The Royal Commonwealth Q&A Thread [2.0]

Postby Palmyrion » Fri Jul 28, 2017 10:26 am

So, after my original Q&A thread sunk into obscurity after the mod-lock (and the subsequent unlocking, provided that the Q&A actually yields in-depth answers instead of just "yes" or "no"), here's the Royal Palmyrian Commonwealth's Q&A thread.

For a primer:
  • Palmyrion is a socially conservative, predominantly Christian nation; 68.1% of the Palmyrian population are adherents of recognized Christian denominations, and the largest is Kogyokist Christianity with 54% of the population being Kogyokist Christians; the other 14.1% are mostly Catholic, with some Protestants and Orthodox in the mix. Meanwhile, 30.9% of the population is Marshite, but there is some debate as to whether or not Palmyrian Marshism is basically Progressive Christianity Renamed. The 1% are either Muslims (0.25%) or atheists (0.75%).
  • Palmyrion considers war as a necessary evil, and always wishes for quick endings to any war. From the start it was for self-defense of the Palmyrian motherland, but with Palmyrian interests worldwide being under constant threat, not to mention the tension brewing up in Western Dienstad, Palmyrion had to build power projection capabilities - which it has in the form of 50 aircraft carriers in 50 Carrier Strike Armadas, and 100 LHAs, 100 LPDs, and 100 LSDs in 100 Expeditionary Strike Groups.
  • Religious tolerance is quite a central tenet in Palmyrian lifestyle; the least you can be is would be as silent as a Kogyokist Christian, and the most you can be is a Marshite who vocally defends religious freedom (no codeword here).
  • Palmyrion has a population of 2,002,040,250; it has a nominal GDP of $100,057,967,614,500, resulting in a nominal GDP/capita of $49,978
  • Pretty much everything else can be read here.

So, go ahead, ask the Lakán any question you have about the Palmyrian dominion!*

*There may be delays, probably because the Lakán is:
  • Playing Warframe
  • Skimming through bills he would either veto or approve
  • Planning the next moves Palmyrion would do in the Pottthani crisis (and the concern that the situation could spill into the rest of Greater Dienstad)
  • Dating with his now reconciled middle-class girlfriend, who is about to enter the Royal Crucible next week

What is your view on nationalism and patriotism and the nations who consider these to be primary social values? Also, do you oppress parents by restricting their rights to control the lives of their children and how? Also why to both.
Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

The above post contains hyperbole, metaphoric language, embellishment and exaggeration. It may also include badly translated figures of speech and misused idioms. Analyze accordingly.

"Being a liberal conservative myself, I espouse all rational views - that is, views that do not explicitly espouse violence. Nationalism and patriotism have brought Palmyrion from its dark times - from the Palmyrian War of Independence (1789-1799), which resulted in the Palmyrian nation becoming a sovereign state by 1800 (the war finished a year earlier, and the nation's first constitution wasn't passed until 1800), to the 4th Palmyrian Civil War (1976-1984), which re-established a reunified Palmyrion after nearly eight and a half decades of strife. However, there are some nations that take this concept of love for one's homeland, of love for one's nation, too far - and they have corrupted the word 'love', for they have begun to wage pointless bloody warfare in the name of nationalism and patriotism. The result: at one end, we have genocides, war crimes, total warfare, and at the other end we have slavery.

TL;DR patriotism and nationalism are beneficial at one end (a nation seeking to lift itself from strife, and seeking to maintain its prosperity in morally acceptable ways), and detrimental at the other (a nation subjugating another under the illusion that the nation they subjugated is inferior to them).

As for parenting, I don't necessarily restrict their rights to control their children's lives. In fact, if I was a parent, I would allow my children to try something new everyday, while I stand back and supervise; should they need help, or if their activities are beginning to be detrimental, that's where I would step in. This is somewhere the State doesn't have that much meddling in, other than including parenting skills in Home Economics classes from Primary II (Grades 4-6) to Secondary (Grades 7-12). That way, students are taught the tenets of a responsible parent (and in turn a spouse, if they ever aren't single parents) who cares for their family; after all, the Palmyrians consider the family as the basic unit of society, and go great lengths to protect such a concept, and the State's efforts in teaching responsible parenting is an example of that in action.

TL;DR we basically teach people from the age of 10 how to be responsible parents; I don't think that passes up as restricting their rights to control their children's lives as they please. In fact, I think it's the reverse: we are reinforcing such a right by teaching responsible parenting, because responsible parents help their children mature properly; if that means having to exact disciplinary measures, so be it. All else settled with, parents should allow their children to try new things, provided the parents supervise them to ensure that their children don't bring harm to themselves or to anyone around them."

What is the current status of religious tensions in palmyrion considering the fact that Kogyokist Christianity is rather fundamentalist branch - and at the same time, Marshism which is known for it's militancy?

"Palmyrion has ended up being a multicultural and multiracial state - a far cry from the Palmyrion of 1000BCE wherein ethnic composition was still purely Palmyrian, with occasional influx of ethnic Marshites and Romandeans.

If anything, both sides have achieved stellar goals in the past because they have worked alongside each other; both have worked alongside each other to help Palmyrion become an independent nation, freeing it from Spanish colonial rule; both sides have destroyed the Lardites that were oppressing anyone who weren't Lardite back when they ruled Palmyrion for a short time; both sides have helped in freeing Palmyrion from the largest pyramid scam that is Communism.

See what both sides were able to achieve by just setting aside their major differences? That is what is happening in Palmyrion now; Kogyokist Christians and Marshites simply settle the ideological score in the debate scene. TL;DR there isn't any major (read: violent) religious tension in Palmyrion between Marshites and Kogyokist Christians."

What is your view on ethnopluralism and isolationalistic ethno-cultural nationalism? Do Palmyrian people still hold on to their cultural and ethnic identity?

Also, what's the status of socialism in Palmyrion, both left-wing and right-wing?

"While Palmyrion is ethnically not a cultural melting pot (seeing as you're either a not-Filipino, a Romandean, or an ethnic Marshite, when you're a natural-born Palmyrian citizen these days), Palmyrion welcomes all ethnicities of all sorts from all over the world. Being the monarch of Palmyrion, I welcome all those who wish to migrate to Palmyrion - but they must go through the legal and proper channels first should they want to immigrate.

I guess I have done quite a good amount of writing on nationalism; a nationalistic soul has helped Palmyrion in the past to be an unprecedented force in achieving the peace and prosperity it deserves, the peace and prosperity it has now. I have also warned about militant/extremist nationalism in one of my previous answers; it leads to unjustified and unnecessary violence in scales minuscule and astronomical.

BTW I must really check my nearest dictionary on the difference between nationalism vs patriotism; honestly, I consider myself more of a patriot than a nationalist.

As for socialism, people have a poor view of such an ideology, having had a horrible experience under a regime with such an ideology. Forced collectivization of pretty much every means of production (that includes agricultural, mineral resource extraction, and industrial), the murder of the "Old Gentry" and "New Gentry" by the large scale, state atheism that stamped out all religion without a tinge of peace - these were all the horrors that the Palmyrians faced during the Communist Era from 1956 to 1984."
