It is 2017 in Azenyanistan. A week has passed after the attempted coup by the Azen Air Force. Neighboring nations under Remnant influence and Pakiranistani and Cemeralian assistance are feeling the price of chaos. And ethnic groups in Azenyanistan, a myriad of them,
are beginning to call for change. Change in the most consequential way as dreamed by the Sarns, Lishs and Ystir, the three ethnic groups that reside by the Azens as majorities unlike the rest. Now, with their leader freed from jail and with them, it is time for them to seize the chance.
Will you dare to keep the Azen world alive? Or will you dare to bring it down for the various ethnicities wishing to be free? Or will you do something else?

Introduction

"Our time to end has come." Whispered Dune. Beside her, her President quietly nodded and looked at the mountains. They were now in the safety of North-Eastern Azenyanistan. Once they were flown to Fallhook, a relatively unknown town of Sarns and Lishs, nobody would ever know or would want to know where they went. Only the Azens would. And soon their time would come.

Simitira took her turn and spoke like this,

"It has been a lifetime of war, Dune. That and strife. Our country cannot take anymore and...and you know that this would be the best thing to ever happen to us. A permanent partition...an end to our country. Everything will be passed to the ones who wish to remove us, to those who wish to replace us."

Dune just nodded. She absently looked at her hands and then at the sky. From the rooftop they were sitting upon, it made her feel a little relieved to see the same stars by the same moon looking down at them. She wondered if they could do more for her. Then she looked down and said shamefully

"By abandoning our people...Simitira, you know this to be cowardly."

"And all the more sinful." She added. The both of them laughed quite painfully. They adjusted so that their arms touched the other, the two sharing the same large, brown blanket that Dune brought because it was cold. Dune finally said,

"As long as the fall is as peaceful as it can be, as long as it happens quickly, then so be it."

Name:Jane Formosa, Captain, VRF 7th Corps.

Sex: Female

Age: Late 30s

Equipment/Belongings: Military Equipment. Few personal belongings.

Purpose: To follow her orders, as best she can. She is acutely aware of the vulnerability of her position, and the inadequacies of the resources at her disposal.

Allegiance: Jane is a soldier, and so her principal allegiance is to her nation. She has some sort of ties to the Foreign Ministry (like many VRF commanders).

Short Backstory: Jane was born to a lower-middle class family. Of half-migrant stock, Jane had to deal with an undercurrent of discrimination. Jane overcame this and more — her family supported her where they could, and she developed strong competencies and an simply ‘can do’ attitude. Worse was the sexism in the armed forces. The only women who got promoted were hard as nails like Malian. Jane partially modelled herself on that, and created a strong focus on the job, and outdoing everyone around her. This left little time for family arrangements, but the results were finally starting to show in her career.

Short Backstory: Of poor and unpolished background, Leslie has Varanski blood and grew up in an declined industrial town near Varhaven. A lot of her family is on welfare, and education was only mediocre. Like for much of the region, joining the military is seen as a way out; there is also a strong national pride, which is closely tied to the armed forces. Leslie shared those views, but she never thought too hard about her career. She displayed an aptitude as a soldier, but she never advanced high in the ranks. Her superiors put it down to some character flaws that Leslie never cared to iron out (though doubtless discrimination played a part too). Leslie chafes at the low rank, but she’s also fine with her current role.

Name: Siastan Varkalen, General VRF 7th Corps.

Sex: Male

Age: Early-30s

Equipment/Belongings: Military Gear; Symbols of his rank. A rifle, and a pistol.

Purpose: As he sees it, to clean up whatever mess he finds in Azenyanistan. In this regard, his aims go above military/security related matters. Siastan is not unambitious either; more precisely he is aware that his operation is in the glare of the Valaran public, and there is potential for both reward or sharp failure in his actions here.

Allegiance: To his sister, above all else. Firm loyalty to the Empire, its elected government, and the VRF (in that order). Has in the past shown affiliation with the Liberal and Social Democratic Parties (some hint at opposition to the Conservatives; this has yet to be confirmed). He also has a strong personal morality; this could be said to be an allegiance. He has a mixed relationship with the Foreign Ministry.

Short Backstory: Hailing from a coastal town near Aurelia, Varkalen was not born into wealth or influence. Indeed his family was hardworking and ordinary. Instead they instilled Siasten and his sister Clara with a strong personal morality, and a belief that they could succeed. These twin factors drove Siastan through much of his schooling. Studying exceptionally hard, he was awarded a place in the Castra Novum Officer’s Academy. This catapulted him (after graduating) straight into the Middle-Ranks of the VRF, where he came under the wing of General Malian. Recognising his talents, Malian tutored the young Varkalen. He was promoted to COlonel, and served in several Campaigns.

