UK Politics Thread VII: Wake me DUP inside [can't wake UUP]

Postby Souseiseki » Mon Jun 26, 2017 2:34 pm

Welcome to the UK Politics Thread: A thread for politics, politics in the UK. PolitUKs.

Last time we checked off Theresa May called a snap election after repeatedly saying she wouldn't in anticipation of getting a stunning majority. Having proceeded to waste a 25+ point lead over the opposition and end up losing said majority, she has given the nation repeated assurances that she is "not owned, not owned" and stayed in power by negotiating a deal with the DUP, a party with "eccentric" views. This has lead to fun questions such as "does this violate the Good Friday Agreement", "did we just waste our first months of Brexit negotations on making our government even more unstable" and "did we seriously just pledge to spend £1.5bn pretty much entirely to prop up a government that couldn't get into power otherwise", all of which and more you will be able to discuss in the latest incarnation of the exciting UK Politics Thread. (For the record, my answers are "maybe", "yes" and "yes".)

Just as the UK enters a new era of post-election fun, we too shall celebrate the old thread hitting 500 pages by entering a new thread, a new age of funposting. How symbolic!

Bring me back to liiiiiife...

But in all seriousness, this government could go either way. Could be the shortest government in living memory, could be a surprising longterm success. We'll see by the summer of '22. Or the summer of '18, depending on how optimistic you feel.

It's honestly looking very doubtful that this Government will last very long, even with the DUP deal.
By the way, that is one creative thread title.

So Nigel Farage decided to have a go at the BBC for political bias because they covered Jeremy Corbyn appearing at Glastonbury.

And it turns out that it might not have been that well thought through, because people have long memories, and can do maths a bit better than he can.

Farage :- Why should we pay the BBC licence fee just so they can promote @JeremyCorbyn? Outrageous.

Farage :- Have this lot had a look at what they're actually supporting? Google 'Marxism'. #Glastonbury

Farage has been on BBC Question Time around twice a year (the 10th most popular in the history of the show) despite never being elected to Parliament. And despite the fact UKIP have never managed more than two MPs in Parliament since 2010, they have appeared on 25% of Question Time shows since 2010.

These facts were quickly pointed out to them by several tweets in tones ranging from insulting to sarcastic, but all of them quite amusing :)

UKIP had seat on 25% of Question Time shows since 2010. Never had more that 2 MP's. Didn't moan about that, did you?

*Tweeted from UKIP's permanent seat on the BBCQT panel, while preparing to comment on something he's no part of whatsoever on BBC News.

General election 2017:

UKIP - 594,068 votes
Labour - 12,877,869 votes

2167% more exposure is therefore democratically representative.

It's stating the obvious, but don't remember you complaining when they were giving you so much airtime?

I half wish Nigel had done a Glasto speech so I could count all the bottles of warm piss chucked at him. Daphne & Celeste all over again.

Go on Nige, walk on the Glasto stage. I'm fairly sure the BBC would happily broadcast what happens for, er, balance.

When is this washed-up has been going to accept he literally has no relevance in modern life any more, and just fuck off? I would say "and just join all the other has been MPs" but lets face is - to be a "has been MP" he would have to - at one point - actually been an MP :)

Great point!
I think, like UKIP, that he's just trying to find an excuse to stay relevant by focusing negative attention on other people. He's irrelevant and unwanted in British politics - if that wasn't the case, he would have served as an MP by now.

It seems to me as an outsider that Brokenshire was already in way over his head as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. He's going to have a real mess on his hands. Does anyone have confidence in him?

Foreign entryists? How dare you, sir. We Australians've got the same Queen, which basically makes me English as far as Tony Abbott was concerned. He didn't manage to get us his dream of becoming a devolved parliament within the home countries, sadly, but he's still plugging away at that one.

Speaking of which, what's the coverage in the UK like of the formal DUP deal? I'm assuming reasonably negative. Do we have any Northern Irelanders around?

I'm interested to know if there's any hints of how their electorate feels about the DUP right now.

Death camps for Ulster's native Irish Catholics are inevitable now. May won't dare lift a finger; she depends on the DUP now for not getting her arse tossed out.

It's crunch time in Stormont, since without a deal today a new power sharing agreement can't be arranged and the assembly will shut down. Since the DUP and SF hate each other's guts more than ever, this seems highly unlikely.

Though according to the government the deal with the DUP makes a power sharing agreement more likely... they don't say how though.
