Naming and Common Names in YN

Postby Grazdania » Wed Jul 26, 2017 9:11 pm

Comment with the naming schemes of your nation! How many first names do your citizens typically have? How many middle names? How many names or what part of the names does your government require on official documents? Is there a certain order names in your nation are presented?

Also, list the top ten common male and female first names, and top ten common last names of your nation.

----------------

Naming in Grazdania: the Grazdan government requires a first name, two to three middle names, and a lady name. All names are given by the parents (legally by the father) and while the child may goose to go by another name, the name can never be legally changed. Traditionally these are the Piernazwa (first name), Drugnazwa (second name), Trzecnawa (third name), Dodatnazwa (extra name), and Nazwisko (last name). In Grazdan culture, the first name is unique, and picked for whatever reason the parents choose. The Drugnazwa is almost always named after a famous or important person the child should emulate. The Trzecnazwa is also supposed to be unique, but is not given as much importance as the first name (it is usually a pet name used exclusively amongst family). If a child is given a Dodatnazwa, it is either in relation to the place or circumstances into which the child was born, or named after a close family member.

For example, the full name of Grazdania's Great Leader is Nykyta Bogdan Kuba Wladymyr Kowka ("Nykyta" is the name of several important figures in Grazdan history; "Bogdan" after Bogdan Pasternak, the second Wádny Wódz of Grazdania; "Kuba" after the famous trickster character in Grazdan folk tales; and "Wladymyr" is the name of Nykyta's grandfather, Wladymyr Kowka, who conquered most of Greater Grazdania).

Amenrians don't usually have middle names. People in Central Amenria usually have a given name and a surname, all consisting of one syllable each. Also, Central Amenrian surnames are sometimes written before the given name (e.g Kim Taeyeon, Kim is the surname, Taeyeon is the given name). Many Amenrians have a native name, a name in their native language, and an international name, a name which does not come from the person's native language. An example of this is Heavenly Princess Hyesoo. Hyesoo is her Korean (native) name, and her international name is Intan Dewi Ramadhan.

A list of the most common Zhouranese surnames in Zhouran, in no particular order, as of 2020.

Created in 2,100 BC, the Zhouranese personal naming convention is the traditional way of determining a person's name. The standard structure of a full name consists of a family-name/surname followed by a given name. For formal or respectful usage, a person is referred to by either their whole name, surname, or a hierarchic-pronoun/occupation-title together with the surname, while for informal usage, a person is referred to by their given name.

Derived from that of a paternal ancestor, a surname is passed from father to children. However, a father can give their child a different surname. The given name of a child is decided by both the father and the mother. Traditionally, women do not change their surnames upon marriage, although they can voluntarily change their surname and adopt the surname of their husband as a form of affection and familiarity.

A name in Tekirlemmih requries by law a first name and surname, with the order being Surname first and first name after it. There is a option for one middle name, but these aren't common practice. The surname is either the mother or father, but this depends on family tradition. Surnames featuring "Nos" is from older times when the father's first name was chosen for his male son.

It is also common for first names to be short, as surnames is oftenly long. When parents can't agree upon the surname, it can be combined which results in weird stretches of words. This has been done for some generations, so many are a bit unique.

Naming conventions in Shurtur are similar to old Earth's traditions. Many names have remained the same, while others were lost, and others were added. Patronymics, matronymics, dynasties, and occupations all serve as potential surnames.

Some common names (not necessarily the most widespread):

In Axeshi, you are given 4 different names.

Name 1: Given Name
Name 2: If a boy, his father's 1st name with an affix. If a girl, her mother's 1st name with an affix.
Name 3: Father's family name
Name 4: Mother's family name

(Names 3 and 4 switch depending on the gender of the child)

In areas of Axeshi where a clan system is in place, such as areas with high numbers of immigrants from countries with clans, there is also a 5th name, which is the name of the clan.

A child can have their given name changed once they reach the age of majority - 16.

In Maduakdam, most people have two names. A first name, and a family name. Typically, when married, a woman will change her name to the name of her husband. If the woman is the heir to or holder of a noble or royal title, then she, and her husband, will join their family names, and the child will get the mother's noble name. The king, as well as his heir, and his firstborn (legitimate) child, and so on, have three names, as well as the wife of the reigning king. They have a royal name, which is used in most circumstances, mainly professionally, a personal name, which is what they use in more intimate occasions, and, of course, their royal family name. It has been theorized that once a queen inherits, as legally inheritance is gender equal now, though currently there is no woman (or girl) who is directly down the line of succession, that her name, instead of functioning like other lower female noble title holders, will follow the male traditions.

The ten most common boy's names are
1. Tiscimu
2. Tulazda
3. Beyadu
4. Utaktu
5. Umokhugdu (Commonly abbreviated as Umo, Ugdu, or Umokhu)
6. Mubima
7. Shaguko
8. Shatek
7. Sumuaktu
8. Muzodemo
9. Jubar
10. Tilne (Three years ago it was number six, but it has been rapidly falling in popularity)

The ten most common girl's names are
1. Tula
2. Midukhut
3. Tulaji
4. Sutzi
5. Zausmep
6. Shutu
7. Snukhup
8. Tulaniro
9. Shumu
10. Shanele

There are no outright rules for or against any name, but it is not uncommon for parents to be sued by SZ (Statautasla Zaayukh, basically Welfare of Children, or children's welfare), the main children's advocacy group, and the name can be found inappropriate or damaging to the child's welfare by FmZ (kinda like CPS), and, if the name is especially ridiculous, and considered to be intentionally damaging, then people are often very eager to report the parents to FmZ for hints of abuse, as true unfit naming (pretty much giving your child something intentionally ridiculous just because) is considered a sign that the parent may very well be unfit in other ways.

The Northlandic naming system is controlled by the naming law (Northlandic: Namnlagen) which is a Northland law which requires approval of the government agency for names to be given to Northlandic children. The parents must submit the proposed name of a child within three months of birth. The law was enacted in 1982, primarily to prevent non-noble families from giving their children the names of noble families. The Northlandic Tax Agency administers the registration of names in Northland. The law has been revised since originally enacted; in 1983, it was made possible for men to adopt their wife's or partner's name, as well as for women to adopt their husband's name.

The law states, in part: "First names shall not be approved if they can cause offense or can be supposed to cause discomfort for the one using it, or names which for some obvious reason are not suitable as a first name" (§ 34). This text applies both when parents name their children and when an adult wants to change their own name. When changing a name, the first change is free of charge as long as at least one of the names given at birth is kept, and such a change is only allowed once per person. Further name changes require fee payment. The law states nothing about registering which name is used on a daily basis, but the tax authority can register that if requested.

The most common names in 2016 were:
