Turkey Blocks Wikipedia

Postby Frieden-und Freudenland » Sat Apr 29, 2017 7:22 am

Yep --- finally this happened, too. We are all happy to see how democratic (!) Turkey is becoming after the referendum.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 08941.html

Access to Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia, has been blocked in Turkey, according to an internet censorship-monitoring network.

Turkey Blocks, which calls itself an independent “digital transparency project” said users in Turkey have been unable to access all language editions of Wikipedia since yesterday morning. “The loss of availability is consistent with internet filters used to censor content in the country,” the monitor
said.

The site has been blocked under a provisional administrative measure without a court order, but Turkey Blocks says an order is expected in the coming days. The measure has been implemented by the country’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority.

There is no official statement on why the site has been blocked, but Turkish media is reporting the cause as “terror-related content”.

Hurriyet Daily News said Turkey has been in communication with Wikipedia for the removal of content supporting terror and presenting Turkey as a “supporter of terror”.

NTV reported that Turkey demanded Wikipedia to open an office in the country, act in line with international law and abide by court decisions and “not be part of the blackout operation against Turkey”.

If these demands are met and the content removed, the site would be reopened, according to Turkish media.

When attempting to access the site without the use of a virtual private network (VPN), connections time out and browsers alert “this site can’t be reached”.

I am particularly interested in the part where it says ''NTV reported that Turkey demanded Wikipedia to open an office in the country'' --- I think one of the ulterior motives of the Turkish government in restricting/blocking access to such websites (though not the primary motive) may be to blackmail them into establishing offices in Turkey and paying taxes. A short while ago, booking.com has been banned from Turkey, and Turkish ministers made similar statements, saying that they could consider allowing booking.com to come back to Turkey if they came, estabished an office and paid taxes.

So what does NS think on the matter?

Probably blocked it so graduates don't get access from sources teachers hate. Makes sense.

I have a mild Wikipedia addiction, where I read entire articles about anything that interests me at the current moment. Well, I guess I won't be moving to Turkey.

Is Turkey blocking Wikipedia or is it denying all access of it to internet providers? If it's just blocking it, well, get a vpn.

Google search results for "how to set up a proxy" in Turkey will probably skyrocket.

This doesn't surprise me, considering how many times they've blocked youtube and other websites.

Blocking. As the news article suggests, the website can still be accessed via VPN.

The funny thing is that censorship is entirely pointless. Tech-savvy young adults who are mostly anti-AKP will be using VPN to circumvent the restriction, and most voters of the AKP who live in rural areas will probably not visit Wikipedia to read articles on Turkey. Or, even if they did, I doubt they would change their opinions about AKP. They tend to dismiss any negative news about their beloved leader as a conspiracy of the Westerners or something along those lines.

I think the only reasonable explanation for such censorship decisions is that the government wants to show its people that ''they are the boss.''

We can oppress you.

Because we are bigger than you.

We switch Wikipedia off, just like that.

You'd better not mess with us.

But VPNs cost money, which not everyone can afford. It's basically a tax on accessing the free internet.

They're also banning dating shows on TV: https://www.yahoo.com/news/turkey-bans- ... 42889.html

For what it's worth, here's something on the referendum in general:
