Sun and Steel
The War for Muranis
IC Thread
https://discord.gg/ca9fC3G]Discord

Sun and Steel is a war role play set in Future Tech, where the plucky Bakrans will be facing off against multiple invaders on the arid world of Muranis. The vast deserts of the planet will be the site of battles, the orbit above host to space fleet engagements, and the people of Muranis taking part in the slaughter to defend their home. Warfare on the ground will be everywhere from the fortresses, cities, and arid wasteland to the orbital shipyards, space ports, and habitats. Intrigue will exist, with spies and mercenaries joining the fray either for profit or patriotism. This is all out war for the planet Muranis, with the ashes mixing in with the endless sands.

Setting the Stage

Muranis, the jewel of the Setsko system. Originally colonize by the Bakrans decades ago, Muranis was thought to be a lost cause to many empires, with its scathingly hot days and cold nights anathema to colonial development. The Bakrans nevertheless created Muranis as it is today, erecting large cities in the harsh desert sands and automated foundries on the planet's large mesas. Hydroponics farms were built underground, harvesting moisture from the air above or what little seeped into the ground to feed the burgeoning population. Thus Muranis became a beacon of Bakran industry and influence in the Milky Way galaxy.

Not all is well on the arid planet. Archeologists have uncovered artifacts from an ancient alien civilization, who appeared to have occupied this planet several million years ago. Though information on the exact contents of their finds are sparse, it is clear that these artifacts are of great technological importance and can prove to be a boon to anyone who occupies the planet. The country and the planet is prepared for an attack against those who seek to plunder this artifacts, but welcomes those who seek to stand side-by-side and defend Muranis with them.

A Note on Conduct

The usual rules apply, and if you are on Nationstates you should know them so I won't go over them. There are only two things I wish to have special attention paid to: the word of the OP and variety. The first is very straightforward, the word of the OP is law around here, although I don't expect to exercise this very often except to guide the story as a whole. The second is more of a creative guide than a rule, but essentially be unique; don't be one of the many xenophobic genocidal maniacs or fanatical crusaders in the RP. These are just examples of course, the point is I'm looking for distinct factions with different agenda and ideals.

The fight for the planet of Muranis will be a hard one, and I will fight for every inch of the planet; I am not giving it up for the sake of the game. That being said, I will be fair even if it means shooting myself in the foot, but I will be very reluctant to give up the planet so you will want to pry me off of it. The Bakrans are very resilient fellows and extremely territorial, so expect stiff resistance from both the military and the populace.

Don't be afraid to fight amongst yourselves. I expect some backstabbing from my allies and enemies, player generated intrigue as well as from myself, and random variables being thrown into the equation. If things get too boring or bland, I may throw in something to spice things up.

Most of all, have fun.

Though this application is sparse, show me that you've thought this out and have a clear idea of what you want to do in this RP.

Code: Select all
[box]Faction: (Nation, mercenaries, or other entity)
Leaders: (Of your forces)
Side: (Attacking or Defending?)
Fleet ORBAT:
Ground ORBAT:
Nation Color: (Just a bit of fun: using the "Font Colour" function, what color should I make your nation name in the player listing?)
Additional Information:
Roleplay Sample:
[/box]

Optional Applications

If you would like to be a spy and/or have a spy on Muranis before/during your invasion, please use the following application. These spots are limited and I'll be pretty choosy with these. This is only for invaders

Code: Select all
[box]Faction Allegiance:
Name:
Purpose on Muranis:
Additional Information:[/box]

The Bakrans aren't in the habit of letting allies go to waste, so many of those defending with them are allowed to set up and maintain bases on the planet Muranis before the shooting starts. If you are a defender you may establish a base on the planet or in orbit.

