Odd things they do in other countries...

Postby Cabra West » Tue May 23, 2017 5:20 am

I just came across Gudetama in a new article about latest fashions and fads in Japan. And I have to admit, hand on heart, I absolutely do not get it.

And while that's in itself not necessarily something new (I often don't get things, but I enjoy the sense of surreal confusion), I was wondering if there's other things in other countries that other NSG posters can't get their head around.
As in, there must be things we do in Ireland that would befuddle any Japanese person. And I'm wondering what they might be.

So, NSG, what have you observed in countries across the world that just will not make sense to you?
"I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, and as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built in to the very nature of the universe. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior."

I had been wondering about that - I thought maybe they had run out of wood?
Or had to make the frame wider, but didn't want to shell out on another door?

In Vietnam, don't they have that raw egg food with the chick still in it?

Literally surrounded by people doing weird stuff here. Go a bit west and they put the forks upside down on the table. Go a bit more northwest and they drive on the wrong side. Go a bit north and they have dinner at 18.00 .

"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

Dutch breakfast sprinkles, Austria essentially closing down on Sundays, Austrian grocery stores that have multiple shelves dedicated solely to mayonnaise in various flavors, and the general lack of cold beverages in Central Europe. I'm not sure if the last part is throughout all Europe, I've only been through a portion of it.

Lack of cold beverages? Do you mean availability or variety? I can't see problems with either in Switzerland or Austria (or the Netherlands), but then I don't know about other places.

Things I find odd abroad: Germany's complete refusal of serving decent espresso outside of some hipster places, Belgium basically being two countries by now (when I drive to Maastricht from home, I cross about 1km of Flanders, and the speed limit changes...) and some places in Austria measuring things in units of 10g. The Netherlands' national obsession with fried stuff could count too, but then I absolutely love it myself so...

In my own country (Switzerland): The voting thing, obviously, and the consequence that the average Swiss person sees any country that doesn't do referenda as inherently undemocratic. Everything closing down on Sunday as well. How incredibly closed to the outside world we are, something I didn't realise until I went on exchange (for example that almost nobody would ever consider foreign universities). The fact that in Switzerland, being average is seen as better than being outstanding.

Tibetans stick their tongues out as a form of greeting. Americans seem to either be morbidly obese or anorexic. Western fashioned designers seemed obsessed with covering everything but things that should be covered. Catalans and their weird Christmas decorations. The paradoxical teenage American obsessions with dessert and staying thin. That's what I can think of off the top of my head.

I've always found it weird how, in North America, they write the away team first and then the home side; for example, if the Maples Leafs played the Bruins on home ice and a member of the away team scored the only goal of the match, the score would be written as Boston 1-0 Toronto. There are probably more but that's the best one I could think of off the top of my head.

Huh, never thought about that.
To me it makes sense tho. It's Boston at Toronto; Bos @ Tor.
It follows how it must be written grammatically.
