Test Cricket — Season Eight

-- NSSport Cricket Discussion Thread
-- Scheduling Thread

This is the thread for scores, rosters and RPs for the eighth season of Test cricket on here. Please do not arrange series on here, head to the SCHEDULING THREAD to do that!

Cricket, can be something of an, ahem, impenetrable sport to get into and understand, so here are a few links for those who might be slightly unsure of what the hell is happening here to look over:
-- Wikipedia page on Test Cricket
-- Explanation of how Test cricket works
-- A Beginners Guide to Cricket (Relatively Lengthy but Very Good!)
-- An image describing common positions players can field at on a cricket field.
-- Types of bowling in cricket.

Additionally, my TG box is always open for any questions related to cricket that you might have! There is something called Test Match Special in England which is a bit of an institution and is a radio program for international cricket occurring with English teams and it can be listened to on the BBC Sport website and could be a good way of improving any cricket knowledge. I often have it on at work in the background!

All games will be scored by me (except for a few where I may be busy and Liventia may step in) using Redballer 2.0. This is an Excel based spreadsheet which has dependencies for ranks and RP, as well as a home ground bonus. You may give any ground a style modifier between +6 and -6, with +6 being a ground where a lot of runs are likely to be scored, while -6 will be a good ground for bowlers and less runs are likely to be scored.

The GCF Season

1. Each GCF season runs for a period decided by the season host. The schedule must afford each nation the opportunity to schedule at least ten Test matches, one per scorination period. (There is no minimum number of Tests.)
2. Tests should not be scheduled for scorination on consecutive days, reflecting the measured pace of Test cricket.
3. Each nation may have at most one Test scheduled per scorination period. Determination of home ground is up to the nations who agree to play.
4. Nations are strongly encouraged to schedule series of two or more consecutive Tests with the same host nation instead of one-offs. Nations are strongly discouraged from playing home-and-away series or two or more one-offs in the same season with the same opponent.

The GCF Rankings

5. Definitions
  • One-off Test: Any Test not part of a series. One-off results are added to ratings of Full Members and Associate Members immediately; for Candidates the results are held until qualification for Associate Member status and then added in.
  • Series: Two, three or more consecutive Tests between the same parties and played in the same host nation. Results for both the series and all constituent Tests are added into ratings only after the series is complete.
  • Match: All Tests and all series are considered matches. A one-off Test is one match. A two-Test series is three matches; a three-Test series, four matches.
  • Full Member (FM): A nation calendared in the current Test season that has accumulated 10 or more matches, counting this season and the most recent completed season.
  • Associate Member (AS): A nation calendared in the current Test season that has completed at least one series but does not yet meet the standard for Full Member.
  • Candidate (CA): A nation calendared in the current Test season that has yet to complete a series.
  • Competitors in the most recent complete season that have not calendared in the current Test season are coded IN for Inactive, or CE if their federation has Ceased to Exist. Records are maintained for a possible return to activity.
6. A Candidate has a rating of 100 for all purposes. An Associate Member whose calculated rating is above 100 averages the calculated rating with 90, rounding towards 100; an Associate Member whose calculated rating is below 100 averages the calculated rating with 110, rounding towards 100.
7. All Full Members average their calculated rating with 100, for their adjusted rating.
8. When rating one nation in a series, if their opponent is rated more than 40 points higher/lower at the start of the series then treat that rating as exactly 40 points higher/lower instead for purposes of this formula.
9. The rating points earned by one nation in a series (or a one-off) equal the opponent's adjusted rating times the number of matches, plus 50 times the number of matches won, minus 50 times the number of matches lost.
Example: Four-Test series, A (rated 125) in B (rated 75). A wins Tests 1 and 4, B wins Test 2, and Test 3 is drawn.

A treats B as if rated 85, and gets (85*5)+(50*3)-(50*1) = 425+150-50 = 525 rating points.
B treats A as if rated 115, and gets (115*5)+(50*1)-(50*3) = 575+50-150 = 475 rating points.

10. A four-step procedure is used to update ratings.
  • a. Add the rating points for each nation to their previous total.
  • b. Add the number of matches played to that previous total.
  • c. Divide the new rating points total by the updated number of matches to get an updated calculated rating.
  • d. Average the calculated rating with the required constant, producing an adjusted rating correct to two decimal places for Full Members and rounded towards 100 for Associate Members.
11. Ratings are based on data from the current season and at the immediately preceding complete season. At the end of each season all older results are purged and ratings recalculated accordingly.

About the Team
With a few years out of the test circuit and relatively poor performance (and advancing years) of some of the team in the T20 tournament, it is a fresh and largely untested team coming into the test circuit this time around.

Jeff Zanzala is a very solid batsmen, one of those players who gradually accrues runs whilst protecting their wicket. Nancy Washington is by contrast a much more explosive player and this can sometimes lead to her giving away her wicket more easily as she chases the big runs. Likely to either make a big score or get out quickly and bad in situations where the team needs to grind down the opponent and bat for a long time. Trajan Muldoney is one of the few players to stay in the side from the T20 World Champs, and he is a good solid batsmen. Sometimes struggles to convert fifties to hundreds, but will usually be good for a score. Alastair Graziani is something of an unknown this high up the order, usually batting at around 6,7 in the ACCT.