Muranis and Bakran ORBAT

As stated earlier, Muranis is a heaping pile of sand, first and foremost. There does exist mesas, plateaus, dried up lakebeds, cavern systems, underground lakes, etc. Some of the more notable natural formations will be listed, such as mountain ranges and the very few large above ground lakes, but assume the rest is arid desert of one form or another. Major cities and fortresses will be mapped out. There are many, many more smaller forts, towns, and other points of interest that aren't listed here but appear on the map. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

MAP

 • The Great Reach: A large basin on the arid planet, the Great Reach was thought to be a giant ocean at one point, with the Shallow Sea and Vaytis Sea it's northern and western extents. Now it is a giant lakebed, filled with salt pans and cracked earth, although dunes are slowly forming here. Here temperatures are known to reach 130º daily. Giant mesas stand where islands once did and former ocean reaches now deep canyons reaching far into the crust.
 • Vaytis Sea: More accurately labeled an ocean, the Vaytis Sea is the last vestige of what was probably once a lush world. Mired in salt, both surface and underwater arcologies are hard to maintain compared the the Shallow Sea, so only one major installation exists here (Lookout).
 • Shallow Sea: An uncommon body of freshwater, the Shallow Sea supplies many of the hydroponics farms with water, making it a center for agriculture. There are a few underwater arcologies, with Kembra being the largest, but the residents describing living there as eery, seeing as there is little natural plant or animal life on the planet.
 • Nuutho Lake: In the Muranian tradition of understatements, the Nuutho Lake is more than half of the size of the Vaytis Sea but not nearly as deep. It has largely fallen by the wayside in the colonization process, occasionally harvested for its water to be de-bonded from salt.
 • Spine of Gods: Colloquially known as "the Spine", this mountain range reaches nearly twenty kilometers above sea level for most of its length, tapering off as it reaches it's ends. These mountains appear in sandstone brown, capped with frost towards the peak in some of the only snow not on the poles.

 • Thath: The capital of Muranis. More cosmopolitan than military strongpoint, it will nonetheless be fiercely defended.
 • Eygo: An industrial city in the far north, slightly cooler than the lower latitudes.
 • Spire of Neyra: Temple dedicated to Neyra, a diety in Isotheism. Deadly space monks live here.
 • The Lance: A large citadel, built on the great salt flats. Converging fields of fire, three hundred meter high walls, a planetary grade shield generator, and flat land for kilometers around gives the garrison unobstructed view and firing lanes of any oncoming forces. Its artillery weapons are so large that they can support the planetary capital of Thath two thousands kilometers away.
 • Kildar: Kildar is the largest spaceport on the planet, supporting dozens of space elevators. Each one is protected by a large shield generator, requiring sustained bombardment to break. It is a heavily fortified city.
 • Godspear: Fortress covering the areas around Eygo, Sorhal, and Ruen. It contains sizeable ship repair and resupply facilities, with eleven ships currently docked there.
 • Lookout: Underwater base in the middle of the Vaytis Sea.
 • Selneasis: City with a minor industrial sector towards the edge of the Great Reach.
 • Sandhearth: Fortress supporting Chevalle, Eothore, and Alkmera. This fortress is the base for the Thakis (or "Duneshakers"), elite shock troops dedicated to the defense of Muranis.
 • Kembra: Underwater arcology, surrounded by minor arcologies
 • Elbuno: Southern fortress-city, situated atop a mesa with factories under the surface.

Tribes: Known as gysuik in the Bakran tongue, the tribes of Muranis are survivors of ethnic warfare on the encumenopolis of Hollow. Following its unification and becoming part of Bakra, these ethnic minorities flocked to the fringes of Bakran space, content with being left alone and with a deep suspicion of city dwellers. They exist on Muranis in tribe-like societies, roaming or permanently settling in groups of a few dozen to hundreds. Minor skirmishes and warfare between these tribes have been known to occur, as well as a suspicion of government forces, but in general the tribes tend to side with the planetary government. However, some of them can be persuaded to fight against Bakra, though the majority will be engaged in guerrilla warfare against the invaders.

Locep: A hardy species from a frozen world they were genetically engineered to survive in on Muranis as domestic pets, but many escaped into the wild and they can be found feral all over the planet. They are about a meter tall and two meters long including their tail, which acts as both a weapon and balancing device. They have four legs and no manipulators, and can be best described as "giant desert wolves", with very short tan fur to blend into the Muranis sand.

Ground ORBAT: Applying all marine complements and carrier deployments, the fleet currently holds just under 50'000 troops, with ground elements (mechs, powered armour, tanks, transports, and artillery units) reaching under 600 pieces.
Nation Color: This dark green one.
Additional Information:If the numbers seem a bit too large, I want to explain that most battlegroups are in sense 'mini fleets' in themselves, rather than being one small unit. The entirety of the groups together are a huge bulk of the Dimonicist naval forces. And to distant myself from the usual 'religious zealots' that may arrive, my people believe that the alien technology has been left over from their own ancestors and pantheon of gods for them to reclaim. We are perfectly willing to share and enlighten you to the merits of Unitology, but resistance will be met with force.

Faction Allegiance: Fleet of Disciplined Ferocity and Gambit.
Name: Herren Priest Crix Halcard (Real name)/Bana Vookto (Fake name).
Purpose on Muranis: After gathering strong intelligence from passing traders that alien technology found on Muranis was related to Unitology, Crix was sent to help excavate the technology while reporting back to confirm said intelligence.

I really like your nation and idea for this RP, but could you please put your ORBAT in your app? Just so when I link it everyone can find it easily.

Additionally the "spy" app is more of a character app, so I'm asking who is the name of the operative(s) and their info on Muranis? Are they undercover? Commandos in the wilderness? Lawrence of Arabia types seeking to start an uprising of the tribes?

Clean these up and I would love to have you on board.

Don't worry about having too many (you can even bring in much more if you would like). I kept the amount of Bakran forces on the planet vague (though there are a lot) so that I could match, or at least be close to, the amount of forces swarming my planet.

If you want to adjust your ORBAT just tell me. Accepted.

Hey Bakra, I have a couple of questions since I'm planning out strategy of attack:
 1. Since Kildar supports space elevators, I'm assuming its directly on the equator, correct?
 2. If I were to land some troops off at the equator somewhere between Thath and Kildar, are they in direct artillery range of Kildar or The Lance?
 3. Is there going to be a map of space installations and fleet positions over the planet?

Dimoniquid wrote:Hey Bakra, I have a couple of questions since I'm planning out strategy of attack:

1. Yep, right around there.

2. Smack dab in the middle? No, that is out of the Lance's (EDIT: and Kildar's) artillery range.

I am noting that the positions of the fortresses are not random and the support from them is not limited to simply to artillery or missile support. From here they can comfortable launch ground raids on forces within a few thousand kilometers, airbases for small attack craft with an even larger range (some even accommodate starships), act as fallback positions for allied armies (effectively acting as the rearguard for many armies in the area), and as general thorns in the side for any armies on the surface. Additionally each one has fairly large garrisons that can act as field armies if the need arises.

3. Now that you point that out, this is a bit of an information gap. I'm going to update the OP with fleet concentrations and placement of orbital installations. I'm probably not going to make a map of it and will simply use the planet map as a reference point.

Gagium wishes to spread their influence throughout the Galaxy, and the desert planet has come to notice by the Gagium Fleet High Command. After a series of meetings between Gagium leaders, it was determined that Muranis would be good to begin with. The decision was made to assist the Bakrans in their fight, and return gain some influence on the planet (or maybe even a look at an artifact?)

