Beyond the Stars (OOC/Slice of Life/Fantasy/DEAD)

Postby Dragonarya » Sat Sep 30, 2017 7:19 pm

Beyond the Stars

"Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known."

- Carl Sagan

IC

Far, far to the north, beyond where the stars shine, lies the town of Caecus. This is not your ordinary town. Here, mythical creatures live freely, and are in fact more numerous than humans. Anyone of pure human blood is considered a true rarity.

In this far corner of the world, strange things happen. Magic runs rampant, wars tear the landscape, and three moons shine. Mythical creatures - elves, dwarves, even the rarer stuff like shape shifters and whatnot - travel from their homelands to live without being hunted by humankind.

Of course, this has strange side effects. Many times the residents must band together to stop something from within, like runaway curses or pyromaniac draconians. Sometimes there are much larger forces at work as well.

But for now, Caecus is normal.

Somewhat.

Maybe.

Image
This is a town known for many things, including a mythical population, wild bar brawls, and an unparalleled library on magic. The town is right next to a river that leads to the ocean, and sometimes the oceanic mermaids come pay the villagers a visit. There are also nearby mountains, where fearsome dragons guard their treasures. Under those mountains lies a minuscule dwarf mine. As for the village itself, there are all kinds of job opportunities, like bartender, librarian, farmer, even more exotic stuff like pyromancy and apothecary. These jobs are held by some peculiar people, so don't be surprised if your landlord is a warlock, or if the innkeeper is an orc in disguise.

Quests

What good is a mythical RP if you don't go on a quest every once in a while?

Current Quest:

Fire and Fortunes
The dragons are typically far from pleasant, but they don't attack villages at random... until now. Recently, dragon attacks are becoming increasingly common, the local peaceful dragons have gone missing, and just last week the first victim was killed from an encounter. Two days ago, two more lives were lost. Now you and your fellow villagers must quest to find the root of the problem and stop it, or you may very well be the next to die.

Character Roster

NPCs/OP Characters

Toromur - The leader of Caecus. He once was a high ranking nobleman with the woodland elves before he and his niece fled due to a feud gone too far. He now governs and protects this mythical town and practices pyromancy.

Teyna Rey - A half-magic daughter of a Warlock and a human. She is now an orphan, but she lives in the inn and is a sorcerer's apprentice. She excels in hexes, maledictions, and basic alchemy.

Captain Byrd - A werewolf who is more often drunk than not. He is a captain of what passes for a military in this small town and works under Captain Alyn. He's supposed to stay at his post in the watchtower, but he almost always manages to sneak off to the tavern. (Randomarya)

Ansral Alea'mitore - An overprotective father who disproves of minors in the tavern. He is around the same age as Toromur, and the two elves have known each other for some time. He only has one child, a child which he cares for very dearly after his wife's death. (Danceria)

Kenval Alea'mitore - The only child of Ansral. Thanks to a curse prior to his birth, he should technically be dead, but his good fortune has somehow kept him alive. However, he must be careful with his life, otherwise the curse will succeed and he will lose his soul. (Danceria)

Hazel - An autumn fairy who serves as a local healer. She has been in the business of magic for over a century and a half, longer than many mortals live at all. After her father's death, she has sworn never to let anyone she loves die again and is rather obsessive about healing others, refusing to let anyone go. (Randomarya)

Baldric - A spirit who helps manage the large library in town. He seems to enjoy thieving items, which should be relatively easy, considering he can pass through walls. He's probably the only guy in town who lives here but is also buried somewhere else. (Zilveren Berg)

Zainuddeen - An exotic trader who does not officially live here. This lizard-man comes from a place known to the locals as "The Great Desert", and occasionally will return to his homeland to find new wares for his caravan. He is also religious and prays to the god of the desert and the goddess of the moon. (The Clockwork Cities)

Jeremiah Milosevic - The town's local berserker. His staff allows him special berserker abilities, as well as disabilities. With every life he claims, his own slips away, until at last it will kill him. He still has a lot of time before that happens. (Iota Corp)

PCs

Melody - A mermaid who despises sharks and dwarves. She enjoys coming up to shore and trading hidden treasure she found in the ocean for shiny stuff. Her life mostly consists of finding things and exchanging them for more things.