Bashar al Menzes would have been the star of the team... five years ago. Still a very decent player, he will be 40 after the Barunia series, and has said he will retire after that. Good with bat and ball, the first true all-rounder in the national side. Below him, Ezra Girard is the teams wicketkeeper, and a useful batsmen to boot, in the usual mold of the shot hitting keeper who is usually just asking to get out at some point. Organa Arrowsmith has narrowly retained her place in the team after the T20s and fills the role of a bowler who can bat a bit, although she will likely use this test season as a chance to stake her claim as an all-rounder.

Rachel Gallegos is a good seamer who can get some real fizz on the ball when needed, as well as being a decent player with the bat, while Duvessa Proudfoot at nine is something of a surprise introduction to the team, and while she can get real swing on the ball on a good pitch, she is quite an erratic bowler sometimes. Tara Kakketa is the change swing bowler and she can whip up some real pace and Roy Hamilton-Randall is the best bowler in the side and can swing the ball both ways.

The wider squad contains dropped T20 fast bowler Jo Frost and spin bowler Tkachuk Nomad as well as young seamer Keswick Dhawa, son of Aram Dhawa, former longtime spinner with the national team who could pick up his debut this season. Enda Bryton is an experienced upper-order batswoman while Trinity Southwold has one setting - big hitting - which is probably more suited to the limited overs form of the game than Test cricket. Anyi Metrophanes gets a late call-up to the squad after a string of good performances in the ACCT and the veteran spinner is the fourth spinner in the squad. Not bad with the bat and might replace Bashar al-Menzes as the teams all rounder after his retirement following the Barunia series.

Darmeni Cricket Board confirms changes to 2037 domestic competition format
40 over experiment in List A, overs to have 8 balls

Following its Annual General Meeting which concluded yesterday in Scott City with the announcement of the 16 player squad which will travel to Eastfield Lodge for a four match test series, also confirmed to format of its upcoming domestic competitions for the 2037 season.

First Class
With the number of First Class clubs rising to 14 with the addition of Tilden CCC, the DCB confirmed that the First Class competition will be split into a Northern Group and a Southern Group, with each group containing 7 teams. Each team will engage in a single-round robin group stage consisting of six matches. The top two teams in each Group will advance to the Group Championship Playoffs of (GCPs), with the winners of those matches meeting in a final Championship Game.

Group stage matches will continue as four-day matches, while the GCPs will be five-day matches. Due to their nature as playoff matches, if any of the GCPs end in a draw after five days of play, the team with the better group stage record will advance to the Championship Game.

The Championship Game will be unique in that it will not be restricted by any time limits. While it is unlikely that a match would last longer than five days, the possibility of a sixth day or even more has been included by the DCB to ensure that the overall champion is crowned on the playing field. It is expected that no play will occur on Sundays.

List A
The Division 1 List A competition will consist of all 14 Division 1 clubs, who will engage in a single round-robin group stage, making for a total of 13 matches, with the top four teams qualifying for the playoffs. The Division 2 List A competition, consisting of only six clubs, will feature a double round-robin group stage of ten matches, with only the top two teams advancing to a single championship game.

The DCB also announced a surprising experiment which will most likely dominate discussion of List A action over the course of the season. Lasting for only a single season, but with the possibility of becoming a permanent change, all List A matches will consist of 40 overs of 8 balls, rather than the international standard of 50 overs of 6 balls. That makes for 20 extra deliveries, or 4 for each bowler who bowls their maximum of 8 overs. The change was made to reduce the number of changes in bowlers being made at the end of every over, and is anticipated to help speed up the game. It is also expected that overall run scoring will be increased as well, although the effect on run rates is unknown.

Twenty20
All Twenty20 competitions will remain the same, with the exception of the change in membership numbers of the first and second Divisions. The two teams which reach the final of the Division 1 T20 playoffs will once again be selected to represent Darmen at the sixth Champions' League T20.

The National T20 Cup will also continue as is, providing an opportunity to Division 3 clubs to play against higher level competition.

Challenges
The First Class and List A Challenges will continue to serve as the DCB's promotion playoffs for Division 2 and Division 3 clubs respectively.

If a single Division 3 club wins both the regular season and post season titles in its Twenty20 competition, it will qualify to face the lowest ranked Division 2 club for a chance at promotion in the List A Challenge. If two different clubs win the regular season and post season titles, the club which advances furthest in National T20 Cup play will qualify to the Challenge.

With four different titles up for grabs in Division 2, split between both List A and Twenty20 competition, the tiebreakers for qualification to the First Class Challenge can be confusing at best. Essentially, whichever of the six Division 2 clubs wins the most combined titles will qualify to play the lowest ranked Division 1 club in a four-day match for a chance at promotion to Division 1. A victory is needed to secure promotion, a draw will not be sufficient.

As has always been the case in Darmeni cricket, relegation from a higher division to a lower division does not exist.

The domestic season will kick off with the first matchday of List A competition on Saturday, May 2nd, two weeks on from the return of the Darmeni National Team from Eastfield Lodge and its four match tour in that fellow Rushmori nation.

The Cricketing Board of Authority has announced its latest 11-man central contracts roster and a further 11-man supplementary contract list, which will form the basis of the squad to tour Apox in Liventia's first Test series of the season.

