Political Crisis in the Kingdom of Meliougi (Open, MT)

Postby Meliougi » Sat Dec 09, 2017 8:57 pm

Iremipoli, Kingdom of Meliougi
December 8th, 2017

The capital of the Kingdom of Meliougi was abuzz with rumor and anxiety. In mid-November, elections had been held, and an unexpectedly high turnout had come out for the elections. Normally, these elections had been rather droll affair, with the National Restoration Party and its allies using the elections to cement its "mandate". In truth, most Meliougians knew that the elections were fixed to favor the NRP, with the NRP always assuming a majority of the seats in Parliament, with its allies having a few seats to secure that supermajority, whereas the opposition, which could not organize political parties and thus ran as non-aligned independents, always had just enough seats to portray a democratic opposition, but not enough to cause any real harm to the government. But for the past couple years, something had come over the Meligougian people. It wasn't rebellion, not entirely. It was a sentiment that people were fed up with the status quo: the Chancellor, Andreas Mavromichalis, had ruled Meliougi for thirty years, as the second post-1938 crisis Chancellor; the National Restoration Party continued to push the same policies and ideologies on the people; too much free will led to disappearances and executions; and the economy stagnated under the austerity measures of the NRP government, all while the Government's leaders seemed to be doing very well for themselves - the opposition would allege that this was due to corruption, while NRP members would roll their eyes and move on to the next item of business...all while punishing those MPs in ways that would discourage further acts of sedition. But five years ago, Basileus Ioannis VII, passed away. He was a rather unremarkable, but stiff, man. His son, on the other hand...well, Basileus Nikolaos VIII Angelos, who was eighteen when he ascended the throne, would prove to be an altogether different monarch. He insisted on giving monthly radio addresses to his people - the Chancellor felt that the Monarch should not make speeches or addresses via television, so the Palace used the Palace Radio station that was under the control of the Crown in order to get out its message without too much government tampering - and, rumor had it, would frequently grill Chancellor Mavromichalis on the state of the Kingdom. He was handsome, was kind, and apparently made it a habit to walk out into the capital to see how his subjects fared, a far cry from his great-grandfather who had welcomed the NRP into the government in 1938.

So, the Meliougian people, most of whom were fed up with the status quo, dealing with a stagnant economy, feeling crushed under austerity measures and a government that insisted on involving itself in every manner of life and limiting free will and discussion, and feeling reinvigorated by a young basileus, went to the polls. Unofficial polls had suggested the most unusual and unsuspecting thing: that the opposition would win a slight majority in the Parliament, 218 seats, to be exact. Expectations were high, there were talks of a new government...perhaps, even, a new future. So, on November 25th, the Meliougian voters went to the polls...and were met with something unexpected, yet at the same time, what were they expecting? On November 30th, the Election Commission announced that the National Restoration Party won 275 seats, with its two allies winning 50 seats collectively...whereas the opposition won 110 seats. Allegations of ballot stuffing, vote rigging, police and military intimidation, and outright thuggery were made. Chancellor Mavromichalis released a statement promising an "investigation" into the allegations, and shortly thereafter arrested many prominent opposition leaders and activists. The tension had been boiling for days...

In Theotokis Square, one of the main squares within the capital renamed for the first NRP Chancellor, a crowd began to gather in the morning. It was small, at first, barely one hundred people. They were waving Meliougian flags, holding posters and signs calling the NRP Government thieves and brutes, and shouting anti-government slogans. Security forces had deemed the gathering a nuisance, but higher ups decided that as it was a Thursday, the protestors go to work after letting their steam out. The problem was, no one had taken into consideration the 15% unemployment rate, nor the post-election frustration. In a matter of hours, as word spread through social media, that crowd in the square grew into the thousands...and by the evening, it had become the largest post-1938 protest to take part in Meliougi. Needless to say, everyone, including the opposition, had been caught off guard. Official government estimates that were shared with the Crown and with the state-run press put the numbers at a few thousand...in reality, there were one hundred thousand demonstrators filling up the square and blocking the roads. It was here that people began to call for new elections. At 8:45 PM, security forces moved against the protesters in the square, firing tear gas and charging the crowds with truncheons and riot shields, firing rubber bullets and spraying water hoses at concentrations of demonstrators...

