Commute time?

Postby Trumptonium » Sat Sep 23, 2017 12:14 pm

To keep the forum non-politics fresh, here's a question for you all, what is the maximum time you would be prepared to commute to school/university/work before you decide it's not worth it and would have to move closer or let it go?

People's commutes - and their commute tolerability - vary widely. The Work Foundation in the UK has a category of "extreme commuters" which it describes at people whose total daily commute time amounts to three hours and over. At the moment, 11% of workers fit in this group, with London being the main destination of extreme commuting. Bristol, Coventry and Southampton are the main sources of extreme commuters to London, with each journey taking 102 minutes, 89 minutes and 80 minutes respectively. (to the train station alone) Similar extreme commuting exists in the US, where there is a known community of commuters who take the 85-minute Philly to NYC route. Of course some news article every year are dedicated to people who commute two, three or even four hours one-way just to work. Like Mrs. Marion who travels two and a half hours one-way to work.

The Work Foundation has noted that the average commute has risen considerably in the last 10 years, with the number of extreme commuters doubling as a proportion of workers. I personally know people who commute to London everyday using that last mentioned route, plus W&C line.

In my opinion, if someone is not caring for dependents and/or is single, long journeys are much more doable than their prejudiced opinion leads them to think. Sure, it's a gigantic waste of time as any other commute is, but it's fine and often financially worth it.

So what's the max commute you're prepared to make (by whatever transport necessary), or what wage rise would you need per extra 10 or so minutes to make the commute worthwhile?

I have a 25 minute commute by Train. Goes to 35 when you count walking to the station and walking to work.

I'm having 40 to 50 minutes commuting time right now (every morning and every afternoon, five day a week) as I have to take two different subway and a funicular to get to my preparatory class. Tis worth it, tho.

For me it depends on which campus I need to go to. If it's across the river, it can take me anywhere from 20 - 45mins, all depends on traffic/idiot drivers who cause accidents.
Other times it only takes me 10-15mins to get to the other campuses that are near my home.

In the past, I have driven 2hours one direction to get to work after a change in my work schedule/duties required me to drive that far, which prompted me to find employment else where and closer to home fairly quickly as there was no way I was going to continue to sit in a vehicle that long just for a paycheck.

I myself would draw the line at 1hour to get to work and that is pushing it.

Sixty minutes one way, which is also the contractual limit of my commute, if it's longer than an hour I get paid for any time over at normal rate.

20 sometimes 30 minutes with traffic. If there's no traffic I can make it in under 10 minutes.

Getting into Atlanta isn't to hard either I live about 25 minutes, no traffic, away from public transit

I live 4 minutes from my occupation.

I have a feeling this will change as I'm preparing to move soon.

My commute to college (High school for Americans) takes 30 minutes, but I am only willing to commute to places that is within 60 minutes.

Never heard of that before. Was your employer aware of your home address or did you change it during employment? Sounds like a disincentive to get non-locals to join.

It takes 5-10 minutes for me to get to my job and when I was in university it took around 15 minutes since I had to walk there. Guess I just got lucky?

I'm a telephone utility worker, my place of work is different every morning. The policy was actually designed to encourage the company to employ people from the entire service region, not just a bunch near the central DMA office.

45 minutes one way was the longest commute time I had. I'd say in general I'd start balking at anything 30 minutes one way now.

Wait, scratch that. Depends on the job.

My commute, that is travelling from the somewhat northern part of the island my city is on to the downtown core where my university is, takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on delays and traffic. Took about the same time when I was in high school and college, though they were in different areas of the city.

If I were working, I wouldn't ask for more even if the commute is particularly long - what I would ask is to start at a different time so as to avoid the ever-troublesome morning rush, if possible. Considering I can get practically anywhere in the city on $50 (what I currently spend per month for transit) or $85 (what I will pay once I stop being a student) per month, money is not much of an issue here. I don't plan on owning a car in the near future either, owing to my city's honestly fantastic public transit network (no matter how much shit we give the STM lol).

Still, I cannot ever imagine myself commuting over 2 hours to work. That's just insane. Unless it pays extraordinarily well.

It takes me almost exactly an hour to get to my school. After that, twenty minutes to my other school (Yes, I go to two different schools), then another hour to get back. Except for Friday, in which I simply go back home after finishing with the first school.

Anything less that 75 minutes is acceptable to me. My commutes (one-way) were about 45 min for high school, 60ish minutes for the university, and between 45 and 75 for most jobs I've had.

Just under two hours door to door using the fast train from the West Midlands to central London.

For those of you familiar with UK geography who are now thinking I'm mad... My wife is Midlands based, can generally work from home, and has no commuting costs/time at all; and a mortgage where we live is considerably more affordable than anywhere closer to London.
