Castion Sign-up Thread [Fantasy/Medieval Tech, Open]

Postby Ulskar » Sat Sep 02, 2017 4:00 pm

Welcome to Castion, a medieval fantasy tech worldbuilding and character roleplaying region!

The gameworld draws inspiration from fantasy realms depicted in popular media. Game of Thrones/ASOIAF, Dark Souls and the Souls' series of games, and the Witcher series (particularly the lattermost) are sources of inspiration for the lands and realm. In a medieval world dominated by familial dynasties vying for power and dominance in the Castion's feudal pecking order, characters will do all that they can to advance their position or further their goals. It's up to the players how these narratives carry themselves and the direction they go, as well as how they intertwine with the many other stories playing out across the continent.

Some basic tidbits and background to go off of when building your lore:

*Magic exists, but is looked down upon. It's rare, it's dangerous and highly unpredictable, with not much actually being known about it. Magic users are ridiculed and often killed in most realms, and especially in the countryside of most countries, the commonfolk burn suspected witches and mages for they fear what they cannot understand. That is, however, unless the magic user is a sun-praising monk or nun in service to the Church of Astor. Otherwise they are an apostate, and must flee vicious persecution to places more accepting of such.

*As magic does exist, so do non-human races as well. Dwarves and elves inhabit the world, but are few in number compared to the humans that inhabit Castion. It's possible there are some dwarven or elven kingdoms that still exist far in the Londo mountain range, or deep Black Forest, but most non-human kingdoms exist only in tales of yore, when they were destroyed by growing human empires and civilizations. Today, most non-human are treated as scum and forced to live in slums and ghettos. This isn't the case for every realm, and it isn't uncommon for a king to have a long-bearded dwarven master of mint or militia, or even an elven minstrel to compose songs in his name...

*Monsters of this world exist, as do fanatic religious knight orders that quell them. The smallfolk are fearful of what goes bump-in-the-night, and thus look to the Templars to do often what the king's soldiers are not equipped to handle. Types of monsters include flesh-eating undead "hollows", monstrous sea krakens that can crush ships in a single blow, and all sorts of hellish horrors that plague the common man who wanders too deep into the woods at night...

*Life is largely reminiscent to how it was in the medieval times. Common levied footmen do not charge into battle in full plate armour, and there are no battlemages wreaking havoc and chaos with fireballs and lightning strikes. There are no Da Vinci-esque flying machines dropping bombs, either, or dragons flying across the skies and destroying scores of men in one go. Battle and combat, as well as daily life for the common folk and for the nobles in their high-walled castles, existed largely like they did in real life. There are fantasy elements that exist, but it's more so in the sense that the fables they came from just so happened to be... true!

We are a very new character role-playing and worldbuilding region founded as part of a breakaway-side project to Aeia, a modern-tech roleplaying region. Castion's base comes from an established group of roleplayers, and we're looking to expand and invite others to join in on the fun! We are open to all, whether you are an NS newcomer or veteran, however we do require previous RP experience for those wishing to take more important roles in the region. Much of our activity takes place on the NS forums, IIWiki and regional Discord.
If you are interested in joining our regional RP, consider filling out an application form below and posting it within this thread.

Before you consider constructing an application, please take a look at these maps:

Geography and climate of nation: Temperate, with medium Snowfalls and rain.
Most comparable Real-World country and why?: Germany/Italy for the naming scheme. Viking Kingdoms for the warrior/trading lifestyle.
How will your dynasty/characters/nation fit within the existing regional power structure? (strengths/weaknesses): Virshia's strength lies in its Defenses. Its Navy isn't the high praise of the region (They're Viking Longships), but they have very good weaponry in its Army's inventory, such as Repeater Crossbows and crude Flamethrowers. Virshia is also a gorgeous country, with almost mystical hills and impressive cliffs along the coastline. Virshia isn't affiliated with Ulskar, and considers itself an independent nation.