A young woman, a student at Iremipoli University, was running from the police. Her name was Cassandra Eleftherias. She had come onto the square with her friends, and wasn't particularly political. In truth, she had come to see what was up after classes had concluded. But the police had broken the protest apart, charging in using everything at their disposal, save live rounds. So Cassandra ran. She ran and ran, through alleys and side streets, hearing police officers chasing other protesters, screams as people were beaten and arrested, the wailing of sirens. She made a turn left...right...right again...and ran right into an officer. "You, you're under arrest!" he screamed, spittle shooting from his mouth. "Please, no, I was just with my fri-". Before she could finish her sentence, her explanation, a truncheon was swung at her face, she could feel her jaw cracking from the blow...and soon she didn't feel anything else, with blood crawling out of her wounds onto the pavement. Realizing what had been done, the officer fled in his car, leaving the body of Cassandra Eleftherias to sit there. What neither Cassandra nor that officer knew was that a resident of one of the apartments bordering the alley had recorded the entire encounter on his phone, and he had unwittingly broadcast her murder in live time to his social media account. The footage would be circulated, and in a matter of hours, Theotokis Square filled up again. Now, two new battle cries were being shouted from the megaphones: Remember Cassandra, and Down with the regime.

Hello Sirs and Madams,

On behalf of His Imperial Majesty's Government, we issue this statement with disgust by the blatant ignoring of human rights and obvious rigging of the elections by pathetic men who realize that without them rigging it, they could not win it. As we watch the situation unfold in Meligougi and see innocent lives ended voicing their opinions, we see bravery too. We see protesters who will Continue to protest and we support them in their fight. Unfortunately, one lost her life, Her name is Cassandra and she will not be forgotten. We will fight for her and for others who fight this illegal regime

His Imperial Majesty's Government condemns this and issue official sanctions until the National Restoration Party withdraws from Government and hands over its Leadership to be charged with criminal activities and allow independent investigations into the Elections. We urge other nations to follow suit and help us with freeing the Millions of Meliougians enslaved by this brutal regrime.

To: The Imperial Foreign Affairs Ministry, The Kaiserreich of Reutoa
From: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs

To Whom It May Concern,

His Serene Majesty's Government is disappointed in the aggressive maneuvering of the Kaiserreich's government into what is a domestic affair of the Kingdom. The death of Ms. Eleftherias is an unfortunate incident, and the Ministry of Justice is launching an investigation into the circumstances of her passing. As for your demands that the legitimate and elected Government hand itself over to a foreign power for a trial conducted by said foreign power, such demands are ridiculous. If there was any wrongdoing on the part of this Government, we will be held accountable by Meliougian law in Meliougian courts. An investigation has been promised by Chancellor Andreas Mavromichalis, and any persons found guilty electoral wrongdoing will be punished for election fraud, among other charges. Furthermore, His Serene Majesty's Government supports the right by protesters to gather, but such rights are void when it devolves into a riot, as is what happened on Theotokis Square on December 8th. Our security forces acted professionally, and any claims to the contrary are absurd and biased. His Serene Majesty's Government advises that the Empire of Reutoa focus on its own affairs, as we do.

