The Abdication of One Grand Duke, the Coronation of Another

Postby Mohns » Thu Jun 15, 2017 12:23 am

City Palace Antoniaburg, Neumohns

Around the old teak table sat the old Grand Duke Heinrich Conrad II, to his right sat his grandson Hereditary Grand Duke Möritz. Gathered around the two stood the rest of the grand ducal family. All were dressed in their robes of state. Across from them stood the photographer, busy adjusting his camera.

In the other side of the room, the Minister-President discussed in hushed tones the procedure with the Hofmarschal and a few other officials.

The Minister-President paused from his conversation, glanced at his pocket watch, and said "it's time." He then walked over to the Grand Duke, followed slowly by the officials.

"Your Royal Highness, here, it is" the Minister-President said handing the Grand Duke a rather large leather folder, hesitant to name it.

"Do not say it, say what it is. You have always been frank with me, do not stop now" Heinrich Conrad II grumbled. He took the folder and opened it to see the piece of vellum it contained. Above the top was written "Instrument of Abdication. " Without looking back the Grand Duke held out his hand behind him. All looked on, not knowing what to do.

"Pen?" asked the Grand Duke, clearly in a bad mood. He waited while one was brought, still not looking back. He turned to Möritz. "Today, you will become a ruler, I will give you my land, my people, take care of them. From now on you are responsible, do not think I will return to bail you out, if you screw up" Heinrich Conrad ordered his grandson.

Then without ceremony, he took the pen and signed the instrument. Heinrich Conrad, formerly Grand Duke, passed the instrument to the Minister-President, then turned to his grandson again, grabbed his hand, kissed it and said "Your Royal Highness."

As everyone in the room signed the document they followed Heinrich Conrad's example. The former Grand Duke departed queitly before the signing was complete. He headed to the balcony.

As he stepped out, he was met with cheers and singing." My people, I have abdicated the Grand Ducal Throne, I give it up, although with reluctance, without fear. For I have full confidence in my successor. I will give him my full loyalty, and you must cheer for him now. This shall be the last you see of me, till it is time to bury me. I retire from public life. Adieu." With those words he exited the balcony.

Möritz signed the document making him Grand Duke last. The Minister-President then escorted him to the balcony where the crowds waited. The herald announced "His Royal Highness, The Grand Duke, Möritz III" The Grand Duke stepped out, shortly followed by the Minister-President. The two stood side by side and waived. Not moving his mouth the Minister-President said "Remember, not too long, Your Royal Highness has guests"

After a few minutes, the new Grand Duke left to prepare for the reception of the foreign guests to his coronation.

The Grand Duchy of Mohns was, if one asked Marla Cróimiam of the Tribe of Cork, a pretty place.
The Selkie, a young woman of 27 Springs, blue hair, blue eyes and sportly built without shedding being a woman (and being quite a looker, too), was Ambassador of the Selkie, Ambassador of her people. She was one half of the ensemble for Ambassador Group 1, which was her and Donald Críonna of the Tribe of Louth, Ambassador of the Free Lands, the government, and being a member of it as he was Head of the Foreign Office, the closest thing to a foreign minister the Free Lands had.
And they were at the City Palace Antoniaburg in Neumohns.
Befitting of the title of palace, even Marla, a woman who loved the outdoors and being active there, had to admit, that it was an impressive structure, taking a moment to marvel at it, much to the amusement of Crionna.
The Old Fox, as he was sometimes called, was by now unimpressed by such displays, but he had to admit, that it was certainly something. Then his back started to act up again. Walking on a cane, arms linked with Marla, who shot him a worried glance as they slowly, but steadfastly made their way to the reception hall, he gave her a smile.
He was indeed an old man from a family, that always had back problems - choosing an occupation, where he had to sit over long stretches of time might not have been the best of ideas. However, he and her had a job to do: Representing the Free Lands of the Selkie, bringing their best wishes for the Möritz III. in the name of the Elder Council, establishing ties of friendship with Mohns.
There was no time for back pain - that was known to both of them, both of them clad in Geansai, Marla in the female version of it, displaying Cork's proud colours, keeping Carman Fea's colours for tomorrow, Crionna in the male of it, the back-piece reinforced due to his back problems.
And, putting on a smile, that made the eyes twinkle, a smile of enjoyment and a small bit of mirth, both Marla and Crionna entered the reception hall.
I play PT, MT and a bit FT. I am into character-RPs.
My people are called the Selkie, the nation is usually called the Free Lands in MT-settings. Thanks.