How did you hear about Castion? Saw this thread in the recent forum activity.
What other nations do you use on NS? Mestovakia and Helvetea.
Roleplay sample (Optional, though required for claiming a more powerful role):

Ceres Island Air Force Base was located pretty much at the midpoint between Yuktobania and Osea. The Island itself was part of a gorgeous Atoll that appealed to the base personnel...whenever they got the chance to relax. The War between The Yuktobanian 'Neucom Incorporated' and the Osean Corporation 'General Resource Limited' was entering its Third Year. While GR LTD had held the advantage at first, they had lost the Country of Cayenne and were currently struggling to control the vital trade country of Aurelia. At the moment, Cere's Objective was to intercept and destroy Neucom Transports heading to either Cayenne or Aurelia, but what was left of its resident Air Squadron had been massacred a few days prior to Wasp-2's Descent. A Neucom Fighter escort had surprised them, and only 3 GR fighters made it back to base, and only one of them would ever be able to fly again.

It was in this somber mood that a GR LTD-affiliated VM-920 Pelican Transport landed on the main runway. The transport was Ceres' connectin to the Osean Continent, bringing supplies and ammunition, and occasionally new pilots. the Pelican taxied to a halt outside one of the larger hangars, where a group of technicians were waiting to offload the supplies. After the plane shut off its engines, several technicians and two forklifts assembled to offload the cargo. The Cargo bay door opened, allowing the three new recruits to get a glimpse of the Base's runway, control tower, and one of the forested areas popular with pilots looking for some shade. The three of them collected their gear from a shelf and moved their way around the forklifts and Technicians, waiting inside the cool-aired hangar to stay out of the Hot rays of the Summer Sun. All three were dressed in the blue-grey casual uniform of the GRAF.

"Phew! They weren't kidding when they said this place was scorching in summer." A Brown haired young man commented as he sat down on a bench, setting his duffel bag down heavily on the spot next to him. 2nd Lieutenant Laurence 'Larry' Foulke was an Osean Citizen of Erusian descent. His fellow pilots were Yuki Nakamura, an immigrant from the Eastern country of North Point, while the third and most peculiar of them was Illya von Littenheim, an almost doll-like young girl from the Osean Principality of Belka. Whereas Larry and Yuki were brown haired, Illya's hair was like that of a winter snowfall, and her ice-blue eyes shown with an eerie light.

Larry’s upbringing was that of a working-class family in the Osean Capital of Oured who ha dbeen conscripted into the Air Force. He had a reputation as an honest person, if a little shy around girls. Yuki was a former Air Courier who had found herself unemployed after her Employer’s Air Transport business went bankrupt. She had taken up the offer of Military Service, if only because she was already tired of transporting stuff and craved action. Illya herself had volunteered. Her Father was a famous Belkan Ace from the war in 1995, and she had always had a lifelong dream of flying. All three pilots, from very different backgrounds, now found themselves on the same level: Rookie Pilots in the General Resource Air Force. Background, Social Class, and age meant nothing to the Company. As long as you were capable of flying, that was all that mattered.

Anyway, the three of them were waiting on the bench when they heard someone call out to them, easily heard over the hum of machinery and the shouts of the Technicians. “Hey! Are you guys the new recruits?” All three turned their heads in the direction of the open hangar door and saw their new Officer, a purple-haired 20 year old girl, her skin colour noting her as a member of the Sotoan Desert Tribes. Flight Officer Melvina Vidya Advani was the only one present who was in casual clothing, with denim jeans, sandals and a black t-shirt. She hailed from Sotoa, a Desert country on the western coast of the Yuktobanian Continent. Melvina was known to be the class clown of the Ceres Island Squadron, playfully making fun of her squadmates. Now, though: She was the only one left, and one could see the saddened expression behind her cheerfully casual demeanour.

Larry, Yuki, and Illya got up, all three saluting her. “Ma’am, Airmen Foulke, Nakamura, and von Littenheim reporting for duty.” Yuki said, her right harm in a crisp salute over her eyes. Melvina returned the salute, before shaking each of their hands, beaming. “I’m Flight Officer Melvina Vidya Advani, of the Ceres Island Squadron…what’s left of it, anyway.” She muttered bitterly, before resuming her cheerful expression. “I’m sure we’ll get along just fine! After all, since I’m the pilot with most experience here, that means the Lieutenant Colonel says that I’m your new Captain. But don’t expect me to be all Regulatory and Formal and saying stuff like ‘I’ll be writing you up after we land’.” Melvina said, using asnarky tone for that last part of the sentence. “I’m not like that. I’m a pilot, same as you guys.” Melvina finished, before looking at all three of them. “So, how’d I do? Was that a good unformal welcome, or was I a bit too arrogant in saying I was the most experienced person here?”

