The Supreme Art of War is to Subdue the Enemy Without Fighting.
- Sun Tzu
Current Date: September 11th, 2001
The world as we know it is unstable and unyielding, monks cast themselves alight, earthquakes kill hundreds, OS X is released, and Organ²/ASLSP begins. The world is forever changing, and such events are merely a sidenote in the game that such a titan plays. You will take the role of a respective nation's leader and a portion of it's occupants as you attempt to not only keep yourself in power, but do the best you can for your nation's people. Regardless of the actions, events, and threats both from within and without, you must stand with your people in A World Ablaze.

THE RULES
Image

  • Requesting to carve chunks out of other nations to add to yours, will not be accepted, and will result in denial.
  • War Boners are not preferred. Not every nation needs to handle things with the barrel of a gun.
  • No creating WMD's unless you have the capability's IRL.
  • One liners and Poor Grammar are considered poor etiquette and are unacceptable.
  • Please refrain from using giant flags in your IC posts.
  • Don't be a dick.
  • Nations composed of many differing states will only be allowed if you give an extraordinarily valid reason.
  • To add to the above, that's only through peaceful means. You can annex whoever, but don't expect a quiet occupation.
  • The Word of OP is law, the word of the Co-Ops is law unless otherwise stated.
  • For the love of god keep text monochrome, we don't need to give someone a epileptic seizure.
  • Reserved status lasts a week or so unless you tell us why you were busy.
  • Poor Spelling, Grammar, and overall Poor writing ARE grounds for application denial.
  • Don't go overboard with gore, violence, etc. Do things in good taste, basically.
  • You're not invincible, nor is your country. Just roll with the punches if shit doesn't work out.
  • In terms of statistics, try to adhere to the most recent ones (as of 2001) available for your nation.
  • Weapons of Mass Destruction are only to be used with extreme discretion and must be approved by the OP before use.
  • No, you can't launch a war without asking the person you're warring against first. Failure to do so will get you in hot water.
  • Weapons development should make sense realistically (ie. No Phased Plasma Rifles in 2010)
  • Generally speaking, Crisis Events will affect everyone.
  • Alternate history nations are acceptable, but the divergence from this timeline must occur at some point between 1993 and 2000 or so and must make at least some sense (ie. no Bolshevik revolution in the United States or Fourth German Reich)
  • Seriously guys, at least be somewhat realistic with your ideas.
  • Have Fun. That's an order.

Character Name Shah Khusrau III

One paragraph history of your country, faction, or unit: In 1993, a cadre of powerful army generals, led by General Khusrau Arslani, led a coup against the Islamist theocratic government in Iran. Rogue units of soldiers poured into Tehran and battled the Republican Guard in the streets. The battle ended with the capture of Ayatollah Khameini and the mass slaughter of the Islamic Republic's top military brass and political leadership, including the President and the Ayatollah. The people of Tehran and most of Iran submitted to his will.

However, there remained pockets of Islamist resistance. In 1995, Arslani proclaimed himself Shah Kushrau III and proceeded to make war on the rebels. Islamist resistance went into hiding, with much of its leadership fleeing to neighboring Afghanistan, where they were sheltered by the Taliban regime. Meanwhile, the new Shah began a complete purge of Iranian society, reversing the effects of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and adopting policies to re-westernize the nation. The Shah banned the niqab and legalized alcohol in Iran; he allowed women to attend schools and universities. However, even though Shah Khusrau III adopted such progressive policies, he maintained a tight grip on the government, saying that "At the present time, Democracy is a luxury Iran cannot afford. Once Iran has purged herself of the Islamist Cancer, then and only then can Iran have Democracy."

And purge he did. The Shah created the Royal Secret Police in 1996 and instructed them to root out any and all subversive and dissident citizens. Suspecting the Kurds of disloyalty, Khusrau ordered the mass execution and deportation of ethnic Kurds within Iran. Between 1996-2000, 500,000 Kurds were killed. The Shah also used Iran's vast wealth (derived from its oil) to create a surveillance state, keeping close watch and tight control on the citizenry. All of this was to contain Islamism and keep it from returning to Iran. However, despite Khusrau's best efforts, Al-Qaeda and the Taliban have struck Iran with terrorist attack after terrorist attack.

