. She exploited a small gap in the coverage between Slater and Pack and managed to get it through the fingers of Everett to score. The match wasn't even a quarter through and it was already tied one apiece. One thing was for sure, this match was going to be an absolute onslaught.

This prediction remained true. Despite many shots on the goal, the keepers remained relatively true. Tackles and turnovers were abounding everywhere, bad passes leading to opportunities on both sides. A particularly bad pass from Thompson back to Warren was intercepted mid-flight by Koppel, who ran into the box trying to take a shot. However, she made a quick skitter move to pass it sideways to Benkè Oulonagawi, the other actually professional striker on the team. Oulonagawi was wide open and easily redirected the ball into the goal to but East Vormsi up, 1-2. The Drawkian crowd was predictably speechless, being bested by these upstarts, but they wouldn't be upset for long.

By minute 30, the Corps was on an onslaught of the Vormsi goal, 4 players in and immediately around the box and another 4 in a very close vicinity. The ball crossed around back and forth, the Vormsi defense trying their best to clear out the ball. The Corps wouldn't have any of it, the more satellite players chasing out the ball and booting it back into the mix. It was off of one of those boots, off the foot of Axelson, which came right into the center of the goal. Kazia Savage was at the edge of the box, and as Axelson's deep pass spun away from the mess in front of the goal, Savage jumped at the back line to knock the ball back onto the pitch with a header. The ball flew forward and right to Rebecca Talla, who headed it herself right into the goal for the tying score.

Merely 7 minutes later, the Drawkian attack was back in the face of the Puffin defense, trying to get a tiebreaking score to hopefully have a lead going into halftime. Rico Hemnes of East Vormsi, the team captain, got ahold of the ball and simply walloped the thing across the field, clearing it past the midfield and towards the Drawkian goal. On a breakaway, Cynthia Pack was on an island against Kaija Koppel. Slater and Warren ran to try and catch up in time to put up worthwhile defense, but Koppel simply dribbled between the legs of Pack to send the ball past Everett and into the net. Just like that, the score is 2-3 East Vormsi lead.

Luckily, the Drawkians managed to answer just before half. Despite the half waning down, the Corps was not interesting in bleeding the clock, determined to make a stand to have an even halftime score. And that they did. The tactics switched to a mad passing game, several strikers in the box madly pushing the ball between each other, waiting for a defensive player to make a mistake and leave the net open. Juris Balodis went for a tackle on a pass from Savage to Archer, and totally whiffed. This left Corrie Archer wide open, and she took no hesitation in firing the ball to the back corner of the net. 3-3 read the scoreboard, and a few moments later play ceased for halftime.

Drawkland wasn't going to be playing a back-and-forth rollercoaster ride forever though. Halftime adjustments were made, and boy did they show. Right out of the gate, the Corps got the ball and immediately swarmed into the goal, a completely unabashed 9-10 player crush into the box. The Puffins were taken aback, and couldn't get in position quick enough to stop it. Corrie Archer, fresh off scoring the tiemaking goal, received a pass from Madison to score the tiebreaking goal, less than a minute into the second half. 4-3 Drawkland.

And suddenly, the Drawkian defense seemed to lock up. The Puffins were now faced with a seemingly impenetrable defense, opposite to what they'd come to expect in the first half. The mistakes they'd come to expect and exploit 3 times in the first half were now no longer happening. The dream of defeating a Top 20 World Cup side and making their way to an Independents Cup semifinal was slowly crashing down around them. It became just that, a dream. The Kick Corps began playing a much more conservative game, still making shots at turnovers and box crushes but making them less often and less populated. The next time they really went for it was in the 67th minute, with Corrie Archer once again making a shot into the goal to secure herself her first international hat trick.

By then the score was 5-3 and everyone knew how this match would turn out. The Drawkian crowd grew louder and louder every passing minute closer to the final whistle. The last goal of the match, scored by Mandy Thompson thanks to a mistake by Jena Ozoliņš defending her too close and being juked around, was merely met with slightly louder cheers. The match finally ended 10 minutes later, and the crowd went wild. The poor minority of East Vormsi fans went home disappointed. At least their ride home wasn't too much of a trip.