Signed,

Zacharias Xydakis
Minister of Foreign Affairs

Basileus Nikolaos VIII sat in his study, reading the papers that the Cabinet sent him. Cabinet minutes, reports from the Treasury, from the Economy Ministry, from Foreign Affairs, from the Interior and National Defense Ministries. And, as was the spirit of the times, they were all heavily redacted. "Your Serene Majesty, it is not the Monarch's place to concern himself with the minute details of the Government's work. These are simply summaries, nothing more." Chancellor Andreas Mavromichalis told him this when he first raised his concerns five years ago. Young Nikolaos didn't think much of it after the fact...but as time passed, he had a feeling that perhaps more was being kept from him than he'd like. He had been studying at the prestigious Angelos University, and so was in contact with students from different backgrounds, a far cry from the private tutoring education that his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather had received when they were his age. Cabinet didn't want to approve, but it was one of the few times where his father, Basileus Ioannis, had drawn a line with the Government: affairs concerning his son and heir would be controlled by the Palace. Of course, his father passed within the first year of Nikolaos's university education, and so accommodations had been made for him to continue his studies while serving as Monarch. All the same, Nikolaos had been exposed to a great many things, including an event that had soured relations between the Crown and the Chancellor...

Nikolaos stopped thinking about that incident. He would have time to avenge Zacharias, maybe, just maybe. But for now, his country was aflame. At this point, Mavromichalis's maneuvers were a well-established pattern, and Nikolaos had no doubt that the allegations of election fraud certainly had some ground. Did he believe that Mavromichalis was stupid enough to reverse the results that much? No, perhaps some underlings in the Election Commission got carried away in a hope to please the higher ups, which was the case for some court trials. But the genie was out of the bottle, and there was no going back. So, Nikolaos summoned Chancellor Andreas Mavromichalis to the Royal Palace, while outside of the Palace, protesters thronged the streets of the capital, with similar reports of peaceful protests gathering in other major cities. It was rumored that several ports were closed on the island nation as a result of workers going on strike...at least, that's what the rumors said.

173 Downey Street, Office of the Hashkinian Chancellor, Weselton
Chancellor Tony Bakker watched the evening news reports with disgust. The Kingdom of Meliougi was deliberately refusing to hold elections for its citizens, already killing one, and The Consuitional Monarchy of Hashkin is having none of that. "Miss Alydwich, have MacGregor on the line within the hour", Bakker said to his secatary. Don MacGregor was the nation's Secatary of Foreign Affairs, and one of Bakker most trusted advisors. When Miss Alydwich told Bakker that the the phone was ready, he whisked it to his ears and began his telling his plan before MacGregor said hello. "Listen, sir, Meliougi is a considerably powerful nation, and even though our relation were sour during WW2 and the Cold War, we have been rebuilding trade. Even though you think that Hashkin is some sort of beacon of freedom and democracy for miles to come, I think this is not our problem." Despite his demeanour, MacGregor was starting to get worried with Bakker grandiose sense of the country. Even though Bakker was here for a few years, he has already changed the Hashkinian Foreign Policy a great deal. "I know Donny, I know. It's just that the Meliougi Kingdom have violated their own consuition. Denying the people the ability to vote. In our consuition, it is both of our jobs to defend democracy, here and abroad." MacGregor sensed something in Bakker voice, his voice seemed to stutter a little at the end. That means one thing and one thing only, Bakker was getting ready to fight. Bakker's staff have known this for months now, and it almost cost them the midterms. Bakker wasn't giving up, and there was now one way this conversation could go. "Okay Tony, I'll try to whip something up tonight, but, we won't go full war on them ok?" And as he heard Tony agree, Donald MacGregor hung up the phone. Dammit, he thought, working on a Sunday.

Officials this may concern,

Hashkin has noticed that massive protest that has occurred in Theotokis Square this evening, and we hope that it can end peacefully and respectfully. Unfortunately, however, we are uncomfortable with the fact that your citizens have to go to such measures. Hashkinians all over the country, including Chancellor Tony Bakker himself, were appalled at the images on their television screens, and especially at the death of young Cassandra Eleftherias. So, as a representative of Hashkin, and the greater international community, we urge that Meliougi hold unbiased investigations in the incident and the recent elections, or Meliougi will face scrutiny from the world stage. Do not take this as a threat, nor a order, but as a suggestion.

