Free Press disappeared in Policies tab

Postby The New California Republic » Thu Dec 14, 2017 4:40 am

Up until about 48 hours ago, I had the "Free Press" policy in the Policies tab. It has suddenly disappeared for no apparent reason. I haven't encountered any issue in that time that would cause it to disappear. I have also noticed, by looking at other nations, that other nations that previously had the "Free Press" policy have also lost it in the past 48 hours. Is this a bug or something?

It was probably removed due to wonkiness in how the policy was tracked by the engine, which led to too many nations being listed with an inaccurate policy for it to be worthwhile.

A staff member could explain in more detail.

Either that or perhaps there are plans to replace it with some other (more accurate) policy? I am sure all will be revealed when a site admin happens to stumble across this thread. I am just a bit bummed out that one of my policies unceremoniously evaporated into the ether.

Well, it hasn't affected this nation which still has the State Press policy.

State Press seems unaffected, but I cannot seem to find any nations with Free Press.

Yes I have noticed that as well. I edited my original post and the thread title accordingly.

That is terribly odd. I suspect some admin shenanigans. I wonder what's going on.

Should we sacrifice a lamb in the meantime to see if it appeases them?

Max Barry is from Australia, and at least a couple of our IEs are/were from Scotland. "Sacrifice a lamb" may hold a different meaning to them. I'd hold off if I were you.

We eliminated the policy because it was a stats based policy, and the stats it was based of off didn’t do an ideal job of modeling whether or not the nation had free press. We were therefore getting a lot of complaints about why did X choice lead to the elimination off the free press. The state news policy continues.

Oh, well that is a bit disappointing. Anyway, thanks for the explanation.

Policy Disappearance

Postby Convaria » Thu Dec 14, 2017 7:02 pm

A few days ago I got the Free Press policy as a result of an issue. Today I cannot find it in my list of policies. I looked through my notices to see if I accidentally cancelled it but nothing shows up. I have the notice that tells me I enacted that policy and that's it. I also got the State Surveillance policy today. I'm now wondering if it is a bug and I should have the Free Press or if State Surveillance cancels it automatically.

Sorry if I'm doing this wrong or putting this in the wrong place I just want to know what happened

The "Free Press" policy was deleted from all nations due to the lack of a satisfactory way to track it.

So there are won't be a "free trade" policy listing, but there will be an autarky policy one displayed if the nation bans free trade? The "default" or nominal status for most NationStates is that they are electoral democracies, but if they go for getting rid of elections in an issue, they gain the autocracy policy? And if they choose an issue that would reverse one of those policies, then it would go away from the polices tab? Like if you started having elections again or opened your borders to trade again, autarky or autocracy goes away?

Ergo, free press is stats based until you go for government control of the press in that particular issue, then you gain the state press policy.
An alt-America that had a grand bargain struck with London in the 1760s and remained under the British Crown (Turtledove's "The Two Georges"), mixed with some of Sobel's "For Want of a Nail" and a lot of the anthology "Columbia and Britannia," the sci-fi NZ novel "Anno Domini 2000 or Woman's Destiny", and cameos of other alternate histories. “The Rock of the Britannic Commonwealth,” an alliance of Britannic and former colonies as partner-nations in personal union and/or in association.

NS stats: mostly policies

IC/RP main supranational IGO: United Britannic Commonwealth of Nations.

There is an Autarky policy:
https://www.nationstates.net/nation=ton ... l=policies
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. | Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

Which policies are stats-based? Because if there are some stats-based policies that do not always get activated by choosing a certain option, then I may have to add a new Issues article editing guideline on NSindex. I expected that covering policies in Issues would be a lot easier than the stats effects that we just finished getting rid off.

I have state press now and have no idea where it came from. I have been waiting for an issue to repeal it, but have not had the opportunity yet.
