YN's Holidays and Calendar

Postby Kliia » Fri Dec 22, 2017 8:54 pm

What calendar does your country use? What nation or national religion-specific holidays does your country celebrate?

Our country actually doesn't celebrate any other holidays other than those relating to the Church of Cliklii (aka Kliism) and/or the country itself.
First, allow me to educate you on our calendar.
We do use the standard Gregorian calendar on the forums to make it easier to communicate dates to people, but we have a far different calendar.
First of all, we only have four months. Each month is equal to three months on the Gregorian calendar. When we list them, though, it's not exactly in the same order as Gregorian calendar, and the day and year are listed as Roman numerals. Here are our months and their Gregorian counter parts:
Satus-Puncto (July, August, September)
Libertatem (October, November, December)
Congelationis (January, February, March)
Finis-Puncto (April, May, June)

As for years, year 1 is the year we started being a country. Our independence day was December 22, 1802, but we didn't start our own calendar until July 1, 1803, which is why our years start there.
With that, let's list the holidays!

Kliian New Year's Day- Satus-Puncto I/July 1
Obviously, this is our New Year's Day. Self-explanatory.
Kliians tend to celebrate this holiday with large feasts of deer meat and yams.
Also, the government holds a country-wide election (the only Kliian election held ever) which criminal that citizens want to be executed. Whichever criminal "wins" is killed in the middle of the capital, Clinatia.

Battle of the Castle- Satus-Puncto XXXIX/August 8
This holiday celebrates the event in the Kliian Bible where Cliklii; his son, Calahus; and their army were fighting against the evil god, Bali, whilst Bali was in his castle, hiding. The Kliian and Balian armies fought valiantly against each other in the heavens until Cliklii was eventually victorious. Cliklii's army tore down the castle, but Bali escaped before he could be captured. Bali's wife Yuikil, however, was captured and killed.
A popular Kliian profession is farmer, with the most valuable animal being the horse. This holiday is taking the apparent love interest of the strongest male horse, slaughtering it, and eating it.

Battle of the Cloud Fortress- Libertatum XXIV/October 24
A couple months after Bali's defeat at his castle, Bali had just finished constructing a brand new castle out of a special type of cloud that could not be broken. He called it the Cloud Fortress. He regathered his troops and prepared again for an invasion from Cliklii. However prepared Bali thought he was, Cliklii wound up winning, Bali was captured and killed, and the Church of Cliklii had won.
Fittingly enough in comparison to the previous holiday, this is usually celebrated by taking the strongest male horse, killing it, and eating it.

Independence Day- Liberatum LXXXIII/December 22
For months, there had been a ton of tension between Kliians and Balians. Balians were followers of the god, Bali, and they had been around for a very long time. The Kliian religion had been somewhat prominent in Balianica, the land of the Balians, and it exploded when the Kliian Bible was published on October 24, which was also said to be the day that Bali died. The Balians were upset, calling Kliism a heresy, and the Kliians were no less angry. Eventually, the Kliians took the province that they had been granted by the Balian government and they split from Balianica on December 22, 1802.
Independence Day also celebrates what happened exactly one year later, as on December 22, 1803, after a six month war with Balianica (two months on the Kliian calendar), Kliia won and took all of Balianica's land. Kliia also converted all of Balianica's people, and any who did not convert were executed. The capital of Kliia was moved from Breshus to Clinatia

Clik-Cember Day- Liberatum LXXXIX/December 28
Six days after Kliia won the war against Balianica, Cliklii appeared to a man named Westus Lixum, telling him that he was pleased with what Kliia had done. Cliklii gifted him with a golden goblet and a golden tray, both of very large size. These are stored in the Pontrius Castle in Clinatia (originally the King Castle), and every year on Clik-Cember Day, great feasts of mutton, turkey, ham, and other high quality foods, as well as the highest quality wines in the world, are served to the Kliian Parliament and Pontrius with this tray and goblet.

The Micronation of Concordia uses the gregorian calendar

Our holidays align mainly with american holidays, however there are a few holidays unique to Concordia

March 20: Rebirth Day - The day of the march equinox is an important day of bonding for those of the Concordian faith. It is spent outside, where there is singing, dancing, and general merriment. That traditionally goes from noon til 3, which is when we gather with the people we hold dearest and share what we treasure about them. Then, people make and share with people special handmade gifts, and the festivities die out after that.

June 20: Midsummer Festival - This day, taking place on the summer solstice, is an important one to those of the Concordian faith. People begin festivities near nightfall, by attending a special gathering where Concordian priests share stories of hope with everyone. Then, everyone writes things they are worried about onto pieces of paper. At dusk, these slips are tossed into a fire, symbolizing the removal of worries and fears. The night ends with a toast to hope and prosperity.

