Alpine Skiing World Tour - OOC/Signup [OPEN for Season 2]

Postby Savojarna » Tue Dec 26, 2017 1:17 pm

After some discussion and interest being shown on the NS Olympics Discussion Thread, I decided to go forward with a new competition before the Olympic Games! The Alpine Skiing World Tour (roughly) follows the format of the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup, and my prospective schedule is to have ca. 10 events, to be finished by the time the Olympics come around, so depending on that timing and how long we take for signups, it'd be roughly 1-2 events per week. The idea is that everyone can sign up as many riders as they like but get limited for how many riders you can sign up per race, and that you collect ranking points for your nation as well as for your individual riders. While scorination is going to be done by me for now (I have a holiday from 7th January until mid-February, so I have plenty of time to manage this), IC hosting can take place at your nation as well! How? See below:

Rider Signup
Deadline: NONE (riders can be signed up at any time during the season)
You can sign up as many riders as you want, which have to be divided into male and female (this should also correspond to the Olympics, so I decided to split it the same way as it is split there). For each rider you enter, you have to post their ratings for speed and technical skill. These can each be a value between 1 and 9, and they need to add up to no more than 10. Speed determines how good your rider is at gliding and managing high speeds. High rates could be reached by classical downhill specialists. Skill determines how well your rider can do turns, stay on their skis and do jumps. High rates of skill are reached by slalom and GS specialists, but some downhillers also reach good skill levels! The signup should contain:
- Your nation name + trigram
- Your male riders + their rating (Speed/Skill)
- Your female riders + their rating (Speed/Skill)
Voluntary: a default start list (see below)

Exampleland (EXA)
Male:
Peter Example (7/3)
Mark Test (5/5)
Kevin Demonstration (2/8)
Female:
Mary Example (9/1)
Alice Demonstration (6/4)
Erica Tryout (2/8)
Default starters
Men DH: Peter Example, Mark Test
Men SG: Peter Example, Mark Test
Men GS: Peter Example, Mark Test, Kevin Demonstration
Men SL: Kevin Demonstration
Men SC: Kevin Demonstration
Women DH: Mary Example, Alice Demonstration
Women SG: Mary Example, Alice Demonstration
Women GS: Alice Demonstration, Erica Tryout
Women SL: Erica Tryout
Women SC: Alice Demonstration

Rider selection
While you can sign up as many riders as you wish, you can only nominate a certain number per race. For an individual race, the following restrictions apply:
    - for each nation: 4 riders
    - for the 10 best nations in the Nation's World Cup Ranking (NWCR): 5 riders
    - for the 4 best nations in the NWCR: 6 riders
You select your riders by either creating a default signup list as in the example signup or by doing a specific selection at the end of your RP/as a single post (if you RP, you are encouraged to add it to your RP post). If you have a default signup list, you can still do a specific one, which will be used instead. If there is no specific selection, the default list will be used. If there is no default list, the first four/five/six riders off your team signup will be used.

Venue signup
Deadline: 7. January 2018

In order to sign up a venue for a race, fill out the following form:
Code: Select all
Nation name:
Town:
Disciplines:
Extra Info

Nation name is your nation's name. For the RL example of the Lauberhornrennen, that would be Switzerland.
Town is the town in which your race is located. For the Lauberhorn, that would be Wengen.
Disciplines are the disciplines that should take place in your event. For the Lauberhorn, that would be a men's DH, SL and SC. Please also add a rating for speed and technicality. Like with the riders, each individual rating needs to be between 1 and 9, and this time they need to add up to 10. For the Super Combined, two separate ratings need to be given for the two runs, as they take place on different runs. For slalom and Giant Slalom, this is not the case as they take part on the same hill. For more info on how to sign up an SC, check the example signup or the discipline list in the spoilers.
You can find a guideline for speed and technicality per discipline below.
Extra info doesn't need to be given, but obviously adds to the RP. It can also be added when describing your race in the IC thread later on.

There is no limit on the amount of venues one nation can bid, and in the interest of realism, I ask you to prefer two or three venues with 2-3 disciplines each over one venue holding all the disciplines.

