Confederate Statue Toppled in North Carolina

Postby Trotza » Mon Aug 14, 2017 8:10 pm

As part of a series of protests in connection to the Charlottesville clashes, protestors in Durham, North Carolina scaled a Confederate monument dedicated to the "soldiers in gray", fastened a rope around it and dragged it down from its pedestal causing it to crumple into the ground. Personally, of all the debate over remaining Confederate monuments around the country and what to do about them, this seems like the worst possible outcome. There was no discussion, no vote, no consensus, just a mob of thugs whipping themselves into a frenzy who found out that damnatio memoriae gives them a hard on. Not to mention that none of them will be punished for this act of public vandalism, as per usual, leading us further into this cycle of allowing criminal property damage and violence as long as it occurred during a politicized riot. If a city or other local entity wants to keep a statue around, let them. If they don't, let the professionals remove it and come up with a museum or private collector to pass it to. ISIS is not a good example to follow when it comes to handling historical artifacts. Thoughts?

Filthy thugs. The statues aren't hurting anyone and shouldn't be taken down by the local government is in the first place, much less by a bunch of violent SJWs... they'll probably get off with a warning or a fine, but I'll hold out hope that their asses rot in prison for this destruction of historical artifacts.

Disgusting destruction of history

Firstly, although I'd like to point out I do not condone Antifa or any other far left movement, and I condemn their tearing down a statue (Especially one dedicated to the soldiers and not the leaders or nation); I am also an American before a southerner, and believe that the Confederacy was a reprehensible organization.

Is that really the person you want standing over the statue you just toppled?

Tearing down a statue is not quite Damnatio Memoraie.

Lots of people tear down statues. The Army did it quite famously in Iraq.

The fact that there are people getting up in arms over this who were completely indifferent about literal Nazis marching around with torches the other day and murdering someone is absolutely fucking abhorrent. Anyone that values a statue (honoring a brutal slave society founded on white supremacy no less) more than a human life is a sorry excuse for a human being and can kindly go fuck themselves.

I hate the Confederacy as much as the next guy, but I wouldn't topple a monument. History is history, whether you like it or not.

Not surprised, just get the police to round up the usual suspects and bill them for the repair. That one reminds me of the one in my hometown, what a shame they did this.

While the confederacy was not the greatest thing in history, and I would never support them. They were still human beings who fought and died for their beliefs that it was state rights over federal superiority. If their descendants wish to honor their ancestors deaths, that should be fine. If their ancestors do not wish to then there should be a vote. This is blatant property destruction and is honestly saddening in regards to the destruction of history. The statue did not glorify the south's vices. It honored those who died. I personally feel it should be respected like any monument to soldiers.

I hope they get the book thrown at them. Plus that was probably not the best person to have the picture taken of, I'm of the opinion to at least look like you belong there when you do something that is supposed to be PR.

Please educate me on how this is "progress" - those statues were no harm to anyone, it's not like they were converting people into White Supremacists, and it's not like White Supremacists will give up their beliefs because you tore down a statue of some 150-years dead southerner. The Romans did fucked up things and had plenty of slaves, they forced some of them to murder each other for public entertainment, so should we tear down the Flavian Ampetheatre in the name of "progress"?

So Americans should be so mentally incapable that they can't handle two incidents simultaneously and separately? Fascinating.

Correct. And can we also add that people who prize statues as a highly symbolic structure, go so far to illegally topple it down and defile it further just to make a statement. Most of these people probably do not know any history of the statue except that the person was part of a "brutal slave society"

The statue honored soldiers who fought for their beliefs of state rights. If the statue glorified slavery I would be one-hundred percent against it, but those who died were still men.

That's really what all this is about, tit for tat, the reason behind the purge of everything confederate in the first place were people wanting to enact some sort of revenge for Dylan Roof.

At least it's not running people over.

They were erected after 1900 and therefore not history...
this just in everyone, World War II is not history because it happened after 1900.