He was made General of the VRF 7th Corps at a relatively young age, apparently with the help of his good friend (then Foreign Secretary) Eric Nygaard, the Liberal Government under James Alstan, and Malian herself (who had a lot of political capital at the time). He served and commanded in several operations. By far the most notable was his command of the VRF in the Southern Flank War. There he demonstrated considerable diplomatic talents, doing much to help unify the Coalition forces (often a difficult task). It should be noted that his actual military efforts, while competent, were without distinction.

This command also put him in the public image. His victory, charismatic appearance, and low-born background made him a media darling. His growing fame was seized upon by the Liberal Government at the time, eager to trumpet meritocratic values and successful foreign interventions. He became something of a poster-boy for the VRF, which coupled with his relative inexperience caused a resentment from other commanders (including, reportedly, Malian). He established political connections, first with Prime Minister James Alstan and then with his successor, William Hesseren (he remains close friend with Eric Nygaard). Many speculate a glowing career, be it in the VRF, or trying his hand at elected Office.

Name: William Hesseren, Prime Minister

Sex: Male

Age: Early-Mid 60s

Equipment/Belongings: The Trappings of State; the contents of his office and private study. He does not carry weapons.

Purpose: Hesseren is prone to caution. He feels sympathy for the Azens and minorities, but is wary of ordering Valaran involvement. He considers the Empire to be entangled in enough ‘foreign adventures’ already. He views those calling for intervention in Azenyanistan with deep suspicions, and suspects their motives are not noble. Nor does he consider their ideas practicable. And yet he has already brought the Empire into this quagmire.

Allegiance: Absolute loyalty to the state; considerable loyalty to the his political party (Social Democrats). Often opposed to various other Valaran institutions, such as the Foreign Ministry, and sceptical of people like Sathren or Eric. Trusts Helen deeply, and has increasing ties to VRF Generals like Siastan.

Short Backstory: Hesseren was never one for following trends. He grew up during the hard-edge ideological battles of the 1960 and 1970s, when there was a permanent stench of rot and national decline. He toiled mightily as a factory manager, fighting the Unions and the Plutocrats alike. He fought on, even as Aurelia’s manufacturing base withered, and rust seeped in. He joined the Social Democrats, just as they seemed to die. It meant Hesseren spent a long political age in the political wilderness of opposition. He railed against the Liberals they put a shiny gloss on the country, and he kept at it, even as they won election after election. Near 15 years Hesseren toiled as an opposition MP, a shadow minister for this and that. Most famously, he was shadow Health Secretary as the health service came under a wave of scandals — in that moment he shone, demolishing government bluster time and time again. A year later, and the Liberals still won. Hesseren’s boss resigned as leader of the Soc Dems, and almost by accident, Hesseren found himself in that position. The top of the greasy pole; the pinnacle of the Social Democratic Mountain. Only the mountain seemed half-dead, for that year marked the 20th anniversary of their loss of power. Hesseren did not seem like the man to reverse it. But reverse it he did. First, he gained an unsteady plurality in the snap election of 2015. He was not expected to last, for he was weak, and an array of factions snapped at his heels. The 2017 election looked like the end of Hesseren’s term of Prime Minister, barely 18 months of sullied compromise and defeat, where he had seemed against near every national trend there was. Yet maybe all that fruitless striving, those dour speeches and gruff honesty worked, maybe it had paid off. Hesseren triumphed, gaining a small majority. And power. Power to finally set the injustices straight. Hesseren had never followed trends. But maybe, he could set his own.

Name: Helen Crien, MP (Social Democrats), Foreign Secretary

Sex: Female

Age: Mid-40s

Equipment/Belongings: Minimal personal items; office supplies. She does not carry weapons.

Purpose: Helen shares Hesseren’s habitual scepticism of calls for intervention, often finding it to be a cover for imperialism or pettier goals. She is acutely aware of internal Foreign Ministry politicking, and so knows Sathren has personal goals. Goals that might not be in the national interest. She has also seen the mess Azenyanistan is in, and is undecided on whether Valaran support can really make a difference (or even a profit).

However, Helen has been more open to supporting intervention than the Prime Minister. This is for three reasons. Firstly, the terms of intervention is in theory, under her control. Secondly she also has her own personal objective — to use Azenyanistan to exploit Foreign Ministry factionalism. Sathren needs her support on this, which means she has leverage on him. Equally she can use it against his rivals. Thirdly, Helen genuinely wants to help, though this is normally something she likes to downplay.

Allegiance: To Hesseren, the Empire, the Social Democrats, but only if they continue to uphold the ideals she espouses. To little else, for Helen has few family she cares about, and disdains the patron-client relationships others build. She has a job, a duty, and a boss, and that is about it.

Short Backstory: Helen Crien worked her way up. It was not easy, for she had three unmistakable faults: she was born a woman, she was born poor, and she chose to become a leftist. These did not engender to Valaran elites, who were usually none of these things. But struggle Helen did, and succeed she did as well. Success came from unflinching attitude, a remarkable degree of competence, welded together by grit and firm determination. Crien was hard-headed, but possessed a strong business sense, and an even stronger personal morality, which bright her away from business, and into politics. There she strove, though with less recompense for her efforts. Other politicians, with parental income, powerful sponsors or easier smiles sailed past the solid worker. Helen grew less open, branded by unforgiving labour in the public’s interests. But enough saw the worth in her efforts, and in any case, her faults were less grievous sins in the Social Democrats, then in the unceasing limbo of opposition. She became an MP in the mid-2000s, and a Shadow-Minister from 2010. Finally, Helen had a pulpit to bring the government to account as part of Hesseren’s reformed Social Democrats. She wiped a few smiles off Eric Nygaard’s face. But Helen expected this to be the height of her career. The election, and the shaky Socialist victory that followed, came as a shock. Even more so did her real ministerial post, where she replaced the (definitely not smiling) Eric Nygaard as head of the Empire’s most powerful arm of Government, the Foreign Ministry. Except Helen found herself less a master and more a captive to currents, as the labyrinthine Ministry enveloped her and cast her adrift. It took three years, and another election to gain some semblance of control, and really that was a shallow thing. Sathren, Marec, Tarengaard and the others still plotted all around her. Another figure might have seen the impossibility of the task, and resigned to an easier post. But Helen kept at it. That was all she had ever done. She owed it to the country, and just maybe, she owed it to herself.

Name: Parys Sathren, Foreign Ministry Diplomat

Sex: Male

Age: Mid-30s

Equipment/Belongings: Finely cut clothes, minimal personal items. He does not carry weapons.

Purpose: Sathren is a firm believer in Valaran Empire as a force for good on the stage. He is also a firm believer in extracting benefit for the Empire on this very stage. Generally he views these goals as uncontradictory in nature. Both also seem to apply to the situation in Azenyanistan — or at least they did. He recognises that the place holds considerable risk, but he also sees great opportunity in the chaos. Sathren is also strongly interested in gaining an advantage over several other Ministry Factions. This makes him slightly paranoid, and also more willing to take risks.

Allegiance: To the Empire and to himself. Possibly a lingering attachment for his home-city of Lauran and North-Western Valaran (most of his support base is here). Everything else is negotiable. And that does mean everything. Sathren currently has a temporary alliance with his boss, Foreign Secretary Helen Crien, over Azenyanistan, but this is purely tactical for him. He does try to maintain as many friends as possible, and avoids deliberately screwing over people. This means he has a lot connections, and maintains cordial (if wary) relations with almost every other powerbroker or would-be King in the Empire (including his rivals in the Ministry), but has few strong ties to any of them.

Short Backstory: Born into a local elite (though not the nobility), Sathren was gifted with their typical grace and confidence, as well the usual plethora of neuroses. He bore all this well and easily. Sathren attended an exclusive series of schools, winning praise for his public speaking abilities and his general brightness. However, he was noted to be somewhat lazy, taking certain things for granted. Also apparent was his ambition, though it was of more a relaxed sort than many. After graduating, he spent two years at the Kalanor Consortium (a bank), before applying for the Foreign Ministry. From there he hurtled up the ranks, achieving an ambassadorial role at 25, and making a name for himself in the IFA and later the IFC Councils. He also forged an alliance with a fellow newcomer, Marec. He also gradually began work on his own faction inside the Ministry. This activity became much more important following the 2014 elections, where a the departure of Eric Nygaard created a significant power vacuum. Marec and other rising stars did the same, leaving the former friends more as rivals in a cold factional dispute. The prize was the foreign policy of the entire Empire, and the political stratosphere that came with it. In order to ascend, one first had to make a name for themselves, and that was exactly what Sathren hoped to do.

Name: Clara Varkalen, Foreign Ministry Diplomat

Sex: Female

Age: Early-20s

Equipment/Belongings: Minimal personal items; office supplies. A small knife, for personal defence only.

Purpose: Clara normally tries to separate the political from her job. She is aware that she is not the one making decisions here, and so restricts her views to simply dealing with the actions of her superiors. However, she has significant private sympathy for the plight of the Azens, as well as the travails of her superiors. If it was up to her, the government would do more. A lot more.

Allegiance: To her brother, above all else. To the Empire too, though perhaps not unconditionally. A newer, as yet untested, personal loyalty to Crien is also developing, though Clara is not fully aware of this process. She has some distaste, and also fear, for the Ministry Elites, like Sathren. She dislikes how they conduct things and their petty politicking, but is very aware that they can break her career, or might ask he to choose sides between them.

Short Backstory: Clara never came from much, and like her brother Siastan, had to work hard to get where she has. Her home was part of the Aurelian rustbelt, and this gave her a […]. From her parents and sibling came a strong work ethic, and a quiet drive. More studious than Siastan, she received excellent grades from one of the Empire’s top universities. This enabled her to gain a position at the Foreign Ministry. Her career expanded from there, but her rise has not been as meteoric as Siastan’s. In part, this was as she had no sponsor; she chose to remain factionless in the most factionalised organ of government. Some also whisper of entrenched sexism, though this has not prevented others (like Helen Tarengaard) from achieving high-status. In truth, Clara was simply more focused on the job, and less on Office Politics. She is also less sure of herself, in a place where confidence is currency.

Name: Eric Nygaard, MP (Liberals), Former Foreign Secretary.

Sex: Male

Age: Early 30s

Equipment/Belongings: Few. Well-cut business suits. A sword, and a hidden knife.

Purpose: Eric does not view himself as a decision maker in the Azen crisis. He merely wants to be able to able to restore his own political career. He will further the Empire’s interests if he can (albeit on his terms), but that is relatively incidental.

Allegiance:A mix of pragmatism, patriotism, strong ideological views and personal ambitions makes Eric a complex figure. Its not always easy to predict whether he will put his loyalty to the Empire, his disagreements with its present policy, or his personal ambitions first. As a member of the opposition, he holds no loyalty to Hesseren. Instead, his allegiances primarily remain with various members of the Foreign Ministry (Seward and Sathren) and the VRF (Siastan), though he chafes at the imbalanced nature of this relationship.

Short Backstory: For a long time, Eric Nygaard was seen as the bright future of the Liberal Party, a Prime Minister in waiting, the heir to Alstan’s Empire. His star has waned somewhat, but few underestimate him. People also recognise Eric as the principal architect of the Valaran Empire’s foreign policy for the past decade (a cause of praise and blame).

Born to a well-off but minor family in the Capital, Astaria, Eric was close to the elite, but never quite one of them. He attended perhaps the nation’s best school, made friends with the sons of nobles, but mostly remained focused on his studies and intellectual pursuits. he did however, make a number of well-connected friends. After a brief stint in the Foreign Ministry, he found himself in the civil service proper, gaining valuable government experience and various connections. From there he went into politics, making same for himself in Foreign and Military policy. James Alstan, then Defence Minister, became his political mentor, and together they ascended to the top of the Liberal Pyramid. As Alstan became Prime Minister, Nygaard soon fund himself in control of the Foreign Ministry, which reformed into the all powerful institution of today. Sathren, Marec, Tarengaard were all lieutenants of his. Eric also became .

Since the 2015 election, in which the Liberals were thrown out of power, Eric’s career has begun to drift. Many of his ambitions are on hold, and it turned out his influence was much reduced in opposition than it was in government. Where once people might have rated him the second most powerful person in the Empire, he barely makes the top 20 now. Nonetheless, he remains a leading politician.

Short Backstory: Rahimuddin was born into a standard Pakirani land owning family and thus recieved decent education at the local private school attended by everyone else in his small town of Gaslahk. After graduating from the local school Rahimuddin was accepted into the Pakirani Military Academy at Clifton, there Rahimuddin graduated with high numbers nearing the top of his class, recieving a commission into the Pakirani Army as an Leftenant in the Pakirani Recon Corps, while an Reconnaisaince Officer leading a platoon of recon soldiers Rahimuddin was at the forefront of military campaigns against militants and tribal unstability making him an hardened soldier and critical thinker. After six years of service as a recon soldier Rahimuddin attended Pakirani Airborne school and came out a qualified master jumper and shortly after attending SSG tryouts which were conveniently occuring the same week, during the tryouts Rahimuddins time as a recon officer had sculpted him to become a physically, mentally fit soldier allowing him to blaze through the tryouts, after passing tryouts Rahimuddin attended the full on 9 month grueling course to become an SSG operator. After graduation Rahimuddin participated in various high profile missions most of which were led by an C.I.S station chief, eventually Rahimuddin was noticed by the C.I.S and handpicked by a station chief to attend the C.I.S Qualifications Course, grudingdly leaving his soldiers life behind Ahmed started his new life as a black ops agent conducting various black activities in all parts of the world before becoming a Senior Agent to lead said activities, now he was being stationed in nearby Aegpyt has his base of operations to destabilize the region.

Short Backstory: Gilani joined the Pakirani Army following the footsteps of his uncle after having enough of school and refusing to continue schooling via higher education. After basic training Gilani was employed into the Army as an infantryman being moved from base to base as apart of their garrisons causing him great frustration and convincing him to attend Airborne school where he came out qualified as a master jumper and became an Airborne Trooper being stationed permaneatly in one of the two Airborne bases in Pakiranistan. Gilani was now being deployed to Azenyanistan as a small keg in the much bigger plan of annexation of Azenyanistan.

Short Backstory: Commander Grey was born a Remnant. She bleeds black, red, and white. Coming from a military family, it was no surprise she joined the Remnant Army. Exemplary action allowed Grey to join the Rangers, the precursor of the Sentinels. After rising to the rank of captain, Grey was transferred as a troop commander in the budding CPD, where she quickly advanced ranks, eventually becoming the ranking commander of all CPD assets, a massive accomplishment. While similar commands would be handled by a general officer, Commander Grey is left at a low rank due to the standing of the CPD as a lesser force compared to the rest of the Remnant Military.

Short Backstory: Colonel Veldon comes from a military family and was placed into a prestigious military school at six. His every waking moment was tinted in the color of the army and he grew to consider the ARA as his home just as much if not more so than his actual homeland. Graduating with brilliant marks he entered the Royal Commisioned Officer's College in Amios at eighteen where he learned specifically how to lead troops and work strategies. After five years he graduated but remained at RCO another year to complete a course on engineering that was offered to graduates. Upon completion he married his college girlfriend and entered the service in earnest as a Lieutenant.

Levi gained a name for himself in the Selvid insurrection of 2007. His unit went above and beyond the call of duty apprehending the leader of the extremist group and bringing him even after every member of the unit had suffered fragmentation or bullet injuries. Following this Levi was promoted to Captain and made second in an operation to pacify the rebellious southern Selvid population in Istella. After another great success with his superior officer's death and Levi assuming command he was promoted to Major and placed in complete command of the rest of the operations in the Slums outside of Istella.

After the insurrection Veldon would remain a Major for five years before being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Not present in conflicts for the next several years, Colonel Veldon continued to distinguish himself in wargames and training exercises and his name quickly became a well known one among senior echelon commanders. Less than a year prior to the operation in Aura Veldon was moved to the rank of Colonel, placing him in a position lead an entire task force in the Asturialic Army.

Between Veldon's track record of success and his experience in Urban environments as well as his extensive education in structural engineering, Veldon was the only choice for the operation to Aura and has been given full control of Asturialic forces in the area.

The middle of five children to his farmer parents, Russeau joined the famed Occitan Foreign Legion on an ill-thought-out dare. His rash, free-willed behavior was initially a pain for instructors and commanders, but he eventually found the structure of military life to be quite liberating. Having a clear mission statement allowed him to do his job and have fun when he wanted. Short Backstory: Grandson of the 1st Viscount Clayton, who himself commanded the Federationist 4th Army in Azenyanistan during the Second World War, Walker Clayton is the overall commanding officer for the Federationist Forces in Azenyanistan, a position he arose to in 2017, shortly after the withdrawal of the 5th Infantry Division from the country. He commanded 3rd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, Highland Foot during the original Azenyanistan crisis. Prior to the outbreak of the current crisis, he was slated to depart the country to take up position as the Chief of the General Staff, although his promotion has been postponed indefinitely.

She owed her name to her parents. Her father was an Azen soldier and her mother was also a soldier. But what made her unique was because her mother was Ysitir. While Yisiraritira inherited her fathers eyes, the shape of his face and the color of his hair, she inherited the lips of her mother and learned the same way she did when she was still in the G171.