PREDICTIONS
Soon after the Drawkland-East Vormsi match began, the Schottia-Alpine Union match concluded. The Kick Corps and fans in Schottia didn't know it until after they left the stadium, but the Schottic juggernaut had fallen, a tragic 0-3 penalty shootout ending their IC run. There would be no repeat. No third title. Now the field is wide open. With Free Republics, Mercedini, and Alpine Union still alive, there's certainly a reputable final at hand no matter the semifinal results.

Of course, with Schottia gone, Drawkland is the de facto best team left in the tournament. While they're only ranked 20th in the world by World Cup standards, that's a huge advantage in Independents Cup standards. Mercedini is only ranked 39th, and Free Republics isn't far behind at 46th. Alpine Union sits at a mere 82nd, and as Drawkland's semifinal opponent, there's an opportunity for a big win.

You may think that since the Alpine Union technically contains part of Great Caledonia and North Hybernia, who were Drawkland's bogeyman nation for their first cycle, that this would be a bad mark. But this couldn't be further from the truth. Drawkland defeated the evil GC&NH in the 3rd place playoff of the Baptism of Fire (I'll never say it enough, but DEATH TO AMNAREI-ASUD)! Therefore, Alpine Union has zero superstitious power over the Kick Corps. All you can look at now is hard facts. Drawkland is clearly the better team compared to Alpine Union. It's no contest. I mean, sure, you'd say that about Schottia too, and Alpine Union beat them, but I'm considering that a complete fluke. In fact, I'd wager that the Schottia loss was actually divine intervention to bring a title to Drawkland. It's just the most obvious conclusion.

On the other side of the bracket we have Mercedini versus Free Republics. While they're pretty closely ranked World Cup-wise, I'd say Mercedini has the definite advantage. They've looked as in-form as ever this tournament, and against a squad like the Free Republics', they should have an unchallenging if not easy path to get to the final. Our prediction is heavily favoring the Golden Eagles.

If we lose or Mercedini lose and we end up facing Free Republics, there's some more superstition at hand. While we should have no problem wiping the floor with the Republican squad, the only time we've faced Free Republics was in a third-place playoff in our first tournament, the Global Cup of Soccer. We lost 0-2. But if things turn out like they did against Great Caledonia and North Hybernia, i.e., a team we lost to the GCoS that we go on to defeat later and put the demons to rest, then we have no problem.

If we make the final and face Mercedini, which is entirely possible, I honestly don't know how things will work out. While Drawkland has the stronger side who's achieved lots of success in the World Cup spheres, Mercedini is a pretty scary team to face. They're all in form, and have been dispatching teams left and right. We've faced them twice in friendlies, drawing 2-2 at home and losing 3-1 away. However, the only team to beat them this tournament is Otakuverse, who we've beat. So by that logic, we have silverware in our future.

Whatever the situation is between Mercedini and Free Republics, it just depends on our face-off against the Alpine Union. God, all of Luminitia, and Margaret willing, we should be on the way to an Independents Cup final. All we have to do is our job. You got this, ladies. On Corps indeed.

Assembly Passes Legislation to Outlaw Killer Drugs, Ban Gun-Free Zones
By: Matthew DeRose

Today, the Federation Assembly passed Senate Bill 707, the Public Safety Restoration Act by unanimous consent. The bill now heads to the desks of Consul Nicholls and Consul Bolton, both of whom are expected to sign it with due haste. The bill is a surprising legislative reaction to the recent Peace & Love High School shooting. Usually, centrist politicians such as those that make up the vast majority of our present government would wait until cooler heads prevailed before considering any kind of action but it appears that the death of 21 students and a teacher has sparked action to ensure that this will be the last mass shooting in our Federation's history.

The Public Safety Restoration Act does two major things. Firstly, it removes the right of private property owners to declare their property a gun-free zone. From now on, it shall be unlawful to prevent or to attempt to prevent any Republican from exercising their Constitutional right to carry guns on any territory subject to the laws of the Federation Government. The CEO of the Republican Rifle Association, Ronald Small, released a statement declaring this to be "a long-overdue common-sense gun reform that will prevent private property owners from endangering the public safety by disarming good guys with guns. As I've said many times, the surest way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun and this legislation ensures that good guys with guns can keep us safe." A few opponents of gun rights protested this provision and were removed from the Assembly Arena after disrupting the proceedings.

Secondly, this legislation prohibits anybody in a position of authority over a minor from encouraging or coercing a minor into consuming any kind of mind-altering substance. This is a controversial provision, which may be unconstitutional according to Constitutional scholars. News Magazine conducted a poll of 100 Constitutional Law professors and 62 of them regarded this provision as unconstitutional, 31 regarded it as constitutional and the rest said its constitutionality was debatable. Dixon Light has already announced plans to challenge the constitutionality of this law, as it is written so broadly that most attorneys believe alcoholic beverages to be included under the law. However, its intent is to prevent the use of certain mind-altering prescription drugs that are supposedly designed to cure depression and make their user happy. Such drugs were commonly prescribed by Peace & Love High School and have been proven to lead to suicidal tendencies.

Matthew DeRose writes about the Federation Government. He is a recent graduate of the University of Republica with bachelors degrees in Journalism and Political Science. During his time in college, he interned with the Republica Post. Although the Post didn't have any openings for him upon his graduation, he had left an impression on their editor, who recommended him to Admiral Theriault.

Admiral Theriault removed a few lines from Matthew DeRose's article and emailed his reporter:

Subject: Changes to your Article

Mr. DeRose,

I have made a few changes to your article. Your original text acknowledged the existence of far-left extremists and gave them a platform. This violates our policy here at News Magazine, which is to no-platform extremists such as those responsible for last year's Leftist Rebellion. I urge you to review our Style Guide and please refrain from printing their fringe arguments in the future. Their hate speech has caused the election of both Kulseth and O'Reilly and last year's rebellion. We cannot afford to permit these groups to find an audience and cause more problems for our nation in the future. While I believe this was an honest mistake, please do not repeat it in the future.

To be clear, the views of anti-gun rights groups should not be discussed in our publication and the existence of such groups should not be acknowledged. You are a talented young reporter and have a great future ahead of you. You should take care to remember that giving attention to fringe groups, even of the purely negative variety, only makes such groups stronger by assisting their recruitment.

Thank you,

Another one goal victory had placed Rule Theriault's young side in the finals of the Independents Cup. This was their first tournament final since their return and was being taken as a sign that the team's shock World Cup qualification last year had not been a fluke. Against South Toronto, the Republicans had fallen behind early on a Michal Bergman goal but Porbergur Lydsson's goal right before half equalized and Lydsson had won the match for the Free Republics just seconds before the hour mark on the rebound after a Love Holm shot hit the crossbar and bounced back to Lydsson, who put it straight into an open net. The game against Tinhampton saw the Republicans take the lead in the 6th minute on a Johnny Smith free kick goal and hold their opposition scoreless. This set up a matchup with Mercedini where the FFR came in as the underdogs.

The story of the Free Republics-Mercedini was the weather, which saw a heavier-than-usual rain that left the surface of the pitch muddy. This produced an ugly 90 minutes of soccer, with poor play from both teams. The Republican goal came in the 82nd minute after Liam Toivonen tripped over the mud in his own defensive area and ended up accidentally hitting the ball into his own net. The referee somehow managed to miss the handball but saw the ball go sailing into Mercedini's net, so he awarded a goal to the Free Republics, sending them through to the finals. After the match, Harbor Hill Stadium's groundscrew immediately went to work repairing the pitch in preparations for the final between the Free Republics and Drawkland.

Republican National Soccer Team, LLC had never faced Drawkland before, but the O'Reilly Organization's "Free Republics National Soccer Team" had defeated Drawkland 2-0 in a Global Cup of Soccer third place match. Such a result, however, did not really count since this was a completely different Republican team, with a completely different coaching staff, a completely different roster and a completely different style of play. For all intents and purposes, this was a first time ever meeting and it was an opportunity for Rule Theriault's team to announce their return to the elite of international soccer by defeating the team ranked 20th in the current KPB rankings. No matter who won, the winner would be the 3rd nation to be crowned Independents Cup champion, joining the reigning World Cup champions and the most recent World Cup runner-up.

This has to be divine intervention. There is no other explanation.