Admiral André Nérond descended from the car that he wes in, quickly followed by a lieutenant giving him some sheets. After a quick look at the sheets, he signed them and gave them back to the lieutenant who, after a quick salute, went back to the car. André Nérond looked at the palace, quite impressed by the architecture of it. He presented his invitation to the guards and entered. The reception hall made him remember of old pictures of the ancient Imperial Palace of Sybrai before the revolution that he saw at school.
He looked nervously at the guards, ha was always nervous when he hadn't his weapon on him but consul Alexis Adle was clear: no diplomatic incidents and even if weapons were not totally forbidden, Alexis was a very cautious man. (Maybe too much)

Ortfiné or Finé as she simply went by, probably was stretching her thin at this point. Most countries would probably send diplomatic representatives or heads of their foreign departments but there were the few leaders who also wanted to attend. There was nothing wrong with that after all heads of state are very busy and Finé understood that but she felt it was important to make her presence known as newly appointed leader of her country. She hadn't been in office very long at this point, she was still largely understanding how everything worked and it was easy to write her off as a silly naive girl who was just a front while the "real men" ran things behind the scenes. She was traveling light this time, only with her lone guard, Bianca whom she had to insist remain unarmed at the request of the host nation. Bianca tried protesting in the name of her majesties safety and protection. "Just you at my side, already makes me feel secure, Bianca."

"As you Wish, your majesty." She secured her pistol safely within the confines of their personal transport, it wouldn't ever come into foreign territory. Finé continued "I'm certain we will be just fine, any host nation would take any precaution needed to ensure the well being of it's guests. Just as our own Royal Guard did when I was coronated."

"I do train my men and women well."

"Which is why I personally asked for you to come along with me and anytime I travel overseas."

"Yes, Your Grace and I am grateful."

"Milady!" Lotte, her young hand maiden called for her "If you are all set our transport has arrived."

"Thank you, Lotte."

The short drive later they arrived at their destination the lovely City Palace. "It looks as though others are arriving now as well." Finé noticed the other nationals arriving.

"I suppose that's a good thing. It means we are not late then." Bianca replied

"Still had I known there was going to be a ball I should have brought along Izetta." she sighed thinking of her dear friend back home. "She has that lovely gown I had made for her and so little occasions to use it."

"There will be future occasions, Your Grace, I am sure. But we have to play it safe with a nation we have little information about, especially regarding attitudes towards that." Bianca tried to be assuring and sympathetic but it seemed she was all business in the end. Still even in her own heart, she was just as much a romantic as Finé was.

"At least I hope there will be other guests who will do me the pleasure of sharing a dance. Otherwise it might be you and me on the floor"

"I, uuh well, of course you know I'm always here to help." Finé eyes darted around to the other guests it was hard to get a read, some folks in a most unusual outfit, she recognized it as the The Geansai, the signature tradition of the Free Lands, the nation that her personal transport was commissioned from, the craft she sailed from Kuronami to here on, due to her fear of flying and refusal to ever set foot in an aircraft, ever. There was a military man no doubt, judging by the decorations on his uniform a very high rank along with another personal assistant who just as quickly disappeared as he appeared. Gave her own thoughts to how her handmaiden was also left to her own accords during the party.

