[SUBMITTED] Off-Kilter

Postby Shwe Tu Colony » Fri Oct 27, 2017 11:22 pm

Underlined phrases are my own comments & notes, Orange words (bold in drafts three & prior) are changes from the previous draft, & this issue has a few references to the video game OFF with some mild inspiration from Flowers for Algernon.

Most recent suggestion:

Title: Off-Kilter
Validity: Nations with low public healthcare
Description: Game creator Immortal Body recently revealed that, due to the sorry state of the healthcare system, the only solace he could find for his mental illness was through creating his widely-acclaimed game, ON. A variety of persons, including Body himself, have come to you to offer just what this means to the country.

Option 1:"Well, it's rather clear to me, @@LEADER@@," the game's creator states as he pulls out an excessively long list that droops to the floor. "See this list? It's every mistake your completely worthless healthcare system has done. Neglecting me, not giving me the right dosage, not cleaning my restroom — the offenses just go on and on, and this is before I even get into the mistakes they've done with others. @@LEADER@@, if you want our nation's people to live well, you absolutely must increase funding for public health, no matter the cost!" (this last line could definitely be better)
Fallout 1: mental health funding has skyrocketed Too bland, but I don't want to rip off of the other mental health things like "anyone who so much as frowns is assigned a psychiatrist."

(must permit private industry)
Option 2:"Seems like a waste of tax money to me," claims @@RANDOMNAME@@, the infamously greedy (and obese) CEO of Sugar Games. "Although, I do think that I — er... we, could certainly benefit from what Body claims. If you could maybe help those o' us in the games industry get our hands on inspiration like ol' Body, we could create wondrous things with their help, which means more cash for me and more tax for you!" Looking around, he comes in just a little closer to whisper into your ear. "Wouldn't even cost anyone a dime. These folks are too stupid to know when they're being scammed."
Fallout 2: game company cubicles have replaced asylums

(state-owned industry)
Option 3:"Bah! Don't listen to that fat cat," cries socialist politician @@RANDOMNAME@@, somehow pushing the CEO of Sugar Games out of the room despite the latter's huge weight. "If we let those bloody capitalists have their way, they'll be abusing our citizens for nothing but their own wallets. I propose that we the government should be the only ones trusted with them. We can create our own gaming company — owned by you, of course — and drive everyone out of business with the ingenuity of those like Body."
Fallout 3: anyone that talks to themselves is immediately abducted by the government

Option 4:"Now hold up just one moment!" yells out @@RANDOMNAME@@, a doctor at a local mental asylum and also Immortal Body's previous doctor. "I've had to deal with these accursed ill, and they've done me nothing but trouble, and what do I get from it? Well, some money, yes, but also needless amounts of stress! Now I'm the one needing a bloody psychologist! If you ask me, our nation would be better off if we executed everyone that was like Immortal Body."
Fallout 4: murder is legal if the victim wasn't sane enough to see it coming

Option 5:"Clearly nobody is approaching the true issue here!" claims @@RANDOMNAME@@, a literature professor & part-time video game critic at the Unviersity of Japhet. "For too long have video games been said to only be 'entertainment for simple-minded fools,' yet there is such rich detail in ON that I find such a sentiment to be ludicrous, false, flagrant! Consider the first area in the game..." As his rant continues, you eventually fall asleep, although @@HE@@ wakes you up, thankfully at the end of his tirade. "@@LEADER@@, you must add the analysis of video games alongside that of literature to enrich and supplement our students' education, for there is a massive treasure trove of knowledge and analysis for our students to find within their beloved games!"
Fallout 5: literature professors have discovered that games are not enjoyable when one has to write essays on them

Also, mistake acknowledged. Fixing draft.

Look at #217: Healthcare Services Underfunded, Claim Patients.

I would say that your draft is quite similar to the above issue in that they both focus on the low-quality healthcare of the nation in question.

The issue itself is a mentally ill person creating a game because of the system being underfunded, with only one option to increase funding for the healthcare system, although this is mostly mental health & not healthcare overal.

You just said that the person created the game because of the system being underfunded. And by 'system', I am assuming you mean healthcare. The consequences of an underfunded healthcare system do no matter when it comes to authoring an original draft, the actual issue of an underfunded healthcare system is what the draft is based around, which is something that has already been done.

Look, you don't have to listen to me, I am just sharing what I believe are the similarities between your draft and the issue I have mentioned so that you can see whether or not your draft has validity. I may be wrong, and that is okay. If I am, I will offer my criticisms so this draft can be further improved.

Hmm, alright then. I'll wait to see if anyone else thinks it's far too similar.

I'm not sure if this was or not, but just fyi, don't bump threads that are still on the first page. i'd comment, but I'm not sure it's legal, in which case you should let it sit back and wait for an IE to comment (some of them go through the threads backwards, including CWA, who posts by far the most)

Oh? I'm used to the National & International Roleplaying bumping system, which is once per day. I had not been aware that this was the system here.

National and International Roleplaying works that way bc the forums there are far more active, so that won’t be a problem there. Here, though, it can take a few days.

Fauxia is right: most editors and GI regulars read from the oldest unread thread first, to make sure we don't miss any gems. Bumping is counterproductive if you're seeking comment, as it moves you to the back of the queue.

Anyway, while I love Flowers For Algernon, I feel that the description manages to waffle for a very long time without presenting any clear dilemma. To break it down:

Description: Gamers and video game critics alike were surprised when it turned out that one of @@NATION@@'s most famous surrealist games, named ON, was revealed to have been created by a mentally unwell person known as Immortal Body. According to an interview with him, he created his game in order to find solace from the mental illness he was suffering from due to how useless the nation's healthcare system was with helping him with it. While he was able to fund his own recovery with his newfound fame, several groups have decided to come to you on the topic of the mentally ill.

Red: Just a story of some stuff that happened.
Blue: A hackneyed line that pretends this is an issue.

I'd suggest looking over the opening again, and finding the issue question at hand, then presenting a 2 to 4 line description that poses that issue question through the situation described.

The Flowers for Algernon influence is a minor one (which is the treatment of the disabled, so not quite mental illness), but as for the issue question, I'd say I'm trying to go for "what does mental illness in our nation imply?", although the last option deals more with the game itself. I'll be attempting to rewrite the intro, though.

Edit: Rewrote the intro, feels like I reworded the last sentence of the first two drafts & shortened the storyline. Doesn't feel like I really did resolve the "hackneyed line that pretends this is an issue" issue of this issue.

Sorry, yeah, that came across badly. The new description is MUCH better.

Decent enough issue. Will have a good read through the rest later.

Reminder bump.

Didn't really think that it came across badly, just thought it was another way of saying "rewrite this," although I interpreted it to not have much of a negative connotation to it.

Option 1- comma after “me”

Unless I say they do, in which case, there is a nonzero chance.

Option 1- instead of “better increase” why not “must increase”
