R A R ET A L E N T S

Over the years, findings have led some to believe that humanity is really split into two groups. Those who have abilities that are deemed to be outside of the normal realm of human talent, and the rest of us. The former group are referred to in some circles as Extrahumans, and they have been a subject of intense speculation online for many years. However, not everyone believes that these people can be trusted. Extrahumans are distrusted at best by the general public, with people either not believing in their existence or looking at them as extremely dangerous. Even worse, they're hunted by the international Ministry of Extrahuman Affairs.

While the MEA fronts as being friendly to Extrahumans, its secret agenda is to lock them up for their own purposes, which aren't yet known. Survivors of the MEA have recounted being experimented on, but others have disappeared completely, never to be seen again. In 2016, a group of adult Extrahumans known as the Hand decided that they'd had enough. They fled to rural Thailand, and created an academy in the wilderness where they would protect the younger generation while training them to fight back. Soon after, they set out to search the entire world for every Extrahuman that they could find, with the goal of bringing them to the new academy.

That school would be known as Marena Sainō Academy.

Introduction

Welcome to Rare Talents, an RP where you'll play as a student at the new academy. Students come from all countries and walks of life, but the one thing uniting everyone is the fact that the students here are Extrahumans. Those who have been deemed to have abilities and talents that are impossible for the general population. If you're here, it's because the Hand got to you before the MEA did. Everyone here has also made a trade off. No contact with the outside, even with families and friends from the past, in exchange for safety and training.

The training here is a bit different from what you'd find in a normal school. While everyone does get a normal education, the students are also trained to fight back against the MEA and to rescue others like themselves. They also conduct research on their own abilities, with the goal of learning why they are who they are. The format of this thread is somewhat like a superhero RP but also takes heavily from the slice of life genre. If anything, I would say that this is a slice of life RP with superhero elements, not the other way around. However, the abilities probably will impact the interactions between characters, and their status as exiles from society will have an affect too.

While it's a slice of life RP, this thread won't be completely random. There will be open days, but there will also be special events such as holidays and training days, and also a few clashes with the MEA once everyone has a better handle on their abilities. During those training events and those battles with the authorities, you'll face increasingly difficult circumstances that are part of an overarching storyline. Exactly what happens in that story is up to you and your decisions.

The Academy

The academy is spread out over a complex of buildings in eastern Thailand, in the rural part of the country where there's few prying eyes and little control by the authorities. The large circular building in the middle is known as the Main Hall, and is the place where school wide meetings are conducted. It's also the most secure building in the school, in the event of an attack. The other important buildings are built in a circular pattern around that one. To the north, there's the dormitories. They're mainly made up of two condo style buildings, and each student gets their own apartment that can be decorated and furnished as they wish.

To the west, there's the smaller classrooms. Most of the classes take place at this part of the school, with only important events happening at the Main Hall. To the east, there's a large hangar that houses the vehicles used in the field. This is the starting point whenever the school sends people to bring in more students. It's also the first place that new students might see, because the airstrip in front of it is where they're often dropped off. To the south, there's other assorted buildings with various purposes, ranging from a couple of science labs to some storehouses that hold supplies. The staff dorms are also located here, and it's where the security staff are housed.

The entire academy is surrounded by jungle, making it hard to find, except by air.

Rules

• Yes this is an academy thread but the forum rules still stand. Don't make the mods ban academy RPs. You know who you are.
• OP has final say in things. Beyond that, Co-OPs do. Co-OPs can also accept or reject applications.
• Don't flame people.
• There might be disagreements, but don't let that affect the thread. Basically, don't let OOC bleed into IC.
• No super unbalanced characters. There will be strong ones, sure, but as a general rule, they're overpowered if they can do everything themselves without needing help or teamwork.
• If your character breaks the rules of the school by fighting with teachers, attacking other students, etc, they're going to be punished depending on the severity of their crime.
• Your characters are high school aged at the youngest, college aged at the maximum.

Ability: When a special 'Resonance bullet' which gives of a specific pitch, she will faint for a minute but will raise back in a new 'Demon Form' which increases her stamina, agility and accuracy. But even without this ability, she still has impeccable aim with an only 20% error of margin.
Weaknesses: However, due to the fact that it essentially just disables humanly 'limiters', once she wakes up she cannot take part in any more combat. Not only that, she is only adept in short to medium ranged combat, meaning that long and close ranged combat will literally be the death of her.
Personality: Warm but yet cold, she is a usually cold person due to how she sees her power more as a curse.
Biography: Born into the heart of London, which was also one of the major bases of the MEA, she came from a long line of Extrahumans since they have been found. When she was young, her mother disappeared, leaving only her father to care for her as they continually went on the run before going into hiding for almost an entire decade. At that time, MEA operations had been extensive, which meant that she learnt the value of silence, and that snitching was a double bladed sword that would fall on their necks. Eventually, the family would settle down in the areas of central Germany.