Waiting on the proceedings to start was always a bore, but that was done away with by looking at the other, already arrived guests - so far, two delegations, namely Admiral André Nérond, if the dossier and the guest list hadn't been wrong, and a face known to the two Selkie.
A lovely young ruler, Empress of her people, yet so young... Crionna thought for a moment, then he directed Marla's attention that way and a moment later, the odd pair was on the way towards her, slowly, but steadily and with a clinking cane.
Empress Ortfiné was a well known face at the Foreign Office (ever since she bought that SDY-Yacht, actually), who's head thought, that she was doing good - sure, she had much to learn still, but she was willing to learn. And that was the important part. Many young rulers ruled with arrogance and cockyness, but she did not. One might call her a naive little girl, but if Crionna would ever catch someone calling her that in his presence, he would have words with the person in question.
Very strict ones.
A pity that he didn't have the mind to bring Leonard and Kendra with them, the former because of him being a very good dancer, the latter because whereever he went on a diplomatic mission, she was with him - or the other way around, depending on the context.
As they entered conversation-distance, Crionna placed his hand over his heart and bowed his head, a gesture usually reserved for greeting an Elder, but also usually used to greet foreign heads of state. That was a gesture mirrowed by Marla, the bluenette smiling at the bodyguard and handmaiden as well.
"Good evening, Empress Ortfiné.", Crionna said with a smile, that radiated a sort-of grandfatherly warmth, one that he usually had with his co-workers. "You look radiant as always... if I may ask, how are you, Your Highness?"

The foreign minister, Albert von Haasenhügel and the Steward, Peter Truchseß zu Löwenberg stood at the top of the stairs in discussion with the Butler. From their elevated position they could see the entire hall. Servants in white and green livery moved about, while halberdiers in black and white guarded the open doorways like statues.

As the guests arrived Albert felt a tinge of nervousness and engaged in a bout of last minute self doubt, all internally. The only visible sign was a occasional clenching of his right fist. Peter, much younger than the 50 year old minister had both the confidence of youth and expertise. He simply stood straight up like soldier, with his staff in hid hand focusing on looking the part. The Butler was, of course, a stoic professional and well prepared.

Unlike his companions, the Foreign Minister had a role to fill that required a great deal of improvisation as opposed to just carrying out prescribed ceremonial functions. Perhaps it didn't help that tradition dictate that the minister resign tomorrow and only hope they are reappointed.

Satisfied with the Butler's preparations, the minister and steward descended the stairs to meet and greet the guests.

As they walked towards the entrance they saw an old man and a young woman dressed unusual, an odd pair to be sure, they thought, but did not say, as well as two women and a man by himself. Two servants simultaneously and discreetly whispered the names and nation of the guests into the two official's ears. Deciding the Empress was most important, they moved to greet her first.

Finé turned to see another guest greeting her. "Oh, good evening to you." Bianca meanwhile gave a silent nod in return to the woman. Finé was a bit surprised to be recognized so easily but then again the Free Lands and Kuronami had been blossoming in their relationship. "How kind of you to say. I'm excited to be here. You are from the Free Lands I presume, I recognized your style of clothing. I must pay my compliments to your ship builders you really have crafted me a fine ship for sea travel. Really took the rolling seas quite well, probably the smoothest trip I've had in all my lifetime."

Bianca gave Finé a light tap to grab her attention to the approaching hosts. "Oh hello and good evening." She gave a curtsy and extended her hand " am Empress Ortfiné von Eylstadt. Well you may just calle me Finé if you like."

Crionna smiled. "We indeed are Selkie, searrach. Good to know what gave us away... we need to work on our stealth, you see?", he told her with a wide smile of mirth - he simply wasn't able to hold back the term searrach, a term of endearment, meaning foal, as in a young horse. Selkie often used it for what the individual thought to be a child in a good way (calling someone 'child', however, bordered on an insult), that gesture coming from their equestrian culture. "We will bring your praises to the esteemed engineers and workers of SDY and..."
Marla straightened up, directing her eyes into the direction of Albert von Haasenhügel, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mohns and maybe, hopefully not, soon out of a job, and Peter Truchseß zu Löwenberg, the Steward, which made Crionna smile.
"...and it appears to me, that someone else would like your attention.", he concluded, bowed his head again, his mirthful, grandfatherly smile still on his face as he made a step back - and not a moment later, the Empress of Kuronami took off to greet the approaching hosts.

