Out-of-Character Thread

A roleplay about a world that's not so unlike ours. Where lands familiar to us are populated by those much different than us,

And yet all too similar.

A world just as flawed, and just as impressive.

This is the history of that world, the story of man. The test of time.

Introduction

Test of Time is an epic historical roleplay set on Earth, and maybe beyond, that will let players lead nations and cultures over a long period of three thousand years, and perhaps more. It begins in a time around 1000 B.C., though its history beforehand is much more different than ours. Players will contribute to the history of this alternate world through their cultures and nations. This will be a story of conquest, migrations, great men and lesser men, discovery, creation, art, upheaval, faith, and the evolution of languages, traditions, the creation of grand cities and empires, and, perhaps, the conquest of the stars themselves.

Regulations

1. Point of Divergence & Alternate History
The Point of Divergence is the term given to the point in time at which this world diverged from ours, when things started to happen differently. In the Test of Time world, this point was 50,000 B.C.E., meaning that everything that developed in the real world after that point did not have to develop. Many things have stayed the same; horses, dogs, sheep, cats, and other animals we are familiar with were domesticated, as were crops such as wheat, barley, rye, etc. Horses still went extinct in the Americas, the Younger Dryas still occurred, and tectonics stayed the same, with continents, islands, rivers and other landforms having formed the same shapes as they did in the real world at this time. The main, and most important change relates to people; their culture, customs, language, religion, beliefs, modes of organisation, art, all is changed. Of course this is not to say that everything is completely different; because of domestication of rice in China, it is still necessary to place importance on boiling food, and because of the different intensities of sunlight around the globe, Africans are still mostly dark-skinned while northern Europeans are light-skinned. However, nothing specific of society would be familiar to us; there are no pyramids, no Egyptian kingdoms ruled over by pharaohs with hieroglyphics, no Nazi Germany under Hitler, no proto-Indo-European language, nor any descendants of it. There are still most likely people living in the Nile valley doing quite well, and a fascist empire could form where Germany is in the real world, and there will still be languages that may have characteristics of Indo-European languages, but history has developed differently from real life, in all ways except the most basic ones. Agriculture is still around, language as a concept exists, fire was discovered, but specific cultures, races, ideologies, religions, states, nations, languages and similar concepts that exist or existed in real life will not exist here, and have not existed here. Make sure your application and in-character posting reflects this.

2. Activity Level
If you apply and are accepted, then you must stay active. You are expected to make a post either in the IC thread or the OOC thread every week or so, and you must make an IC post at least once every few weeks. Of course, far greater levels of activity would be preferred than this, and would be expected and required if you hope to do anything meaningful in the IC, but what this means is that if you are nowhere to be seen for weeks at a time, it will be assumed that you have left the RP, and your nation or state will be turned into an NPC that others can apply for. However, if this happens, and you return, you are allowed to take it back if nobody else has claimed it, or apply as something else. There are no hard limits on when you are considered inactive and removed from the roster, as if you have historically been a reliable and active poster, you may be granted some extra time as leniency, but you will be considered for being marked down as inactive as soon as you go a week without making an appearance on either the OOC or the IC, and you will be considered for marking down after a fortnight without an IC post. If you know you will be away from the RP for some time, and intend to return, talk to one of the people running to RP, and it should be possible to make arrangements that will mean you are not struck from the roster. You will be TGed with a reminder about activity some time before you are struck from the roster for being inactive.

3. Weekly Updates
Once accepted, other than staying active, you must also submit a weekly update on whatever you play as. It must contain the most up-to-date information about whatever you are playing as, and must include figures such as your population, and descriptions or maps of your territory. They should be posted in the Update thread, linked to the Encyclopedia Historia, using the form in the OP of that thread. It does not matter when in the week you submit it, but it is requested you keep approximately seven day gaps between your updates for maximum efficiency and convenience, rather than, say, submitting them with alternating one and thirteen day gaps. If you fall behind on your updates, you may be asked to backdate some updates, and you will be TGed with a reminder that you are falling behind. If you know that you will be unable to submit updates for a time, or are unable to, talk to one of the people running the RP, and it may be possible to make special arrangements.