Eventually after a few more years, her father would join the hand, undertaking the task of helping to acquire the needed personnel for the academy. As such, she was constantly left to her own devices when one day some men came in and attempted to take her away. Their affiliation was not known, but what was known is that when her father came home, he found her covered in blood holding two guns, her mother's old guns. As it turns out, she had fired a resonance shot, which was a shot that produced a special pitch which would've knocked the user out but give them increased powers. Realizing the danger of leaving her alone, she was sent to the academy such that she could be under their protection. Now, she seeks the truth behind her powers and what she truly was once.

  As a result of Amelie's abnormal genetics, her muscular system is much denser and capable of much higher stresses and impulses acting upon them. In correlation, as are the rest of her body's cells and tissues, otherwise her bones would shatter like glass upon simple movements, and her organs and veins would collapse to mild exercise. She has a much better lifting strength and possibility for speed as well, as she's held a personal record for 797 kg Clean and Jerk, and 772 kg Snatch.

  Amelie knows quite well that she's strong, the only issue is that she has trouble regulating it. At time she may pulverize a cup of hot cocoa by accident, or in worse cases turn someone's bones into powder through a simple pat on the back or hug, or handshake. While she has gotten quite good at regulating this, there are still moments where she forgets the limits to her strength. Often resulting in either embarrassing or lethal consequences.

Personality: Amiable, warm, and goodnatured are all words to describe Amelie. Often further described as a gentle giant, most people she meets are quite glad she isn't the confrontational sort. Amelie is not one to grate on someone for things as small or irrelevant as clothing, bodily appearance or demeanor, those who are happy with themselves, Amelie is in turn happy with. Amelie is however more than willing to help someone out with near any problem, though asking her to beat the ever loving hell out of people is a rather quick way for her to lose respect for said person.
Biography: Born in Montreal, Canada in June of 1998, Amelie had to be born via C-section, a first in a long line of events denoting just how abnormal a person she is. Weighing 8 kilograms, it was already noticeable that Amelie was going to be a large child, and throughout her childhood she always seemed to weigh more than her peers despite not being much bigger. Her athletic promise was also something people took not of, typically being much better at most sports than other children her age. It wasn't until she was 8 when people started to think that something was up with Amelie. After she had been playing in the backyard of her house, a rock from a neighbors lawn had been passed over by a lawnmower, picking it up and whipping it at Amelie's head at highway speeds. It broke skin, and the girl started bleeding, but the bone wan't broken, and she was still fully conscious, but with a mild concussion. After a few stitches, doctors ran a few tests, and found that Amelie's bones were simply denser than the human standard, something so mild didn't warrant much else.

It wasn't until Amelie's early teens where she started a downward spiral, with her weight exponentially increasing, soon becoming a target for teasing and outright bullying, eventually she became anorexic, and even looking like nothing more than skin and bones, she still weighed nearly 280 pounds. It wasn't until she was hospitalized pre-preemptively that she started putting her effort into something else. With a medical watch and regular check ins to make sure she was eating, Amelie wasn't given much leeway to do anything, other than wander the halls of the hospital, sleep, and try to count the holes in the ceilings tiles.

That was until she stumbled in to the physical therapy ward, and through some gentle suggestions by a combat veteran, she started along her current path. In her junior year of high school, she all but pulled a 180 from her previous demeanor two years prior, she was no longer the meek girl who had more in common with a Halloween decoration. Now she looked healthy as a human being, and was a lot more outgoing than previous. She even kindled a relationship with a fellow member of the school's track and field team, though said relationship was both short lived, and the main reason for Amelie's revelation of being extrahuman. The two got intimate after their senior dance, and without knowing exactly how strong Amelie was, resulted in her significant other becoming permanently crippled.

To make a short story shorter, she ended up getting shipped off to some random plot of land in Thailand. Still emotionally unstable as a result of said event.

Ability: Darkness Manipulation--fairly weak, truthfully. She can create simple constructs, manipulate shadows, and see perfectly in the dark, but that's about it.