André quickly spotted other representatives from different states as they gathered together to greet each other.
He quickly approached the group, trying to see who was who. He easily recognized each of them as he was briefed by consul Alexis about each of them.
He waited that the emress have finished to introduce herself to their hosts before coming into the small group. After a handshake with the foreign minister Albert von Haasenhügel and the selkie ambassadors, he bowed down to the empress.
He then turned toward Albert von Haasenhügel.

"Let me introduce myself, I'm André Nérond, admiral in chief of the fleet of Sybrai and member of the ruling council. Consul Alexis would have liked to come in person but he had important military affairs to manage. Are we only three delegations to come or are we waiting for someone else?"

Informality and familiarity are not things associated with the imperial rank, so both the Mohnsen were surprised by the Empress' greeting. Peter was the first to recover, his surprise barely detectable and he responded with out missing a beat.

"I am Peter Truchseß zu Löwenberg, but most people here call me simply Steward or Truchseß" Peter said smiling and giving a slight bow.

The Foreign Minister then introduced himself as Minister von Haasenhügel. Then both turned to the other guests, to complete the greetings.

"His Royal Highness will be here soon, he is looking forward to meeting all of you. Please help yourself to the refreshments in the meantime" the Minister told the guests.

Meanwhile Moritz was heading down the hallway to the reception hall. Dressed in a simple but well cut dinner jacket he walked at a slow pace, allowing his relatives to overtake him.

His aunts and sisters were already far ahead, laughing and chatting as they moved as one group towards the hall. Soon they would be descending the stairs.

Ernst Heinrich, Moritz's uncle lagged behind, as was usual. "Mozi" Ernst called out as he attempted to catch up with his nephew, still fastening his cufflinks.

Ernst Heinrich felt he should give his nephew some fatherly advice, or at least be available to offer it, should it be asked. Not that he had any ready to provide.

The Grand Duke turned to his elderly uncle. "Hey, Uncle Ernie, it is good to see you. Are you ready for the party?"

"Yes, ready, well mostly, I am not as quick as I was" the uncle replied.

"That's okay, I'll wait, then you will have plenty of time."

"Don't wait to long, you have guests"

"You can entertain them for me, you are a natural at these things"

"You don't need to flatter me, I know I am a bore or a boor at these things. I always say to little or too much."

"But that's the best part, remember when you told the countess of... oh, I forgot which one, but you congratulated her on her pregnancy, she turned red as a cherry and then you brought up her husband's funeral."

"It was the Countess of Stachelbeeren, and I didn't bring up her husband's funeral, I asked when I last saw her. And I was sure she was pregnant."

"That's the best part of it all, she was! She decided to pretend to be fat, rather than reveal that she had an affair. Ha ha" The Grand Duke looked at the clock on the wall. "Better get going"

The two headed towards the hallway, till they reached the grand staircase. There they separated as first the uncle than the nephew descended the stairs into the hallway.

Crionna bowed his head at the introduction of Truchseß and of Haasenhügel, a respectful gesture, like he had done as Admiral Nérond had introduced himself.
Now, it was him, who completed the merry round.
"Good evening, gentlemen.", he said with a smile and looked each of the guests unknown to him, namely the good Admiral, and their gracious hosts, "To introduce myself, I'm Donald Críonna of the Tribe of Louth, Head of the Foreign Office of the Free Lands of the Selkie." He motioned to his side, where Marla bowed her head as well, a small smile on her lips and a blush on her cheeks. "My charming companion, caretaker and Ambassador of the Selkie, Marla Cróimiam of the Tribe of Cork."
"It's a great pleasure to meet you all, Your Highness, your Excellencies.", she said, her accent filling her words with soft vowels and rolling Rs, and looked up with a grin.

Due to a puncture on the road it was a late arriving Prince James Xarn whose Bentley arrived outside of the Palace. A slightly grubby bodyguard opened the door for the Prince, who was dressed in a brown tweed suit, with a gold fob watch in the pocket. His bodyguard Corporal Ral unhooks his holster and secures the handgun in the car, adding the brass knuckles and switchblade also, as a courtesy to their host.
Prince James takes a deep breath before entering. He needed to forge trade & diplomatic links, though he was not the weakest of his siblings , he definitely needed to move up especially as rumours of the Kings ill-health were beginning to circulate. Once a new King was declared violence would follow as a new pecking order was established.
With this in mind he entered the Palace ...