You can't tell me that this is a coincidence. All of our greatest threats to winning this cup simply shrinking away before they come to meet us. Either there's some angelic being blocking crucial shots in certain matches or somebody at DISC is writing a lot of checks. Either way, I don't care. We just need to do what's right. What whatever unseen omnipotent force clearly wants us to do. And that's win the Independents Cup.

vs ALPINE UNION
The match against Otakuverse saw the Kick Corps starting the entire reserve lineup (minus Kazia Savage) for the match. The next round's matchup against East Vormsi featured the reserve center fielders with the starting wingers, for the most part. Logically then, this match against Alpine Union featured the starting center players with reserve wingers. Lana Harmony took up the net for the first time in the knockouts, Sarah Arrowsword got back on the pitch at center mid while Collins and Tracy were on the back wings. Ellzidan also returned to her rightful position at center mid while Cornelius and her domestic teammate Foss played at her sides. Finally, up front, Cross took the CF position with Crawford, Jewel, and Moore on the flanks and behind. Clearly still a star-studded squad at hand.

Now, let's talk about Alpine Union. They're a conglomeration of nations, hence the Union moniker, based out of North Eurasia. One of the nations contained in that union? Great Caledonia and North Hybernia. While they may not exist as a true entity now, they were absolutely our earliest rival. All you have to do it look back at the Global Cup of Soccer. The GCoS was the first tournament Drawkland ever participated in, and funnily enough, it seems to have shades of it in this Independents Cup.

In the first Global Cup of Soccer, Drawkland drew its first two group matches before having a massive 4-6 win to send them to the knockout rounds (their first win at the international stage). 2 more wins, one of them in Extra Time, sent them to the semifinals, where they played Great Caledonia and North Hybernia, who were also on their first international outing. The class was one for the ages, Stella Moore and Katie Madison both scoring in regular time to tie the match, before an uneventful extra time to lead to penalties. The Drawkians tragically lost 3-1 in penalties, Jackie Crawford being the only Corps player to land a kick. Since then, we predictably swore revenge and curses upon them. One day, we'd be back.

That day came sooner rather than later. Merely one cycle later, Drawkland and GCNH entered Baptism of Fire 64. You probably know this story better. Despite playing fantastic ball, the semifinal clash in Mercedini between the Corps and upstarts Amnarei-asud gave Drawkland a loss and relegation to the third place match rather than the grand final of the Baptism. I'm still debating whether we should call that semifinal match "The Letdown at Langtree" or "The Lamentation at Langtree." The latter sounds more biblical and fire-and-brimstone so I'm probably going to start using that more often. Anyway, the chance for redemption was presented in this third place match. Great Caledonia and North Hybernia had perished, well-deserved, in the opposite semifinal, and now the bronze of Baptism of Fire 64 was set to play between these two rivals.

The match unfolded not unlike the GCoS semifinal, with the teams tying early on, GCNH getting to 2 first, and Drawkland coming back later to tie the match at 2. Except this time, instead of waiting all match to let it go to overtime and a depressing losing penalty shootout, they went for it all. Cam Cross got through in the 88th minute to put those demons to rest and finally take down the Caledonias, and went it really mattered too.

That's just a bit of history. Now that nation has been absorbed by the Alpine Union, and most of their team is not present. Only 3 of Alpine Union's team members hailed from Caledonia and Hybernia, and none of them are starters. Not matter which way you swing it, this is a new team. Just another team to beat on the way to a championship. Who cares if they beat Schottia? We're not Schottia. We're Drawkland.

The match really went just like that. Alpine Union fielded a full-strength team against Schottia to further their chances of an upset victory, which totally worked for them. But now they're faced with consequences - most of their star players were now gassed and unprepared to take on the next-best team in the Cup. Two of those non-starter Hybernians were going to be playing against Drawkland. Jennifer O'Byrne, the goalkeeper, and Tearlach MacEachthighearna, the central defender. Together, they'd try their best to stop a repeat of 3+ cycles ago. And they put up a valiant effort.

First blood was claimed by the Alpines. After a solid Drawkian attack, MacEachthighearna managed to get a solid possession on the ball and send it flying deep. It spiraled to the right, and Jean-François Kleineheismann was there to knock the ball down and start it towards the Drawkian goal. Arrowsword was closer to midfield, attempting to draw Kleinehesimann offsides, but Bela Tracy didn't get the memo, and she drew back to defend Kleine. Arrowsword sprinted to try and get a second defender on him but didn't get there in time, as Tracy missed a shot at the dribbled ball and Kleine took the shot quickly before more defenders could arrive. This clearly caught Lana Harmony off guard, and she missed saving the shot by inches as it slid across the line and into the side of the net.