September 22: Respite Day - This day, taking place on the autumn equinox, is a day of reflection. People prepare beforehand by making personalized sky lanterns. On that night, we take turns sharing with each other what we've learned, either about ourselves, each other, or just about the world. We then make a wish as we release the sky lanterns, letting them float into the sky. We end the night with a bonfire and dancing.

December 21: Midwinter's Day - The day of the winter solstice is a day where one's devotion is tested, but also one of joy. From dawn til dusk, people go on a fast, not allowing themselves to eat anything so long as the sun is up. When dusk falls, a bonfire is made and people then gather around it to dance and sing. Then, a communal feast is held, where everyone eats and talks about their experiences throughout the year.

Officially, the Gregorian calendar is used, but many rural areas choose to use the Chinese calendar instead, of which the year is currently 4713, the date generally agreed upon, although the general usage of the calendar is split (OOC: according to Wikipedia, anyway)

De jure, the only official holiday to be celebrated is Independence Day, shared in tandem with Toin, December 6th, even though Motra itself is not fully independent but rather a puppet state (OOC: in control of the user of Toin as well).

De facto, most Christian and Jewish holidays are celebrated, as well as Independence Day. Rural areas only tend to celebrate Independence Day, due to the confliction of the two calendars, even though celebrating Independence Day itself is a chore.

We use the Gregorian Calendar.

1st January-New Year's Day.
As nearly everyone has been up all night and/or got drunk last night and can't drive, it's a holiday, nicknamed Hangover Day by many. Many people just sleep the day away.

31st March-Easter
A time to feast on chocolate eggs. Many nickname it Dentist's Day.

July 8th

The Royal birthday of Queen Yocasta II, with military parades by day and fireworks at night that make it sound as if the country is being shelled. Nicknamed Cracker Night by many.

October 31st

Halloween known by many as Zombie Night, and for the past few years there have been large scale zombie attacks on this night. Normal laws against shooting in towns and cities are dropped for this night so the population can help the police and army deal with the zombie pest.

December 24th

Christmas Eve, nicknamed Santa Night by most Vallermoorians. A time of small feasts and buying gifts by day and Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas, delivers the gifts by night.

December 25th

Christmas Day, nicknamed Present Day or Turkey Day by most Vallermoorians. A time of gift giving, feasting and general fun. Even prisoners get nice food on this day. The most popular holiday of the year.

December 26th

Boxing Day, nicknamed 2nd Christmas by many Vallermoorians. A time to eat leftovers and enjoy gifts.

December 31st New Year's Eve, also nicknamed 2nd Cracker Night, Drunkards Night, Jump Night and by a few, Gallows Night because of drink drivers who end up getting executed if they kill or permanently paralyse anyone through drunk driving.

Gandoor uses the Gregorian calendar and our holiday system contains ten named holidays and ten generic public holidays. With the exception of Revolution Day, which was only created earlier this year, all of the current holidays were created following the passage of the Public Holidays Law 1960.

1 January: New Year's Day - Celebrates the New Year

17 February: Public Holiday

3 March: Flag Day - Celebrates the meaning behind the Gandoorese flag. Date chosen to commemorate the adoption of the then-current Gandoorese flag on 3 March 1952

13 April: Public Holiday

22 April: Earth Day - Celebrates the environment and nature

1 May: Labour Day - Celebrates and commemorates labourers and the working class.

10 May: Public Holiday

5 June: Discovery Day - Celebrates the establishment of the Gandoor Grand Council, the first unified government called Gandoor in 1587.

19 June: Children's Day - Celebrates children and their well-being.

28 July: Revolution Day - Commemorates the start of the Gandoor Revolution on 28 July 1900 and all who have given their lives for Gandoor in her history. (Note - Revolution Day was only formally created in November of this year [2022] and has not yet been observed in Gandoor. It was created to serve as a replacement for Remembrance Day)

6 August: Family Day - Celebrates families in Gandoor

9 August: Public Holiday

9 September: Public Holiday (Note - 9 September was formerly Remembrance Day until the creation of Revolution Day)

15 September: Public Holiday

12 October: Founding Day - Celebrates the ratification of the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Gandoor on 12 October 1904 and the establishment of the modern Democratic Republic

31 October: Public Holiday

5 November: Public Holiday

2 December: Indigenous People's Day - Celebrates and commemorates the native peoples of Gandoor and their contributions to our culture and society

25 December: Public Holiday (Note - as the Gandoorese government cannot formally recognize Christmas, due to strict separation of church and state, having 25 December as a public holiday serves as a way to unofficially get around that restriction in order to allow workers to spend time with their families during the holiday, as all workers receive the ten public holidays plus Labour Day off by law)

31 December: Public Holiday

See Cyclis Mundi for a detailed explanation of Ermarianese time-keeping.