Regards,

To: The Department of Foreign Affairs, The Constitutional Monarchy of Hashkin
From: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs

To Whom It May Concern,

His Serene Majesty's Government is aware of the gatherings. Per the Constitution of Meliougi, peaceful assembly is allowed, and we have elections every five years. The allegations of election fraud will be investigated by the Election Commission, per Chancellor Andreas Mavromichalis's promise to the God-fearing people of this Kingdom. The incident regarding Ms. Eletherias was an unfortunate incident, and the Ministry of the Interior is investigating the death of Ms. Eleftherias. His Serene Majesty's Government will not stand for foreign governments intervening in our affairs.

The Royal Palace, Iremipoli, Kingdom of Meliougi
December 10th, 2017

Basileus Nikolaos VIII sat in his receiving room, decked out in his uniform, medals, and orders befitting the Basileus of Meliougi. Chancellor Andreas Mavromichalis was slowly making his way, escorted by a liveried servant, and was announced. "Chancellor Mavromichalis, Your Serene Majesty." "Chancellor," Nikolaos stood and extended his ring hand. "Your Serene Majesty," the Chancellor slightly bowed and kissed Nikolaos's signet ring. "May I sit, Your Serene Majesty?" the elderly Chancellor asked, already preparing to sit down. "No, you may not. I am not happy Chancellor. Not. Happy." Nikolaos replied sternly, resuming his seat. "One person is dead, at least. I have no idea how many others may have been killed, injured, or arrested-" "Your Serene Majesty, you will remember your constitutional du-" Nikolaos pounded his fist on the table, shouting, "Remember your place, do not speak!" The Chancellor quieted down. He knew better than to upset the king. After all, one of the reasons the National Restoration Party had maintained control was through its control of the Crown. "Now, I'm well aware of my constitutional duties. That includes advising and warning you. I advise that you resign, for the good of the country, for the good of my people. And I warn you, as Sovereign, I will exercise my duty to dissolve Parliament and call for new elections, if you do not resign and fix what you've done wrong. Do you understand me?" Andreas straightened up, the resolve from his younger days firming up his spine. "I have the support of the Government. I see no reason to resign. And with respect, Your Serene Majesty, who will obey you? I am the Government. Never forget that."

Nikolaos waited for the Chancellor to finish speaking. Calmly, he pressed the buzzer to signal that the audience was over. In walked two Palace Guardsmen, seemingly to show the Chancellor out. "Chancellor Andreas Mavromichalis," Nikolaos cooly began, "by order of the Crown, by the divine rights vested in me, you will be placed under arrest, on suspicion of treason, conspiracy, and for violations against the Constitution of the Kingdom of Meliougi." The Chancellor didn't have a chance to shout his surprise before he was gruffly handled by the guardsmen. He would be taken to a cellar in the Palace, to be held at His Serene Majesty's pleasure. In an hour's time, the situation would begin to spiral further out of control, as the Basileus began to make a statement on the radio, the only medium in the Palace's total control. Of course, the Palace Guard had been notified ahead of time, and were on full alert, just in case.

This is Royal Radio, broadcasting from the Royal Palace in Iremipolis. His Serene Majesty will be making a statement.

Good afternoon. I speak to you today on a subject that is on a great many of your minds. Indeed, we hear the clamoring of our people, our loyal subjects, even as far as Unity Square, as it was known before 1950, when the Government, my grandfather's government, renamed it. We...I hold no illusion regarding the role my family has played in the events of the recent past. It is my intention, as the divinely appointed Basileus of Meliougi, to right the wrongs of the past, even at my own detriment. Today, I requested the resignation of Chancellor Andreas Mavromihcalis, as I had no confidence in the Government he had formed. Chancellor Mavromichalis refused my advice and my warning. And so, it is my monarchical duty to announce that I am executing my constitutional authority, and ordering the dissolution of this Parliament, and calling for new elections to take place. The Constitution mandates that these new elections will take place in six months time. Furthermore, on suspicion of treason and conspiracy, the Chancellor is under arrest. I call on this government to resign, and that a stewardship government of my choosing shall govern and administer the Kingdom of Meliougi in my name. God bless you all, and God save the Kingdom of Meliougi.