“Nothing arrogant in stating fact.” Larry shrugged.
“I’ll take an officer like you over a glorified bureaucrat any day.” Nakamura said.
”I was expecting a mean officer, but I like you a lot more!” Illya said, smiling. This caused all three pilots to wonder how someone so cute could actually exist.

---

“I’m grateful that Command could spare us some pilots, even if they are rookies.” Lieutenant Colonel Lucas Casement had said only that to them, before dismissing them with a “You’ll be getting your first assignment tomorrow. Until then, get settled in, pick your plane, and train yourself with the VR simulators.”
“He has a lot on his plate,” Mevina said apologetically to Larry, on the beach facing the Atoll’s centre. Yuki and Illya weren’t there, as they had carried their own duffel bags over to the Squadron’s Barracks. “Despite our best efforts, transports are still arriving in Cayenne and Aurelia, and he’s gotten criticism from his boss.”
“It’s hardly his fault, though.” Larry said. “He’s a Base Officer, He can’t expect to do well with an understaffed Squadron.” Melvina nodded in agreement. “His Boss doesn’t see it that way. He expects results no matter what status we’re in.” They talked for around an hour about Ceres Island, each other’s lives, and what planes they used. All the while, the sun set on the horizon and the moon rose in reply. After retiring to the barracks, All 4 pilots tried out the VR simulators. Despite Melvina’s experience, Yuki got the best score, having gone for the high-priority targets. She got high-fives from Illya and larry, while Melvina herself had congratulated her with a playful headrub.

The morning, the same day as Wasp-2’s descent, all 4 pilots having been sufficiently rested, washed, and fed, their assignment came in for them. It was a relatively simple mission. A flight of two Neucom VM-2101 Transports (Modified from the original Cruise Missile Bomber design) and four R-24 Archer fighters were on a flight path from the Neucom-affiliated Mirskai Airbase. This path would put them in a position a hundred miles south of Ceres Island.

“In short, what Command expects of you is the complete destruction of all Neucom Aircraft. That is all.” Casement said, before exiting the briefing room, leaving the four pilots to change into their flightsuits. A Flightsuit was a technologically advanced bodysuit that would receive data from allied Units, their Aircraft’s systems, and their registered killcount. The Flightsuits also provided protecting from G-forces, which came in handy during high speed dogfights. In the female Changing room, Illya and Yuki were asking Melvina about the type of planes present in the hangar as all three changed out of their casual outfits into their Flightsuits. Melvina thought about it for a few seconds before replying. “We have a few R-40s, but they’re reserve Fighters. I’m not quite sure if they’re to your tastes, but…” She turned from putting on her shoes to look over at her two fellow girls and was startled to see them a bit too close for comfort, adoration in their eyes. “I…I guess you two like the R-40, eh..?” She said, chuckling nervously. In response, both Illya and Yuki nodded enthusiastically. At the same time, all three heard a knock on their door. “Are you three ready?” Larry said through the door. “They’re readying our planes in the hangars right now.”

It was in this state of a controlled hurry that Melvina, Illya, Larry and Yuki arrived slightly out of breath at Main Hangar 1. “Ceres Island Air Squadron, reporting for duty…” Illya said, panting for air as she put her hand against the fuselage of the closest R-40 for support, its 5 Multi-purpose missiles shining underneath the plane’s belly. The mechanic who had been waiting for them rolled her eyes and gave the three rookies a refresher course on how to operate the R-40. “Simplest plane in the GRAF.” She said, patting the same plane that Illya was supporting herself with. “I’ll make myself scarce, before I get blown away by you guys taking off.” She gave them a thumbs up before scurrying away to the safety of the hangar’s interior.

