Time travel

Postby The waii » Tue Jan 23, 2018 2:04 am

If you could go anywhere in time, what past or future civilization would you like to visit?
If it's a past one, say why. If it's a future one, say what that civilization looks like.

I'd go back in time to get a better OP
Topoliani: A Post-Apoc Medieval Nation in the Levant

I don't use NSstats, nor is this nation a representation of my views.
IC Year: 1210 AD.
Undergoing its third retcon. The third time's the charm, right?

I assume that this is a standard time travel thing where you can travel through both space and time and not just time. Anyway, my plan is relatively simple. But a handgun and than take it for a trip to various places in the past. Just randomly, where ever the natives are weak and can be robbed or abused.

Sure, I can't conquer a Mayan city state on my own. But I can materialize inside the temple, shoot the guards and run off with the gold. And equally I can't take over medieval Germany but I can jump to a random village there and have my fun with the helpless peasants for a week or two until they are all dead, I get bored or someone that can fight shows up. That sort of stuff.

Basically look at any of the old spaghetti westerns and like the sort of evil bandit that operates in Mexico. That sort of thing. Only with time travel.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

I'd go forward in time (With protection), and witness the future of humanity. I'd also want to see if Earth was eventually destroyed by the Sun, saved or destroyed in another way, see the end of star formation, and watch as the universe descends into the Dark Ages as matter decays.

Travel to Sumeria three thousand years ago, share all our current knowledge with them, become worshiped as a God, and boosting technological advancement by several thousand years.

Assuming I had a hefty protection detail with modern arms accompanying me at all times, I'd use the time machine quite extensively, travelling to see how various geographic locales have changed throughout the ages.

My interest is mostly geographical - I'd want to see my own homeland just as glaciers were receding from it, the Black Sea and the Persian Gulf before they assumed their present forms, various locales around the world that are now seafloor, basically how the landscape has changed in the past 20 thousand years.

As for exploring human history, I'm quite content staying in the present age with it's availability of vaccines, antibiotics and modern sanitation practices.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

I mean with my luck I would go back in time and catch something, Bri g it forward, and kill of 99.99% of humanity.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

Look at it from my perspective. The OP just gave everyone who walks into this thread, and thus potentially the whole world, the power to screw with space and time. We have about a hour, maybe less before someone does something that screws up reality, creates a paradox or just erases our timeline. And that's assuming that the branch of physics that claims time travel would destroy the universe is wrong. Which is not a given considering that time travel implies causality is not a thing.

Morality flies out the window the moment you announce the end of the world. And frankly that is what we are dealing with here. So make the best of it while you still can. Because it will all be erased from ever having happened soon enough.

That always sounds good, but consider how little you actually know about how technology works. Even "simple" technology.

If I leave you out in the woods, can you make gunpowder? Do you know how to make penicillin? Do you even know what it looks like?

I'd travel back in time of the days of the American revolutionary war with crates of machine guns and ammo to supply Gen. George Washington, can tanks fit through this time portal?

If you go back in time, and want to make technology, shouldn't you take enough supplies to make a ton of stuff, and show the natives how to make all these objects, and have spares?

Well now it will be a quick war, not to mention with the use of our time weaponry being brought back in time, firearm technology will now take a different path in the hopes that by the 21 century, we will have our phasers, laser cannons, blasters, light sabers, etc. It's a win, win.

Also it would end the stupid argument that the 2nd Amendment only meant muskets.

I would save Ancient Greece from being conquered by the Romans, thus advancing civilisation quite considerably, or, I would feel all the advancements of the 20th century to medieval scholars, also boosting global advancement.

I find it more entertaining to look at these scenarios with a more broader scope as I find it produces a far more interesting narrative. And let's face it, that's what these scenarios are for. It's not about sparking an in depth ideological debate about the nature of humanity based off what we'd do but about discussing fun and entertaining things we could do with this power and the strange, entertaining and hilariously catastrophic way it could all go wrong.