Alpine Union held this lead from the 28th minute on well into the second half. The Kick Corps tried their best, making shot after shot at the goal, but O'Byrne was on her game and took each onslaught in stride. It was clear from Michael Starre's perspective that a change was needed. At halftime, they clearly went over some changes to make to the gameplan. At around the 70th minute, the team switched tactics, the strikers rotating positions on the field to catch the defense off guard. Aurora Jewel and Ellzidan pretty much switched spaces on the field as well, to put the old Elf in a better position to score. And that she did, 73 minutes in, finally putting Drawkland on the board, and the Drawkian crowd in attendance and watching at home at ease. For the time being.

The Corps didn't stop there though. They just kept their foot on the gas, and sent the house again. The defense had time to regroup and wouldn't be making the same mistakes as earlier. The offensive attackers were locked in and ready to go. The Alpines had clearly expected this though, and brought their whole team back to defend. It was a stalemate until the final whistle. It would take Extra Time to decide the second Independents Cup finalist.

It was clear that Drawkland wouldn't be taking this one as lightly as previous extra times. Especially with a better team than Otakuverse to face, and one whose players have been known to best Drawkland through penalty kicks, it was critical for the Corps to take this one once and for all. They resumed the frantic offensive attack, knowing that eventually the Alpines would crack. And that they did, accidentally presenting a lane to Cam Cross, which she quickly took advantage of with a flourish of a kick. She sent it spiraling across the box, curving and fading to just barely edge in the corner of the crossbar to score. The crowd hopped up in elation, the Drawkians in attendance roaring for such a great turn of events.

What seemed like hundreds of minutes of careful defensive playing and time wasting later, Drawkland had done it. They were on to the final.

PREDICTIONS
Here's the weird thing about facing Alpine Union in the semifinals. You know that Drawkland faced Great Caledonia and North Hybernia in the semifinal of their first-ever tournament, but they ultimately failed. They went on to the third place match to face ... Free Republics. In that match, the much more experienced Free Republics easily shot down the Corps 0-2. Hell, Free Republics had been to the World Cup final under 20 years prior. Some of that skill clearly remained, that fantastic pedigree. But now, Drawkland's pedigree far outmatches theirs.

The circumstances now are flipped. Drawkland ended their GCoS campaign with 2 straight losses - and now they've started the end of their Independents Cup campaign with a win. This clearly means that we have to win the last match. I dunno, it feels like some sort of prophesy that must come true, or something. Like we said early, the amount of stuff that has had to go right for this team to make it to this point is astronomical.

Think about this. It all starts with Bonesea withdrawing from the Cup before it began, leaving Drawkland as the second-ranked nation in the tournament. Then you think about the playoff seedings. Otakuverse fluking a win against Mercedini to be a higher seed and Drawkland doing just well enough to face them in the first round rather than one like Mercedini. Or teams like East Vormsi and Karditan performing just well enough to face each other in the playoffs. Drawkland had just enough points to be in the sweet spot. Then consider how Schottia miraculously lost in tragic fashion to a nation as apparently shoddy as the Alpine Union. All the threats to Drawkland seem to shy away. Then consider Mercedini rather shockingly losing to Free Republics in the semis, skirting a chance to face Drawkland which could realistically bend in Mercedini's favor. And finally, in the grand final, Drawkland faces Free Republics, a mediocre World Cup side who qualified for the playoffs in this Cup by virtue of a last-matchday win.

Everything is aligning for a victory. The fruit is ripe, and the ladies of the Corps just need to pick it. Now, as a supposedly unbiased journalist, I'm supposed to not be too braggadocios on these players, but there is simply no reason we shouldn't be able to win this game. Drawkland's Kick Corps and the Free Republics' National Soccer Team LLC, two offensively-minded teams, duking it out for (hopefully) 90 minutes plus change. Our prediction? A 1-3 win for Drawkland. But who can be sure, after all ... Schottia was taken down by a team we beat as convincingly as Otakuverse. Anything can happen in this cup.

Let's just hope the next region atop the Independents Cup heap is Sonnel. Let's hope to see you soon, Tyran and Wide Enness Ocean. In any case, you know what to say.