Long-time former captain Max Finney has been downgraded to a supplementary contract for the first time, a sign that his age is finally being noted by the selectors despite his form showing little signs of downgrading. Bowler Matt Geach has also been downgraded to a supplementary contract. Ollie Kerr retains the captaincy.

First Test lineup against Apox in italics

The CBA also confirms the following six grounds will host Liventia's home Test matches this season:
Matchday 9 v The Kiaser Colonies: Park Central Oval, Orean
A batsman's dream, usually flat as a road. Has produced most of Liventia's highest-scoring Test innings. Capacity: 37,500. End names: Lothian End, Poplar End. (+6)

Matchday 12 v Eastfield Lodge, 1 of 5: The Bastion Dover Cricket Ground, Dover
Traditionally a spinner's paradise, a new pitch was laid before last season and it is now far more even for both bat and ball, but it deteriorates quickly on day 4 to still give the turn players are more accustomed to here. Capacity: 28,225. End names: Town End, Clock End. (-2)

Matchday 13 v Eastfield Lodge, 2 of 5: NCE Oval, City Centre
More in it for the bowlers than at Park Central, but still quite friendly to batsmen. Bowlers will be tested if it's hot. Capacity: 37,000. End names: Pavilion End, Academy End. (+3)

Matchday 14 v Eastfield Lodge, 3 of 5: Folenisa Cricket Ground, Folenisa
Probably the ground which players most enjoy playing at, with both bat and ball able to dominate at times. Look up at the conditions, not down at the wicket. Capacity: 25,600. End names: Desert End, Walton Road End. (±0)

Matchday 15 v Eastfield Lodge, 4 of 5: Park Central Oval
Park Central gets its second Test of the season, with a different pitch to be used. Still won't be anything in it for the poor bowlers. (+6)

Matchday 16 v Eastfield Lodge, 5 of 5: Island Cricket Arena, Schimpol
Max Finney's home ground, and possibly where he will play his final Test. It'd be written in the stars – if he survives the seam and swing the sea breeze can aid. Capacity: 27,500. End names: City End, Mainland End. (-2)

If you RP first and create a scorecard, I ask that you also do one for my side.
Слава Україні!

CBA confirm domestic restructure after years of disorganisation
T20 Super Slog to include qualification to the Champions League
OREAN— Liventian domestic cricket is to be restructured from next season, the Cricket Board of Authority have announced.

The biggest change is to the Twenty20 Super Slog League, which will change from a 10-team single-round-robin tournament to a 16-team competition with four conferences of four. Teams will play each other side in their conference home and away, and each conference will be paired with another one with one round of cross-conference games for a total of 10 games per side. The four conference winners, plus the next four best teams based on conference-only results, will qualify for the elimination phase.

The 10 traditional first-class sides keep their place in the Super Slog League, with the other six teams to be decided by the best regional teams from the Carvenlo National Cup (with second XIs of the first-class sides ineligible to qualify). As a result, the Carvenlo National Cup loses its status as the Liventian qualifying tournament for the Champions League T20, with the two Super Slog finalists now qualifying.

Liventia's domestic one-day tournament, the Liventia Airways Trophy, remains a 50-over competition, with two groups of six (the 10 first-class sides, and the two minor-league teams Pegasus A and Pegasus B). All games will have List-A status, including games involving the two Pegasus sides. Teams will play single-round-robin in the first stage, with the group winners qualifying for the semi-finals. The next two teams in each group qualify for the quarter-finals.

First-class cricket remains a four-day affair, with the National Championship remaining at two divisions of five teams each playing home and away. The top two teams in the first division will play in a five-day final – if drawn, the league winners will be champions – while the side in fifth will be relegated to be replaced by the second division winners. The side in fourth will play a four-day relegation playoff against the second division runners-up, with a draw resulting in the status quo (the second division team must win to be promoted).

Teams will be allowed a maximum of two overseas players per first-class or List-A match. The professional teams in the Super Slog League will be allowed a maximum of three overseas players per match, and the regional sides may play a maximum of one overseas professional per match.

Players on CBA central contracts may play for their clubs, but their availability will be dictated by the CBA, who will pay the full value of their contract. Players on incremental (supplementary) contracts may play for their clubs, and will be available more than centrally-contracted players, but their availability will still be dictated by the CBA. These players' wages are part-funded by their clubs (30%-50%), with the rest being paid by the CBA.

While it will never rival the nation’s most popular sports, cricket’s popularity grew rapidly with the influx of immigrants from the nearby Candelariasian Archipelago. Consequently, it occupies a place in the pantheon of Sargossan sporting endeavour.

Squad

Coach

Arthur Pond (Candelaria Exiles / Larissa)
Quiet and unassuming, the sudden blare of the spotlight has probably come as a bit of a shock. Has turned the Exiles into the dominant force domestically and is doing the same with Larissa in the longer form.

Starting Eleven

Juan Martín Sainz (Jucaro Manta Rays / Midea)
Opening batsman who is often described as fearless. Sadly the boundaries between brave and stupid can get a little blurred. As likely to be out for a duck as a hundred.

Jacob Aldren (Candelaria Exiles / Larissa)
This thoughtful left hander forms an interesting opening partnership with the fiery right handed Sainz. An accumulated rather than a big hitter who always seems to find a little space in which to steal a single, whether that will prove enough is open to debate. Also bowls decent offspin and captains the side.