4. Timescale
When posting in the IC, make sure all posts are dated with a year, in a system that can easily be understood. The Encyclopedia Historia gives an indication of the approximate year IC, however, it may not always be updated. To date your posts accurately, look at the last post in the IC that was dated; if it was posted on the same day as you are posting, then consult the Encyclopedia Historia for the current rate of progression, and date your post to be within the rate of progression's margin with the last post. However, if the last post in the IC was not the day you are posting, then take the number of days since an IC post, multiply it approximately by the rate of progression, and date your post to that time. To demonstrate; take a situation in which the Rate of Progression is "30 years a day at most", and the last post is 1345 A.F.Z. on the same day. Your post may be between 1345 A.F.Z. and 1375 A.F.Z., or even slightly before, if necessary for a storyline. However, if that most from 1345 A.F.Z. was 3 days ago, then you may date your post anytime from 1345 A.F.Z. to 1435 A.F.Z., the interval being 90 years due to 30 multiplied by three. It is recommended and suggested that you date it to near the maximum in these cases though, to avoid extremely slow progression, though not always necessarily pushing it as fast as it will go. Reserving posts, especially in order to backdate, is discouraged. If you are going to have a back-and-forth dialogue or progression, consider doing a collaboration post, coordinating, editing and melding your posts and interactions offsite into a single coherent one for the IC; Google Docs might be a good tool for this.

5. Player Versus Player War
If you decide to go to war against another RPer, the preferred method for deciding the course and conclusion of the war is by mutual negotiation, understanding and agreement between the parties involved. If this path is taken, it is recommended that battles where a back-and-forth interaction occurs should be put into one single collaboration post, as so not to clog up the IC or drag the timeline out unnecessarily. This also applies if a battle is arbitrated, though most arbitration will be for wars. Arbitration occurs when concord between warring parties cannot be reached, as is often the case, and is decided by members of management; where possible, it will be the Director and Vice-Directors, with consultation from all other parties. Things that will be looked at are the terrain of the area in which the war is fought, the number and calibre of the troops available to each side, the tactics and strategies posited, and even the quality of posts; in some cases, a random number generator may even be used to help decide. Each party to the war may also present their views on what should happen in the war to the arbitrator or arbitrators in a single, designated telegram or otherwise private document (unless all parties agree to make their documents public). Given all of this, the parties are presented with the results, and they can then decide on peace terms. When arbitration occurs, it will not be done for individual battles, unless both parties are able to agree what happens after the battle, and the only point of conflict that needs resolving is the battle; the reason for not resolving individual battles in a war one at a time is that it takes up too much time, and is unnecessary. Arbitration will generally be swift, if the necessary information is available; this requires orderly submission of weekly updates, and some posts or wiki material to go off. Arbitrators should be removed from the action, and unbiased; parties and management will decide what this means, and therefore exclude some from the arbitration process, of private discussion and debate.

6. Natural Events
There will be natural events that occur from time to time in the world. They will largely follow the real world's course; volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and other tectonic incidents will not have been affected by the alternate timeline much, as they work on a far greater scale and a longer timeframe than the RP's POD and duration covers. The climate will also largely follow the same pattern as in the real world, except near the end of the RP when global warming and other human interference have an effect. Plagues are more related to the distribution of humans, and will occur more randomly, and depend on population density, hygiene, and the presence of people near animals which they are not ordinarily in much contact with. Other events, such as fires, storms, floods, sinkholes, insect swarms, will be decided on a case by case basis; some floods, especially those of rivers, were because of how people built up and along the river, for example, while others were due to weather, which in turn may have been caused by simple chance, or greater climactic trends.

7. Nations, States, Countries & Civilisations
When you app, you will app as either a nation or a state. Only if you are more advanced will you apply for a state, most likely; in ancient times, most will not have the technological capability to form a state. What is the difference? Well, a nation is a group of people who share a common ethnicity, culture, language, even religion, or some other social construct or other. They may not have a government uniting them, but they identify in commonality, and have a certain cohesiveness. They can split, merge, and are generally fairly fluid. A state, on the other hand, is a territorial, that is to say, landed government. It may have several nations in it, or only a part or parts. It is defined by its governmental unity, its ability to enforce laws, policies, edicts and the like, and borders where applicable. Most of the time, things will be fairly simply; you will have a nation, or a state, probably both, with large crossover. However, with a given nation, you may have it in several states, and control those states so long as your portion of the nation in those states dominates. On the other hand, you may also have a state that has many nations within it. In any case, you may only ever have a maximum of one nation, and one state; the nation with as many states under its grasp as you will, the state with as many nations. This may sound a bit confusing, but simply put, it gives some lenience for you to control groups that are ethnically divergent from you, or more than one territorial entity if they all cultured as you are.