Unless and until someone takes off her hair ribbon... at which point she's pretty much got everything on the freaking list.
Weaknesses: As said before, as long as that ribbon's still in her hair, she's fairly weak on her own. On top of that, she's physically fragile. When the ribbon's off, however, she'll become much harder to defeat--although still quite frail, you'll have to be able to hit her in order to hurt her. If you can get the ribbon back on, though, she'll immediately become docile again. In short, her fragility and ribbon are her biggest weaknesses.
Personality: Sara is sweet and gentle, and very lonely. However, she doesn't try to make friends, due to the fact that she is essentially a time bomb waiting to go off. After all, if one removes the aforementioned hair ribbon, one will find oneself in a heap of trouble. Specifically, the fact that once the ribbon is off, Sara Waxman is gone. At least, the Sara that others would have known. In her place is a frighteningly powerful and totally psychotic girl with a penchant for trying to horrifically murder those she feels have wronged her.

So, uh, don't touch the ribbon, okay?
Biography: For other students, Marena Saino Academy offers safety and training. Not so, however, for Sara Waxman. For her, the school serves as a makeshift prison, a containment facility that serves the purpose of, not protecting her from the rest of the world, but protecting the rest of the world from her. As long as she's contained, she's less of a threat--and with her in reach at all times, it's much easier to keep a handle on her. It's also easy to conduct research on her, which makes it possible that one day, if she's lucky, her other side might be able to be suppressed for good, instead of simply restrained by the limiting ribbon she keeps in her hair at all times.

She's not a student. Not really. Unlike the others, she didn't have a choice in the matter. Once her powers developed, and the results were seen, she became a permanent resident at Marena Saino, or at the very least semi-permanent unless and until it becomes safe to let her out. No, she didn't volunteer, but then again, if they just released her into the outside world unchecked, things would almost certainly end horribly. And if the MEA ever got their hands on her...

Well, there's a reason that Sara Waxman is at Marena Saino, and it's not for education.

Sexuality: Homosexual, although it's not likely that that's going to be expressed much...

Ability: Poison Manipulation, specifically concerning toxins and venom--organic poison, to put it bluntly. She can, for example, summon a poison dart frog, or perhaps grow deadly nightshade, or simply create a bit of cyanide and drop it into someone's drink. However, she is unable to touch other people, as if someone's skin ever comes into contact with her own, they will be poisoned. Coming into contact for a short time often leaves them slightly ill, but the longer they're in contact, the worse off they'll be, eventually to the point of death--although that takes a while, and you'd have to be pretty stupid or pretty immobilized to actually die. Her mind is also filled with knowledge about poisons, and she is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to the different types.
Weaknesses: Despite her power level, Lily has one rather troubling physical disadvantage, specifically asthma. It's pretty self-explanatory in how it can hinder her, and although she does her best to stay on top of it, it can still be a pretty serious problem. For example, just getting too emotional can give her an attack, and exerting herself too much--say, in a fight--can render her helpless.
Personality: Despite having once been outgoing and cheerful, Lily is now nervous if not outright hostile around others, always wearing as much as possible to avoid the risk of someone touching her skin. Even if she weren't poisonous to the touch, she would still dislike too much contact with other people, preferring that they not touch her on skin or clothing. She seems to have an obsession with the poisons she manipulates, but it's unclear whether that's real or just an act. The same goes for her occasional homicidal tendencies, or perhaps I should say genocidal, since during those moments she lashes out specifically at humans. It is important to note that she no longer considers herself part of the human race.
Biography:

Lily didn't always lock herself away--sweaters, scarves, boots and gloves to cover up every inch of her skin that she can. She used to be normal, a happy child who loved life and herself despite her disadvantage. She wasn't ridiculously popular, but she wasn't unpopular either--just sitting comfortably in the middle, living an average life and quite happy with that state of existence.

She was also rumored to be into girls.

Whether the boy had somehow actually thought he was helping when he decided to 'show her what she was missing', or whether it had simply been a convenient excuse, all that Lily knew was that one moment she was screaming for help and the next moment he was, strychnine overtaking him and sending him into convulsions.

He was already dead by the time someone found the two, a terrified girl shivering, sobbing, and trying desperately to breathe next to a contorted corpse. It was an innocent mistake to put a hand on her shoulder, just as it was when Lily's parents hugged their daughter.

It wasn't a mistake when Lily sliced her own wrists, intending to bleed out. It wasn't a mistake when the people who rescued her brought her to Marena Saino... at least from their perspective.