Ricky Robertson (Candelaria Exiles / Larissa)
Top scorer in last season’s domestic 20/20 tournament. Attempts the paddle scoop so often it’s now colloquially described as ‘pulling a Ricky’. Slightly quieter in the longer form, but not by much.

Ivan Correa (San Marquez Scimitars / Sargosso)
Arguably the best of all the Sargossan that don’t have the benefit of Candelariasian blood. Surprisingly topped the scoring charts in the Super-10 .

Julio Edwards (Candelaria Exiles / Larissa)
A heavy run scorer in the middle order who can also be relied upon to deliver some surprisingly effective medium pacers.

Miguel Franco (Goza Giants / Goza)
Experienced middle order batsman with years of professional experience to fall back on. Often a calming influence on those around him. How important that could be.

Jesús Cabral (Valera Victory / Sargosso)
An agile presence with the gloves but his batting can be hit and miss. Quite literally.

Nahuel Guerra (San Marquez Scimitars / Larissa)
A veteran left arm spinner who is capable of tying opposition batsman up in knots. He also boasts a more then decent economy rate and, with an average of 30, knows one end of the bat from the other.

Federico Carvallo (Candelaria Exiles / Larissa)
Of Marquezian descent. Comfortably the fastest of the Sargossan bowling attack. Can be devastating one day and then blasted all over the park the next. Likely to open the bowling.

Jordan Young (Candelaria Exiles / Larissa)
An accurate fast/medium paced bowler who enjoys much consistency in the domestic game. Set to open the bowling with clubmate Carvallo.

Andrés Ruiz (Porto Alegro Pirates / Sargosso)
Medium pacer with bags of experience and a cool head on his shoulders. Often called on to close out tight matches in the short form competitions. Fairly useless with a bat in his hands.

Twelfth Man

Juan José Murillo (Soluca Sentinals / Sargosso)
Upper order batsman who often takes up the gloves. Probably first choice in the shorter form of the game but narrowly edged out of the starting eleven by Cabral here.

Apox Suffer Shambolic Loss to Top Ranked Liventians

The Apoxian national cricket team today suffered their heaviest defeat in Test cricket to the top ranked Liventians, losing the series in the process. Marshall Lane in Gwinevra is a wicket which is notorious as being one which favours bowlers.

You wouldn't have guessed that though, watching the Liventian's first innings. While our bowlers managed to keep the run rate down and ask questions of the Liventian batsmen, shown by James Quinn edging an outswinging Hamilton-Randall ball through to Ezra Girard with the score on nine. It would prove to be the happiest the Apoxian team would be all match, with Max Finney and Dylan Hennessey putting on another hundred between them, Hennessey falling on 59 shortly after lunch on the first day. Debutant Dave Edwards came in at four though, and instantly looked at ease, blatting the ball all around the ground as together him and Finney put on 95 more runs together, Finney getting his hundred in the process and then getting out shortly before the close of play.

The second day remained all about Dave Edwards, with Goudreau and captain Kerr supporting him throughout the day, with the team approaching 350 at lunch on the second day, and Edwards getting a test century on debut shortly before lunch. Kerr fell after al-Menzes managed to get a bit of swing on a faster ball, nicking it through to Girard behind him, with the team over four hundred and Kennedy on 149. He piled on more runs just after tea and was eventually caught on the pad by Bashar al-Menzes with 14 overs left to play in the day.

Apox were therefore set the formidable target of 455 on very much a bowlers ground, and with the light fading and the ball swinging, Adams and Geach cut through the top order of the Apoxian attack, Nancy Washington out on the fourth ball of the innings, attempting a weak drive which Max Finney caught easily in the covers. With Muldoney trapped lbw by a good ball and Alastair Graziani and Bashar al-Menzes falling rapidly, the team ended the day on 37 for 4.

Morning did not bring better news, with the Liventians cutting through the rest of the side, brief stand between Jeff Zanzala and Rachel Gallegos aside. Once Zanzala, who had watched the rest of the team fall apart around him was out lbw there was no hope and the team slumped to 82 all out. The Liventians wasted no time in sending us out to bat once more.

This innings did not start any better, with Jeff Zanzala getting an almost imperceptible edge off Adams and Washington both getting out early - Washington seemingly unable to calm down and grind the Liventian bowlers down. Trajan Muldoney, with Alastair Graziani and Bashar al-Menzes briefly anchored things down, but with al-Menzes unable to stay in long enough to begin moving through the gears, another tail end batting collapse ensued, with Trajan Muldoney really being the only player to have committed himself fully all match, his 61 not out off 171 balls, a stoic stay at the crease, being the best Apoxian performance of the game. The Liventian attack, and especially Jonathan Adams and Matt Geach, were lethal all game and seriously outclassed a team who have a great deal of work to do before they can truly hold their own against the best.

The final game will be a pose questions of Bashar al-Menzes and the selectors, with about half the team currently struggling for form. Nancy Washington hasn't looked at all proficient at number two, scoring 7, 17, 0 and 18 in her four innings so far. Organa Arrowsmith is meant to be a strong all rounder, but so far has looked shot of form with both bat and ball. Alastair Graziani is yet to make a big score, and currently fills an important batting slot in the team, while Duvessa Proudfoot and Tara Kakketa have not bowled as well as they might be expected to, Proudfoot in particular having little impact in her spells bowling so far.