Alyn - The Captain of the Guard. Despite her elvish heritage, she has no magic potential whatsoever. She can, however, "feel" magic, predict when and where spells will be cast, and has a heightened sixth sense.

Samuel Grimm - The village law enforcer. Although he himself is human, he has an axe that can harm and kill all mythical creatures, including vampires. He is not fond of magic but understands how it could be useful.

Rolt of Daleterry - A bright floramancer that tends to be viewed as a loser. He is a human, but has magical abilities and therefore is regarded here as "normal". He has a plant that he wears for no apparent reason, unless he enjoys being poked and prickled all the time by a living carnivorous carnation.

Carmilla Themis di Karnstein - A wealthy vampire who has lived in Caecus longer than most will live period. She was once a duchess but left her town after becoming a vampire. She and some other vampiric friends have settled here, meaning that everyone here must be careful. You never know who'll be next when a quad of vampires is hungry.

Tisiphone Halifax - A young magician who does minor healing magic. She has a variety of spells up her sleve, there's just no guarantee they're going to work at all. It's all just a work in progress, right?

Victoria Caterina Bastian - A strangely compassionate Fae who actually cares about what others go through. She left her realm to avoid her rank and nobility, but is still treated by her kind as a noble who deserves respect.

Samael, Adam - The town's local Reaper. Although he can't claim souls before their time, he can slightly delay their death or send wraiths to take them to the "other side". He was previously a living entity, but has now served the personification of Death for over a thousand years.

Briala Darmere di Karnstein - A pretty vampire who is rather kind for her species. She disapproves of the fact that she must suck blood to live, so she tries to feed from animals as much as possible.

Tull Undreil - The village's dwarf blacksmith. Despite his size, he can still pack a punch and can create enchanted armor that grants various effects. These effects, however, can be removed by any wizard worth his salt, even if not instantly.

Lissah - A naga who doesn't have any particular home or occupation. She doesn't have a lot of friends, but that is mainly because she is mostly a giant snake, making many fear her. Although, you have to wonder: if everyone is fine with vampires, werewolves, and even a reaper for crying out loud... why does the snake scare them?

Alv'ia - The local doomsday prophet. This banshee has been around for a couple millennia and knows more about humans than most mythical do, thanks to her relative ability to blend in. She has been foreseeing people's deaths seemingly since the dawn of time.

Charles Hawk - A werewolf with a dark past. He is currently the apprentice to Tull, helping him in both working at the forge and winning bar brawls. He is needed quite frequently in both, as it happens.

Undead/Immortal - 6
Werewolves - 2
Other - 5

Active Characters
Name: Alyn
Gender: female
Age: 253 (about 25)
Species: woodland elf
Appearance: she has dark hair, brown eyes, and medium toned skin.
Image
Personality: Alyn is very strong willed, and wants everything to fit in its place in the world. She is annoyed when a guard steps out of line or is found sleeping on the job, and won't hestitate to punish them for it. She enjoys peace and quiet, and loves taking long walks through the forest or hiking on the mountains.
Powers/Weaknesses: She is extremely talented with many weapons, but mostly uses a bow or a blade. She. can do slight healing enchantments, but can't heal major wounds or illnesses.
Likes/Dislikes: she likes woods, starlight, deer, salad, and weapons practices. She doesn't like insubordination, thieves, meat, oppressive rulers, or the color yellow.
Occupation: head of the town guard
Bio: Alyn grew up in the Wentlock forest, far to the east of Caelus. At a young age it was evident that, unlike the other elves, she had very little magical ability. Her parents did everything they could to try and "fix" Alyn's inability to do magic, but to no avail. Because of her weakness in magical ability Alyn trained with weapons starting at a very young age, slowly becoming an expert. Both of Alyn's parents were killed in a fight with invading mountain trolls, so she had to move in with her uncle, Toromur. Unfortunately, Toromur had a bit of a fued going on with some of the other elves, so he and Alyn were forced to flee. They ended up in Caelus, and after a few years of living there Toromur became the leader of the village, and Alyn was promoted to head of the guard for her skill. She is currently quite happy in Caelus, and does a good job of protecting the village.

Dormant Characters (will be activated when a quest they can participate in arises)
Name: Eliza
Gender: female
Age: 28
Species: magical human
Appearance:
Image
Personality: She doesn't really fit in with the other girls at Sanctuary, and has always been a bit of a rebel. She isn't as quiet and reserved as the other girls are, and is more adventurous and curious than any of them.
Powers/weaknesses: she has powerful life magic similar to the other girls in Sanctuary, and is relatively strong. She is quite vulnerable to earth related attacks, and for all her wanting to see the outside world, she knows very little about it.
Likes/dislikes: she absolutely loves dragons, adventure, water, sunrises, and books. She doesn't like the dark, cold temperatures, thieves, or blood.
Occupation: currently just a mage in Sanctuary.
Bio: Eliza was born to a family that had no traces of magic whatsoever, but when she turned two her abilities became noticeable. Her parents knew that she wouldn't survive in the magicless community they lived in, so they sent her to Sanctuary. Sanctuary was a place for girls like her, born into families with no magical abilities, as well as for young orphaned dragons. Eliza was raised by the inhabitants of Sanctuary, and studied life magic as well as how to care for and raise dragons. She excelled in both subjects, and her best subject was raising water dragons. When she was sixteen, she was assigned to raising the young water dragons brought to Sanctuary and has done that for the past twelve years. But will her lust for knowledge, adventure, and possibly even love pull her out of the only life she's ever known? There's a chance it will...

Name: Melody
Gender: female
Age: 73 (about 17)
Species: mermaid
Appearance: she has amber/gold eyes, pale skin, brown hair, and her tail is iridescent red and gold hues.
Image
Personality: Melody is a fun loving, kind soul, who loves collecting things and exploring ship wrecks. But don't let her gentleness fool you, she drives a hard bargain, though her prices are usually reasonable.
Powers/Weaknesses: she is a great swimmer, can stay out of water for almost and hour in a mild climate, and can breath both with lungs and gills. If she stays out of water in heat or longer than an hour, she could dry out.
Likes/Dislikes: she likes shells, collecting things, whales, nice creatures and all things shiny. She doesn't like sharks, fire, mud, dwarves, or sharp objects.
Occupation: trader
Bio: Melody grew up in the middle class, and lived near the coral palace when she was young. As she grew up she started exploring more, and once she met a group of nomadic merchants she knew that's what she wanted to do. She started collecting things she could sell, and two of her friends joined in. They started traveling to seaside villages and traded with the inhabitants, including the village of Caelus. They stop by Caelus frequently, sitting on the ends of the dock with nets full of things to trade.

Name: Hazel
Gender: female
Age: 187 (about 18)
Species: autumn fairy
Appearance:
Image
Personality: she is quiet, but extremely determined. She takes her job as a healer very seriously, and won't stop trying until her patient is healed. She is almost always optimistic, and has a certain charisma about her.
Powers/Weaknesses: She is extremely skilled in healing magic, and has memorized almost all plants with medicinal properties. She can't fly when her wings are wet, and her bones are hollow and thin, making them brittle. Like all other fairies, if she touches iron it burns her.
Likes/Dislikes: she likes children, leaves, mushrooms, and gold. She doesn't like poison, pyromancers, iron, or rain.
Occupation: healer
Bio: Hazel grew up in Caelus, her parents having moved there before she was born. Hazel was trained in healing magic from a young age, slowly mastering the skill. Her father died of a disease a few years before her training was complete, and she promised herself that she wouldn't let her inability to heal keep her from saving anyone ever again. Instead of completing her training that year, she moved to a nearby village as a healers apprentice for thirty two years, and once she was done with her training there she returned to Caelus. She became one of the best healers in the village, and hasn't left since.