As the radio broadcast played out, it had a staggering effect. Protesters were emboldened, cheering and celebrating in the streets. In the capital, there was a struggle of sorts: some groups within the local law enforcement felt the obligation, if not moral, then one of duty, to support the Basileus. But the Basileus had underestimated his reach, and the impact of the civil unrest on the desire of the NRP and its supporters in government and the military to simply release their monopoly on power. Two hours after the statement was made, the Supreme Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Basileus Nikolaos - outside of their constitutional authority - and the Cabinet declared that not only would they not resign, but that a vote would be held in the Parliament that day to abolish the Monarchy, in direct violation of the Basileus's constitutional mandate dissolving the Parliament. Reports began to arise of clashes between protesters, police, and even members of the Armed Forces who had been called in to various locations to quell dissent. In front of the Royal Palace gathered thousands of supporters of the Crown, and in footage that would be immemorial, armored personnel carriers were making their way to the Palace. A fight was brewing, and it would only be a matter of time before the situation would destabilize completely.

Reutoan Embassy, Iremipoli
December 12th, 2017

Reutoan Ambassador Reinhard Kocher paced back and forth in his Office, the last few days had not been easy on him as well as the Reutoan Government, While Reutoan Foreign Policy preached Non-Intervention in the Domestic Affairs of Sovereign nations. Many within the Reutoan Reichstag openly called for a invasion be launched into Meliougi to aid the protesters and the Monarch of Meliougi. Who has jailed the Chancellor of Meliougi. As Mr. Kocher sat back down his secretary called him and informed him she was connecting him to the Line of the Office of the Chancellor.

"The Chancellor is calling me? hmm, very well. connect me through."

"Yes Sir."

"Hello Reinhard, how's the situation over there?'

"Hello your Excellency, well. As i'm sure you have seen on the News, Mr. Mavromichalis has been arrested by his Serene Majesty. The Parliament will be meeting soon to a vote of Abolishing the Monarchy. Thousands have shown up outside the Royal Palace to protest their support of their Basileus."

"So how are things at the Embassy, since our official statement was issued i was worried on your safety."

"I'm ok your Excellency, thank you for your concern. There have been some windows smashed by Pro-Restoration supporters but I'm positive that by Intelligence Reports that the Government payed some citizens to scare us."

"Should i send over Solders just in case? Since it seems like a Civil War between Restoration Supporters and Monarchists Loyalists seems likely now."

"No its Ok, listen. I need to sign off, i have some papers to look over."

"Very well Mr. Kocher, please inform of the situation every 5 hours."

"Yes Sir"

Iremipoli, Meliougi

In front of the Palace, a situation was developing. The soldiers that had been ordered to seize the Palace were confronted by those protesters supporting Basileus Nikolaos's actions against the NRP regime. Their orders were to force their way into the Palace and execute the Supreme Court's questionable arrest warrant of the Basileus. Meanwhile, in the Parliament, the entire opposition had walked out and refused to vote on the emergency measure to abolish the Monarchy. As was expected, the bill passed and was immediately signed by the Deputy Chancellor, Valentinos Katsaros. Of course, the news was met with even more vitriol in the streets. In front of the Palace, meanwhile, the standoff met a curious fate. The superiors of this particular company thought that the orders they were given would be carried out by this young company of recruits eagerly, so that they would prove themselves - after all, seizing the Palace would mean they would receive honors for years to come. But they underestimated one thing: these young soldiers had listened to Nikolaos's radio address, and unlike those soldiers in the old guard, they didn't have much of a reason to support the status quo. In a dramatic moment captured on cameras, the soldiers lowered their weapons as their commanding officer stepped towards the crowd, and bowed in the direction of the Palace. And that's when the fissures began to start. Throughout the day, as news spread, younger officers and soldiers, as well as younger officers in the police forces, began to conflict with some of the older, more prestigious units stationed within the capital.