8. Non-Player Nations and States
There will be various nations and states around the world that are not controlled by any RPers; they may have been created by management to fill a void or to some other end, or may have once been played by an RPer, who has now left it for whatever reason, perhaps to RP elsewhere in the world or having left the RP entirely. Whatever the reason, they have no RPer controlling them, and are therefore governed by different rules from RPer-led entities, to prevent their exploitation, and to keep their actions realistic even without someone behind them. These non-player entities will not launch aggressive wars, unless provoked or otherwise purposefully caused to do so ICly, or unless it is logical to do so for their self-interest, and where a party, most probably the one being attacked, reasonably requests it OOCly. They will, however, fight defensive wars to the best of their ability, and will progress technologically and economically at a rate only somewhat inferior to what it would do if an RPer were controlling it. Diplomatically, they will mostly accept whatever propositions an RPer puts forwards, if they are reasonable; it would not be reasonable, for example, for a non-player entity of a different ethnicity and religion and of a similar strength to accept an offer of annexation. However, in all interactions, the management should be notified, and if interactions require the non-player's approval or acceptance, then the management will decide whether it is realistic for it to do so.

9. Realism
The historical theories iterated in "Why the West Rules: For Now", by Ian Morris, and "Guns, Germs, and Steel", by Jared Diamond, by and large, will be the theory followed in determining the course of history in this RP. Much of what is said is fairly mainstream; the idea that humans, despite differences in race, still mostly act the same, for example. However, some specific elements are particularly important. The idea that domesticable animals meant close contact with animals in Afroeurasia, thus resulting in considerable disease transfer, will be adopted, meaning Old World diseases will developed and devastate the New World, while things will not occur vice versa. The "Five Horsemen of the Apocalypse", famine, epidemics, uncontrolled migration, state failure and climate change, will be the cause of acute population decline, generally. Increased demand resulting from increased social development being itself the driver of the pressures that cause collapses, in short, overpopulation, will cause empires to fall, and in fact may be the main way in which civilisations take serious tumbles. Racial makeup will play very little role in determining how the pieces fall, due to humans being genetically mostly pretty similar. Cities and centralised states will not arise in regions where agriculture is newly introduced, primitive, or otherwise deficient, perhaps due to climate. These ideas and statements, and others from these books as well as from some other sources, will synthesised to form the model of historical change, evolution and progression used to determine realism in this RP. You are welcome to ask questions about how the model works, and to suggest changes or modifications to it, but it is definite that this is the mindset that the RP will run on, rather than one that might justify an industrial revolution in Aborigine Australia, given simply luck, or do something similar.

10. Management
This RP has an unusually large staff of people running it; most RPs just have an OP, a few co-OPs, and maybe a couple more positions such as vice-OP or mapmaker. This RP has a considerably larger number of positions, and a considerably larger number of people in them. This is due to a few factors. One is that a large number of people are expected to join, many of which may soon leave after applying or being accepted, and many of which may be newbies to the scene. People like this will require more work, to get them up to speed on how things work, and those who leave soon after joining will create extra paperwork without ever contributing much.

To combat this, a larger team is needed, one that can efficiently divide and complete the workload associated with the RP. Another reason is that the pace of the RP is very fast compared to most other RPs, and thus even if detail is spared, a great deal more is going on. With things happening faster, it only makes sense that maps will need to be updated faster, population checks completed faster, everything done to match the pace of the IC, that hurtles through history compared to most RPs. The team is made entirely of volunteers, and they are giving their time of their own free will to keep the RP running smoothly, while probably also diverting time from their IC activities or other RPs to do so; please be nice to them. If you wish to become a member of management, TG a member of management about it; TGing the Head, Vice-Heads and Managers will generally never go amiss with regards to this, and you may also wish to TG members of the department, especially the head, that you wish to join.

