System of Units

Postby Gonddor » Wed Feb 07, 2018 5:02 am

A survey about your nation's system of units of length, weight and pressure. Do you use the imperial, the metric or an own system?

Gondor has the imperial system.

Atlantis officially uses the metric system.
Uses certain NS stats.

Atlantis is an MT nation that is the third richest country in the world, behind only China and the United States. It is closer to the USA, UK, Italy and Spain (in that order, though Italy and Spain is probably tied) culturally than it is Greece. It is also a naval power.

And no, Atlantis is not underwater: It has a land area around the size of France.

Pros: Classical liberalism, democracy, the West, Brexit, Viktor Orban, free education, strong military
Cons: Authoritarianism, fascism, communism, multiculturalism, Islamism

Olthar uses a system much like metric in theory, but we use an octal number system rather than a decimal number system. For convenience.

The Van Hool Islands adopted the imperial system in a 1905 referendum, which set it apart from the rest of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which used the metric system. Before the referendum, the nation used the Dutch metric system, which differed slightly from the system used in other countries. The main draw for de-metrication was the amount of trade that happened with Australia and New Zealand, and it was argued that converting from imperial to metric was hampering trade between the other Oceanic countries and the Islands.

In 1968, the colonial government undertook a campaign to re-metricate the nation, and encouraged citizens to use the metric system in their day to day lives. Road signs were changed to metric, as was item packaging and things like stove ranges and thermostats. These days, there's a slight cultural divide when it comes to metrication. While the Dutch-speaking population have almost entirely metricated, the English-speaking population still hold on to parts of the imperial system. They measure human height in feet and inches, human weight in pounds and ounces, and they also tend to give informal distances in inches, feet, and miles.

Kenmoria is an illiberal yet democratic nation pursuing the goals of communism in a semi-effective fashion. It has a very broad diplomatic presence despite being economically developing, mainly to seek help in recovering from the effect of a recent civil war. Read the factbook here for more information; perhaps, I will eventually finish it.

The metric system is kinda-sorta our unofficial-official system. But we trade with nations all over the world, so we're capable of dealing in any system. Occasionally there are conversion problems but we're used to chaos. If somebody orders ten thousand milligrams of pineapples, it's probably a mistake.

The Empire's official units of measurement are the Imperial Luciellan system. These are not the same as the British Imperial units, and I, the player, am still working them out mathematically. The Britannic System and the Metric System as are with all foreign things, considered to be culturally degrading and thus outlawed.

The metric system is used officially by the government and in international trade, but many different systems are taught in school and they are permitted to use in private matters.