In a shocking turn of events, a few days later, a number of protesters seized the city government offices, younger police officers initiated a firefight with the security forces in an attempt to seize one of the major police stations in the capital, and more protesters seized one of the central telecommunications for the opposition. It was at this point that the government was left reeling. In another major setback for the regime, the Meliougian Navy announced that they would no longer support the regime, and called for a restoration of peace and stability within the Kingdom, under the Basileus's terms from his radio address. The Army, on the other hand, held firm in its support of the NRP, but there was rumor of dissent within the officer corps. With the seizure of the telecommunications center, Basileus Nikolaos was able to make independent contact with those nations that had reached out to him in the past couple days.

Official Communique from His Serene Majesty

To: President Mike Lester of Tomure, Chancellor Leopold Schechterof Reutoa
From: His Serene Majesty, Basileus Nikolaos VIII of the Royal House of Angelos, Basileus of Meliougi

Dear Sirs,

I write to you to make a personal plea. I am forming a government in my name, the admirals are behind me, and more are refusing to recognize the authority of the National Restoration Party. However, the Army and the crooks and thieves who hold power refuse to resign, for the good of the country. Indeed, they have carried out an unconstitutional attack on the Monarchy, on the people, on the democratic system that my country embraced before the treachery of Dimitrios Theotokis and his Army supporters back in 1938. However, aside from the Palace Guard, I do not have direct control over any forces. Even some of the officers who have abandoned the government are beginning to try to claim power, and that is just the capital. I have no knowledge of what is occurring outside of the capital, outside of unsubstantiated reports arising from social media. I need help, to assert my authority over the capital and the kingdom. For nearly eighty years, Meliougi has been ruled by a central authority, and now that is gone or on the way out. I want to reestablish Meliougi as a truly constitutional monarchy, but in order to do that, I need to be able to serve as a transitional authority. I am asking for your support, without which, my kingdom will be split. I look forward to your response...God preserve us all.

Sincerely,

His Serene Majesty
Nikolaos VIII
Basileus of Meliougi

Ambassador Hunt was about to send a status report to the Department of Foreign Affairs back in Calerus when he heard the news that a potential split in the military ranks was imminent.
"Ethan!" exclaimed Walter Grissom, the grey-haired facility manager and head of security as he burst through the door only to suddenly come to a halt.
"I know, Walt," Hunt replied. "Sheila just called and told me."
"Sheila?"
"Sheila Morrison. From ANN News. Old college friend of mine." Hunt stood up, stretching his legs after half an hour spent crouched over the encrypted comms terminal. "She's been holed up in a building overlooking the palace square since last night. Told me she thinks all hell is about to break loose."
"We need to get the service staff out. Now," Grissom said emphatically.
"Agreed," sighed Hunt. "The DFA jet will land at the main airport in an hour and a half. We just have to hope that we can get out of the city without getting shot or something."
"What about the administrative staff?"
"Any admin staff who want out can go, as long as we've got room. But it's the service folks I'm worried about right now."
"Got it. I'll prep the SUVs."

Parliament House, Ethrican City, Dequarmi

Chancellor-Minister Louis Hermainsch had been waiting anxiously on his chair for a good 30 minutes now. A growing fear of instability had been rising in concern of an unlikely location: the Kingdom of Meliougi.

Of course, the new Basileus had been particularly better than the last, and the corrupt regime of the NRP had already been losing support, but the very fact that the regime was slowly falling surprised Dequarmi’s public and government.