Faction: Nation, specifically the Federated Worlds of Olimpiada
Leaders: Fleet Admiral Ambrosius Diogenus
Side: Attacking
Fleet ORBAT:
Nautikos I Setsko
3 Basileus-class dreadnoughts
5 Perseus-class siege guns
20 Hwach'a-class arsenal ships
20 Constantinople-class escorts
30 transports

Ground ORBAT:
195th Infantry Division
5 regiments of 2 000 soldiers each
50 transport gunships
30 air superiority fighters

27th Heavy Exoskeleton Division
2 000 "Angels" (colloquial nickname)
20 transport gunships

218th Armor Division
200 tanks (basically mobile artillery, they rarely get closer than 200m to enemy tanks)

Nation Color: Unfortunately, purple and red are already taken, so some sort of gold color would work (not necessarily this one)

Additional Information: Olimpiada has had a proud tradition of three things: Imperialism, democracy, and xenophobia. This naturally makes for an interesting internal and external situation. This is part of a recent push for Olimpiada to acquire more worlds that allows the crowded core ecumenopoli to clear out some. Of course, not just any world will do, and those laden with resources or some other appealing feature are seen as a good use of time. Even though the desert environment is hostile, the Federated Worlds have deemed it an acceptable target for colonization, particularly the corporate owned Archontia branch. To begin with, it aims to consolidate a hold over the orbit of the planet, and then seize a landing area using a small initial force, followed by larger reinforcements.

On a more OOC level, if you need additional information about any of my technologies, feel free to ask about them, I'll happily dump it. I'm afraid I've been terribly lax in composing a proper factbook, though I have information cobbled together in a number of other places offsite.

Olimpiada, accepted. More players, more war, more doom.

I'm going to keep this thread open, but an IC will be coming up. I'm not going to give a specific date or time at the moment, rather just announce it is incoming.

Gagium, Gebeta, what areas do you want to be set up in? Or would you rather wait for the fighting to start before committing to a spot?

I suppose I could set up a forward operating base for my forces a bit northeast of Lookout along the equator, as I could use it to shoot down invaders trying to take down the space elevators in Kildar or to provide support to the forces in Lookout.

(OOC: About how many lightyears away would the Setsko system be away from the Sun?)

A question regarding fleets: Are the defense groups above various cities able to move, or are they forbidden to do so for some reason?

Im fine in a place on the planet already. Some where with resources (as its your planet i leave it to you to pick the resource spot) my two cargo ships will be there but in orbit as well. Also, as a late addtion may i add 16 darters(ship to land cargo transports. A few will not surive the first fight) 8 per cargo ship.

You don't need to commit if you don't want to, just wondering what you were thinking. Lookout is an underwater base, so I don't know how well that would work. Setting up in/around Kildar should work.

Setsko is towards the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy, so I'd say about 20,000 light years.

Olimpiada wrote:A question regarding fleets: Are the defense groups above various cities able to move, or are they forbidden to do so for some reason?

They can move, the placement of them is partially their "home base" and their zone of control around strategic areas of the planet.

No problem, the extra ships work. If you're looking for mining, somewhere along the Spine of the Gods is your best bet. Most of the planet is desolate sang wasteland anyways so mining is generally difficult anywhere else, but the Spine is a mountain range that even dwarfs the Himalayas in both length and height.

Nation Color: How about a little bit a THIS!
Additional Information: The Federation of United Human Planets is a smaller, but growing power within the galaxy. Choosing to focus more on resource rich planets instead of capturing more comfortable planets as population centers, the UHP is as a result a highly industrialized and compacted nation. The military doctrine of the UHP tends to stand out, with the military focusing more on being able to travel farther and with more firepower rather than on comfort of living and the general technological advancement of its military. This has resulted in an odd dichotomy where UHP ships carry large array's of weapons and genetically augmented super soldiers, while still using heat radiators and rotating habitation rings on their ships.

The UHP prides itself on the free nature of its populace, with each individual inhabited planet acting as its own autonomous entity, with many other nations and factions living within these planets. Indeed, the UHP is almost more of a loose coalition of planets and planetary nations who have all agreed to protect and trade with one another rather than as an actual nation in the more traditional sense. In terms of living conditions, the people live wildly different lives depending on what world they live on. Some planets, like their home world Earth, are massively industrialized and polluted, with huge mega city's that stretch for miles and house millions of residents. Others, like Arcadia, have far lower populations density and large swaths of land with no residents, leading to a culture of frontier justice to combat the lawlessness of the unpopulated area's.