To summarize: The year is divided in eight months of thirty-five days, each of which is about 12.5% longer than Earth's. The year begins on the first of Evermoon, roughly half a month after winter solstice. All four points of the tropical year lie in the middle of a month:

- Evermoon
- Remembrance (vernal equinox)
- Suncome
- Radiane (summer solstice)
- Empire
- Leafloss (autumnal equinox)
- Icefall
- Frost (winter solstice)

All RW UK public holidays (and the same calendar), plus Pride Day on the 14th of June (first recognised 1980; the date of the Tinhampton Megaparade, and the 1976 release of Equality of Choice, Not Thought) and Baptism Day on the 8th of October (first recognised 1929; don't laugh, we were "baptised" as a city on that date).

The last Friday of March (i.e. Election Day) is always a public holiday, except when it is also Good Friday (in which case... well, it's a public holiday).

HANDBOOK FOR FOREIGNERS ON GREAT NORTEND

Great Nortend uses the Gregorian calendar as promulgated by Pope Gregory. However, the year is deemed to be calculated from April the 1st to March the 31st. That is, the year culturally begins on Lady Day which is not on the 25th of March as in other countries. However, numerical dates such as 1999, 2018 or the such are still reckoned from the 1st of January. AD, or Anno Domini, is used to represent years from the 1st of January. AC, or Ante Christum, is used instead of BC and is reckoned similarly.

In Great Nortend are are four types of holiday, being common law holidays, full holidays, bank holidays and half-holidays.

Common law holidays are holidays by custom and are Christmas Day (25th of December) and Good Friday (as determined by Easter). All commercial businesses are required to close on these two holidays and labour or work is forbidden outside of the house excepting reasonable expectations of a public duty. Both common law holidays are also compulsory service days and every person in a parish excepting those who are Jewish must make a 'reasonable' effort to attend a Christian religious mass on those days.

Full holidays are enshrined in law in the Holy and Especial Days Act 1999, which superceded the 1893 act of the same name. Full holidays relieve workers of their requirement to work, except those workers in exempted occupations. It does not, however, proscribe working, however double pay is usually expected. The full holidays are, in no particular order: All Saints' Day, All Soul's Day, King's Birthday, St Edmund's Day (Nortend and Cardoby only), St Christopher's Day (Hambria only), Whimtould (Govia only) and Holy Saturday.

Bank holidays are holidays that de jure only require banks to close and are announced every year by Royal Proclamation. The closing of banks, and the de facto closure of government buildings (except the Post Office), courts and schools mean that most commercial businesses also choose to close on most of these days by not all. Bank holidays are governed by the Bank Holidays Act 1956 and are: Lady Day, Whit Monday, Easter Monday, Easter Tuesday and St Stephen's Day (Boxing Day).

Half-holidays are holidays given on certain holy days that give workers the right to attend church before going to work and are determined by Royal Proclamation. Half-holidays are also announced every year by Royal Proclamation and currently include Michaelmas, Candlemas, Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday, Maundy Thursday, St Edmund's Day, St Christopher's Day, St George's Day, St James's Day, St Peter and Paul's Day, the Epiphany, the Assumption and the Feast of the Ascension.

Holidays that fall on Sunday are not replaced by one on a Monday or Saturday. Saturday is a shorter working day, ending at 3 pm instead of 6 pm. Great Nortend has in total, if all holidays are counted and half holidays counted as half a holiday, seventeen holidays in a year.

Although several ancient Celtic calendars are commonplace for religious or stylistic reasons, the official calendar used is the Gregorian.

We have a total of 12 bank holidays in a year - that is national holidays which employers are required to give as time off.
These bank holidays are based on traditional celebrations held around important phases in the sun's procession across the sky - the Solstices and Equinoxes. Since the solstices are traditionally festivals, multiple bank holidays are observed for these, allowing for the full spread of celebrations.
If bank holidays fall on a weekend, then they are shifted to the nearest weekday (for example the Autumnal Equinox in 2018 falls on a Saturday, so the bank holiday will be observed on Friday 21st)

1st of January - New Year's Day
20th of March - Vernal Equinox
21st of June - Summer Solstice (+1 day before and after, total 3 day holiday)
1st of August - Summer Bank Holiday
22nd of September - Autumnal Equinox
21st of December - Winter Solstice (+2 days before and after, total 5 day holiday)

Because our Solstice Festivals are 3 and 5 days in length, if any of the days fall on weekends, they are shifted to the following week. For example, the dates of the Winter Solstice in 2018 are from Wednesday 19th to Sunday 23rd - the two bank holidays which fall on the weekend are thus moved to the Monday and Tuesday.

