Year 1500 After the Fall
Post-Apocalyptic Alternate History RP OOC

OP Board:
- OP – The Industrial States of Columbia
- Co-OP's – Sanabel-==-Intermountain States-==-Liecthenbourg

OP Directives:

Feel free to hop by the discord, and get those apps up :)

RP Description:

It is said that man long ago lived in Eden on Earth. The Ancients build cities of diamond and iron, mastered the deepest seas and reached into the vastness of the night sky. It is said that man rivaled even the gods in mastery over the forces of this world. And in this mastery grew arrogance, as man ever grew in their dominion over the Earth. This mastery was not to last. In a single day and night their cities were set ablaze, their nations laid to ruin, all their works turned to ash. A brave new world rose from the darkness, as nature blanketed the ash and bones of the old world in new growth. Mankind once again has asserted its mastery over the world, with cities of stone rising in reclaimed fields and forests. Now the mantle falls on you. Will you guide a people out of darkness into the dawning of a new age? Will you reclaim the glory and knowledge of the ancestors? Or will you crush all in your way in a bid for total dominion. The choice, is yours...

After the Fall is a medieval technology post-apocalyptic nation/ faction rp, set 1500 years after the end of it all in what was North America. You will play a nation or faction based on your idea of a post-fall society that has evolved through the centuries. This is medieval tech, so no nice electric things, and gunpowder is decently primitive.

Rules and Regulations:
There are a fair few rules and guidelines for the RP, listed here. These following six are basic and should be easily understood and followed, and after that will follow more specific info that is more liable to change.
1. Obey NationStates forum rules
2. Obey the OP and those appointed as per their role
3. Make sure you are not metagaming, godmodding, numberspamming, or generally RPing in bad form
4. Have a couple of paragraphs a post and good grammar & spelling
5. Exercise common sense generously
6. Be active every couple of days at least
7. Have Fun

Beyond the basic rules, there are a few regulations, which is basically a special way of saying special rules for regulating the RP. So rules+1. Each regulation is R.X.~~~ where X is the regulation number and the squiggles are the subject matter.

-No Caches of modern tech. We are all at an equal medieval lvl.
-Not many monuments of our old world are left. Do not have 1500 year old buildings set up as retrofitted fortresses.
-The climate has largely recovered from the end. It was horrific, and so was its aftermath, but we aren't looking at many nasty irradiated zones of death.
-Fauna and flora may be allowed some change from the current set up (I personally suspect tigers may well exist in the map area, because cats).

Applications:
If you want to reserve land, you must use the following reservation. Reservations will last for 12 hours though you can appeal to the OP to make it last for a maximum of 24 hours. These reservations are meant to give you time to make your application or keep your area safe while AFK. These are not meant to be used to keep other waiting. You will not be able to have a second reservation (for the same area) unless you provide significant reason why.

Generic Info
Nation Name: The Kingdom of Solara
Symbols:
Image
Location:
Image
Population: 764,579
Capital City: Sun's Grace

Government Info
Government Type: Absolute monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: The realm is ruled by the Sun-king, who is guided by a small council called the Sun-Council. Every bill is proposed by the Sun-Council, inspected by the Sun-King and then passed into law. Any bill not passing the Sun-king's inspection will fail to pass into law.
Ideology: Solist nationalism (Focus on keeping Solara worshipping the Sun.
Leader/s: Sun-King Avantus Alesand

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: The Solaran people are typically unforgiving in their ways of worshiping Solin, the name for the Sun-God. Most of their lives are centered around serving Solin in every way, and promoting the rule of the Sun-King across the world. They are very tanned, with most having dark brown or black hair. Eye colors differentiate but those with a golden hue to their eyes are labeled "Sol-Kin", or those who have been chosen as leaders and important figures in Solara.
[b]Religion:
The Religion followed in Solara is Solism, or the worship of Solin, the Sun-God who led their ancestors across the desert plains to the south, speaking to Gedrid Alesand only and leading him to the lush and beautiful lands of Solara. The Sun-Kings are chosen from the descendants of Gedrid Sun-Spear. Solin proclaims that life in Solara will be filled with blessed things and has ordered his people to spread the Sun's Love to the world, to truly embrace the warmth of the sun.
Ethnicity: Caucasian, Latin
Other Cultures: "The Strayed" a group of a few thousand that have openly declared their love for Solin false and has abandoned his ways. These have been labeled as "Misguided and misled" by the Sun-King and he allowed them to occupy a small settlement in Northern Solara, completely independent from the Kingdom, though that hasn't stopped many from the Solaran Army from taking what or who they want from the local Strayed.

Military Info
Army: Regular army, 90,000 soldiers, all soldiers are equipped with a standard brestplate bearing Solin's Blessing, golden bronze gauntlets, a belt, skirt of tough leather with golden tassels hanging from the belt, and leather boots that protect the shins, bearing Solin's Blessing. Tasked with protecting the homeland and defeating invaders.

The Order of the Eclipse, 600 soldiers, equipped with full body plate, covered with Solin's Blessing and golden tassels. Tasked with hunting down the Kingdom's worst enemies and traitors. The only branch allowed to leave Solaran soil to complete their mission. They have the best training of any soldiers, raised from birth to fight. They answer only to the Sun-King.
Navy: Merchant Fleet, 24 ships, the ships are of good quality but smaller than Solaran Navy vessels. Tasked primarily with trade with other nations and as a reserve fighting force.

