Patiens: the Prison Island. The hellscape to which the all-powerful Dominus Empire sends every convicted criminal from every corner of the Empire. From the slums of the imperial capital to Tepar and Vesende, every criminal finds themselves sent to the prison island. The convicted arrive on ships at one of the many ports on the island, equipped only with what they can carry on their backs, never to see their lands, family, or homes again. Surrounded entirely by the Sea of the Damned there is no way off of Patiens, unless one hopes to swim the many leagues it takes to reach shore. However, even if one does make it off the island, the Dominus Empire controls the entire coastline of the Sea, and any escapees will be hunted and sent back to the isle.
Patiens was once a beautiful place. People lived happy lives on the island and died satisfied with their existence. The Dominus Empire was a weak tribe at this time, and no prisoners were sent to the island to spend the rest of their days there in isolation. Long ago, generations before it became a prison, the vibrant society that thrived on the island crumbled thanks to infighting and disease, with the Sky Village, Solatus, and ruined cities the only remnant of that forgotten time.
Every criminal from the Empire finds themselves torn from their everyday lives and sent to live the rest of their days on Patiens: the violent and the nonviolent. Murderers, political prisoners, Siranists: they all receive the same sentence. Some people band together based on what types of crimes they’ve committed; societies on the island like Enteron and the Forested City have formed as a result of this type of bond. Other people band together with those they were randomly placed on a ship with; the famous Drowned Company, a historical mercenary group that roamed the island protecting the weak, came into existence because of this. Some individuals join factions, traveling groups with various purposes, once they become acquainted with the isle. Factions come in many varieties there are crooks like the Thieve’s Guild; some are exiled ethnic groups like the Khuganate of the Xiunna; some are composed of the worst criminals who enjoy murder and making others suffer, like the Bastard’s Company.
The present moment is a contentious one in the 5,000 year prison history of Patiens. On the island, there are rumors of food shortages. The Empire provides absolutely no goods or food to the people of the island, meaning that everything must be grown there or hunted. Whispers have spread through many factions and societies that the burgeoning population of prisoners may finally be placing too much stress on the environment. This has resulted in violence and anger towards new arrivals, and sometimes shiploads of new prisoners are slaughtered by groups acting out of self-preservation. In the Empire there are fears that the people of Patiens will rise up and take imperial lands, and over the growing number of Siranists on the island and beyond. Attempts like this have taken place in the past, but the population of the island has never been higher than it is now.
Every day new arrivals come to the island; every day for the past several thousand years this has been the case. Some have recently arrived on the island, attacked by a group of Solatists near the Free City of Alsez, and few aboard their ship survived. This is one incident of dozens that have occurred recently on the island. However, you are not a new arrival, you are a citizen of Patiens. How long have you been on the island? Years? Months? Days? Have you shed your criminal ways or do you participate in the violent, lawless culture of the island? Are you a member of some faction, or do you reside in some society? The prisoners on Patiens come from every corner of the Empire,
where are you from and who are you?.

Rules
- Have fun! No one is here to be grumpy or upset, so have a good time to ensure others will too!
- Follow the forum rules. This roleplay may be dark, but don’t go beyond PG-13.
- Refrain from godmodding, meta-gaming, or partaking in any other practice that doesn't belong in a proper roleplay.
- Your character may die, and you will be allowed to create another character if that happens. However, please do not let disputes or issues from the IC thread pour over into this thread. If you have any issues with another player or something that has happened, please let the OP or Co-OP act as a mediator so that your problems can be resolved properly, quickly, and efficiently.
- That being said, OP’s word is final. The same goes for the Co-OP, but they may be overruled by the OP, though I expect to happen rarely if at all. If you have an issue with something the OP or Co-OP has done please talk to them privately and not in the thread. I heard a great quote the other day that sums up how I feel about this: “public confrontation is for rednecks.”
- There is magic in this roleplay, but it is “soft magic.” A very mysterious force that is incredibly difficult to harness. Your characters cannot be all-powerful mages. In fact, magic will hardly be present at the beginning of the roleplay, but will come into play later on.
This is a character roleplay. In the early days of the thread many dedicated individuals created the religions, factions, societies, and imperial territories that you can browse over below. You absolutely do not have to read every single application, but they are all fun to look over and can help you create an even more in-depth character. When this roleplay first opened every character was on the same ship to Patiens. However, now those characters have arrived and we have opened the doors to new people. Now, instead of creating a character on their way to Patiens, you will be creating a character who has been on Patiens for however long you decide. As of my writing this (01/18/18) all of the characters are near the Free City of Alsez, but feel free to have your characters be anywhere. You can make them interact with the factions and societies that have been created no matter where they are on the island.
As usual, please remove parentheses from the applications.
