North Korean World History

If anyone ever pays attention to North Korean propaganda, you normally notice that there's usually a disconnect between their interpretation of history and reality. Basically human civilization starts in Pyongyang, they're pretty responsible for pretty much everything ever invented, blah blah blah, that kind of bs. Eventually in the 19th century Korea is invaded by the evil Japanese than the even worse Americans until the mid-20th century when the glorious leader Kim Il-Sung repels the evil Americans without any help from any country whatsoever, and here we are in the present. I give they're historians points for creativity.

My question while they see themselves as the greatest civilization in human history and America as the land of hedonist devils, what is their history for the rest of the world? I'm mostly asking about Europe, Africa, and South Asia.

I tried asking before in the North Korea thread but I never got an answer from there so I decided to try starting a new discussion in case you're wondering.

Keeping out the outside world

The world according to Kim Jong-un's regime is defined as much by what's said, as it is by what isn't said.

Even now, in this connected age of Snapchat, tablets and smartphones — and even as the latter two are increasingly available in North Korea — the regime's ability to control the flow of information and curate content to suit its insular needs is an impressive and fearsome feat.

A crucial pillar of the effort remains old-fashioned propaganda, especially as South Korea and the U.S. step up efforts to reach North Koreans.

Posters, billboards and TV programs extol the nation's achievements, and music booms from loudspeakers in factories singing the praises of socialism.

News outlets are state organs and all books and music are approved by the regime.

Newspapers usually feature Kim Jong-un on the front page. Each is folded carefully so as to avoid creasing his photo. In one establishment CBC News visited during its trip to North Korea last May, newspapers were placed in a plastic bag and removed from the table to protect them from spills.

The message is constant: North Korea is superior and always under threat.

People on the streets of Pyongyang talk on cellphones, children use computers in extracurricular classes and flat-screen TVs are sold in the capital's only modern department store.

But what you can actually do with such equipment is strictly controlled by the state.

The degree of control is apparent the moment you land at the Sunan International Airport.

Information from the outside world is treated like a communicable disease: travel guides and books are closely examined and those deemed suspect are quarantined. Foreign magazines and newspapers are seized.

Our hard drives were searched — for foreign movies, I was told.

Foreign visitors are prohibited from moving around or connecting with North Koreans without "guides." Journalists are under even more scrutiny.

More than 100 of us were invited last spring to attend a rare ruling party congress in Pyongyang, the first in 36 years. We were kept well away from locals in the Yanggakdo hotel, which sits on an island in the middle of the Taedong River, within view of Pyongyang's more developed riverside. Our guides stayed in the same hotel to keep watch.

North Korean history is whatever Kim-Jong Un says it is. No real point in trying to decipher it because it isn't meant to be consistent. Anyone questioning it won't last very long so people just accept it.

Farnhamia didn't say you can't make fun of North Korea. People make fun of North Korea all the time - but again, NationStates General is a debate and discussion forum, not a spam forum. Your aforementioned "BEST KOREA NUMBAH ONE" post just doesn't contribute anything to the thread, plain and simple. For instance, if I make fun of how in the North Korean "histories," it's widely believed that Kim Il-Sung was a marksman at nine (or younger, I forget), and able to empty a magazine into a target and all of his shots were bullseyes, that would be still be contributing something constructive to the thread. What you did was far from that in that all you did was string together a bunch of words in a manner depicting East Asian stereotypes.

And you're right. Calling your post racist doesn't change anything about just how racist your statement was.

1. They see all nations (except maybe China) that are not North Korea as "bastards," particularly America and countries in Europe.

2. North Korea is supposedly the happiest nation to ever exist, according to its citizens.

3. The citizens themselves, when asked if Kim Jong Un or any Kim has flaws, the citizens will be confused by the question. They think that he's perfect compared to other world leaders.

4. Whenever a miracle (if any exist at all) occurs in North Korea, they thank the Kimmie regime. They don't thank the efforts of other country-citizens.

5. Imports from other countries (except China and maybe the US) are non-existent in NK. The NK shops literally put up beer bottles for display, along with the entire store contents.

6. Foreign television shows and internet in general are illegal in NK (punishable by death), so actual history of other nations isn't really possible to obtain. Brainwashing is omnipresent there.

7. Read the book named "Escape from Camp 14."

Yeah, history of other countries in NK is generally ludicrous. They shun themselves from foreign history and, when discussed, lash out at them through propaganda. I would expect the NKans to think that Kim Il-Sung created the universe and planet Earth.