In terms of foreign relations, Khusrau has made diplomatic advances towards Russia and China, in the hopes of hedging his nation against possible future "American aggression". Terrorist attacks from Al-Qaeda and the Taliban have soured relations between Afghanistan and Iran, not to mention the fact that the Afghan Taliban regime is currently sheltering some of Iran's Islamist leadership. The Shah has also sought to make allies with his Eastern neighbor, Pakistan and his Western neighbor, Iraq.

In terms of foreign relations, Khusrau repaired relations with his western neighbor, Iraq. In 1997, he and Saddam Hussein met in Tehran and signed a memorandum of mutual forgiveness for the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). This rapprochement with Iraq, earned the Shah the suspicion of the United States. Desiring to hedge his nation against the possibility of an American intervention (remember he was still killing the Kurds and he feard the US would get involved like they did in Serbia), Shah Khusrau signed a pact of friendship with Russia and also China in 2000. Iran has also softened its rhetoric towards Israel, although still refusing to acknowledge its legitimacy. Relations with Afghanistan have remained sour as the Taliban continue to shelter Islamist rebel leaders.

If you could, perhaps make mentions of other national histories a bit vague? Noting that both China and Russia have reserved characters, and the possibility of an Iraqi RPer.

As well as put the flag in a spoiler. It's a bit big.

Nation Name: Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic or "Soviet Republic"

Character Name Boris Samuil

One paragraph history of your country, faction, or unit:
    Image

Despite being propelled into global prominence by the Second World War, the Soviet Union had long played second fiddle to the Western powers. Faced with an authoritarian government and an oppressed population, the Soviets would remain in the shadow of the United States for the duration of the Cold War. Despite all their military might, their inability to manage domestic affairs would continue to plague the nation throughout its existence. As the West modernized and built the world in their image, the East crumbled beneath the weight of bureaucracy and party politics. Not even the Krushchev-era reforms could truly salvage the country, which had been scarred by the Stalin dictatorship. The Union's strength had always been in its military, and though it could flex nuclear power just as well as the United States, it couldn't flex its rivals' industrial might and political freedoms.

While the 1980s brought unprecedented prosperity to the United States, the Soviet Union continued to crumple into obscurity. The Iron Curtain, once so vast and power as to make the Americans think twice, now looked more like a ticker-tape barrier. Increasing economic failure led to demands for democracy, and though they were crushed as they had always been before, it was clear the paradigm had changed. This shift would become apparent in the early 1990s. A coup was launched by party hardliners, who wanted to remove the current leadership and maintain the communist hegemony. While the coup was successful, it would spell the final death of the Soviet Union and with it, the end of an era. Gorbachev was deposed and the party retained power, though the public outrage made it clear that changes needed to be made.

As former Soviet puppets left the Union, the CPSU drafted a new constitution, formally declaring the "Soviet Republic." The Republic would abandon Lenin and Stalin's views of a one-party state, favoring a European-style Parliamentary republic. Though the CPSU still retained considerable power in the reestablished State Duma, it would find itself fighting more moderate Social Democrats and Reactionaries. With a flagging economy and a fledgeling red democracy, the Soviet Republic would look to the future with wary eyes, facing enemies within and without. Even the CPSU itself remains fractured, as former comrades now turn on one another during election cycles, while many still fear the hidden hand of the KGB, headed by the strongman leadership of Vladimir Putin.
    Image

Boris Samuil now leads the CPSU, who have managed to barely maintain a majority hold of the Duma in the recent elections. Facing threats both from his own party and even the intelligence apparatus, it remains to be seen if the aging revolutionary can lead the Republic into a brighter future, or if party politics will spell doom for Russia's first real foray into Democracy since the Kerensky era.

One paragraph history of your country, faction, or unit: The Federal Republic of Germany is the union of the original Federal Republic (West Germany) and the union of The Democratic Republic of Germany (East Germany) in 1990. The reunification of the country achieved in 1990 following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the greater Iron Curtain. Precluding the fall of the Soviet Union and the dismantling of the Warsaw Pact. Following this Germany as a nation seemed stuck in a limbo of sorts. In the newly acquired Eastern states there was a mixture of nostalgia and relief. In the West there was a stagnant economy and a general sense of uncertainty. The domination of the SPD and CDU political parties, a coalition of socialists and conservatives, led by Gerhard Schroder dominated German politics in this timeframe.

Yet, with economic prospects stagnating despite ever growing budgetary surpluses and general indecisiveness by the German political establishment a populist front emerged. Das Dritter Weg or Third Way party, seeking to synthesis the right and left, while playing off the period of nationalism and exuberance at a reunited homeland grew in power. By 1998, the German 14th Federal Elections ended in a resounding victory for the Third Way party. Immediately the German establishment took hold with renewed vigor. Germany took a hard line on non-European immigration in 1999. Revoked guest worker rights for overdue visas in December of 1999, and began a mass deportation of said individuals by February of 2000. All the while promoting greater European unity and progress. Further increased government spending more inline with growing surpluses in the national budget from a massive trade surplus provided a reformed and revamped Bundeswehr. Unemployment dropped to unprecedented levels by March, 2001; however, increasing public sentiment for German unity was rearing its head to destabilize all that the German people had built since the end of World War II. Calling for a unification with Austria and recovery of the 'Old' lands to the East of the river Oder.

One paragraph history of your country, faction, or unit: The Republic of China is founded in 1911 when the Qing Dynasty of China was ousted in the in the Xinhai revolution. However not long after its founding, an ambitious warlord named Yuan Shikai took power in a coup, then quickly lost it when he died. This ushered in the Warlord era of China that lasted from the early 20s to the mid 30s. Sun Yat-sen, the leader of the Nationalist Party of China managed to juggle communist and anti-communist factions in China, forming a cohesive force that managed to reunify China on the eve of the Second World War.

As in real life, China was thoroughly thrashed by an expansionist Japan with Imperialist forces pushing deep into the Chinese core, sacking its capital of Nanjing and forcing the government to relocate inland. The tide eventually turned against Japan when the Soviet Union, a wartime ally pushed the Japanese out of Manchuria and Korea. Relations between the USSR and China soured quickly afterwards when the Soviets refused to hand back captured territory and instead created the Chinese Soviet Republic as a puppet-buffer state along with Mongolia. Dubbed the “Five Lost Provinces” in China proper the Chinese Soviet Republic remained a strong point of contention in Sino-Soviet relations during the course of the Cold War. The aftermath of the Second World War devastated the Chinese economy and drained the government much of its public support. Despite funding from the US, China remained a poor backwater country, plagued by communist insurgencies, coups and counter coups. It remained this way until the late 60s when the country solidified under Party for National Progress (progressive party) that ushered in an era of economic progress that lasted until the mid-2000s. Today, China eclipses even the US in terms of economic output and is behind only the combined economics of the EU.

Relations between the Republic China and the Chinese Soviet Republic remained strained even after the fall of the Iron Curtain although they were not nearly as high as those during the height of the cold war. Unification talks have been in progress for well over a decade though the CSR leadership refuses to relinquish power. Sino-Russian relations is still terrible as China still claims Russian backed Mongolia as well as Russian administered Tyva Republic which China claims Russia illegally annexed.

One paragraph history of your character: President Bo Xilai is of the Progressive Party, which has dominated Chinese politics for nearly 40s years. The Party is created from the merging of smaller socialist factions with nationalist elements that called for greater state control. Bo Xilai demonstrated competence through his management of Chongqing and has the close support of the largest faction within the progressive party. His leadership is challenged by corruption scandals as well as a sluggish economy that.

Now I'm not exactly the best history consultant, but I'm pretty sure that the Soviet offensives against the Japanese Empire at the ass end of the Second World War happened before 1993.

The fact that you didn't consult with the person playing Russia either kinda pops a red flag up.

One paragraph history of your country, faction, or unit: The disintegration of the Soviet Bloc lead to a huge power vacuum in both the Middle East Africa. It also lead to disruptive elements to take root in and around China that threated the Communist Party’s hold upon the nation. The 1991 Gulf War made it obvious to China that its military is both inadequate in modern warfare and that it must take a proactive role in the international stage. The led to an accelerated arms buildup that continues to this day, with the navy and air force being the focus of modernizing efforts. In order to prevent Jihadist rebels from taking advantage of the destabilization of the newly independent Central Asian Republics, China militarily intervened in the 1993 Tajikistani Civil War on the side of the government and began negotiating the establishment of a permanent presence within the region. It supplied Iran with arms during the Iranian revolution and strengthened ties with Pakistan to include a mutual defense pact to guarantee oil supplies.