Provisional Euran Test Squad to for GCF8

Staff

Head Coach: Michael Overdale
Fitness Coach: Callum Oldey
Batting Coach: Graham Keane
Bowling Coach: Daniel Aldair
Fielding Coach: Jeremy Davis

The Euran Test side is back after a long break from international Test match cricket, the result of numerous goings on in the Euran domestic game and a major legal battle over control of the sport in the country. Finally the Euran side, which showed so much promise especially during GCF Seasons 3 and 4, is back. Some of the names from the original team have retired in the ten years or so since but much of the core of that Euran team remain, either old but still experienced enough to warrant selection, or in their prime age compared to that youthful squad of years ago. In fact the upper batting order is (for the moment at least) almost unchanged from that era. Marking their return is a big test in the arranged games so far; a three match series has been sought with Liventia, who famously toured Eura during GCF4 winning the series 2-1 after some memorable underdog performances by the hosts, which should have been the launch pad for a much more successful Euran Test team. Shaun Folkstone, Alan Royce, Tom Grant, Andrew Elland and Greg Lark will be hoping to remind the Liventian's of their potential then and now (though at 36 it may be a bit late for Royce). Captain Tristran Lewis, now 40, has announced he will retire at the end of the Liventia series, but it remains unclear whether or not the selectors will pick him for all of the games anyway. Following that series, Eura will host Qasden for two tests. The Euran Cricket Association intends to arrange at least one more series, most likely a tour abroad, in the coming season.

Stadia
Stadium – Location – Club – Capacity – Style Modifier

Brigham Oval – Brigham - Brigham CC - 90,000 - 0 – This huge arena is hallowed ground for Euran cricket and is probably the nation’s most balanced Test pitch. Its gargantuan banks of safe standing terraces split over two tiers are unusual to say the least, but also representative of the huge popularity of cricket in the region and the boisterous fans who turn up. Make no mistake, in terms of noise, this is the most intimidating venue in the country. The pitch is of a good quality and usually slightly green, making it fertile ground for bowlers (especially in overcast conditions) but usually a firm enough batting wicket for good batsmen to score on. Selected for 1st Test v Liventia

Directus County Cricket Ground – Ramsey, Directus – Directus CC – 72,500 - minus 3 - Beware, for spinners lurk at the DCCG. Directus is notorious in Eura and maybe even a bit controversial for its pitch, which almost always forms a hard surface for pace bowling and scoring runs at first before degrading into a cracked minefield on which spin reigns supreme. Euran opening batsman Alan Royce is a specialist at his home ground, and touring teams should plan thoroughly for facing the spin bowling of another local, Greg Lark. He regularly wins games for his club here and could be a deadly proposition to bat against on a fourth or fifth day pitch. Stadium itself is surprisingly flat for a big ground like Brigham, which partially explains how the middle can end up like a dustbowl in hot weather. Selected for 2nd Test v Liventia

Castle Green – Bastion – Capital CC – 81,235 – plus 3 – The most historic things in Eura usually reside in Bastion’s old centre despite the turmoil they have had to survive in the past. Castle Green is no exception, embedded deep within a megacity that now extends for dozens of miles in every direction. Expansions and renovations in the past have given it a formidable capacity but the stadium is not new or fresh. It has three different unique designs of stand plus a huge pavilion. Castle Green is a firm batting wicket and well maintained but certainly not flat, meaning pace and good batting sides usually duke it out for the spoils. Selected for 3rd Test v Liventia

Steel Field – Holdenberg – Holdenberg CC – 68,450 – plus 4 – Hardy as its massive workforce, the Steel Field pitch lives up to its name as a rock hard track favouring batsman with only aggressive fast bowlers likely to succeed against them. The stadium itself is large with steep sides, but one noticeably smaller quarter of the oval encirclement hosts an older stand and the classic pavilion. Selected for 1st Test v Qasden

The Waterfront Bowl – Falourr – Falourr CC and formerly Docklands CC – 52,000 – minus 5 – The Waterfront is quite unlike other cricket grounds in the east of Eura in that it is not dry and does not experience long periods of little wind and noticeable heat due to its proximity to the Endemian Ocean. When it’s hot in Falourr it is humid, and when it is cold in Falourr it is just wet. A perfect playground for swing bowlers and very difficult to bat on. This ground is the most likely to experience rain delays but also has the most sophisticated systems for dealing with them. It is a thoroughly modern and recently upgraded stadium but also a remarkably beautiful one, similar in design to the Aspel Dellaro football stadium in Sameba which is chiselled into the coastline comfortably above the water level. Selected for 2nd Test v Qasden

Squad
Name - Age - ECC club - Bats - Bowls - Playing style notes

Batsmen

Alan Royce - 36 - Directus - Left - Left Arm Med - A formidable opening batsman who is difficult to get out once he gets in and scores quickly (hit a Euran Test high score of 201 against Liventia). Keeps his shots low. Weakness is fast bowling at legs.

Tristran Lewis (Captain) - 40 - Holdenberg - Right - Right Arm Med - Considerate batsman who scores slowly but consistently, excellent defensive play. Age is catching up with him and may be at risk of run outs.

