Scrolling ad in middle of screen.

Postby Impaled Nazarene » Sat Dec 09, 2017 2:14 am

Recently in my usage of nationstates not only have I seen ads for the first time in years I have this random add that scrolls with me down the middle of the screen. This is not one of those pop up or slide out ads but a sidebar ad that moved to the middle of my screen. It even has the remove ads link that takes me to the NS store.
I'll screenshot it next time it occurs.

I've noticed this too every once in a while - it seems as if the banner ad gets a fixed positioning and then sits at the top of the display no matter how you scroll. At the same time, whenever this happens the bottom bar (with the image links to Max Barry's books) also fixes to the bottom of the display.

The page I've repeatedly noticed it on is that of the region The East Pacific. On that page, it'll occasionally go back to normal when I reload the page, but around 2/3 times I load the page the bug appears.

Anyone see this who isn't using NS++?

Let me experiment, by turning off my adblock.

I don't use NS++ and I don't have the same problem.

Ah, very likely. Should've remembered to check without NS++ when I saw it.

It appears that this is an NS++ problem, not a problem with the site.
Refresh without NS++, ad is not there. Refresh with NS++, ad is there.

The signal flare hath summoned me.

This is presumably a bug with the code that was added to NS++ to retain the ad which the site shows under the RMB while reversing the structure of the RMB display. I see that that code currently usually doesn't do anything with the ad most of the time. I'll try and discuss what [violet] would like the ad to do at the earliest opportunity.

In the long run I'd like to replace this NS++ feature (unlimited scrolling RMB) with an equivalent, optional, NS feature. In the short term however, I don't want users to get a bad experience in TEP or the Internationale. Watch this space.

The bottom ad is usually horizontal, but I have noticed that vertical ads are appearing more often. The ad in the screenshots are vertical. My guess Elu is that NS++ is assuming the ad will be horizontal.