Name: Baldric
Gender: Male
Age: 160, 30 at time of death
Species: Semi-Corporal spirit (Human)
Appearance:
Image

Personality: Lazy, self-interested, curious, joker
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Powers: Generally resistant to physical damage, can pass though normal walls and doors
Weaknesses: Very weak to magical or magical-like attacks, Strength dependent on proximity to anchor (a star pendant), if his anchor is damaged it will weaken him if it is destroyed it will banish him.
Likes: Learning new knowledge, Stealing things, Tricking others,
Dislikes: Being bossed around, Ghost jokes, Temples and Church's
Occupation: assistant at the local (magical) library
Bio: Baldric was born the son of a butcher and his handmaiden wife (he barely remembers their names or faces anymore), in some backwater town (that he can't remembers anymore). He lived his whole life in the village meeting his wife and marrying her after a short while. Unfortunately he would never see the wedding day as the new priest in town would prove to be a secret necromancer and Stole his soul to use as an eternal slave (you know the usual). Eventually the Necromancer died and he went from owner to owner for a few decades before coming into the possession of a traveling merchant who eventually sold him to the library in Caecus just to get rid of him were he remains to this day.

Name: Samuel Grimm

Gender: Male

Age: 95 (looks 32)

Species: Human from the Grimm Lineage

Appearance:
Image

Personality: Self-confident, upbeat, and sometimes reckless.

Alignment: Chaotic good

Powers/Weaknesses:
  • The Power Grimm: When a Grimm in near any kind of Monster, ghost, or witch, they gain enhanced strength and agility with the strength comparable to an orc or troll. They are much more durable than a normal human, but still get hurt,
and can still be killed. This power still comes at a price, it requires vast calorie intake and long periods of rest. So while they are stronger around monsters, it also drains their energy to be around hostile monsters for long. He had a magic ring made that allows him to live around the town's, peculiar, inhabitants without dropping dead of exhaustion, but he has to remove the ring to use his abilities.
  • The Grimm Axe: The Axe wielded by the original Grimm brothers, it is able to kill many supernatural entities that usually require special weapons, such as silver or wooden stakes. A Grimm also has telekinetic control over the axe, with the ability to make it fly back to the Grimms hand if thrown. If it is trapped in some sort of container, it cannot respond to the Grimm's commands.
  • Grimm Blood: Grimm blood is a non-lethal poison to monsters that can result in something resembling chemical burns.

Likes/Dislikes: He likes beer and food in general. Samuel is quite fond of his hat and has gotten into a few fights over it. He really dislikes magic, but begrudgingly acknowledges its usefulness.

Occupation: Enforcer under Alyn

Bio: Born to the Great Grandchild of Jacob Grimm, he was born into the monster hunting business. He was trained to kill indiscriminately, but eventually had some sense knocked into him by a scholarly orc (arguably a rare find). He was introduced to the more civilized supernatural world and quickly found his place. He moved to Caecus and was appointed an enforcer because of his ability to wrangle monsters with pretty high efficiency.

Random, we discussed this... Melody is accepted, but seriously. Iris doesn't seem like an elvish name.

For those of you reading this, to avoid confusion, please note I RP Toromur.

Hmm... as for sheriff, I don't know if that could work. He could be more of either a law enforcer under Iris (whose name might change) or a jailer. Also, tone down the first ability a smidge and do... something else with power two. Remove telekinesis completely, please. Otherwise he would be able to kill everyone in the village without lifting a finger.

As long as he isn't biased against mythical creatures, that sounds great.

So would some sort of Deputy work?

As for the first power, what if it just put him on par with like a troll or orc, and not any stronger?

I did a poor job of explaining the axe, I meant it only to be able to fly BACK into his hand and nothing else, he can't alter its flight mid-air or anything. I'm still willing to change this though if you feel it's too much. I just felt that among magic users, he needed something a little extra.

Oh, so kind of a Thor's Hammer type thing. That works, as long as he can't kill them with a single hit. And the new senses works too.
FYI Alyn doesn't have much of a magical advantage, so it's not unheard of to only use mortal items to fight immortals. As long as you have the skills, it's good.
As a form of deputy, yes, but I think you should call it Enforcer or something.

Sounds great.

yeah, the axe isn't like you touch it and you die, but some monsters like Vampires or werewolves usually require silver or a wooden stake to kill, with the Grimm Axe, if he lands a killing blow, they'll actually die instead of just getting back up.