Andrew Elland - 32 - Brigham - Right - Right Arm Off Spin - The flashiest of the top four batsmen who seeks to score quickly and is quite the shot player. Very able against spin. Less good against real pace and bounce.

Liam Tunbridge - 31 - Brigham - Right - Right Arm Med - Similar to Elland but more functional and arguably the best batsman in the team, with a cooler head and little ego. Most likely of top four to go for big shots and physically imposing.

Matt Leech (Vice Captain) - 34 - Spartans - Right - Right Arm Med - Most aggressive of the upper order batsmen with excellent technique. Vulnerable to leg spin and spin in general. The most capable bowler of the non-bowling specialists, has taken wickets at Test level. A real fighter who has defied expectations to compete and unsurprisingly the biggest sledger on the team.

Cameron Lawson - 27 - Harther - Left - Left Arm Med - Talented but inconsistent opener who has the ability to get big scores, but takes too many risks and has lapses of judgement. Risky choice at the top level.

Dominic Barry - 36 - Hornchurch - Left - Left Arm Med - Middle order batsman of county quality. Solid defensive play and doesn't take risks but could be shown up against top level seam and swing.

All Rounders and Wicket Keepers

Tom Grant - 29 - Holdenberg - Right - Right Arm Fast Med - Bombastic player and a bit of a cult hero in Eura. Has a very good record in Tests and international club cricket despite the circumstances of Euran cricket in recent years. Sometimes careless when batting but a serious threat if allowed to get in, powerful batsman who can score for fun and unsurprisingly is very handy in T20 and ODI formats too. Equally menacing as a bowler due to ability to get swing and seam movement in varied conditions. Will often be the key to unsettling high quality batsmen due to determination and skill.

Shaun Folkstone - 29 - Harther - Right - Right Arm Fast - Eura's best hope when they first got going and perhaps still the star. Started his career purely as a bowler but some spectacular batting performances in Tests transformed him into an all rounder partner for Grant. Has the ability to score big runs as a batsman if Eura need them, thriving when under pressure. His true calling is as a leading bowler despite stats often indicating otherwise. Blistering pace (the only Euran who bowls consistently over 90mph) and his accuracy on line and length make him a difficult prospect to bat against, but on pitches unfavourable to pace bowling he usually has to take on a defensive role.

Tim Carpenter - 30 - Capital - Right - Right Arm Slow - A seasoned wicket keeper who has a strong leadership influence on the team. Definitely the best Eura has had behind the stumps. Very capable as a batsman too though not quite as threatening as his predecessor Jeremy Davis. Likes a good slog if the situation requires it.

Jason Perry - 28 - Directus - Left - Left Arm Off Spin - Unusual for a wicket keeper in that he isn't that good at batting, not a tail end batsman but lower order. Questionable record in top level cricket. Nevertheless can be found at his best on spin friendly pitches with close fields, a very concentrated figure who plays to win.

Bowlers

Andy Harrison – 31 – Capital – Right – Right Arm Fast – The nearest the team has to the perfect ideal of a hard hitting seamer. Pacey and tall, extracts maximum bounce from hard pitches and gets surprisingly good movement off the seam. Like Folkstone he can struggle in unfriendly conditions and leaks more runs than Folkstone or Grant regardless. Least consistent of those three bowlers but probably the most intimidating for batsmen who struggle against short balls.

Greg Lark – 32 – Directus – Left – Left Arm Spin – Usually pundits talk about Eura’s untapped potential in terms of Elland, Tunbridge, Grant, Folkstone. Lark is the anorak’s choice for Eura’s key player. The most intelligent player in the side and the most reliable. Years of bowling on Eura’s dry eastern and humid south western wickets has made him a deadly opponent even for top level batsmen, as they found out last time Eura played Tests regularly. Unorthodox for a left arm spinner in that he can spin both to off and leg effectively. Most dangerous on dry pitches against boxed in batsmen looking to score runs.

Nick Fodrell – 33 – Falourr – Right – Right Arm Off Spin – A much more conventional bowler than Lark and has a lower skill ceiling. However he can be very effective at containing batsmen and bringing down the run rate, and is adept at taking care of lower order batsmen overstaying their welcome. Much more likely than Lark to be hit around the ground and won’t play in games where Eura need four pace bowlers.

Oscar Greenwood – 25 – Spartans – Right – Right Arm Fast Med – Fine seamer who will likely be picked for games where neither a second spinner or another batsman are needed. Very good at club level but yet to translate this to the international stage and has lots to prove. Lacks control during long periods of bowling yet he does have a record of getting wickets.

Rhys Higgins – 22 – Borderlands – Left – Left Arm Fast Med – Great ability but also inexperienced, this bowler for the small County club of Borderlands has been a real headache at club level on green southwestern pitches, troubling all kinds of batsmen with his controlled demeanour and difficult to read seam bowling.

Apox Whitewashed in Dwile

The third and final test of the home series against world number ones Liventia was today completed. While certainly a better performance from the side with Nancy Washington batting better at four than opening for example, it was still a loss and shows that, in this current form, this Apoxian side is can not yet be considered a side truly ready to battle with the best of them.

On a windy and overcast first morning, Bashar al-Menzes won the toss and elected to bowl against the Liventians. While the wicket was definitely in favour of the bowlers, the Liventian openers proved hard to crack, settling down and seeming content to wait for the bad ball. It wasn't mid morning, with the ball becoming slightly more unpredictable with age that the first wickets fell, with Organa Arrowsmith in particular finally showing her abilities with the ball along with Roy Hamilton-Randall, who looks to be the bowler upon which this attack largely hinges on. For the Liventians, James Quinn was the key man early on, until he misjudged a full length ball and got a thick edge to Trajan Muldoney at gully. Goudreau played well, assisted by Kennedy but the rest of the lower order failed to score and Liventia were all out midway through the third session for a very gettable 205.

Conditions remained hard on the evening of the first day and Alastair Graziani and Trajan Muldoney were out to good swinging balls, leaving Apox at 65-2 at the close of day. Despite looking a little brighter the next morning, Liventia struck early to take the wicket of Zanzala. The pitch became more and more susceptible to spin and the rest of the team were whittled through fairly quickly, despite a short partnership between Nancy Washington and Organa Arrowsmith, two players whose places in the side are currently very much in doubt.

So Liventia returned to the wicket with two overs remaining before lunch and they promptly set about making a mockery of the Apoxian struggles in the middle, with James Quinn and Dylan Hennessey piling on the runs very quickly after lunch and reaching tea with the score at 201-3 with the prospect of another massive Apoxian defeat looking very real indeed. However, Roy Hamilton-Randall had one of those lethal spells of his, getting the wickets of MacMaster, Kennedy and Quinn all in quick succession, the wicket of Quinn being particularly important after an excellent hundred. Kakketa took the final wicket of Ollie Kerr, who declared right at that moment, with five overs of play left in the day and the Liventian lead of 361 with just over two days left to play.

So the third innings in one day started, Jeff Zanzala and Alastair Graziani walking out to warm applause with the knowledge that, with two days and a large amount of determination, this match could be won. It did not get off to a good start, Graziani failing to get any kind of score, and the day ended with Apox on 7-1.
During the next day, the wickets just kept falling and no real partnership was able to be established after Zanzala and Muldoney were out in quick succession, with Bashar al-Menzes coming in with the side on 67-3. He looked resilient all day and could have likely stayed in and scored many of the runs on the way to a famous victory - had he not run out of batsmen at the other end. However, his 100 not out is an excellent innings and is the first Apoxian century of the Test season.

Next up the team travel to the slightly weaker Barunians, and we will need to start winning more matches if we want to regain our status as one of the stronger test teams on the circuit.

The Barunia Cricket Federation has hastily named a squad for the series against Apox, which starts in the nation's capital in less than a week. The team features players from the last World T20, quelling rumours of an imminent cull following the team's poor performance. How many survive to the second test in Fairweather remains to be seen, with Cricket Barunia hinting at the possibility of high rotation.

The series itself is an important one for Barunia, who are currently the lowest ranked full-member nation in test cricket. After a recent run of poor performances in the shorter formats, Barunia are looking to rebuild into a cricketing powerhouse. With only three test series scheduled for Barunia this summer (with one, against Tobiasia, still to be confirmed), every game is vital for picking up those ranking points.

The first test of the summer kicks off at home for Barunia, with the Blue-caps hosting Apox at the Porthaven Cricket Ground. The tour then heads to Marion and Fairweather Cricket Ground, before the series is wrapped up at the home of Barunian cricket, Newland Cricket Club Ground.

The PCG curators have predicted a spin-friendly track, and Barunia have named the top three tweakers in the country - veteran round arm slinger David Noble, leggie Zane Adams, and exciting off-spinner Vince Cooper. Also included is Matt Dougherty, who adds a potential fourth option with his occasional left-arm leg-breaks. Dougherty was advanced into the side ahead of Jane Dyson, who has been struggling with the bat of late. Dyson will carry the drinks, and will have to wait for her chance to be the first female to earn a Barunian test cap. Dyson opened with Tim Waterman in the 9th World T20, and Ben Lockwood has been promoted up the order. Barunia have struggled to find a solid opening pair since the retirement of Jon Doveson.

Resume of the recent history of the Cricket in Lisander (and Alice Bay)
and GCF Test Season 8 General Information

Little media attention, lack of interest from sponsors, elitism and even some class prejudice, make Cricket pass away from Lisander's most popular sports list. Much behind Rugby and Football, behind even sports like Baseball and Tennis, this sport has gained some presence in the media due to the expansion of sports channels on Pay TV. Champions League T20 games sometimes appear on sports channels.

Most people know or have played backyard cricket, which in Lisander is called "hit the can". Kids play with any piece of wood as bat, empty soda cans in place of wickets and tennis or baseball balls.

The Lisander Cricket Board has assembled teams a few times, to play against nations like Alice Bay, Ariannin and Grand Merina, always with decent results. Alice Bay, Lisander sister nation, also has a similar history, however the Cricket is more popular there. The desire to unite the two boards was old, since a multinational board would be able to gather more interest, but there were never any clear plans for geographic reasons. Although they share the same head of state, possess trade agreements, currency parity, and similar economic systems, Lisander and Alice Bay are on opposite sides of the world.

Lisander's entry into Test Cricket, season seven, rekindled hopes of a unification. The results, a win and a defeat against Ethane in Lisander, with small attendance, lighted a warning signal in the LCB. It would not be possible to move the local Cricket with so little support. Confirmation came with the World T20 in Damukuni. Serious problems in the organization of the team, including the boycott of many athletes, led Lisander to a fickle campaign (A bad result was expected, but not that bad) with only one victory.