Short Backstory:

Semira Solas Ester allowed herself to walk faster through the hall from her cell to the room where she would gather her things. Her watch, her personal ID, her clothes (before she found herself behind bars) and the rest. She heard the others who were in their cells cheering for her, speaking the same language she spoke. The language of the Sarns, the most oppressed group in Azenyanistan.

Escorted by two ACP officers, she entered the room and was directed to a table with a pen and papers. She picked it up with her free hand and signed the papers. Afterwards, she fetched her things and was freed.

In time, she would go out and accomplish what no Azen ever could to destroy their own country.

The Sarn entered the taxi and told her driver for the day “Take me to Freewaters, please.” And sighed as she heard the driver release her own long, deep respiration at hearing about the place that her passenger for the day wanted to go. Another Sarn wanting to go home, the driver thought. She grunted as she worked the clutch and got herself and this Sarn out of the street, away from the jail she got herself into.
Along the way, she could see how Azenyanistan was pulling herself into. People were anxiously gathering outside, watching the skies, hearing the screams of jets and the noise of propellers. Gunshots from distant battles reached them as more and more government troops and vehicles were in the city.

Then abruptly, the taxi stopped. Another checkpoint. One of the soldiers, with cropped hair and a hard look, made a rolling motion with her pointing finger and the driver rolled down all of her windows. The soldier then nodded and peered inside, seeing everything else and the Sarn. The soldier did not take too long and allowed them to move on.
It was a 25 minute drive to Freewaters. It was not like any other town in Azenyanistan. While it could boast a population of about 7,591, it was nothing to be proud of. Most of the people there were Sarns and Lishs, two major ethnic groups in Azenyanistan. And none of them were recognized.

The driver kept on complaining about the decaying roads, cursing the town leaders for not fixing them up for her. And the Sarn held her own tongue. Even though she kept a shiv from prison in her pack, she didn’t want to go back.
The taxi then halted just a few hundred meters from the main gate of the town, telling the Sarn “As far as I can go.”
The Sarn didn’t even receive any assistance from the driver as she got her things. She would have forgotten her bottle of water if not for her deftness in snatching it from the back as the taxi just went off. The Sarn abjectedly swore at the taxi but soon dusted her own clothes off and walked to the main gate.

Along the way, dried grass and withered shrubs lined the road. Stones and dirt covered some parts of it, making the Sarn feel and hear the crunch of her shoes on them.
Recollections of her childhood here came around. But like a deer bolting from wildfires, she only picked up the pace. At that, she almost dropped her pack but caught it.
Soon enough, she reached the main gate. The Sarn cringed at seeing it. The paint has faded. The wood was full of termites. And the metal holding it together was rusting. The Sarn was about to enter all by herself when a whisper from another woman came to her ears
“Is that you, sariki?”

The Sarn turned and saw her. Her. Silver hair, eyes and skin. Dressed in an uniform worth a half a dozen years and proudly wearing a badge that must have been polished a hundred times. She still had the smile and the touch to her voice. Sarn nodded and said softly “Siliza, I am her.”
And the guard nodded but the Sarn shook her head and said “Don’t nod, Segyanie. Be proud. Azasmi.”
Segyanie smiled and leaned in, kissing the Sarns neck. After that, she pulled away and the Sarn leaned in and kissed her neck too. But she took her time and let the guard speak “You came back. I am happy because of that.”
The Sarn nodded and nodded until she said “Yes. I am happy too.” She then jerked her head to the gate and said “Am I still welcome?”
The guard smiled again and said “You are always welcome. You are the hero of our people.” And the guard whistled loudly, a gruff voice speaking out from the other side of the gate “Opening!”

The gate opened with a deafening groan. It made the Sarn rub her arm in discomfort as she saw some pieces of the gate fall off. While she noticed that some of it was patched up, even Segyanie commented “It’s all the best that our repairmen could do. But we could afford no more materials.”
“I have some precious things that I could sell. Is Sihkas still around?”
“She is dead.” The Sarn stopped in her tracks and Segyanie turned around and said “It’s true. You’ve missed a lot of funerals. Selrim, Sopaz, Siazon, Siasian. Even your parents.”

The Sarn took a deep breath. And even as the townspeople came around to see her, with the lights on and the nightlife coming around, The Sarn deflated, gently putting her pack down on the street and saying simply “Oh.”