The departments, other than head management where the Directors, Vice-Directors and Managers are, are Research, Documentation and Enforcement. Researchers conduct research, as you'd expect, and are in charge of realism. They do the hard yards in terms of figuring out what is likely, plausible and reasonable within the context of the RP's history. Documentation is where information is gathered; they collect and compile updates, and may chase people down for their updates, or work with enforcers to see it is done. They also maintain the wiki, and generally keep everybody informed, and make sure records are usable, accessible and up to date. Enforcers look after IC quality and OOC civilty; if an argument is getting too rowdy or if people are getting spammy or completely and consistently off-topic in the OOC, they will be on it. If there are one-liners and posts with jarring grammatical and spelling errors, they will be on it. If people are continually posting what they shouldn't in the update thread, or vandalising the threads or wiki, or continually not submitting updates or otherwise not conforming to regulations, it will be the job of the enforcers.

Application
NS Name -
Names - state name: the commonwealth of rivermen
short name: the rivermen
Culture name: ardusian
Symbols - the official flag of the commonwealth is a green hill with a white city atop of it which is encompassed by a large golden sun, the green hill has a blue River passing through it.
The shortened version of the flag used in the military is simply the green hill and the river snaking through it.
Territories - the commonwealth controls what is now known as the greater London area. This territory is divided into 8 separate provinces with 7 of these being based of the old homeland of the 7 tribes that existed before the unification of the commonwealth, the 8th province is the ancient city of Ardus malth.

Government - the commonwealth is controlled by a elected dictator known as the first citizen. This dictator is elected by the representatives of the 7 provinces, the 8th province is not given a vote due to the fact that it is directly controlled by the first citizen.

The provinces do not embrace the democratic system when deciding their leader instead they are chosen by a hereditary governers who are the direct descendant of the original tribe leaders, they must also share their power with each provinces governor general who serve to make sure that the tribes do not get too rebellious.
Leader(s) - the first citizen of the Commonwealth is currently Althyed Olthas the first among equals. The first citizen retains the right to have complete amnesty from laws within the boundaries of Ardus Malth, capital of the commonwealth, however if he was to step outside the city limits the he would be subjected to the same laws as all others must obey.
Capital - the marble city of Ardus Malth.

Demographics - in the commonwealth there are roughly 109 million people living in it. Within this population somewhere around 9% of the population of the commonwealth are non citizens who are essentially slaves except for the fact that they are permitted to own their own home, non citizens are mostly consistent of reformed criminals and religious heretics. Only 1% of the population of the population are openly declared slaves. In terms of religion 90% of the population worship the state religion due to the fact that to be a citizen one must worship the state religion.
Ethnicity - the entirety of the country is consistent of what in modern day are considered to be Celtic.
Religion(s) - the state religion is known as Riverthyn and it had two all power full gods whom are the physical incarnations of the river Ardus (the Thames). These two gods are married and were the mother and father of the world and all it's inhabitants however their marriage is rather unstable. The gods also have servants who are known as the giants and it is their duty to make sure that history follows the route planner by the two incarnations of the river Ardus. Another important figure in the religion is the prophet Algyoth who sank beneath the river Ardus for 12 days and received a message from the gods saying to establish a city from where the gods light would shine across the world.

Some rituals within the faith is that when a couple get married they must bathe together in the water of the river Ardus, if this water is unavailable then they may use the water from any near by river. In terms of special occasions within the faith there is Algyoth's day which is day entirely dedicated to prayer and there is the god's wedding which is a festival honouring the marriage of the gods and the practice of agriculture which is sacred in the faith.
Language(s)In the commonwealth there are three distinct languages that are recognised by the government which are: Imperial Ardusian, the language designed for government and military use so as to strengthen the first citizens control over the nation, all government and military records are written in imperial Ardusian. Then there is common Ardusian, the language used by the masses and for that reason it is far less cryptic than imperial Ardusian, another divergence it has from imperial Ardusian is that it allows for a much greater expression of emotions while imperial Ardusian has no such need for such words. Finally there is ancient Ardusian, the only one of the recognised languages that does not have a written form due to the fact that it dates back to the earliest dialect that used by those who lived by the Ardus in ages past. This language is used by the priesthood and is only tolerated because of it's divine nature.