Nation name: Exampleland
Town: Exampletown
Disciplines: Men's DH (8/2), Men's SG (7/3), Men's SC (8/2; 2/8), Women's DH (8/2), Women's SG (7/3), Women's SC (8/2; 2/8)

    - Downhill (DH): The fastest, longest and most spectacular races. One run down a hill involving sharp turns, steep descents and long jumps; with ratings ranging roughly from 9/1 to 7/3.
    - Super G (SG): Shorter and curvier than a downhill, and with less jumps. However, it is still a speedy discipline and takes only one run. Ratings typically range from 7/3 to 5/5.
    - Giant Slalom (GS): With run times of less than 90 seconds, these events have two runs. Only the top 30 of the first run qualify for the second run, where the start list is the reverse result of the first run. Times are added up for the final result. A typical GS has technical sections with tight turns, but also sections where riders can carve around the gates. Ratings go typically from 5/5 to 3/7.
    - Slalom (SL): The same two-run system as for the GS applies, but the runs are shorter (ca. one minute) and the turns sharper. This is the most technical kind of race, where riders navigate through a "forest" of gates. Ratings go typically from 3/7 to 1/9.
    - Super Combined (SC): One DH and one SL run. For an SC, individual skill ratings for each run need to be given (for example 8/2; 3/7, with the DH listed first). Typically, the Combined does not take part on the most extreme (i.e. 9/1 or 1/9) tracks, but this is not a requirement.

Terminology
As there was a bit of confusion over the terminology in the last season, here is a short recap:

A Race
is a single scorination (for example the Men's Giant Slalom of Kallora, Savojarna; or in real life the Men's Downhill in Wengen). For doing well in a race, you receive ASWT points for the overall standings (both in the respective discipline and in the general standings). Whoever has the most points in a discipline at the end of the season receives a small trophy, whoever has the most points overall receives a big trophy.

An Event can mean two things. IC'ly, it refers to all the races conducted in one place (for example the Kallora Ski Days in Savojarna, which include four races; or in RL the Lauberhornrennen in Wengen, consisting of three different races). OOC'ly, it refers to all the races scorinated on a given day - what we would call a Matchday in other sports. ASWT standings are updated after each OOC event. IC events have no special meaning for the ASWT, but their hosts can decide to give out special prices.

Your Roster (or Team) is the entirety of your signed skiers. It can be as big as you want - a realistic size for a small country with few mountains like Croatia could be three to four riders, whereas bigger nations like Switzerland, Canada or Austria may very well have a roster of 15-20 skiers per gender. Your roster will most likely consist of some specialists for both speed races (Downhill and Super-G), some specialists for the technical disciplines (Giant Slalom and Slalom) and maybe one or two "all-rounders".

Your Delegation are the skiers of your nation who will compete in a specific race. It cannot be bigger than 5 skiers (6 if you are among the Top 5 of the ASWT Nation Ranking). As part of your signup, you can nominate a default delegation for each discipline, but you can change the delegation as often as you want. If your delegation is bigger than allowed (for example because you listed six skiers, but fell out of the Top 5), only the first five/six riders will be used. Realistically, you will mostly use the five/six skiers best suited to the race, but sometimes you may wanna use a different skier if they are in contention for the general standings and may reasonably pick up some points.

Bonus, scorination and carry-over

Scorination will happen once a week (not twice every week like in ASWT 1). For every scorination, there will be a skill modifier based on how well your rider fits the slope of the race. Additionally, there will be a bonus which amounts to 60%, administered on country basis. This bonus is divided into a RP bonus and a ranking bonus, each making up equal parts of the bonus. RP bonus will be decaying over the course of the Tour, so the key to winning is to RP consistently. The ranking bonus is attributed based on the ASWT Nation Ranking, with the teams getting a bonus based on the amounts of points they have. For the first race, the bonuses of the end of ASWT 1 will carry over to 50%, but will be deleted following completion of the first event.

Azadeshia and Northwest Kalactin are signed.
Sjovenia, you can only give your riders one pair of ratings for all disciplines, not different ratings for the different disciplines. Please correct that, otherwise your signups are fine!

Extra Info Located 1 hour north of Stevenson, Gagnon Mountain (pop. 11,490) is Dunnes largest skiing resort, featuring 37 lifts, and over 150 runs, in addition to a sizable Nordic skiing center. The summit of the mountain tops out at 11,020 feet, but only the DH portions of the super combined will start that high. The DH course features narrower sections in the middle third of the race which should show the skiers down and make it technical for a downhill course. The SG and GS courses both feature steep drops and the famous tornado turn, and off camber turn into a small jump. Gagnon Mountain also hosted the mountain bike portion of the World Cycling Championships, and with an ambitious town government, Gagnon Mountain will be a staple in bidding for international competition to come. The nearest major city is Stevenson (pop. 700,069), which has a major airport.

Mt Murray (ele. 12,900 ft.) features beautiful views and ski runs through thick alpine forest. All of the courses feature sharp quick turns, and require a steel nerve to ski though the places where there is little cushioning between the track and the forest. Sitting above the Heg Valley, Murrayville (pop. 9,892) is the resort town of Mt. Murray and about 80 mins from Deschutes (pop. 490,030), where athletes will fly into.