The UHP is perhaps best known for the ongoing occupation of the planet SPIT 1227. Long a pirate world, the UHP invaded and occupied the planet after SPIT 1227 (allegedly)flew an asteroid into a series of military installations in the Strong Arm system, making the moon of Hollow Oak visually unlivable. There has however been some debate as to weather or not this attack was a false flag operation, conducted in order for the UHP to be given a legitimate reason to invade and take advantage of the resource rich planet.

The UHP also owns and maintains a series of mining installations on other nations planets. Many have argued that these installations are little more than intelligence gather outposts under cover at best, or forms of soft imperialism at worst. It is indeed true that an inordinate amount of UHP spy's have been linked to these installations across the galaxy, but no one has been able to prove that the UHP is actively using these installations to try and influence other interstellar nations for the UHP's own gains.

When asked to summarize the UHP's tactics, most experts explain how the UHP prefers to exert their influence using soft power and espionage, but that they have the military to back themselves up should things go wrong.

Faction: Gao & Sutherland Mining LLC
Leaders: Director Millie Lynn
Side: Defending
Fleet ORBAT: 3x Heavy Cargo Cruisers (unarmed)
1x Light Corvette
Ground ORBAT:
1x Yutani Heavy Sand Crawler
2x Yutani Light Sand Crawler's
6x Survey Platforms
9x Mining Rigs
Garrison of 200 Private Security Contractor's (All contractor's are UHP Citizen's)
12x Autonomous Machine Guns
12x Man Operated Machine Guns
3x Anti Aircraft Guns
3x Space Launch Pad's
3x Atmospheric Capable Cargo Shuttle's
900 Personel (The majority of the workers are residents of the planet, but about 40% are UHP citizens who came to work the mines.)

Nation Color: Just slap a little of THIS on there.
Additional Information: Gao & Sutherland Mining LLC is a rapidly growing company that has managed to establish many mining installations and boom towns across both UHP space and the space of many other nations who allow them to operate in their territory. The vast majority of these operations are on gas giants, minding helium and other gasses that can be used in starship fuel. However, they have begun to branch out, and have started mining iron, copper, coal, oil and uranium on terrestrial planets as well.

While on the surface they appear to be a simple minding company, many watchdog groups have accused them of being front's for the UHP to field spies out of. It has been suggested that many Gao & Sutherland Mining LLC mining facilities and cargo starships are used as listening posts and information gathering facilities that ultimately report to the Navy Intelligence Tasks Group, the UHP's main intelligence organization. No charges have been able to be levied against either Gao & Sutherland Mining LLC or the UHP, but many now view the company with suspicion.

Name: Astronaut Ensign First Class Thomas Wakefield
Purpose on Muranis: To monitor the planet, its inhabitants, and its government to better asses weather and how the UHP should proceed with operations on Muranis.
Additional Information:Thomas Wakefield showed considerable promise during training for the UHP Navy, and was soon accepted into the prestigious Genetically Augmented Trooper program as a handler. Her served with distinction for two tours on SPIT 1227 before the NITG took notice and recruited him. He returned to SPIT 1227 after being trained by the NITG as an intelligence specialist, where he managed to locate and help destroy upwards of 40 insurgent cells, and successfully interrogated over 77 suspects.

Invaders and defenders, feel free to increase your infantry and space forces if you wish (just tell me ahead of time). I've got a lot of ground troops and starships, though I will not be overwhelming your forces with waves and waves of troops. Also, invaders, don't be afraid to try (and sometimes succeed) at engaging in genocide or killing my populace. I'm in a particularly sadistic mood so sifting through hundreds of thousands or even millions of my civilians seems like a good use of my time.

Most of my operations are going to be trying to extract the Human miners from Gao & Sutherland Mining LLC. After that, the mission changes to running a lot of op's to try and cover our nefarious tracks. ;)