Image

But every obstacle has an opportunity beneath it. The fiasco in Damukuni was the missing incentive for the union to actually take place. "You have the money and Associate Member status, but you need good players. We have fanbase and expertise, but no international tradition. We get together, from the next test season, and we can finally do something, "said Alice Bay, and Lisander agreed. The Newly-formed Lisander and Alice Bay Cricket Board retains the Associate Member status from Lisander, but now with access to Alice Bay teams, players and venues. The Newport Oval (in Newport, AB) will be used for the first match of the new team, an one-off against Elejamie, before the great challenge of the season, against Apox. By the way, LCB still searches for adversaries to round 9 to 11.

In addition, the new LCB also studies ways to join the Champions League T20. A franchise system is being planned for an international league, bringing together teams from Lisander and Alice Bay. The project has the temporary name of "LCB T20 ProHit", and is likely to prospect for foreign players soon.

THE ROSTER

The list of central contracts for the season features the sixteen names entered for GCF Test Season 8, which will also be the team for 10th GCF World Twenty20. The LCB reported that despite the interest, could not put a mixed team at the Olympic Games, so they chose to stay focused on the Tests, which although few, will do much more effect in the Cricket of the two nations. For the next season of contracts, LCB intends to separate the Test contracts from the T20 contracts for a specialization.

THE UNIFORMS

LCB signed a deal with Neo to produce its new uniforms, replacing previous shades of green (for Lisander) and Blue (for Alice Bay) for a dark shade of teal, the color in between. Neo is a local brand that also supplied the lisanderian olympic team. Lisander whites have dark teal details. Breckland IPA keeps as sponsor from last season.

First win of the season in a close game against Barunia

Some questions over the ability of the Apoxian batters were definitely answered with a fine performance by Apox on the Fairweather Cricket Ground. Enda Bryton seems to have answered the question of who will partner Jeff Zanzala at the top of the order, with the pair putting on 99 and setting up a good base for the Apoxian first innings. Zanzala was supported by Muldoney and Washington, though he scored the majority of the runs in those partnerships. Bashar al-Menzes and Organa Arrowsmith put on a good partnership for the fifth wicket but Arrowsmith was the main run controller in the latter order and wickets continued to fall gradually, Arrowsmith eventually going for 63, her first test half century, with the score at 302 for 9.

With Tara Kakketa and Roy Hamilton-Randall not putting many more runs on the board, the final score was 318 all out. With the Barunian's put out to bat, it was Rachel Gallegos who looked the most lethal with the ball, getting the key wickets of Lockwood, Price and Smith and ending with figures of 5-51, Anyi Metrophanes being the only other player to take more than a single wicket.

The second Apoxian innings was dominated by Trajan Muldoney's excellent 137, his first international century. With Bryton and Zanzala failing to get large scores, Gallegos was the brought in as a nightwatchman, managing to stay in overnight, with the score being 98 for 2 at the end of play on the second day. The second day, with the spinners generating a lot of difficult balls made scoring very difficult, and Trajan Muldoney with Nancy Washington and then Bashar al-Menzes very slowly accumulating runs and grinding down the spin heavy Barunian attack, with Muldoney reaching his century with the score at 289 for 4 off 302 balls, al-Menzes being out for 58 shortly afterwards, with al-Menzes declaring with the score on 314 after Muldoney was out, with a lead of 361, and 2 overs left to play, with Roy Hamilton-Randall finishing the day with 1-1 from his over.

So Barunia needed 360 from the final days play, with the score on 2-1 when play started. However, the surface was good for spin and Organa Arrowsmith did well to take three wickets, with the bowlers generally spreading the wicket taking around and Roy Hamilton-Randall being five balls into his new spell to take the final wicket of Zane Adams to complete the first Apoxian win of the season.

Therefore, the series is all to play for at the NCCG, with the series currently even at 1-1, with the game set to be Bashar al-Menzes last ever international match.

Goudreau injury hits Liventia ahead of Eura tour
Brigham, EURA— Liventia will be without a key man for their forthcoming three-Test tour to Eura following confirmation that wicketkeeper Garland Goudreau has been sent home with a broken finger.

Goudreau picked up the injury in training after mistiming a catch off a bowling machine, and sees Liventia without an established number five for the series.

With two other wicketkeepers in the side, no replacement has been called up to the touring squad, which is now 21 strong and otherwise unchanged from the side that achieved a sweep on the tour to Apox.

Dave Edwards, who made a less-than-believable start to his Test career with a remarkable 171 on debut as Liventia smashed Apox by an innings in the second Test at Gwinevra, is likely move down to five with John Millbank returning to the side, while one of the bowling all-rounders Ruairidh MacMaster or Francis Kennedy is likely to be dropped to accommodate Michael Sarrin at seven depending on the state of the pitch at the toss.

Liventia side for first Test v Eura: JCA Quinn, MA Finney, JS Millbank, DA Hennessey, DHJ Edwards, OH Kerr*, MQ Sarrin†, RJ MacMaster, MC Geach, DM Quinn, JPK Adams; 12th men: SV Finney, BL Kerr