On Corps.

Harbor Hill Stadium locker room, 19:30 Schottian Time

Postby Drawkland » Sun Feb 25, 2018 1:26 am

Independent Associations Cup 4 - Final

Michael Starre stood at the head of the locker room. He eyed each and every woman in the room. His arms were crossed. Every player was wearing her striking black and red uniform. Some of them, especially the ones in the team for the first time in this tournament, were nearly faint with anxiety. Others were simply a tad more nervous than usual. And of course, there was one who was actually relaxing. This was probably the 87th most important soccer match of her life. But not everyone gets the luxury of playing a sport for millennia.

"Ladies. Today you have an opportunity. You have the chance to prove that you're not just a fluke. We've qualified for 3 cycles - well, 2 cycles. And yet pundits around the multiverse dismiss us. Call us semi-amateurs, like we're some kind of joke. This here can prove to the world, to the multiverse, that we mean business."

The players all nodded at their manager's words. They each took it in, all pondering it in their different ways.

"I don't mean to inflate the importance of anything or get into your heads. But the fact of the matter is that winning this championship could do wonders for you. For this program. For our future. This is all in your hands. Do you want to be great? Then this is where you start."

A voice from one side of the locker room spoke up. "I know we've already gone through all the film and everything, but do you have any last minute words to take with us onto the pitch about the Free Republics?"

"Of course," Starre said then thought for a moment, "Just remember they're not the team you all faced in Felix. Totally players and leadership, ultimately not the one that beat you 7 years ago. Most of those players were still in elementary school when Free Republics defeated us back then. So many of you were so young back then too ... it's a weird feeling to see you all here now. We've matured so much as a team, and all of you as players. Look at me, I'm about to get emotional. Ellzidan, do you have any words?"

"Well, we've gotten this far. We're here on our own bravery, and strength, and each other's backs. Don't let them deceive you or disarm you. If our minds are set then we are already the champions. Let's win."

"You make this sound like we're going to some battle for our lives out there," laughed one of the newer teammates, Kazia Savage. Ellizdan's intense stare at her seemed to imply that that was exactly what they were going to face outside the tunnel.

"Alright now, it looks like we need to head out onto the pitch now. Everyone remember the tune?" Starre said after a moment. The tune he referred to was a short song that Ellzidan taught the team to sing early in its history. "Warrior On," it was called, and they always hummed it before important matches. This was certainly example of such a match.

"We are warriors, like ancient ancestors.

We will fight today, for we shall light the way.

Onward so we move, with victory behooved.

Now's our time to ride, our people we will guide.

Fight now for glory, to write our stories.

We shall prove to them, our virtue has no end.

The sounds of battle nears, a million people's* cheers.

For now the time is nigh, our names be held on high.

By the time the players had finished humming and quietly singing the pseudo-hymn, they'd already exited the locker room and were now approaching the entrance to the pitch from the tunnel. With the crowd roaring and the Drawkians within it jumping around wildly, it was now gametime. The ladies ran onto the pitch as they were announced, to the applause of many excited Drawkians and to begrudging Republicans, Schottians, and other non-Drawkians present.

The ceremony such as anthems seemed to pass as a blur for most of the teams' players. When presenting the pennant to the Republican team captain, Ellzidan also presented him with a special-smithed sword for the occasion (as per her tradition). As with all her ceremonial swords, she only smiths them for major matches such as championships or other such important games.

For the national team, it's a broadsword with every starting players' signatures inscribed on one side of the blade, with the defining words such as "Drawkland - Free Republics - Independents Cup 4 - Harbor Hill Stadium - Handon - Schottia" inscribed on the other. To the manager Rule Theriault she presented a dagger of similar make, yet of course smaller. Only her signature was inscribed on one side and "Drawkland - Free Republics - Independents Cup 4" on the other.

Presently the pleasantries were over with. The Drawkians and Republicans took the field, Drawkland's full-power starting lineup gracing the pitch. Everybody was on the edge of their seats, of those that weren't standing and cheering. The referee let the ball down onto the pitch.

It was time.

The original lyrics have this as "creature's", but this was changed pretty quickly once Ellzidan began singing it about soccer rather than literally battling creatures.

Also sorry for not naming a specific player as your captain FFR, couldn't find a note of who it was on your roster.
