[Suggestion] #104 Text Recommendation

Postby Lancaster of Wessex » Sun Sep 24, 2017 2:51 pm

This is just more of a suggestion than a "fix," but it may bring this issue a bit more up-to-date:

Issue: 104

ORIGINAL:

“I think people need to realise what this really is: brainwashing!” retorts Zeke Broadside, a wealthy marketer. “I don’t want to hear all this flag-waving hogwash every time I go out for a walk. But when it comes to emergencies, I do agree that something should be done to warn everyone: we should send out messages on mandatory miniature radios that you can carry in your pocket. It could tell you things you need to know too, like what shoes to buy and such.”

Opinion: Suggesting a miniature radio now is a tad dated.

PROPOSED CHANGES/ADDITIONS (in red):

“I think people need to realize what this really is: brainwashing!” retorts Zeke Broadside, a wealthy marketer and mobile phone app developer. “I don’t want to hear all this flag-waving hogwash every time I go out for a walk. But when it comes to emergencies, I do agree that something should be done to warn everyone: my informative new app, which automatically broadcasts messages the instant you turn on your cell, should be installed on every phone in the nation. It could tell you things you need to know too, like what shoes to buy and such.”

Anyway, just an idea! :)

I think it's a good conversation to have, but Fauxia is right that it probably requires a separate thread because more than editor conversation will be needed.

Surprisingly, not everyone has mobile phones. Would you start forcing everyone to carry one, or just make the app compulsory for the majority of people who do have one?

Revision discussions are always good.

Realise with an "s" is the British spelling.

A fixed style might be better, but the NS policy has always been to go with the spelling of the author's home nation / stated preference. So about half the issues in the game carry American spellings, and half carry British ones. The main thing is that an issue should be consistent within itself/

retorts Zeke Broadside, a wealthy marketer and mobile phone app developer. “I don’t want to hear all this flag-waving hogwash every time I go out for a walk. That'd certainly be more up to date, but it's not as if mobile phones didn't exist when this issue was authored back in 2003. They already had considerable market penetration by this stage. There were no "apps" of course (well, there were applications on Windows, but not on phones), but it seems clear to me that the author knew mobile phones existed and still consciously chose a narrative including radios.

Having said that, it could be fun to ADD an option that specifically lampshades that:

"Miniature radios? What is this, 2003?" says App developer @@randomname@@.

And so on...
editors like linguistic ambiguity more than most people

Mobile phones back then were actually phones, as in, their main purpose was to call people or let people call you. Modern "mobile phones" are more like miniature computers that happen to include a phone function. It's not even their most-used function.

That makes it much easier to include new functionality, like announcements broadcast to everyone rather than to specific phone numbers (and that aren't blocked by already being in a call, etc.), that would conventionally better fit the role of a radio rather than a phone.

And before mobile phones we used to call them "programs", not "apps".

*nods* Understood on the "Z" versus "S" business, I'm Canadian, so, let's keep the "S" then. ;D

Certainly cell phones were around back in 2003 and many people had them, but this was pre-smartphone/pre-app age, hence my idea.

And the fact that some people don't have cell phones, as another poster posted, is true enough, but the vast majority of people DO have them now, so I think it'd still be a fairly "blanket" application, as much as making people carry the miniature radio. The idea of adding another option though would suffice as well though!