Finally, a knock sounded at the door. The Chancellor-Minister put down the coffee he was sipping and said “Come in.”

Military Premier Adler Schelidviest went first. “The Espionage Divisions and other informative sources report a significant uprising and subsequent civil war between the monarchy and the NRP. The Basileus’ forces have seized control of one of their telecommunications offices; they’re asking for help.”

Minister of Diplomacy, Hans Jehpeiter, went next. “However, military deployment to Melouigi would be most unwise both politically and internationally, and puts many of Dequarmi’s assets at risk.”

“But then, if the monarchy does indeed win, we would have access to a good trading partner and all-around ally.” the Chancellor-Minister conceded. “Don’t worry, though, both of you, I have a plan. I will consult Parliament tomorrow,”

OOC: Sorry I wasn’t able to completely do the post; was delayed by a hurried flight. Was it a good start?

Iremipoli, Meliougi

The coastal capital of the Kingdom had experienced heavy fighting between soldiers loyal to the NRP, some rogue military and security forces that were attempting to take advantage of the chaos to either seize power or wealth, and then, a few days after the fighting broke out, contingents of Navy personnel who had finally docked in the Iremipoli ports and other forces who had sworn loyalty to the Basileus and his government, made up of a mixture of different politicians with different ideologies. In reality, his government was simply a transitional authority, a unity government should they seize the upper hand and assert their control over the Kingdom. With the seizure of the telecommunications center, they were able to send out their message of a new Meliougi, loyal to the ideals of democracy and monarchy, as well as to establish contact with other insurrectionists around the country. In a matter of days, the capital fell into the hands of what was now being dubbed the Coalition for Democratic Unity, with the aid promised by Reutoa and Tomure able to arrive unmolested. Meanwhile, the National Restoration Party's leaders and its loyalists had all but vacated the capital, with reports suggesting that they were fleeing east, to the city of Nafpapagou. Nikolaos VIII's CDU Chancellor, a self-labelled moderate named Andreus Scalas, ordered the Navy to split up, with the more elite ships and contingents remaining within the capital to assist in keeping order, while the rest of the Meliougian fleet would make its way to Nafpapagou to blockade the port there and harass the NRP loyalists located around the city. Meanwhile, both Coalition forces and NRP forces were beginning to organize for battles and sieges that would occur, with Deputy Chancellor Valentinos Katsaros declaring that his government would not surrender, nor would they recognize the demands of "the pretenders to the government of Meliougi."

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, both factions were working to secure the support of a critical member of Meliougian society: the Meliougian Orthodox Patriarch, Theophilus III, and the Holy Synod. To have the MOC on either side could help sway support among the more religious - not necessarily nationalist or conservative - citizens of Meliougi. The CDU's agents, of course, pointed to the fact that they were supported by the Basileus Nikolaos, a man who, as the Orthodox Church has consistently declared, was anointed by God, and therefore, they had an obligation to God and the Basileus to support them and their claim to sovereignty. Meanwhile, the NRP's agents worked to inform members of the Holy Synod that the man who was supposedly anointed by God was, in truth, a sinful creature, subject to one of the gravest sins in the Church. It was known that, a few years ago, Nikolaos had made the acquaintance of another student at university, a young man by the name of Zacharias Arhondonis. Everyone had assumed that they were close friends: they shared the same major, they were seen spending time together with friends and at bars around the capital. But what wasn't public knowledge was that an agent from the Ministry of the Interior's infamous Third Department, essentially Meliougi's secret police, discovered that the two shared a more...intimate relationship. Of course, same-sex relationships had long been outlawed by Meliougi - not a product of the NRP regime, but anti-sodomy laws had been on the books since the 1600s - but under the NRP, such relationships were heavily persecuted. While the sentence itself wasn't death, in most cases, it resulted in those accused even on shoddy grounds meeting a violent end outside of the judicial system. All anyone knows is that ten months after Nikolaos and Zacharias had met, Zacharias was found horrifically beaten and maimed, dead in an alley...and Nikolaos resigned, depressed. And such was the beginning of the row between Nikolaos VIII, the serene and heavenly anointed Basileus of Meliougi, Head of the Royal House of Angelos, and closeted homosexual, and the regime of Chancellor Andreas Mavromichalis and his National Restoration Party. No one would know where the Church would lean...

