Vladimir Putin running for Russian President (again)

Postby Pilack » Wed Dec 06, 2017 10:17 am

This article was published by the New York Times after Putin officially announced his candidacy today for what will likely be his fourth term as President of Russia: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/06/world/europe/russia-vladimir-putin-president.html

MOSCOW — President Vladimir V. Putin announced on Wednesday that he would seek a fourth term as president of Russia in a vote set for March, an election he is expected to win handily.

He made the long-anticipated announcement on the floor of a GAZ Group vehicle factory in the northern industrial city of Nizhny Novgorod, delivering a brief statement in the seemingly spontaneous yet carefully choreographed manner he favors for major public appearances.

It began with a factory worker climbing onto the stage set up for the occasion to ask Mr. Putin if he would run for re-election, saying, “Today in this hall everybody, without exception, supports you. Give us a gift, announce your decision!”

With the hall erupting in cheers of “Gaz supports you!” Mr. Putin said he would run. “There is no better space and no better occasion to announce this,” he said. “I will run for the presidency of the Russian Federation.”

What do you think of this, NSG?

Why does it matter? He's too powerful even when not president. He's gonna win one way or another

Woohoo, big shocker. Not.

I wonder if his placeholder for 2024-2030 has already been decided upon.

At this point, he should just hold a referendum to decide if he should be Tzar or not. Might as well, he has almost unanimous popularity, incredible experience, and who's gonna stop him? Russians even care about democracy anymore?

I'd love to see the return to Russian monarchy.

Maybe his heir can be someone like Peter the Great and actually do good for the Empire.

I don't even know if the surviving Romanovs would be okay with that, unless Putin manages to get them under his wing.

Well I don't know, maybe its because Russia is a semi presidential republic maybe or maybe its because we got rid of the tsar more than a 100 years ago , you chose your answer.

Committing to either would only be counterproductive, as the strategy of paying lip service to everything from Stalinist nostalgia to past Imperial figures (never mind the contradiction) to an acted-out democracy is working very nicely indeed. There is little to suggest any position, whether religious fundamentalism, communism or royalism is sincerely held by the Kremlin.

A fully automated post-scarcity utopia guarded by an infinite armada of artificially intelligent warships, Cquuzal is opulent beyond reason, with each citizen living as a member of the upper class would in other polities, only working if they desire it and mostly pursuing various entertainments. Art deco style is ubiquitous, as is reality television of wars in primitive faraway lands. Instilled with the Immortal Emperor's sense of superiority, Cquuzalans see less advanced civilisations as backwards and barbaric, each new colonial acquisition and tributary state met with languid, distracted acclaim from the populace.

Not that the Russian elections are considered free anyway. This news don't surprise me, plus Putin has very high rates of approval so why wouldn't he run.