Military Organizarion - The military structure of the commonwealth is made so that every tribe within the commonwealth is directly contributing towards it's defence and due to the fact that the city of Ardus Malth is still counted as a tribe within the government records they too must contribute a legion towards the commonwealth however their own legion serves more as a city guard rather than an active legion. The legions are divided into two parts which are commanded by an individual primus who both report to the legion master whom is in charge of commanding the entire army. Moving further down the chain of command you have the senior guard masters who command in total 250 men each and then at the second to last rank you have the guard master who are in charge of around 10 men and these men are at the bottom of the pile and are your basic guardsman.

The Commonwealth also has the right in time of an extreme war to conscript every non-citizen into the fyddweision, a conscript/slave army which is essentially for holding up the enemy while the legions attempt to build themselves up. The fyddweision follow the same system of ranking as the legions however once a member of the fyddweision serves for 5 years then they are granted citizenship however the chance of them living through this period is extremely low.
Army - The total number of men within the legions are exactly 1,000 men in each one bringing the total number of men in active duty within the commonwealth up to 8,000 men. The majority of these men are spearmen who are knwon as the waymeistr who famed across the island of Britanki for their extremely long spears and their impassable wall formation which essentially is a long line of men who hold out extremely long spears in front of them in order to create an impassable wall of spears in which the enemy are forced to run against in order to break the legions line.

A far smaller portion of the military are the swordsmen known as the cleddythfuth who are armed with the deadly hook spear, because to use a hook sword is such a specialist weapon and takes extremely long to learn how to use the cleddythfuth are a highly elite unit used only in desperate situations and to serve as the legion masters guard.

Another large part of the legions are the light archers who use a form of compact bows to rain down a shower of arrows upon the enemy and are know as the saethafn . They are an essential part of the impassable wall tactic for while the main spear line blocks the enemy advance it is the duty of the archers to whittles the enemy down. Another tactic the light archers play a role in is the the dodging hare where the main body of the legion will fake a retreat and the archers who had been hiding in the shrubbary would pepper the enemy with arrows.

The hook sword is one of the most ancient weapons of the Commonwealth dating back to the tribal days of the Ardus region and before it was utilised as a military weapon it was used by various priests and shamans who would roam the land. It is unknown who actually invented the hook sword however it has always been present in the Riverman society.

(How large is your army, how many soldiers, tanks, cavalry, artillery, etc? What is their level of technology? What are their tactics? What are their weapons? Essentially, give a general description.)
Navy - The Navy is 25 ships large with 2 of which being merchant, 10 of them being large ramming ships whose sole purpose is to ram and destroy enemy ships, the other 13 of the ships are armed with a form of ballista and who in a naval battle will stay far away from the main battle while the ram ships engage the enemy.

Economy - the economy of the Commonwealth follows a strictly enforced isolationist doctrine and attempts to communicate with the outside world as little as possible. The Commonwealth has been able to achieve autarky meaning that they have no reliance on the savage tribes of the lands beyond the Ardus. (What is the state's economic status?)
Trade - the Commonwealth despite it's isolationist doctrine does still pursue trade with the tribes around it however the merchants that it does send out tend to double as both missionaries and scouts nevertheless when the Commonwealth is legitimately interested in trade with other nations it has a vast array of goods to give them. The main ones include copper, bronze trinkets and cotton (What are the exports and what are the imports? With who does the state trade with? Essentially, give a general description of trade within your state.)
Currency - in terms of currency the Community is rather odd due to the fact that it doesn't really have any kind of currency, instead every citizen is allocated a certain amount of food and goods that they may collect from various government institutions across the Commonwealth. This system of government allocated goods does not however apply to non citizens who reside within the Commonwealth instead they are permitted to use a a small bronze ball with a cross put into it in order to purchase goods off what the government refers to as the free market. This currency is also used by traders when they occasionally venture outside of Commonwealth territories.(What is the money of your state? Does it have a serious inflation problem? What type of currency is it? Is it fiat based, metal based, or something else entirely?)

History - the history of the Commonwealth begins with the great migration of Humanity that brought people to the lush river Ardus. From the very beginning of the people settling by the river their had been 8 tribes, each one of them vying for power over the river however not a single one of them was capable of destroying the other. Occasionally some Sharkey coalition would form and attack another tribe however these coalitions would always end in a betrayal from one of it's members.

So this age of war and betrayal continued for countless years with every tribe slowly drawing closer towards extinction. This status quo changed with the arrival of the great prophet: Algyoth.