I'll update the app soon

I think I fixed it, I hope it's okay.

Name: Carmilla Thelmis di Karnstein
Gender: Female
Age: 557 (physically 25)
Species: Vampire
Appearance: (the one in the red dress): http://irenhorrors.deviantart.com/art/C ... -658342186
Personality: She is seductive and street-smart, she sees no problems mixing business with pleasure and sometimes seduces her prey before drinking their blood. She does what she wants how she wants, and that is her philosophy of life. A ruthless and efficient killer when it comes to prey. Take what you can and give nothing back. However, unusually for a vampire she's not stone cold evil. In fact she considers herself neutral, she won't drink from children, usually prefers hunting bandits and assholes. She cares deeply for her two best friends and her people, they call each other family and while she is calculating and ruthless in battle she would die for them
Alignment: Chaotic neutral
Powers:
Dark Form: A more powerful vampiric form that vampires can take, usually while feeding or fighting.
Transmutation: Can teleport in a swirl of black mist. This also applies to their bat transformations and Dark Form transformations where they mist also. Only good for short distances.
Super speed: Exactly what it says on the tin
Near-invulnerability/Immortality: Can't die by normal weapons or most magic spells. However they are still weak to silver and holy items and garlic and things like that.
Bat Transformation: Can turn into a bat, the sun doesn't affect them as much when they're in this form.
Super strength:
Flight: Both in bat form and in normal form.

Weaknesses: Extremely pyrophobic, she's paralyzed with fear by fire, due to the accident that killed her parents. She's also extremely vulnerable to fire, sunlight is fatal to her as it is to all vampires, and extreme heat. Strong aversion to and repelled by garlic or garlic oil, can be burned by holy water (the only holy object that hurts vampires). She has to feed regularly because if a vampire doesn't feed for a long time, they go crazy with bloodlust and go into an uncontrollable frenzy that attacks everything in their path. Has the regular vampire weaknesses of silver, holy items, wooden stakes and things like that.
Likes/Dislikes:
Occupation: Former duchess of Karnstein, she is a very wealthy woman so she has no need to work. But sometimes she'll take odd jobs.
Bio: Carmilla Thelmis, Lady Thelmis was born in Karnstein, a region of Serbia home to many a magical creature, to the Duke and Duchess of Karnstein. She hardly saw her father and her mother was often busy as well. The young girl would often find solace exploring the bustling hub of her city, the beautiful courtesans and the famous painters, sometimes she would sneak books and candles from the churches. She was quite known for her exceptional art abilities, she was said to draw lifelike angels and portraits of the palazzos that she would see from her roof. Growing up, a renowned artist was actually one of her best friends. She drew whenever she could get her hands on paper, it was one of the few things that made her happy.
Her parents passed away in a fire that burned their summer home when she was nine, making her the rightful duchess of Karnstein. Her uncle Domingo, her mother's brother decided to move in to the ducal palace and be regent for his niece until she came to age, and also to protect her. Carmilla had happy memories of times under her uncle's care, because he was a warm and kind man, and was raised there along with her cousin Octavia whom was like a sister to her. Overjoyed at being reunited with her uncle, she lived with him happily until she was an adult woman. When she became of age, she became acting Duchess, and proved to be good at what she did. A capable and astute leader, she found time for herself and took lovers both male and female. However it was politically expedient for her to marry, so she chose a young nobleman from one of the outlying countries. That marriage resulted in the birth of her daughter, Demelza. Carmilla was a loving mother to her beloved daughter. One night, she was taking a carriage ride with her family, until they were set upon by three figures in black hoods. A fight ensued, and Carmilla immediately went to shield her toddler daughter, fighting off the men that came near her. She felt a sharp pain in her shoulder before she blacked out. Waking up, she found her husband and footman dead. Her child was alive, safely wrapped in her arms. Badly shaken, she returned to her home and immediately tried to find out what happened, and track down the ones responsible but she never did. She didn't think much of the wound on her shoulder until things started changing. She started getting paler, couldn't eat normal food without feeling ill, and had a strong aversion to light. She then started craving blood, which was the only thing she could actually consume. Reading the books in her parents' library, she deduced after two weeks that she was now a vampire. Far from being repulsed, she didn't mind her new nature and actually learned to work with it. She even raised her daughter like normal. When her daughter became a young woman, she begged her mother to turn her, as she didn't want to have to die and leave her. Carmilla refused at first, but not wanting to lose her only child, she relented. After her uncle's death she turned her cousin Octavia upon her request and they've been together ever since. Over the centuries they added a vampire from the far North, Vladislav into their family. He was at first their enemy, but eventually over a rocky path they became close. Carmilla is the head of her little clan, and is very protective of them. She hopes one day to become the most powerful vampire in the world and lead all of them She hasn't made very many human friends but she has some, and doesn't go out of her way to harm humans. After a few centuries she and her coven moved to Caecus and lived there for the last hundred and thirty years.