Thirty minutes later, the four R-40s were at the designated interception point, 1500 metres above the ocean. The Transport flight, having been informed that Ceres Island was no longer a threat, had cursed their superiors when they saw the four blips appear on their radars.

“Larry, Illya, you two take the transports. Yuki, You and I will tackle the fighters.” Melvina said as the four Neucom R-24s split off from the transports to engage them. With a minute, two of the Arcgers had exploded in midair due to successful missile strikes from Melvina and Yuki. “That’s one to each of us. Nice job, Captain!” Yuki commented, giggling with delight as she got behind the third R-24 and opened fire with her Machine guns. The R-24 jinked right to avoid the stream of bullets, as it fired off a missile at Illya, who deployed her Flares to escape it.

Larry, achieving his first kill, had put a missile in the left wing of the lead transport. It had created a massive hole in the wing, close to the fuselage. Pieces of metal flew off the transport as the area around the hole widened and disintegrated. A few seconds later, the wing suffered enough structural damage as the airstream and missile damage combined to make the wing shear off around the spot where the missile had connected. As the VM-2101 began its death spiral into the Ceres Ocean, they received an update from the Ceres Island Control Tower. “Unknown contact approaching the combat airspace from the south. Finish up with your Interception and investigate the Contact, Over.” The Mission Co-ordinator said, appearing in a video link in the lower left part of their HUD, an area reserved for Video communications.

Melvina nodded in confirmation, right as her 3rd Missile connected with the last R-24 dead center, creating a cloud of smoke, fire and debris as the Archer’s own ammo and fuel detonated. The Last transport faired no better, as Illya sent a missile into its cargo bay. It must have been carrying ordinance or fuel, because its own explosion was three times as large as the Archer’s had been. “Control, this is Flight Officer Advani reporting. All Transports and Escorts are down. Moving to investigate the contact, over.” Melvina said as the 4 planes formed up in an arrow head formation. "So, How did we do?" Melvina hummed pensively as she counted up the kills. "Yuki and I got two Archers each, while Larry and Illya got one transport Each. 100% Success rate!" She said. The 4 pilots let off their steam and laughed, celebrating. All 4 were relieved to have made it through their first mssion together without a single casualty. In the middle of their celebration, the Controller reported his update.

“Contact is at an altitude of 6000 metres at a distance of 15 miles due south.” The Co-ordinator said. “I wonder if this is a Neucom plane.” Yuki said, forming up on Melvina’s port side. “I don’t think it is. The Co-ordinator sounded like he had no idea either.” Illya replied. Larry nodded his head. "I don't think this contact is Neucom at all, actually." After about Thirty seconds…. “Control, this is Yuki. I have a visual on the contact.” Yuki said, having spotted the incoming Object: Wasp-2.

IC nation name: This Most Serene Republic of Sannerby-Annestad
Capital: Annestad
Government type: Aristocratic directorial republic. The nation is mostly controlled by an aristocratic elite, which consists of senior civil servants, senior guild members, noble families, clergymen and merchants. This class chooses a legislature called the Lagting, which consists of 50 members, 5 of whom are senior civil servants, 5 of whom are senior guild members, 5 of whom are clergymen, 10 of whom are merchants and 25 are of noble families. The membership of this legislature is chosen by a mix of sortition and election. They choose three Hertigar, who are the collective leaders of the nation, are chosen every year and are responsible for the administration of the Republic. They choose the Tioråd, a council composed of ten members of the Lagting, who advise them on policy matters, and the Tolvråd, a council that oversees justice in the nation and interprets the many law codes.
RP population: 123,183
Ethnic Group(s): The people are either referred to as Sannerby-Annestaders, or Sannerlanders, and are culturally Swedish.
Language(s): Sannerlander, which is an IC name for Swedish.
Ruling family: There is a host of many noble families within Sannerby-Annestad, but its aristocratic nature means no one ruling family exists. The three Hertigar are Sven Grahn of the powerful Grahn family, Oden Holgersson of the powerful Holgersson family and Ville Ljungborg of the powerful Ljungborg family.
Major noble houses (if applicable): Other powerful noble houses include the Åkerman family, the Batra family, the Lofven family and the Ahlstrom family.
Brief background of major characters for your RPs: I will first give a background for the nation itself:
The nation stems from two towns built on the banks of the river Sanner: Sannerby and Annestad. Sannerby was founded first, by a group of farmers and settlers who named their town after the river, and Annestad was founded soon after by the mighty warrior Sven the Red and his wife Anne Ljungborg. The two towns eventually grew into each other, and the town's people were quick to discover sea travel, and sailed to foreign lands with the intent of raiding. They stole many riches of other nations in the process, and made the twin cities rich. The people later settled down, and became traders, selling goods from nearby in exchange for goods from afar. Rejecting monarchy and feudalism, a system of government was created in which influential people from the city itself shared power between themselves in a series of complex institutions.