All signups until here are okay and seen, except for Azadeshia's venue signup, which needs a specification if you want to hold these races for men, women or both.

As a general note: In the interest of realism, I advise you to not apply for all disciplines at one venue. I realise now I forgot to say this in the OP (it will be edited in a second) but you can sign up as many venues as you like, even though I won't guarantee we use all of them. If you wish to hold all disciplines in your nation, which is by no means discouraged, consider splitting them up on several venues. In real life, many countries have one or two classic venues for speed and one or two for the technical disciplines (for example Switzerland, which holds DH, SL and SC in Wengen and GS/SL in Adelboden, both classics in their own right; or Italy with DH/SG in Val Gardena and Bormio, and GS/SL in Alta Badia and Madonna di Campiglio). This also makes for more interesting roleplay, as you can show off more of your nation!

Sjovenia is good!
Azadeshia, you're good except for another mistake I didn't put in the OP first (I was pretty tired when I wrote it, my dearest apologies!): Super Combined needs two skill ratings, one for the SC downhill and one for the SC slalom. I thought I had put it into the OP but in fact seem to have accidentally deleted that part. The example signup has been amended to show a correct SC signup as well now, if you need guidance (also, Dunnes has done it correctly for more examples).

I presume you mean your slalom to be 3/7? 7/3 would be an... interesting slalom ^^ You're also good to go with that now :)

Savojarna's venue bids

Nation: Savojarna
Town: Kallora
Disciplines: Men's GS (4/6), Men's SL(2/8), Women's GS (4/6), Women's SL (1/9)
IC info: Kallora is located in Northern Sumanen, and houses two of the most traditional hills for alpine skiing in Savojarna. Both giant slaloms are contested on Kalloraja, the main hill around this mountain town. Kalloraja has a flat section in the middle, making gliding capabilities extremely important, before dropping into a very steep final descent. The men's slalom is also contested on Kalloraja, with a slightly different track. The women's slalom is traditionally contested on the second adjacent hill, Terkeraja. It is short, but difficult due to its location in a forest and the ensuing difficulties with light and shadow and its very uniform steepness.

Nation: Savojarna
Town: Uppviken
Disciplines: Men's DH (7/3), Men's SG (5/5), Men's SC (7/3; 2/8)
IC info: Uppviken is Ejana's second-biggest mountain, overseeing a steep coastline next to it. Uppviken is known for its difficult terrain and spectacular view, as well as the typically freezing cold in the North of Ejana. Sunlight is rare up here, and the wind can play a major role as well. Due to the rather short length and the bad conditions, technical skill is more important than at most other tracks.

Nation: Savojarna
Town: Grafjordur
Disciplines: Women's DH (9/1), Women's SG (7/3), Women's SL (2/8)
IC info: Located in a harbour town north of Jarnstad on Vestrholm, Grafjordur is a long downhill slope with many jumps and a few long gliding passages. This is a track for speed specialists. The slalom is located on the final descent of Grafjordur's slope, a steep and technical part.

Nation: Savojarna
Town: Bergheim
Disciplines: Men's DH (8/2), Men's SG (6/4), Men's GS (3/7), Men's SL (1/9), Men's SC (8/2; 2/8), Women's DH (9/1), Women's SG (6/4), Women's GS (4/6), Women's SL (2/8), Women's SC (7/3; 2/8), Nations Event (2/8)
IC info: Bergheim is the town for the World Tour Finals, contested only between the best riders of each discipline. It is Savojarna's biggest skiing and winter sports resort, contesting the Tour Finals on three different mountains that surround the town located at the end of a valley.

More info for all courses will come with them in RP!

Here is a short announcement (OP has been updated accordingly) from the hosting front:

The schedule will start on Wednesday, 10.1.2018. Races will take place every Wednesday and Saturday, with the exception of Saturday, 27. 1. 2018, because I have to go to Dublin on that weekend and won't have my laptop with me. This one day, cutoff will either be on the 28. or the 29., and you'll get informed early enough. The end of the season will be on the 17. 2. 2018, the start date of the Olympics, and the Wednesday before is going to be kept open as a reserve date.

Signups for venues stay open until 7. 1. 2018, while rider signups stay open throughout the season. Riders from established nations joining during the seasons will not have any disadvantages, while new nations of course will be slightly disadvantaged by not receiving bonus for RP or past results, but face no explicit penalties either, so this remains open! An IC thread will be opened soon, and the link be posted here.