Sun-Fleet 80 ships, most of which are large troop carriers and ship breakers, capable of slamming through even the toughest of wooden ships, utilizing the iron sun-spears attached to the front of the ships.

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: It is described as a Perfect Competition, where many buyers and sellers are allowed to buy or trade anything they like, as long as it obeys the rules laid out by Solin.
Goals: To spread Solin's Love across the globe as well as annexing territory as it goes
History: Solara was founded 300 years prior to now, when Gedrid Alesand crossed the Southern Dunes from the lush tropical forests of Eluzaakadar, the lands forbidden from any Solaran until they first pass Solin's Test when they reunite with him in Solantia.

Generic Info
Nation Name: Chartered and Sovereign Companies of Vouisjane
Symbols: Flag and Symbol
Location: Yellow on the Map (Louisiana and colonies)
Population: 600,000, Norlene itself containing around 240,000 alone.
Capital City: Norlene

Government Info
Government Type: Thalassocratic Merchant Republic
Brief Explanation of Government: There are four social classes in Vouisjane: Slaves, Bondsmen, Freemen and Liverymen. Only the last two classes are able to vote, and Liverymen have votes twice the worth of that of Freemen. Also tied into the governmental system are the merchant businesses, which are split into three types based on prestige: Guilds, Societies, and Companies. The Lord Commissioner is directly elected by the companies, while the Council of Thirteen are voted for by Freemen and Liverymen.
Ideology: Mercantilism
Leader/s: Lord Commissioner Vencelas Desaulniers
Council of Thirteen
Lord High Admiral Guedry dit Grivois
Admiralty Board

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: The people of Vouisjane are culturally descended from the Cajuns of times lost. Most Vouisjanens live in the various towns of Vouisjane, and Norlene the capital, while a few live in the many plantations in the rural areas. They are known to be a religious people, though Catholic priests complain that they worship gold far more than God, and claim to have witnessed sailors blessing a goddess of the seas, and that a strange pantheon exists, with various companies allegedly having their own patron god and rituals, though none of this has been proven. They are also a slave holding people, and it is rare to see a Freeman of Maye, Fricein or Indien heritage, though they exist, and some (very few) have risen to Liverymen and hold slaves of their own.
Religion: Catholicism
Ethnicity: Vouisjanen
Main/Accepted Culture(s): Vouisjanen
Other Cultures: Taxen, Maye, Fricein, Indien

Military Info
Army: Being entirely surrounded by the Empire of Taxes comes with its own perk. Through paying tribute, the Vouisjanens are guaranteed protection from outside forces, and therefore have no need of an army. That said, every town and plantation has its own militia, and Norlene has a trained guard, and if needed an army can be scrambled together from their marines, and mercenaries hired.
Navy: Vouisjane's navy is its pride, and a large amount of resources, training and wealth are invested into it. The standing fleets are made up of trained volunteers, with conscription and oar slaves considered to be only necessary in times of need. In times of peace the fleets largely act as escorts for merchant ships. The unrealised strength refers to ships which can be quickly retrofitted or recommissioned for war, and the pool of trained sailors and marines not currently serving in a public capacity.

Realised Strength
1st Fleet: 10 Heavy Galleys 90 Galleys - 6,000 sailors - 7,000 marines
2nd Fleet: 5 Heavy Galleys - 2,000 sailors - 4,000 marines
3rd Fleet: 30 Galleys - 1,500 sailors - 1,000 marines

Unrealised Strength
Decommissioned: 2 Heavy Galleys, 24 Galleys
Merchant Fleet: ~500 Galleys, of which around 140 are able to be properly retrofitted for naval combat
Sailors: A pool of around 25,000 trained sailors
Marines: Around 4,000 marines

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: The economy of Vouisjane is based upon two things: Trade and slaves. Through control of the known nearby sea, trade can be directed into Norlene, from where the items can be dispersed across the south, along the Mississippi river. The other backbone of the economy is slaves, made to produce various items, such as cotton and food, upon the many plantations which dot Vousjane proper, and the colonies, like Jamaiqe. A great deal of this wealth goes into funding the vast navy and merchant fleets, supported by the famed Vouisjanen Arsenal, a linked group of efficient armouries and shipyards.
Goals: To establish full dominance of the sea, and carve out more lucrative colonies.
History: Much of the history of Vouisjane is lost to time, but a rough timeline is known.
Classical Times
- Various cities and towns pop up along the Lower Mississippi, the greatest of these being the port of Norlene, built upon the ruins of an ancient and unknown civilisation. Many of these towns and cities collapse as small empires are formed and die, though Norlene endures and is able to fend off any would-be invaders.
- Norlene, an oligarchy ruled by six aristocrats, is conquered by a foreigner leading a small band of mercenaries. The conquest is done through guile, as his band was hired to protect the city from falsified reports of incoming invaders, and instead orchestrated a coup. The foreigner, Teodorico de Ávila, declares himself king of Norlene, and conscripts a large army.
'Dark' Ages
- The House of Ávila conquers a small empire over the next 200 years, mainly centred around the Lower Mississippi, with expeditions sent every now and again into the Upper part of the river. They establish a new capital further to the north, away from the mob in Norlene, unknowingly on the ruins of what was once Baton-Rouge, and name it. Avillenn
- Discontent in Norlene rises, as it is the largest city in the kingdom and the source of the majority of its income, yet funding is largely redirected towards Avillenn. A small riot escalates into a full blown rebellion, coming at a time of hardship for the kingdom as it recently lost several key battles against a foreign power (possibly Taxes?)
- The kingdom collapses, and Norlene gains its independence, as well as control over some of the Lower Mississippi. The citizens write a new constitution, vowing that they shall know no king ever again, and that the wealth of the citizenry is their priority.
Current time
- Vouisjane has become a part of the Catholic world, and in return for protection pays tribute to the Empire of Taxes. They have focused upon establishing a mercantile empire, establishing colonies in the Maye region, and upon various islands. They have continued with their republican system, and now boast one of the wealthiest cities, and largest navies, in the world. But many wonder if this grand era of prosperity can last, while others seek further glory and riches.

Generic Info
Nation Name: The Tandi Empire
Symbols: Flag of the Tandi Empire
Location: The area based off of Southern California and Baja
Population: 1.2 million
Capital City: Ansiney (modern day Anaheim)

Government Info
Government Type: Central Bureaucratic Monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: The government of Tandi is a highly centralized imperial monarchy with a Catholic-based bureaucracy. The Emperor rules for life, unlike any of his appointees and all Emperors of Tandi descends from the Imperial House of Jaeng since its foundation. Under the Mandate Under God, the Emperor commands absolute loyalty from his officials and subjects, but officials are expected to try to guide the Emperor to the right path if the latter was mistaken and Emperors are usually sensitive to public opinions.

The bureaucratic element of the government is dominated by Christian scholars who enter service in the government through the civil service exam. All officials are expected to have passed a series of literary and psychological tests that determine their ability to serve the empire. Theoretically, anyone, including slaves, can take the civil service exams but only the wealthy have the money to afford preparations for the exams. However, seeing a lowborn take and pass the exams are not uncommon and are often celebrated in stories.

Ideology: Monarchism, Civic Nationalism, Political Catholicism, Meritocratism
Leader/s:
1. Emperor Jon of the Jaeng Imperial Family
2. Chancellor Gregor Tullet
3. Minister of War Randee Leah
4. Minister of Diplomacy Aaron Jones
5. Minister of Finance Isaac Bronn
6. Minister of Justice Jak Ginn
7. Minister of Secrets Hunter Pyle
8. Master of Faith Miles Larman

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: The population of the Empire is diverse due to the many ethnic groups that inhabited the lands before unification. While many aren't sure how such a land is host to a diverse population, all are unified through their faith to God and loyalty to their Emperor. The Imperial population is described as patriotic and faithful for they show loyalty to their Empire and to God and the Papacy. There is a class system in the Empire known as Estates. At the highest is the Imperial family who's dynasty is a right annoited by God.

Below the Emperor and his family is the aristocracy. The aristocracy differs from other aristocratic family in the Known World due to that they're theoretically not an exclusive class. The aristocrats are largely scholar or military officials who achieve this level of advancement by passing the civil service exams or the military officer exams. A member of the aristocracy can expect title of lord and ownership of land for their families. It's a class where people can theoretically rise up the social ladder based soley on merit, despite that only wealthy and some middle class merchant families can afford tutoring for their sons to pass the civil service exam; most lower to middle class individuals seek the military officer exams for social advancements. There is a bit of an animosity between the Nobility of the Quill (scholar officials) and Nobility of the Swords (military officers) due to their differences in socioeconomic background. If an aristocratic family however does not have an individual that serve the Empire as scholar officials or military officers by two generations, they can lose their status quickly and regress to peasant status if they're not lucky.

While not below the aristocracy, the other Estate is the Clergy. The Clergy consists of high ranking officials of the Catholic Church in the empire such as Bishops and the Master of the Faith. Like the Aristocracy, any individual can rise up the social ladder but the privileges of the Clergy only affects the individual and not their family (as any one entering the profession of God is to give up their family name and to serve God).

Below the Aristocracy and the Clergy lies the Medians. The Median consists of merchants, teachers, doctors, craftsmen, skilled laborers, shopkeepers, knights, priests, and most other urban dwellers who have money. These are the folks who would be considered the "middle class" due to their distinction from the wealthier nobility and the poorer peasants. In not uncommon cases, some median families excise more wealth than the nobility and could even dominate local politics with guilds and such.

Below the Median lies the Commoner Estate. The commoners consist of peasants and independent farmers. While most commoners don't necessarily starve, their opportunity is largely limited due to them not having wealth to purchase education and their limit of access with their rural backgrounds. Despite this, the Commoners are looked at favorably by the high class, moreso often compared to the merchants because of them working God's land and being self-sufficient.

Religion: Catholic
Ethnicity: the Core Men, the Valeys, the Yatins
Main/Accepted Culture(s): Imperial, Tiquan
Other Cultures: Amerkasrikan

Military Info
Army: The Imperial Army of Tandi is one of the most technologically advanced military in the known world. The use of gunpowder has blessed the Empire with powerful weapons ranging from hundred missile launcher, mortars, cannons, and primitive grenades. Imperial scientists also developed artillery rounds that spit out shrapnels when it hits a surface for cannons and mortars and rocket propelled arrows that explode on impact; both perfect against cavalry and personnels. Besides their gunpowder based weapons, the Imperial Army also makes use of conventional weapons such as composite bows, trebuchets, crossbows, spears, pikes, barrels of oil, swords, etc.

The standing Imperial Army boasts a active army at 16,000 men strong. The armor of the Imperial Army depends on the ranks. Low ranking soldiers wear padded clothes and the only metallic armor they wear is their helmet. Mid-ranking soldiers, however, have access to brigandine armor and high ranking officers wear plated armor.

The Great Wall is a marvelous piece of work, commissioned by the Emperor Robert the Wise to provide a large barrier against the Amerkasrikan. The Great Wall stretches across the Tandi-Amerkas border with castles being manned by the Imperial Watch, a division of the Imperial Army that numbers around 3,000 soldiers.

Navy: The Imperial Navy stands at 12,000 strong and hosts a well maintained fleet of ships, although much of its fleets are directed towards blockading the northern region. Like the Army, the Navy made use of gunpowder, placing light cannons on the side of their ships for long range combat with trained archers being used for anti-personnel attacks. The Navy values speed, accuracy, and range and hosts one of the finest navy in the Known World.

Brief Description of your Economy: Because there aren't a lot of arable lands in the Empire, Tandi has a trade based economy. Commerce is an important aspect of everyday life in the Empire, hosting great navigators and merchants in history. Much of the population are merchants and shopkeepers and farmers are praised for being able to work the Lord's land.
Goals:
- Spread the Lord's love to the north.
- Seek new trade routes into the eastern part of the Known World.
History:
The Petty Kings Period
Most of early history of Tandi is marked with conflicts and division. Many states that made up Tandi were in constant warfare with small kingdoms and tribes fighting for supremacy for centuries, maybe even millenium. Nothing else is well known about this period except that the major states that emerged from this period is the Holwod Kingdom, the Tiquan Confederacy, and the Berdino League, all holding dominance over their respective territories with the Holwod Kingdom dominating western Tandi, the Berdino League having power over eastern Tandi, and the Tiquan Confederacy controlling the Tiquan Peninsula. The Petty Kings Period ended with the Holwod Kingdom, lead by King Omar Sankez defeating the Berdino League and consolidating power over much of Tandi with the Tiquan Confederacy being the only faction that was able to stop Holwod advances at the Battle of Sand Ego.

The Holwod Dynasty
The defeat of the Berdino League and subsequent control over much of Tandi up to Sand Ego lead to the declaration of the Holwod Empire by Emperor Omar Sankez, later recorded as Omar the Conquerer. The Holwod Empire seeked to consolidate power over Tandi, establishing reforms that gave the Emperor supreme power over the defeated states and bringing land reforms to seek support from the peasants. Omar's reign saw peace for the first time in the country but came at the cost of him squishing various rebellions with impunity and declaring himself as the God Emperor. His reign drew opposition from Catholic scholars and clergymen who refused to address the Emperor as a deity. The Holwod Dynasty was shakey and was only upheld under the leadership of Omar the Conquerer. At Omar's death, his successor was his firstborn son Zak, later recorded as Emperor Zak the Innocent. Zak was an ineffective leader and his reign oversaw corruption and the increase of power of his advisor Charles Bolton. Zak died just six years into his reign and the fifty year dynasty fell into conflict with various rebellions erupting. The rebellion ended with a popular rebel leader Aradesh Jaeng seizing the capital city of Lewood and forcing Emperor Karl the Young to abdicate, declaring himself Emperor Aradesh of the Tandi Empire.

The Reigns of Aradesh, Robert, and Stanley (aka the Three Good Emperors)
When Aradesh took control of Tandi, he worked to repair a broken country. Aradesh mended relations with the Papacy and banned polygamy and incest, rolling back one of the remaining vestiges of the Holwod Dynasty. Aradesh ruled for thirty years until his death, placing his secondborn son Robert as his successor. He was recorded as Emperor Aradesh the Great. The reign of Robert lasted for twenty six years and Robert was characterized as a ruler who listened to the scholars and push forward reforms that allow the Median class to take part in the civil service exam. He was recorded as Emperor Robert the Wise but died without an heir to the Imperial throne so his younger brother Stanley was chosen to succeed Robert. Stanley ruled for seventeen years and was famous for officially abolishing slavery, citing that the institution of slavery is an insult to God's love. He pushed for land redistribution and lowered taxes for the lower classes and was posthumously remembered as Stanley the Just. He was succeeded by his thirdborn son Eugene as the fourth Emperor of Tandi.

The Reigns of Eugene, Geoffry, and Thomas
The twenty year reign of Emperor Eugene the Bold brought the addition of the Tiquan peninsula over to the Empire. The Tiquan Kingdom was friendly to the Tandi Empire ever since the foundation of the Tandi Empire by Aradesh. The Tiquan Kingdom was a vassal state to the Empire and their king was backed by the Emperors of Tandi. During the reign of Eugene, Tiquan King Santiago Gomez was asassinated by rebels, putting the peninsula into chaos. The Tandi Emperor sent troops down south to "avenge the fallen king and establish order." The Southern Expansion ended on the seventh year of Emperor Eugene the Bold with the Tiquan Peninsula added into the Empire. Emperor Eugene was succeeded by his son Geoffrey as the fifth Emperor. Geoffrey's early reign showed promise, he promoted the arts and education and pushed for political reforms allowing bastard sons to enter the civil service. However, somewhere within his reign, he became insane and started violent purges against the Ministers, military officials, and even his own family. The reign of Geoffrey the Mad lasted for five years when he was deposed by military and scholar officials and was replaced by his cousin Thomas. Thomas ruled for eleven uneventful years and was posthumously known as Thomas the Innocent. He was succeeded by his secondborn son Jon who at the age of 23, is the current Emperor of Tandi.

Generic Info
Nation Name: The Laurentian League
Union of the Troi -- The Union is, by far, the most powerful state in the Laurentian League. Situated near the straits of Lake Huron and Lake Erie, it occupies an extremely strategic position within the Great Lakes. Traders in the Lake Erie region are forced to submit to the reviled Troi toll, which constitutes a significant portion of the state's revenue. Those who refuse to pay suffer the wrath of the Union Navy, a formidable force known specifically for the superior quality of its ships. It is also famous for its high-quality metallurgy and coveted blacksmiths. It is one of the few states within the Laurentian League to possess an elite force of swordsmen.

Greater City of Sunsid -- Sunsid, located on the northeastern shores of present-day Michigan, is a powerful state in its own right, although it is often overshadowed by its southern brethren. The city dominates much of surrounding Lake Huron, and its citizens are known for their high living standards. In terms of military power, they are known to use massed barges to overwhelm their enemies. The city is frequently known to have troubles with Canuck raiders from the northern regions, and as a result, the city's leadership has been looking to project its power and secure its foreign interests.

Republic of Wudsown -- Wudsown, established in the straits between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, is located at the northern tip of mainland Michigan. It is fierce when it comes to protecting its control over the strategically important straits -- should a hostile rival gain control, it could effectively mean the decline and ultimate death of Wudsown. As a result, its military is known for its bravery and heroics; tales of desperate boarding actions and epic sieges are widely regaled throughout the Laurentian League. The economy of Wudsown is almost entirely dependent on the timber industry, which has thrived thanks to the dense woods of northern Michigan.

State of Couler -- The State of Couler is believed to have been established by a particularly ambitious band of Quebecois merchants; situated on the southern coast of Saginaw Bay, it has utilized its strategic position to grow into a regional powerhouse. It is home to a thriving fishing industry, and is responsible for transporting lumber from the north to cities like the Troi. Due to Couler's dependence on the Bay as a source of food, the State has developed a highly-skilled coastal defense force, which emphasizes maneuver over bulky barges and larger craft. As a result, Couler's navy has become valued as an important defense against the northern raiders, and to any other enemy that dares to threaten the Lakes.

State of Ensay -- The State of Ensay is the only major land-power in the Group of 6; dominating the present-day Saginaw River and its various tributaries, it dominates the inland trade in Southeastern Michigan. Located west of the Troi and south of Couler, Ensay has remained heavily resistant to the Troi's attempts at subjugating them. Despite being one of the more reluctant members of the Laurentian League, they are a valuable and necessary asset, providing skilled pikemen, archers, and occasionally cavalry.

Dominion of Corwind -- The land which we currently know as Southwestern Ontario was, historically, much better-off than their counterparts in the north. While the Canuck barbarians looted, pillaged, and attacked defenseless towns, the more civilized peoples in the south had begun to peacefully trading with the various Great Lakes states. This started a process of cultural assimilation, as the Canadians began to adopt the customs, practices, language, and even religions of the Laurentian culture. Many of these various states and tribes would band together to assist the newly-forme Laurentian League in their struggle against the Quebecois invasion. In the aftermath, the Dominion of Corwind was formed as a buffer state against further encroachment. Despite being the largest member of the League in terms of land mass, it is heavily de-centralized, with most of its army and navy being concentrated into the hands of local leaders. The southern parts of Corwind serve as a breadbasket for the Laurentian League, as various agricultural crops are produced and exported throughout the Lakes.

Symbols: Flag
Location: Dark blue in Eastern Michigan/Southwest Ontario
Population: 700,000
Capital City: The Laurentian League has no official capital city, as it alternates between the various city-states. Currently, it is in the State of Wudsown.

Government Info
Government Type: Loose confederation of highly autonomous city-states and merchant republics
Brief Explanation of Government: The Council of the Frame is the political body responsible for making executive decisions when it comes to foreign policy, diplomacy, defense, and trade. In practice, it consists of the recognized leader of every member state in the Laurentian League. However, the political costs and capital associated with sending a leader to the temporary capital has made it so that most of the smaller, weaker cities, towns, and states oftentimes entrust their leader's vote to the Group of 6 -- an informal organization consisting of the Laurentian League's most powerful and most influential states. The Council of the Frame is responsible for electing a Framer to represent the Laurentian League to 4-year terms. The Laurentian Assembly essentially functions as the League's legislature, and can veto decisions made by the Council. Every state is obligated to send 2 representatives, although the Group of 6 also dominates matters within the Assembly. While it can be called to assemble at any given time, it is only required to meet every 2 years.

Other important institutions include the Forum; a body where a group of government representatives listen to the grievances of the people. It is a place for intelligent discussion and debate. The Council of Elders functions as a judicial body, although it only handles disputes between members of the Laurentian League. Criminal justice and other matters are handled by the state's individual courts or systems.
Ideology: Republicanism, Secularism, Non-interventionism, Free Trade
Leader/s: Framer Leo Muler II

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: The Laurentian peoples can be described as independent, stubborn, and fierce. To an outsider, they may seem unwelcoming and cold; however, many are forced to go to great lengths in order to make a living in a highly competitive world, where wealthy merchants and powerful guilds dominate society. While many take great pride in their hard work, there is also a sense of underlying humility and realization. Individualism is often emphasized over the needs of the collective. The wealthy and rich are viewed with admiration and respect, a status that everyone should work to attain. This has resulted in a very negative outlook for the League's lower classes, especially the poor who live in the slums of the Troi and other major cities. Among some of the less unique aspects of the Laurentian peoples are their infatuation, some would say, with the "Union" -- a vague, abstract idea that the lands, now so divided, had once been unified as one people, under a powerful leader. The "Union" represents a Golden Age of sorts, where the people experienced peace and prosperity.

Laurentian society is divided into 4 major classes. At the top are the gentry, sometimes known as the aristocrats. These represent the very top of society, the wealthy social, political, and economic elite. Many of them are families whose ancestors amassed great fortunes. The class below the gentry are generally defined as the middlers, or the burghers -- well-to-do people, oftentimes merchants, artisans, and craftsmen. While not quite as wealthy as the gentry, they are still able to make a sustainable living. The middlers stand in stark contrast with the laymen, or commoners. The poor, many of which live in crowded slums, begging for money and work. The fourth, and final class are the peasants, or serfs. They are not as numerous as in other societies, mainly due to the urban nature of the Laurentian League. However, they can be found in some inland areas, the outskirts of cities, as well as the agricultural breadbasket of Corwind. Peasants and serfs are generally bound in service to their lords; they toil for hours on end without rest, and are given little in return for their hard work.
Religion: The Laurentian League offers no discrimination in terms of religion. It does not force its member states to adopt a singular religion. This policy has resulted in a plethora of different religions, cults, and societies. Quebecois Catholicism is dominant, particularly on the eastern coast, while Lutheranism, along with other forms of Protestantism, reign supreme on the western side. A mix of folk tradition, spiritualism, and ancestor worship is practiced by the Canuck peoples in Western Ontario. A period of religious revival has begun to give birth to new religions, with different focuses -- many of them take advantage of the laymen's plight, offering new hope, in the form of a utopian society. Such religions include the Society of the New Jerusalem and the Movement for a New Union. Due to the tolerance of the League, a number of religious minorities, many of them persecuted exiles, have also begun to appear.
Ethnicity: Eastern Laurentian, Corwindian
Main/Accepted Culture(s): Eastern Laurentian, Corwindian
Other Cultures: Western Laurentian, Barbaric Canuck, Civilized Canuck

Military Info
Army: The Laurentian League possesses no unified army in peacetime. The various armies are managed and commanded by their individual states. However, in times of war, every state is required to send a certain amount of their troops to battle. The Framer is responsible for leading these forces, or appointing a commander to lead them in his absence. This has resulted in a diverse range of fighting men, all with their own specialties and training. The general maritime focus of the Laurentian League has resulted in many of these soldiers being well-versed in boarding, exchanging missile fire with enemy vessels, and amphibious sieges. This maritime focus has lead to weaknesses, as many of them are inexperienced and ill-equipped for land combat. The exception comes from the land-locked state of Ensay, who controls Southeast Michigan's major rivers and tributaries. Ensay is largely renowned for its superior pikemen forces, which are used in dense formations to counter cavalry. The Dominion of Corwind is also another state known to possess an adequate ground force, although it is mainly oriented towards using unconventional weaponry to surprise, harass, and ultimately repel the enemy force. The amount of forces that could be mustered by the Laurentian League widely vary. In the last war, some 5,000 troops were mustered. However, in times of national defense, the number may rise to some 20,000 men.
Navy: Unlike the army, there is a small, peacetime navy. It functions mostly as a patrol force, and occasionally may seek to protect vital trade routes. At the center pf the navy is the versatile Lakeboat, a ship designed to transport troops and board enemy vessels on the Laurentian Lakes. However, the bulk of the Laurentian League's ships are managed and controlled by the various states. Quality, structure, and design vary widely. The Troi is known for the superior quality of its ships, while Sunsid, on the other hand, focuses more on quantity, using massed Lakeboats to overwhelm its enemies. Wudsown is more famously known for its unique boarding ships, with Couler having small, but swift transports capable of maneuvering around their enemies. States with much of their economy based on the Lakes trade have invested heavily in their navies, making a unified Laurentian fleet a formidable force to be feared by its opponents. There are no accurate estimates for its size, with many ranging into the hundreds, and even thousands of ships.

Other Info
Brief Description of your Economy: The Laurentian League was and continues to be overwhelmingly reliant on the Lakes trade; in particular, it dominates the Eastern Lakes, consisting of present-day Huron, Ontario, and Erie. The Lakes provide an easy way to transport goods en masse. Major exports include Canuck furs, timber, fish, iron ores, and grain. There are, however, two types of trade: short and long-distance. The short-distance trade, which is typically limited to the Laurentian region, is dominated by small merchant guilds and independent middlers seeking to make a decent living. While less risky and cheaper, it also yields less profit. The long-distance trade, on the other hand, is dominated by powerful guilds and rich merchants.
Goals:
  • Defeat the Western Laurentians, and assume absolute control over the Laurentian Lakes
  • Integrate the Laurentian League politically
  • Survive, and continue to prosper off trade
History:
The initial history of the Laurentian region is murky, and even now, its exact origins are heavily debated by historians. The Laurentian region, which has generally come to define the land area around the Great Lakes, experience great upheaval as the few remaining survivors attempted to rebuild civilization. As centuries passed and once-irradiated lands became habitable again, the ancestors of the Laurentian peoples would begin to construct shelters and homes, oftentimes near the lakes or rivers. As their communities grew in size, turning into towns and even cities, they started to establish contact with other civilizations. Rudimentary boats began to spread fall into widespread use, as the Laurentians came to rely on the Lakes for their livelihoods. The beginning of trade in the Laurentian Lakes would mark a period of relative prosperity, a "Golden Age" of sorts, as these communities thrived and prospered.

However, that was not to last; overpopulation caused by the Golden Age, combined with warfare and disease, caused a period of relative strife and decline. The divided states of the Laurentian Lakes competed and fought over trade routes, power and influence. Unified, they would form a wealthy, powerful state. Yet any thought of unification perished under the intense rivalries and competition between the states.

In addition, Laurentian cultures began to diverge into the Western Laurentians, based in the Michigan and Superior Lakes, and the Eastern Laurentians, who were centered around the lakes of Erie, Huron, and Ontario. As a result, it was only natural for the Eastern Laurentians, who were seemingly besieged by their trade rivals to the west, the Canuck raiders to the north, and an increasingly hostile Quebec to the east, to be pre-disposed towards the concept of unification. The first seeds of unification were sown in the first Canuck invasions, as organized bands of barbarians plundered, pillaged, and burnt down dozens of small towns, settlements, and communities. In response to the invasion, a council would be set up, although it would remain virtually powerless. Most states were still hesitant to give up historical rivalries and their sovereignty to a higher organization.

Unification would never truly be achieved until the Quebecois invasions; Quebec, who ruled a vast domain in the Great White North, had begun to harbor ambitions in the Laurentian Lakes. Their continued encroachment alarmed many major states -- the Troi, in particular, viewed Quebec as seeking to supplant Troi dominance in Lake Erie. War broke out with the Quebecois invasion of Southwest Ontario, viewing the Laurentian states as too divided and too weak to resist effectively. The Troi would declare war first, followed by several other states that feared Quebecois dominance. The hastily assembled Coalition would, initially, meet disaster; the divided leadership often squabbled. Most were in it for glory and ambition. As their armies prepared to cross and invade the Troi, only one man would be able to rally the Coalition's forces -- Gage Butler.

The Miracle of the Troi saw Butler's forces prevail over the more disorganized Quebecois; in the span of a few minutes, the illusion of Quebecois dominance had been shattered. Butler's victory would be used as a rallying call for the Coalition. The disaster would prove to be irrecoverable on the part of the Quebecois, as discontented nobility, combined with sheer war exhaustion, would pressure their king to seek a quick end to the war. The resultant peace treaty would officially recognize the beginning of the Laurentian League, consisting of much of Eastern and Northern Michigan. In addition, it oversaw the creation of the Dominion of Corwind, while Southeastern Ontario became a neutral buffer zone. With their main rival, Quebec, gone from the Great Lakes, the newly unified Eastern Laurentians experienced a new wave of unbridled prosperity.

Significant challenges, however, continued to remain. The Western Laurentians remained as defiant as ever, in spite of the various overtures and diplomatic delegations made by the newly-formed Laurentian League. The Canuck raiders still remained a problem; during the Quebecois invasion, they had launched a ruthless campaign, plundering much of the northern coast. Some advocated for a war of expansion, to secure Lake Ontario. However, doing so would certainly mean conflict with the Western Laurentians -- after Quebec, there was little political will to fight. States like the Troi also feared that a war launched in the Great White North would shift the Laurentian power base away from the southeast and Lake Erie.

The Laurentian League, since then, has attempted to expand peacefully and diplomatically. The second "Golden Age", which occurred in the aftermath of the Quebecois invasion, saw the "Group of 6" emerge as the dominant powers and entrench themselves within the system. In addition, society has seen rapid change; the rise of the 4 classes, and income inequality has resulted in the formation of secret societies, cults, and even entire religions, each group claiming to have their own answers for society's ills. Trade that once benefited all now only serve to enrich the elite, and democratic norms have begun to deteriorate, in favor of an oligarchic government that panders to the wealthy. The Quebecois menace may have been defeated, but the Laurentian League remains threatened. The Western Laurentian rivals sit patiently, waiting for a chance to pounce. The Hordes in the West, while distant, rule over vast tracts of land, and constantly seek to expand their domains. To the east, a powerful nation of fire-worshippers strive to spread their faith to every corner of the known world. The Golden Peace that has existed since the Quebecois invasion will not last for long...

Brief Description of your Economy: Agriculturally based, most Haitians are subsistence farmers. Historically important sugarcane is still widely grown across the Empire, and works as a stand-in for currency in some of the more remote parts of the Empire. Production of a variety of tropical fruits and nuts is universal, orchards of fruit bearing trees are the number one source of food in Haiti, this includes mangoes, papayas, mahogany nuts, bananas, and pistachios. While "tilled earth" agriculture is also common, it isn't universal, sweet potatoes, a variety of beans, peanuts, rice, sorghum, millet, and pigeon peas are grown by those who participate in this practice. More exotic plants are grown by the rich landowners and bought by the religious officials include spinach, coffee, and cacao. An abundance of grain has encouraged ranching, but a lack of viable grazing land, along with uneven surface area (with most of the land in Haiti being mountainous), have prevented ranching from reaching a larger potential. As an island nation fishing has remained an important part of the economy and food production.
Goals: Expansion into the Caribbean, Acquisition of rumored riches on the Mainland, Conversion of Heathen Beliefs to Vodou

Generic Info
Nation Name: The Realm of Cadie
Symbols: Flag of Cadie, the moose, Queen Cadie I as fabled leader
Location: Click
Population: ~ 418.000
Capital City: None, revolving castles -- Largest city: Port Woodlay

Government Info
Government Type: Monarchy
Brief Explanation of Government: There are thirteen major lords, who are tasked with the defense of the Realm of Cadie. Every time their leader dies, the thirteen choose a new one from their one -- Usually by seniority, with a few rare deviating cases. After being elected by the others, the elected Lord may style himself "First Shield of Cadie". Thus their title would be Lord/Lady [...] of [...], First Shield of Cadie. The ruling lord also gives each of their fellow lords a title and task.
Ideology: Egalitarianism, Pacifism
Leader/s: Lord Luthor of Bywater Keep

Population Info
Brief Description of your people: Cadians are a rather easy folk. They fish, hunt, cut wood and farm - That's what most of their economy is based on, with salt and (more minorly) coal mining having a less significant role. For whenever they have free time, they like to sing and drink and even wrestle. Feasts, although not as large or colourful, are held often and have a great role in Cadian society. Musical instruments or theatre (arts generally) aren't held in high regard. Women aren't at a disadvantage in Cadie, they may even choose their own man, but can not serve in the clergy. Female leaders and matrilineal marriage aren't uncommon though.
Religion: Our Lady Cadie
Ethnicity: White/Caucasian mostly
Main/Accepted Culture(s): Cadian
Other Cultures: /

Military Info
Army: There is no standing army in Cadia, merely garrisons for towns and forts. Fabled throughout Cadia and maybe even beyond are the moose riders, a very exclusive cavalry unit of not more than 12 battle-hardened men at the side of the First Shield of Cadie. Besides them, only the thirteen Lords may ride a moose, and all of them do so for the sake of honour, tradition and not the least a show of wealth and fame. There is barely any other cavalry, only some single units in larger armies during times of war - Or scouts, but they are obviously not trained or meant for battle. Cadian units are commonly found in light armour and with heavy weaponry. Pride of the Cadian force are their archers.
Navy: An unorderly assembly mainly cogs, which are used for trade.

Brief Description of your Economy: The economy of the realm is not one exceptionally rich or strong. They have a solid market for goods that they need themselves - wood, fur, fish, agricultural goods - and if they have too much, they'll sell some of it. Cadians are also involved with coal mining, which they have found to be a useful fuel substitute, and salt mining. The latter is also one of their main trading goods, since they smoke lots of their food and thus don't need too much salt.
Goals: Protect the realm and find friends

History: The realm of Cadie has been around for a long time, and there are a few stories on how it came into existance. The Church of Our Lady Cadie suggests that a virgin travelled the fiery lands and aided wherever she got by. Her beauty and benevolence were an inspiration to many people, and thirteen young men in particular would ask for her hand. She refused all of them, but they stayed by her side, ever awaiting her hand in marriage. The story goes on to talk about the many deeds of Cadie, which form the theological basis of Our Lady Cadie, and how she lay the first stone for the Port Woodlay, from where her realm would be built. The thirteen young men crowned her the Queen, and she knighted them. With Cadie's death, they would continue her legacy by crowning the First Shield, and eventually they would rule more land and style themselves as Lords instead of Knights. (The original 13 Knights of Cadie are Saints, though)

Heretics and nonbelievers have other origin stories. Some extremists claim that Cadie was actually called "Kathie", and the thirteen only lusting men who forced their order onto others to claim her heart. Other ignorants claim that it was named "Acadia" shortly after the "doom", with thirteen administrators, who would eventually over time become Lords, and the name would change slowly from Acadia to Cadia and then to Cadie. Naturally, both of those origin stories are considered lies and heresy in the realm and their followers hunted down.

There is not much historical writing in Cadie, but what is known is that after Queen Cadie, the Knights would found their own families (all without love), and fanatically continue to search for the remnants of Queen Cadie. It must have been many years later that a young, beautiful woman claimed to be of Queen Cadie's line. The First Shield confirmed her heritage and married her once she became Queen. Her rule was chaotic and short, however, with Cadie II dying on sea during a storm. The Church nowadays considers her lineage to be a lie, and claims her death was a heavenly intervention, a message to all liars and sinners. For a lifetime, her husband claimed her intentions and words were true. His house would die out not long after his death, with a cousin of a different name taking the family name and hold for himself later.

The last First Shield died only four years ago, so Lord Luthor is thought to rule for a bit longer. The realm is stable and occasionally in contact with other lands.