Major characters include the Hertigar. They consist of Sven Grahn, a young man from the noble Grahn family, with an impatient attitude and a strong view of his nation. He is kept in check on his attitude by the other two Hertigar, Oden Holgersson, an old man belonging to the Holgersson family, who is a well respected member of the elite, long-serving on the Tioråd and Lagting, who has a respect for the institutions and traditions of the city, and Ville Ljungborg, another relatively young man, but one with a more cautious attitude and a respect for tradition, and an interest for the economic side of things within the city.

I also plan to roleplay merchants in their adventures, going to distant lands in pursuit of riches and power, and people going about their daily business from the city itself, although I haven't developed any characters for these purposes yet.
Map claim (Imgur): I have been placed on the map, in between Thalenmark and Dravuthenia.

Geography and climate of nation: It has a climate similar to southern Scandinavia and much of northwestern Europe, that is a temperate oceanic climate. This climate is not without its rain, and the city state has a high amount of rain.
Most comparable Real-World country and why?: It is hard to find a single match. While culturally it is inspired off of Sweden, influence is also taken from Italian merchant republics, such as Venice and Genoa. A lot of government institutions are based off of San Marino, which has maintained a republican form of government for centuries.
How will your dynasty/characters/nation fit within the existing regional power structure? (strengths/weaknesses): The nation has a strength in its economic pursuits throughout the known world, and it has a superior naval ability to most nations, but it should be noted that the nation, due to its unique government structure and attitude, sees itself as superior and more civilised to other nations often, and thus the attitudes of the nation towards other nations is dangerous to its reputation worldwide, and the nation is heavily dependent on trade to keep itself sustained.

How did you hear about Castion? I was in Aeia during the creation of it.
What other nations do you use on NS? Crylante, and a bunch of other insignificant nations which you can probably find if you do the slightest bit of poking around.
Roleplay sample (Optional, though required for claiming a more powerful role): Enclosed in the following spoiler is a roleplay post I made in a roleplay concerning regional co-operation in the region Crylante is in:
It was supposedly the height of summer this morning, but looking at the overcast sky and the temperatures, it did not look like it. Such was the case when dealing with the weather on the North Asuran island of Lhedwin. Jenný Anadottir was used to this, hailing from the small town of Norðkirk, KT situated at the foot of the Crylantian Mountains, which were not known for their good weather. The fact that she could see her breath in front of her in the middle of August did not concern her as she stepped off the CrylantAir plane into the runway at Vænholm, the capital of the Federal Republic of Glanodel. It was a beautiful city, one many would go to for an Asuran weekend getaway, albeit a cold one, but she was here for business, not pleasure.

Four months ago she made headlines as at 31 she was the youngest person ever to be elected as the Director for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade. This gave her the prestigious role of being the head of the Crylantian Federation's Federal Department for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade. While some had questioned whether her age meant she was experienced enough for such an important position, she had done a fine job so far, with many advisers surrounding her at every waking minute to help her decide what policy the government would go for. Two of them were behind her now; Katrin Johannasdottir, a Socialist Party politician from the chocolate-producing city of Dybøll and Sven Sigurdson, a Farmers' Party politician from the predominately rural state of Glostrup. They were there to provide a more rounded view to Crylante's contributions in the discussion; while Anadottir's strong humanist, pacifist stance had gained her much respect from her peers, it was certainly not the view of every Crylantian.