It is said that Algyoth started out life as a mere traveler who went between the tribes and explored along the river Ardus. This type of person was immensely dangerous to the tribes as seen as across hundreds of years they had been demonising the other tribes making them appear as beasts however the existence of a person who knew people from each of these tribes and understood that each one of them was Human. Eventually Algyoth was captured by one of the tribes (it is forgotten exactly which one did it) and was sentenced to death for spreading seditious information among the tribe. The method in which his death was to be carried out was that he would be drowned in the great river Ardus and for 12 days and for 12 nights the body of Algyoth remained submerged beneath the river however after 13 days of his body being submerged beneath the waves Algyoth emerged from the river with a revelation about the gods of the river and a vision of a great city made of marble on the mouth of the river Ardus. He never did live to see the great city on the mouth of the river Ardus however the religion that he founded spread along the river Ardus like wildfire.

Now the aforementioned cycle still would not have changed despite the change of religion, luckily for the people of the Ardus one of the tribes known as the Balaranti decided that it should be them who would fulfil the prophecy left by Algyoth that there would one day be a glorious marble city at the mouth at the Ardus. This settlement is known as Ardus Malth and in it's early days it as little more then a wooden settlement however the Balaranti while not being one of the strongest tribes militarily were certainly one of the richest and so they sent ships across the island of Britanki in search of some of the greatest craftsman on the entire island. Soon the city had indeed become a beacon of knowledge throughout the Ardus river and their technological prowess was famed throughout the isle. The city of Ardus Malth for a long time was ruled by hereditary monarchy however most of the kings who ruled the city were mere puppets to the far more powerful merchant princes, a group of highly wealthy merchants who made their money off the lucrative trade that went on with the various tribes in the region, it is for this reason that Ardus Malth did not go on the war path.

This world of peace and trade was soon to end as a military coup took place replacing Dalyith the second with the famed military general and executor of the coup Gyeth of Aghol. Gyeth was not a man to be pushed around by the merchant princes which lead to the first instance of an isolationist Ardusian economy. The second group of reforms that Gyteth passed were ones concerning the military and how the city of Ardus Malth treated the tribes surrounding it. After these reforms were passed the city state of Ardus Malth now claimed the entirety of the river Ardus as their territory and only a few years after claiming this territory the city state of Ardus Malth marched to war. This war was by no means an easy one for Ardus Malth for despite their technological advantage they simply did not have the manpower that the tribes did wield. The war continued on for many years until at long last Ardus Malth was victorious in the year 1330 BC. The next few years of the new Ardusian empire were ones of intellectual enlightenment and of the construction of great cities. It is also believed that it was in this time period where the popular sport of debating did emerge.

This age of enlightenment was not to last. A great plague swept across the land decimating entire towns and leaving the empire in taters. soon it was devided up between various warlords and the old feuds between tribes had once again resurfaced. Yet another dark age had emerged in the Ardus region and this time the warring factions had far deadlier weapons. However despite the general barbarism of this time period it was also in this time period where the concept of a commonwealth between each and every tribe with in the Ardus region arose when the famous philosopher and author Clyarth Fyldwith wrote his famous novel "The river that binds us". This novel also detailed ways that the Ardus region could be united through diplomatic methods. For the next few years many warlords claimed to represent a Commonwealth however it was not until the year 1032 BC until the first true commonwealth was formed by the glorious First Citizen Althyed Olthas through shrewd diplomacy with the various warlords. Soon due to his reformed army and large kingdom the First Citizen was capable of conquering of nearly all of the Ardus except for the ancient city of Ardus Malth. The siege to take it lasted 3 years and many, many soldiers died in the siege however it was finally taken and was made the capital of the new commonwealth however Ardus Malth did not escape without punishment for noe the First Citizen was permitted to disobey any law within the city of Ardus Malth and he definitely took advantage of that privilege.

Now the Commonwealth looks outside of the Ardus region to the island of Britanki as a whole and envision an empire that spans across the entire island.

Will the time jumps that happen every day grow shorter as time progresses say that in the 1960's it will only progress at 2 years a day?

In terms of culture, can we make something completely up, or does it have to have some sort of similarity with the actual cultures?

I think that was mentioned in the Divergence part of the Regulations post. Basically, some things you would need to have similar just based on geography (Like Rice being important in Asia, and no horses in America) but he heavily implied you could make your own cultures within limits.