Mohns wrote:Informality and familiarity are not things associated with the imperial rank, so both the Mohnsen were surprised by the Empress' greeting.

"It's great pleasure to meet you. Thank you so kindly." She let them get to the other guests and Fine's eyes lit up at the sound of refreshments "Your Grace," Bianca began "I know it's not exactly my place but I do urge you to take caution if you indulge in sweets that may be provided."

"Ah well you know my sweet tooth can get me in trouble. Thanks Bianca I'll be careful."

"Besides...", Crionna said from the side, smiling at Bianca first, then Fine in a grandfatherly way, his eyes sparkling with both wisdom acquired over the years and decades and mirth kept a hold of during that time, "...if Her Highness permits me to, she won't be alone. I'd be honoured if I may accompany you, Fine-impira."
Marla smiled and nodded to Bianca - it would all be okay. Crionna was a tad bit weird at times, but he was an old gentleman after all. Also, Selkie were famous for their sweet tooth.
He was, by now, doing more then just fostering the diplomatic relations between Kuronami and the Free Lands, he was honestly interested in how the young woman fared with her role.

"Very well" Bianca simply replied "Your Grace" She nodded to Fine and Fine nodded back and then replied Crionna "It'd a great pleasure if you accompanied me."

"Well, then.", Crionna said with mirth, motioning for Fine to lead the way as he offered an arm to link, "After you, Your Highness." He made a small pause, leaning onto his cane. "If I may ask, what's the state of affairs in Kuronami?"
Meanwhile, Marla motioned Biance to stay by her side as she took position behind Crionna, thus motioning Bianca to take position behind her Empress. The professional Marcach smiled at her, then looked forward again, like any good diplomatic attendant following the conversation with rapt attention.
It was very clear, that Marla was more then eye candy - far more.

Bianca took her place with Marla keeping in tow with Fine. Made her feel at ease she could keep tabs on her and let her be open and mingle with guests. Hard part about her job was balance the need of security with the needs of being diplomatic.

"Well quite a bit on my plate for the moment. There's a few leftovers from our Previous Emperor's work, much is some infrastructure upgrades. We've been building onto Caloris' ports to allow more ships. Our agriculture sector is booming right now, fishing and farming really boosting our food exports so we'll be needing more room. There's expanding some telecoms into the more rural parts of our country, allowing smallest of villages to connect and be more in touch. Then there's our southern islands of Mazomba seeing some costal safety matters with smugglers. But I'm going off all about what we're working on, I'd like to inquire how things are in your country."

Marla nodded to Bianca, focussing forward again a moment later.
Crionna smiled - that was very honest of her to say it in that way and in that tone, a lot on the plate and a lot progressing. It was almost naive in its honesty, as he could count the number of politicians, who freely admitted to a pirate problem in such an open space with one hand.
Still, honesty had to be both returned and, although it was the completely wrong word, rewarded. "Please know, Fine-impira, that if Kuromani ever needs help, send us the word. We will help.", he told her, his mirth vanishing for a bit to make way to honesty and seriousness, integrety and the will to help, if such was needed. "Now, then, how are the Free Lands?"
He looked at her, smiling.
"Summer's round the corner, and so are summer festivals and most of the Marcach Competitions.", he grinned as Marla rolled her eyes - despite not being able to see her do that, he knew, that she was doing it. "The crops are growing fine, our economy grows, the Lutetiians and us are on a course of getting along with each other, but please don't mention Vellenge, it's still a sore spot for everyone, the economy grows and..." He looked at Fine with a wider smile. "There are reports, that the Selkie in Diaspora are beginning to return home. It's going to be an interesting next few years!"

