“The price of greatness is responsibility.”

Winston Churchill

Politics. What a mess. However, in Britain, even the largest mess is of the most refined degree. The year is 2017, with the Labour Party’s rise to dominance within Parliament and the Prime Minister’s residence pleasantly surprising citizens throughout the United Kingdom. However, Prime Minister Jordan Bluestein’s rise to power wasn’t without consequences. Conservatives are plotting his political demise behind the scenes, hoping for a serious blunder by Labour at every turn.

The break from RL is June 23rd, 2016(the Brexit referendum date). "The Brexit referendum” happened on June 23rd, 2016. In a not so surprising result, the Remain campaign won by a score of 53% to 47%. A close referendum, but it was enough to be a solid win for remain. Still, supporting went down 14% from the 67% victory that remain scored in 1975, and it was clear that further European integration was not on the table for the United Kingdom, meaning that the chances of a multi-speed Europe remained highly likely. The turmoil the remain results brought the major political parties, however, were stunning.

Nearly 60% of Conservative Party voters from 2017 were supporters of Brexit, and the guns were out for David Cameron. On 30th of June, Boris Johnson launched a leadership challenge against the Prime Minister, and on July 30th, Boris Johnson was voted as the new Leader of the Conservative Party. With the party fully in turmoil, he appointed a number of Brexit supporters to the cabinet, though he kept remainers like George Osborne as the Chancellor and Theresa May as Home Secretary. His cabinet, however, was increasingly undisciplined. He lost a budget vote in October of 2016, therefore forcing an election. He led a divided Conservative Party, that was tearing itself apart over Brexit. Meanwhile, UKIP was gaining, and Labour was surging under new leadership in Jordan Bluestein, who had seriously resurrected Old Labour.

The election was called for on 8th of December, 2016. With a tough campaign, the divided Conservative Party was not able to defend its majority, and Bluestein, in a wave, swept into power. With the Liberal Democrats only winning 15 seats, Tim Farron resigned, and the whole leadership of the Conservative Party resigned, bringing the opportunity for them to have a new party leader, who would serve as the first Conservative Leader of the Opposition since 2010, when David Cameron served in the role facing Gordon Brown.

8th December 2016 Election Result - 650 total seats(326 seats needed for majority)

Labour- 330 seats(Majority Government)
Conservatives- 225 seats(Official Opposition)
Scottish National Party- 45 seats
Liberal Democrats- 15 seats
Plaid Cymru- 6 seats
Green Party of England & Wales- 3 seats
UKIP- 8 seats
Democratic Unionist Party- 10 seats
Sinn Fein- 8 seats(but Sinn Fein does not take their seats in Parliament)

Which gives Labour a majority of 10, or a working majority of 18.

Success for some is on the way, the fall of prominents is eminent. Politics is what you make of it. Join the system, whether you be a shrewd MP, a caring mayor, an intellectual pundit, a prolific journalist, an outspoken protestor, or a concerned citizen.

The Queen’s land is calling.

Rules

1. OP is God here - listen to his commandments. Listen to CO-OPs too.
2. No RL characters
3. No flawless characters. Most of the time, our leaders are society’s most flawed. Keep it real.
4. Respect your fellow players. ‘Nuff said - read site rules, no flaming, trolling, etc.
5. PG-13 - no explicit sexual references, some language is permitted but use sparingly.
6. No spite characters. Just because you might hate Tories or Lib Dems, doesn’t mean you create awful characters mocking them. You get the drift.
7. Keep OOC comments out of IC and no metagaming.
8. No research in closed situations - like debates, Parliamentary talks, etc. Do the research before.
Post at least once a week. Warn us if you can’t.
Have fun! Because that’s what politics is about, am I right?

NS Nation Name: Order of Maesters
Character Name: Valerie Elizabeth Diane Brennan (nee. Clarke)
Character Gender: Female
Character Age: 51
Character Height: 5'3
Character Weight: 130 llbs
Character Position/Role/Job: Leader of the Conservative Party, Leader of the Opposition, MP for Beckenham

Character Constituency of Origin: Beckenham
Character Constituency of Residence: Beckenham
Character Party Affiliation: Conservative Party
Main Strengths: Witty, dry sense of humour, intelligent, experienced, well known, reliable, moderate
Main Weaknesses: Establishment, wealthy, moderate, long record
Biography: Born in Edinburgh in 1966, Valerie Clarke was the third child of Marion Clarke and her husband, Sir Richard Clarke, a playwright and author. Valerie was the only suriving child between the two, as her two elder siblings both died in childbirth. Valerie moved to London at the young age of 3, and grew up in the City of London, where her father's main occupation drew him away for long periods of time. Her mother, often ill, took care of her for much of her youth. Hardworking and ambitious, Valerie worked her way through school, and eventually graduated from Oxford with a graduated in 1988 with a first-class honours BA degree. While at Oxford, she became involved with the local Conservative association, and met Peter Brennan, an irish immigrant who had become a prominent member of the association. The two married in 1990, and had one child, Edith, who was born in 1993.