Really? How so? I thought they were basic vampiric powers.

Name: Rolt of Daleterry, Wherever-That-Is
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Species: Human
Appearance:
Image

Personality: Rolt is frail, cowardly, sardonic, and about as far from a hero as one could imagine. Not one to be written about in songs of glory, Rolt claims he's done a lot more than most people believe he actually has. He's quick to defend himself and prize his talents, but the fact is that he is far too skinny and rough-around-the-edges to be anyone that would ever save a town or win a girl. He does have a way with words, usually at others' expense, and these words commonly get him into trouble. In fact, that's a word that many would use to describe Rolt: Trouble.

Despite his lack of physical prowess and character, however, Rolt is quite bright. A floramancer by trade, he shares a special connection with plants and the natural world, and often enjoys its company more than that of people. For this reason, he tends to get along better with elves, centaurs, and other creatures of nature. If nature were to be threatened, Rolt would be the first to fight against its opponent, and while he loses (badly) in a battle of strength, Rolt is capable of great feats when using magic. With the help of Valus, the semi-sentient carnivorous plant he wears as a cloak, Rolt demonstrates exceptional aptitude in the manipulation of plants. He is quite studious in this regard, and often retreats to gardens and forests to learn more and relax.

All in all, Rolt is a good person trapped in what can only be described as a loser's body. His magic is powerful, and his spirit is promising, but for now, the only praise he would receive is "cute".

Alignment: Chaotic Good
Powers/Weaknesses:

Rolt is a Floramancer, and can use magical energy to tap into the life force of plants. Theoretically, he can do this with any plant, but in practice can only consistently perform when using species he is familiar with. Rolt can grow, manipulate, and commune with plants that are still living, using them for offensive and/or defensive purposes. He cannot conjure a plant out of nothing, and cannot guide a plant to do anything impossible. Using his power extensively drains him over time. he can recover life force from living plants around him, but it will cause the plants to wither and die, something that both limits his capacity to act and causes him emotional pain.

Rolt also has Valus, a carnivorous plant that wraps around his body like a cloak. Valus seems to have a mind of its own, and will pick and choose when it appears dormant vs. active. When not in a serious scenario, Valus will often taunt Rolt and ignore orders, or simply remain asleep. In combat, Valus can use its long body to whip around Rolt's Area of Engagement, slashing with its teeth as it looks for its next meal. It is a valuable plant to have during a fight, if not a nuisance passively.

Rolt is also a human, and faces all of the weaknesses humans suffer from biologically. In addition to this, Rolt himself is quite frail, and often is a coward f he does not think he can win. He suffers from occasional overconfidence, frequent exhaustion, and loses all magical potential if in a climate without plant life.

Likes/Dislikes: Likes: Plants, Flowers, Books, Being the Hero, Alcohol Dislikes: Bullies, Fire, Himself, People that hate nature,
Loud Children, and....Bugs.

Occupation: Gardener, Botanist, Floramancer, Mercenary, and occasional punching bag

Bio: True to its moniker, nobody is sure where Daleterry, Rolt's apparent birthplace, is. Rolt insists its "some number of miles away", but provides no other details on his early life. Supposedly Rolt served as the apprentice to a Earth Wizard for much of his childhood, carving out his specialty as a Floramancer. He then struck out on his own, performing "tons of great feats", before ending up in Caecus some time ago, broke and alone.