Prince James offered his hand.
"Indeed I am, and I must apologise for being late, but a tyre blew several miles out of town. Now if our information is correct you would be Admiral Nerond, the hero of the Sargasso Campaign. I must say it is an honour to meet you."
Prince James waves a waiter over and grabs two glasses.
" To an interesting evening" he toasts.

The Steward excused himself as if he had a sixth sense telling him he was needed elsewhere. The Minister then moved to greet the late arrival, a prince from Xialxal Xarn.

He had just greeted Prince James when all the attention in the room was directed to the stairs. The Steward announced in a clear but not shouting voice, that the host, the new Grand Duke had arrived.

Moritz descended the stairs at a steady pace, not wanting to betray his impatience. Almost 30 he is young for a ruler, but his youth combined with his soft features and blond hair gave him a sympathetic appearance.

Stopping near the bottom of the stairs, the Grand Duke addressed his guests.

"Welcome my honored guests, it is my pleasure to offer you my hospitality. I have here the best food and drink my land can offer. I hope you partake of it liberally. I thank you for traveling from far and wide on, what is for me, an auspicious and special occasion.

Today, is the first day of a new reign. My reign. Today is the beginning of a new era in Mohns, and perhaps the wider world.

With new leadership comes new policy. That is inevitable. This is not always a rejection or a rebuke of those who come before us. In fact, I feel my policy is only possible due to the tireless effort and wise practice of my grandfather.

It is well known that the former Grand Duke focused more on domestic than international affairs. It is only due to his success at home, that I feel that we as a nation can not only look out to the world, but be active participants in global affairs.

It is in this spirit that I welcome you here tonight. The spirit of friendship. Thank you."

After finishing his short speech, Moritz descended the rest of the way, and mingled with the crowd. He moved quickly, personally greeting those on both sides.

As the Steward announced the new Grand Duke, Crionna looked towards the stairs, excusing that to Empress Fine with an apologetic smile - it would be rude to not listen to their gracious host while he made his appearance, after all.
Diplomacy was 90 percent about politeness, after all.
He watched him closely... young for a ruler, indeed, but so was the Empress by his side, promising and willing to learn, it seemed, not thinking himself to know everything. His words were honest, too.
As he clapped, he looked to Marla and gave her a nod. The bluenette understood.
A moment later, she was gone, making her way towards the new Grand Duke on a more covert route, reaching him soon enough, while Crionna turned back to Fine. "My apologies.", he said and bowed his head, "Where were we?"
Meanwhile, Marla reached Moritz, a small smile on her face, as she placed a hand over her heart and bowed her head in an elegant move, her posture confident, as her hand sank into the fur of her holder. "Good evening, Your Highness.", she said with a firm voice as soon as she was bowing her head, continuing to extend her hand as soon as she had her head up again, "I am Marla Cróimiam of the Tribe of Cork, Ambassador of the Selkie. If I may say so, Sir, a wonderful speech."

"Sorry, I think you must be reffering to another admiral from another state, Sybrai have never done any campaign of this name." Replied André, giving a firm handshake to Prince James.

"Anyway, I think the Grand Duke have arrived, excuse me but I have to congratulate him." He sayd after the steward announced the arrival of the new Grand Duke.

Moritz worked the crowd strategically. Making sure that no one felt snubbed, he varied his attention to his guests based on their importance and rank. A handshake to a count here, a friendly smile to socialite there.

To his own subjects, he stuck with token gestures meant to acknowledge their status. The Mohnsen themselves understood, tonight was about the foreign guests. Honoured to serve their state in such leisurely, they quickly dispersed and returned to socializing.

The Grand Duke was then free to give his attention to his visitors from afar, and thus implement his new foreign policy personally.

The Admiral struck Moritz as a typical military man, by the book and task oriented. Perhaps not the life of the party, but the straightforward type one prefers to conduct business with.

Moritz thanked him for his kind words and turned to, in his mind, a more interesting guest. A young woman with blue hair and exotic clothes. Moritz met her with a charming smile. "You are too kind Ambassador Cróimiam" he said fumbling the pronunciation of her name. "I thought it passable, suitable even. Thank you very much for the compliment."