In 1992, a heavily pregnant Valerie campaigned hard for John Major, and her local Tory candidate. While the election was close, Valerie's candidate of choice was elected, and she became his Parliamentary aide. Working in Parliament, she made several good friends and networked within the Party. When it became clear that the Tories would lose in 1997, she stuck with the Party, and John Major. She slowly became a member of the moderate, modernized, one-nation Tory faction that supported a centrist policy platform. In 1997, she was placed as a candidate in the constituency of Islington North, which she lost. She later was accepted as Tory candidate in 2001 for Beckenham. As a prominent, moderate, woman from London, she was fast tracked into the Shadow Cabinet, becoming Shadow Chief Secretary of the Treasury (2001-2003), and then Shadow Secretary of Culture, Media and Sport (2003-2005). After the Tories defeat in 2005, she was promoted once more to the front bench, and served as Shadow Transport Secretary (2005-2006) and Shadow Trade Secretary (2006-2010).

While in the Shadow Cabinet, Valerie was noted as a critic of the hard right of the Conservative Party, as well as an able performer in the House. With the election of the Conservatives in 2010, Valerie was given a surprise promotion to Foreign Secretary (2010-2012). She oversaw a rehabilitation of Britain's image after the Iraq War, and was given high marks for her actions. However, despite this, she came into conflict with the increasingly right wing movement of the Conservative Government, especially its hard nosed, and out of touch economic policies. She caused a stir when, in 2012, she resigned in protest over this policy, returning to the back benches and becoming a vocal critic of the Government. After the 2017 defeat of the Government, Valerie was elected to the Conservative Leadership on a platform of moderation, modernization, and re connection with voters.

Character Constituency of Origin: Blackburn
Character Constituency of Residence: Cambridge
Character Party Affiliation: Labour
Main Strengths: Charismatic, Passionate
Main Weaknesses: Anti-Establishment, People hate him for being a Socialist, Has health problems

Biography:

Born to two factory-workers in Blackburn, Jordan Bluestein always understood living in poverty. His stomach was frequently empty, and his schooling was poor; he was a horrendous maths student, and teachers didn’t focus on him because of the gargantuan class sizes. However, he was inspired by his civics teacher in Year 9. At 16, he dropped out of school to assist his father in the manufacturing industry. However, he soon became a passionate anti-war activist, as well as a trade union representative. By the age of 18, he decided he wanted to continue his education. He had strengthened himself in maths, and was an exemplary English student. This was also the time when his socialist views were strengthening.

He applied to Cambridge University, achieved a scholarship, and was, miraculously, accepted into university, where he studied political science. However, people didn’t see him as an excellent student while at university. He joined the Labour Party Wing at university, but was seen as way more of a leftist than most of its leaders.

He ran for councilor in a small district, and soon returned to Cambridge. Eventually, rising in the ranks, he ran for MP for Cambridge. He won, by a small majority. He was very disappointed when “New Labour” came about; he saw it as a “Conservative infiltration of the Party.” However, instead of leaving the party, he decided to try and reform it into more of a leftist party. No one really took him seriously, but eventually, he rose to the leadership, due to a really popular image in front of the public, although the press suspects that party officials keep trying to get him out at every turn. When the General Election came around, he won by a landslide, although this was in part due to the Tories' unpopular decisions while in office. His position as prime minister is still treated with skepticism by the media.

Could we have a seat breakdown?

I don't need constituency by constituency, but just how many seats each party has in Westminister, and the date of the last election, would do wonders in understanding what kind of universe that's being created here. I'm assuming the Scottish Parliament is the same as RL(unless told otherwise).

Also, where's the break from RL? I know there's no Brexit, but did the Scottish referendum happen in 2014?

You can at least try to be pleasant Dentali.
The Washington RP is interesting and has been going on for a long time. Some players want to try a Parliamentary version. It really should not be that big of a deal.

Also, OP, is there an app to apply as CO-OP? I would like to if needed.
