I'm no gearhead, but I'm pretty sure that if the metal in your car is not up to the tolerances the manufacturer thought it was, then it won't be a matter of your car breaking down, it'll be a matter of you dying in a crash you would otherwise have survived.

Correct. This has nothing to do with the mechanics of the vehicle, but the structural integrity of the body panels. Thankfully it doesn't seem to have affected the body frames themselves.

Yes and the problem was they fed them so much beer that when it came time to have little steels; they had fetal alcohol syndrome.

I wondered the same thing myself.

But that would make it expensive, and these guys were making things too cheaply.

More like fed abnormal alloys that weaken it after being massaged and pampered.

Damnit, I knew the Japanese would try to get back at the US for WWII!

It was a mistake letting them rebuild into an economic powerhouse!

But in honesty, looks like a bit of the well known greed sickness is occurring.

How often do you replace fenders? Fenders that don't rust in normal conditions?

I can't afford a car at present, but I'm the type to drive around with a banged up fender if need be. I only want to spend on what keeps the car running. Not on keeping it pretty. It is a huge liability, but necessary for transport. I've determined that a motorcycle is no longer an option for me. As such, I'd need the vehicle insured and everything else. But what would get priority- tires, and the regular maintenance to keep it having a long service life.

Fenders don't break down, so you don't replace them. You only learn about the weakness in a frontal impact - and then it's too late.

Yeah, because US automakers weren't responsible for 6 of the 10 biggest recalls ever, 3 of which were by GM...