Official Communique from His Serene Majesty's Government

To: Jerry Grigecth, Minister of Defense of Tomure
From: Andreus Scalas, Chancellor of the Kingdom of Meliougi

Dear Sir,

His Serene Majesty, his legitimate Government, and the people of Meliougi thank the nation of Tomure for its offer of assistance. We request that you direct the soldiers you are sending to the capital of Iremipoli to assist in peacekeeping operations while the Government attempts to maintain order and organize a strategy for the dissolution of the illegitimate despots who, by all accounts, have fled east to the port city of Nafpapagou. Our first priority is to ensure that, should we launch an offensive, we do not leave the capital open to insurrection from NRP loyalists and opportunists. Once we are certain that we may strike the NRP, we will discuss with your man on the ground the means through which we shall force the pretenders to accept terms of surrender.

Sincerely,

Andreus Scalas
Chancellor of the Kingdom of Meliougi

OOC: Thanks, Meliougi!
——
Parliamentary Chamber, Parliament House, Ethrican City, Dequarmi

Parliament was abuzz with debate even before the Chancellor-Minister came in. Bickering about other pieces of legislation filled the room, as all the MPs put up a spittle-flying flurry of words and approvals and dissaprovals.

Finally, the huge verbal fight was halted by the Chancellor-Minister. “Silence, you loud clamshells!”

And so they did, to the Chancellor-Minister’s relief. “As you all know, a civil conflict is ongoing in the Kingdom of Meliougi between the monarchy, now the Coalition of Democratic Unity, the previous National Restorationist Party’s regime, and all those factions attempting to seize power by themselves. Any suggestions on how to deal with the situation?”

A short murmuring ensued, ending after the MP of the Federal State of Sehtraisch answered:

“I know the complete national and inernational condemnation that will ensue if we declare war, and the unrest it would cause if we do nothing. I suggest that further and closer monitoring be taken, send more specialized Espionage Division agents, and begin advanced reconassiance drones, painted with radar-deflecting paint and flying at very high altitudes, to spy on the situation on both sides, all while keeping in the shadows.”

Many people in Parliament agreed with this solution, and so ordered Military Premier Adler Schelidviest to “mobilize the units required for this operations, and send them in ASAP.”

——

Espionage Division Headquarters, Tehrmainkov, Dequarmi

The building was a hive of activity. Bureaucrats carrying paper were everywhere, officers were walking down the hallway, and armed guards stood at doors.

Andrew Olrschmitt was sitting at his desk, signing papers and writing e-mails. As a lieutenant-colonel, this was his job, which decreased in action even more because he was just an Espionage Agent. However, today he recieved a peculiar e-mail: from the Parliamentary Telecommunications Office.

It read:

LieutCol. Olrschmitt,

Your accomplishments in the Trefuschian Civil War and previous activities in the Dequarman-Maxtopian War have gained the attention of us here in Parliament. As such, we are giving you command of a very important mission, something which you have probably heard of: the Meliougian Political Crisis.

Your objective is to secretly put both sides of the Meliougian Crisis under surveillance. As such, like the previous operations put under your authority, this operation will be HEAVILY CLASSIFIED.

Yours truly,
Parliamentary Telecommunications Office
Government of the United Federal States of Dequarmi

“This seems interesting.” he muttered to himself.

And so he packed his bags, readied his suits, brought his mobile WiFi, and was transported in secret, specifically to a forest in the middle of the Meliougian countryside.
