Handwriting of NationStates

Postby Dytarma » Sat Dec 16, 2017 7:32 pm

I've had this question recently about whether or not location learning to write in a certain place affects how you write (angle, shade, etc...) since I right far differently from my peers. Most of my friends write in a basic print form, while I write in an italicized cursive, yet retaining some elements of print (such as "s" not being a cursive "s", it is just slanted). I've written a sample sentence, Hello people of Nationstates! to show you all my writing, and it'd be awesome to see other's writing as well!

So I have one question to ask you. Does a location affect your writing?

I mean, I'd assume so, but don't know for certain. It'd make sense that it'd have an amount of impact on it, the education you receive based on your location, educational system, or educator. There's a copious supply of factors that influence handwriting, however, location is far from the only one; rather in the midst of it. I for example, have awful handwriting, but my hand-eye coordination in general isn't that good. There are probably many reasons for that, I don't try and speculate on the matter too much, because I don't have any knowledge in the matter, but I'm sure you'll find someone that can answer your question.

I've always had kind of a messy handwriting, ranging from "totally illegible" to "legible, but odd-looking". It's gotten neater, and much smaller, since I started actually working on it a couple years ago. I may edit this later on to include my handwriting in Hebrew.

As for OP's question, I'm sure that location has some kind of effect on handwriting. What that effect is, I'm not sure, but environment affects basically everything, right?

I’ve been told my handwriting has not changed since 4th grade (that’s about nine years old for you non-Americans here), and I don’t think I can really deny that. My handwriting isn’t all that sophisticated, but I’m fairly sure it’s at least legible. I might provide a sample later.

As for OP’s question, location absolutely affects handwriting. Stuff like uneven light or movement can really change or impede your writing, and I’m pretty sure that goes for everyone.

I write pretty fast and I can't write cursive, so my handwriting has become a disastrous mix of print and weird, semi-cursive.

This only gets worse if I'm in something moving (Bus, car, etc...) or am without a solid surface.

It all depends on my mood. Whether I print or use cursive is up to context, time, and my mood.

Most of the time, I favor cursive because it's more elegant.

Top is print, bottom is cursive.

I don't believe that contrived samples are able to truly indicate the way that someone writes. As a consequence I have grabbed a bunch of scanned handwritten pieces from this year (mostly from exams) and two older examples (one from last year, one from late 2014; both also exams). I have chosen pieces that I think are interesting, useful or convenient.

Pay particular attention to g's and y's, es, b's, of, if, d (those last three things all tend to be exactly the same)

Late 2014 Example

Mid 2016 Exam Example

Early 2017 Exam Example (I was running out of time when this section was written)

Image

Mid 2017 Exam Example 1

Image

Mid 2017 Exam Example 2

Late 2017 Exam Example (I was tired and pushed for time in this exam)

Image

Mid 2017 Non-Exam Example (Written on Train; a few months after the above example)

Image

Late 2017 Non Exam Example (Written in Lecture Theatre)

tl;dr -- My handwriting is generally consistent regardless of location, time of day or scenario. If I need to write faster I will slant (not depicted) and if I am quite tired or lazy it is messier.

The surface of the platform in which you write on, the environmental conditions that may affect the speed of your writing, I say that it does.

Yet again, my handwriting is always sloppy no matter where I am :p

Ahh, I actually thought of starting such thread, but you beat me to it! :P

Anyway, hmm... maybe geographical, and the nature of your education. For Myanmar, I'm not sure if they still do it now, but back in my not-so-distant days of early 2000s, we literally have handwriting practices until 1st grade. If your teacher doesn't like your handwriting, you get a wooden ruler to your palm (and those really hurt, trust me).

Here's mine! I simply wrote a few Wikipedia articles as a sample. I prefer pen and paper, but for most parts, for the sake of convenience, I wrote on my Surface 3.

Another one, but it's Math (which I'm mostly doing now), and disclaimer that this is not me asking help with my homework. It was already long-due, and I knew how to do it anyway. :P

All jokes aside, my handwriting is terrible (mostly because I write really fast-The top example was written just now for the thread, which can serve as an example of my handwriting if I were to write something down for someone else. The second is from one of my journals (I make shit tons of notes for RP purposes, including characters, plot points/plans, and lore, to the point that I've got 5 of these really thick 5-subject journals filled up within a couple years, mostly from two or three RPs); It's a rough draft of the deck plans for the Ockham's Razor, a space ship that appeared in the second Ancient Ones RP (click it for a larger view).

tl;dr my handwriting sucks and I draw 8's really weird.

As for if my handwriting differs depending on location, it doesn't. But what I think the question really was, is handwriting regional, like accents are in spoken language-i.e., are there specific things in one's handwriting that they share with others of their location, that are specific to that location? I've got no clue on that one, but I wouldn't be surprised. I'm from Pennsylvania, for what that's worth (in case anyone else in PA writes eights like that ;) ).