Since then, she's been quite a reserved girl, and it's anyone's guess whether or not she'll try to kill someone else or herself again. However, surrounded by people that are on her level, she's undoubtedly in a much safer environment.

Whether it's safe for anyone else to be around her is another matter, and those who walk by her room and hear her whispering the same phrase to herself over and over again may find themselves wishing that they were anywhere else.

"Humans are poison. Humans are poison. Humans are poison."

Who knows?

Ability: You could say that Mariel has seven powers in one--for in a way, she does. One day she'll be controlling the elements of the sun itself, the next day the moon, or perhaps fire, water, wood, metal, or earth. This might very well be a terrifying power, if it weren't for one little problem.

Mariel can only control one of these elements per day, and she has absolutely no clue which one it is. The only way she knows is to get up, look in the mirror, and see what color her eyes are, for her eye color reflects the day's ability. She has no choice in the matter, and it can be quite inconvenient.
Weaknesses: Other than the whole 'basically rolling a die with her powers' and the fact that she's basically heptapolar, she is also very clumsy, much to her eternal chagrin. It's quite easy for her to trip over her own feet, and as if that weren't bad enough, she also bruises quite easily.
Personality: Mariel's base personality is difficult to say, really. She's intelligent, but pretty much everything else varies. Every day, with new elemental abilities, she leans towards a different aspect of herself. On days when she controls the sun, she's more active, willing to go on the offense, and her gold-colored eyes reflect her desire to be the very best(like no one ever was?). On lunar, dark-eyed days, she's more introverted, cooperative(and a bit indecisive), passive and less likely to act unless put in direct danger. Days where she has power over fire are accompanied with bright red eyes and a passionate thirst for excitement. Water days are made obvious by blue eyes and a calm, quiet nature, if a bit of an obsession with cleanliness and perhaps emptiness. Earth is a day for green eyes, patience, and dependability(and stubbornness), while metal-wielding days are signified by silver eyes, a tendency to want to hoard things, and a short attention span(especially when it comes to shiny things)--although she also possesses much less empathy. Finally, days where she controls wood are days with brown eyes and a sense of freedom and lack of restraint, yet with a touch of gentility. When actively using her powers, she'll be completely given over to those aspects of herself.
Biography: Can you imagine how miserable you would be if everyone thought you were off your rocker? Well and truly insane, I mean, not the silly sort of 'Oh, you're so crazy' that gets thrown around. What if you had a different personality every day? Such was the experience of Mariel Hirsch, outcast by the world around her due to her ever-changing nature. Her abilities were a gift in one way, but in the other, nothing more than a curse. And sure, it's nice to be able to make the temperature bearable on a blazing summer day, or to be able to have one of the most fantastic climbing trees in existence, but what if you have no one to enjoy the sun with, no friends to sit in the tree and talk to? What if your entire life is spent... completely alone?

Well. I suppose she wasn't entirely alone. She had a very lovely collection of dolls, and she gave them all names and talked to them, made friends with them. But other than that, she had nothing. Even her own parents were frightened of her. No amount of medicine made her personality changes stop. No doctors could figure out what was wrong with her. She was a freak.

A freak to all except one person, a transfer student named Rachel. Although at first put off by Mariel's odd behavior, Rachel eventually managed to befriend the strange girl, brightening Mariel's life considerably.

Until the two got into a fight on a day Mariel was controlling fire, and the girl's short fuse burned too bright.

Rachel was hospitalized with third-degree burns, and Mariel found herself facing a choice. Suffer the consequences, or go to Marena Saino to ensure that nothing of the sort ever happened again.

The rest, as they say, was history.

Looking at the apps in a minute.

This RP is less strict than the other ones I've done, but the main point is that your character shouldn't be so strong that they can get through things themselves without being countered or needing help, etc. Having someone that's very strong in one area of combat but who still has a weakness that can be exploited, for example, isn't OP. It would be OP though to make someone that's good at everything, without anything balancing them out.

That was my first 'successful' RP, it was made after Thelrose Academy/Not Quite Human, my first attempted rp, had monsters and humans attending the same school, bombed.

Hey, so I was planning on making two characters tied to the MEA. One would be a scientist who worked there before jumping ship when the MEA began experimenting on a lab partner who displayed possible signs of metahuman powers. The other would be someone who was experimented on, and was freed by the scientist as a way to brute force their way out of the compound. Would that work?

Also, do extraterrestrials exist? Could a character interfaces with an alien to gain power, assuming they already had some form of metahuman power to begin with?