As she walked into the airport, she could safely walk through the "Nothing to Declare" door - she had nothing to declare and Crylante was a friendly country to Glanodel - she could just pass through easily after showing her special passport indicating she was a head of government/state - albeit collectively with six other people. She then used the efficient Glanish public transport system to get to as near as her hotel as possible, and walked the remaining distance. She had picked up a security guard from the airport, who followed her and her advisors into the hotel as she checked in.

Any other info you wish to add (Optional): Monarchies are so overrated.

App on hold 'til I wake up and can review again later. Apologies for the delay, tired. Most part looks good, just got some questions and stuff.

To address some comments, left the ethnicity thing there moreso as ''human, dwarf, etc''. Used template from the MT parent region this was spawned from. Probably will take it out.

While we would be interested in having you, Castion is its own world with its own lore loosely based on other types of fiction with a healthy dose of original content. I cannot speak for other fantasy or medieval regions, but generic tropes of dragons, magic, and prancing elves aren't the focus of here, my friend. It's on court RP primarily. It would be misleading to label the region as purely medieval when there are mages and undead running about. It exists, although as stated before, it is called *low* fantasy!

Regardless lemme pm ya on the regional discord later and iron stuff out and address the concerns you have, see if we can come to a concession. Gonna sit on the pegasus knights thing and think about it in the meantime.

Really interesting, wish I could join, but the part of the map I'd like is taken and it would conflict to much with my lore.

How would you like to do some sort of cop op stuff though, would that be possible? I've been looking into trying to get back into Nation States for some time now, and been looking for stuff to do.

IC nation name: The Khilafat of Khomervan
Capital: Madinat al-Wurud
Government type: Absolute Feudal Theocracic Monarchy (Like the Caliphate in medieval irl)
RP population: Roughly 9 million
Policy towards non-humans: Purge them except for elves, who are respected as they are highly literate like the Khomayish
Language(s): Khomayish (persian/Arabic cross)
Ruling family: Caliph is elected from the 12 highest imams in the Majlis, including three from Cenenid and others. There is also an aristocracy who have little power.
Major noble houses (if applicable): Houses Hisab, Quraish and Marze are the main aristocratic families, owning much land but not having much real power
Brief background of major characters for your RPs: WIP
Map claim (Imgur): I cannot fashion my own one, so will preferably allow the maesters to smith a fine one.

Geography and climate of nation: Like Iran, it has a mixture of fertile plains, dry deserts and mountains. Mainly the latter two.
Most comparable Real-World country and why?: Iran and the Caliphates in the middle ages, as its a cross between them.
How will your dynasty/characters/nation fit within the existing regional power structure? (strengths/weaknesses): Khomervan is the heart of scientific knowledge in the region, with the most highly regarded universities in the world. It is also the heartland and head of the (yet unnamed) Moon religion, having considerable influence over other moon nations. It maintains some of the best (if not the best) spy networks, with the Whispermaster able to know of any plots in the nation and beyond. Much of this stems from traders, but also from secretive cabals of both converts and academics in the other nations who support the nation due to its stance on knowledge and research. This gives them power, but their military is not the strongest due to a deficient supply of iron and other essentials. Their economy is strong with trade but due to pathetic naval power is largely limited to continental trading and lacks some food.

How did you hear about Castion? I was here when it was concieved
What other nations do you use on NS? Arzoa
Roleplay sample (Optional, though required for claiming a more powerful role): You have some from me, I can fetch some fantasy ones from my other accounts if required.

(What appears to be) OP's territory, if I was to theoretically join I would have picked that location since its pretty similar to my territory in my own map.

BTW, who made the map, its really good.

Hmm, well I'd still like to work with you if you're willing to talk about it. I can be a little flexible! If you're interested in doing so, telegram me or PM me on the regional discord. If it's related to magic or technology, let's hash it out, and as the empire is a collection of nobles, you can carve land of it (provided you bend your knee to the Keizer, of course.)

Previously we had a citystate that was sorta the bastion for magic using apostates and the only home to a Aether (magic) University in the entire continent, but that user left due to IRL time constrictions. If you're interested in filling that empty ''role'', like I said, let's discuss!

If not,I'm potentionally interested in your other proposition if you wish to share more information. Look forward to hearing back from you!