To summarize: The year is divided in eight months of thirty-five days, each of which is about 12.5% longer than Earth's. The year begins on the first of Evermoon, roughly half a month after winter solstice. All four points of the tropical year lie in the middle of a month:

Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

Like above, but minus the 3 national days. Instead we have Empress Day, which is currently October 21 (the birthday of Mariana I). Abrahamic holy days (Christmas, Chanukah, Ramadan, etc.) are not recognized as public holidays, and businesses do not have to give days off.

Radiatia uses what's referred to as the "Noctur Calendar" which is the same as the Gregorian Calendar in terms of months and days, but differs in terms of years. (The current year in the Noctur calendar is at time of writing 4066 NC.) IC information on the Noctur Calendar can be found here, but the OOC reason for use is it allows a floating timeline to be used - I can skip years faster while remaining in the official "present day".

Below is a list of federal public holidays. Various states may have additional holidays.

Date:Official Name:Details:
January 1stNew Year's DayCelebrates the beginning of the new year according to the Noctur Calendar, as well as the Aquilan Calendar and Gregorian Calendar. Sometimes colloquially referred to by Radiatians as "hangover day" due to the tradition of heavy alcohol consumption the night before.
February 7th - 14th (floating)Traiyan Silviu DayCelebrated on the first Monday in this period to honour Traiyan Silviu, the founding father and first President of the Radiatian Federation, whose birthday was on February 7th.
April 13thVictims of Communism Memorial DayHeld on the anniversary of the April 13th Black Friday massacre, when the Radiatian People's Liberation Army opened fire on a group of pro-democracy protesters in Exegrad, killing approximately 1000. The day also commemorates the approximately 10 million people killed in communist-era purges. Flags are flown at half-mast on this day.
May 28th - June 4th (floating)Capitalism DayCelebrated on the first Monday in this period. Was known as "Workers Day" during the communist era, but was changed to Capitalism Day by the Radiatian Federal Parliament "as a joke" after the fall of communism and never changed back. Many Radiatians consider this to mark the unofficial beginning of summer.
September 15thFederation DayKnown in some states as "Constitution Day", and formerly as "Union Day". Marks the signing of the second constitution of the Radiatian Federation (although this was replaced by the third and current constitution 15 years later) and coincidentally marks the date that the "Original Seven Republics" united to form the short-lived "Radiatian Union" over a century ago.
October 1stAnniversary of the Fall of the Radiatian People's Socialist UnionUsually referred to as just "The First of October" and occasionally as "Radiatia Day". Celebrates the anniversary of the collapse of the communist regime and founding of the modern, democratic Radiatian Federation.
December 6th - December 12th (floating)Victory WeekendHeld on the first Friday in this period and is actually an amalgamation of three former holidays into one - "Democracy Day" on December 6th celebrated the anniversary first free and fair elections in Radiatian history, "Veteran's Day" on December 7th was a commemoration of Radiatian war veterans during the communist era and "Victory Day" on December 9th commemorates Radiatia's victory over Rivenka during the Isthmus War. As there is a good chance that the holiday will land on one of the three days, it is usually referred to as "Victory Weekend" and is generally considered to be a time to honour the military.
December 31stNew Year's EveCelebrates the end of the year, although trading doesn't usually cease on this day. However a peculiar thing about this holiday is that it is illegal for any federal or state authority to charge excise or sales tax on liquor on this day, which makes liquor cheaper and encourages heavy drinking on the final night of the year. Many states also temporarily lift restrictions on sales of alcohol to minors on this day, if they have age limits in place.

BuDa normally uses the Edorian calendar, because it is located inside Edore. These are the holidays/festivals of the Edorian calendar. Stats are represented in Gregorian date.

January (Jarstradžja)
5 - Hanzai Festival. This festival celebrates the "birth" of the mythological goddess Hanzai, also known as Hanazai. All schools (except colleges and national universities), most shops, and some resorts are suspended from Jarstradžja 5-7 to "make Hanzai happy".
40 - Christmas. Edore normally celebrates Christmas Day in Jarstradžja 40. Because a minority of Edore's population is Christian (only 2% or 167,859,000), it is only celebrated in small Christian communities and other religions that are Abrahamic.

February (Dasdgasyn)
22 - Creation Day. BuDa was created in Dasdgasyn 22, 1984 EY1 as a very small community. It is just like the Hanzai Festival.

May
17 - Williarde Olibhara Kaino Day. The holiday primarily celebrates the birth of the WOK dynasty, the longest dynasty in Edore (37 (XXXVII)). It just follows the pale old same No Activity holiday format.

Notes
1. 1984 is not an advanced year in the Edorian calendar. Back in the '1980s of Edore, everything was primitive and like a tribe.
