Austrian Pres: All women must wear headscarves one day

Postby Tinhampton » Thu Apr 27, 2017 11:26 am

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4452774/Austrian-president-women-wear-headscarves.html
Austria's left-leaning president Alexander Van Der Bellen has suggested all women must one day wear headscarves to combat Islamophobia.

The green-backed independent triumphed over his populist right-wing rival Norbert Hofer in December after an unprecedented repeat vote.

His comments come after the Austrian government banned the full-face veil in public spaces in January, as part of an attempt to counter the rise of the far-right Freedom Party.

'Besides that, not only Muslim women. Every woman can wear a headscarf. And if it goes on - and I am already on the next question - with actual rampant Islamophobia, the day will come that we must ask all women to wear a headscarf.

'All out of solidarity with those who have to on religious grounds.'

Austria banned the burqa, niqab and other face-covering veils earlier this year.

The measure was introduced by the ruling Social Democratic party (SPÖ) and the centre-right Austrian People’s party (ÖVP) to prevent the collapse of their coalition government.

By doing so, they followed in the footsteps of France, which became the first European country to ban the full-face veil officially in 2010.

Bans are also in place in Belgium and some parts of Switzerland.

So... as you can see above, Austria's president has stated that - if the current "rampant Islamophobia" drags on in Austria, the country's women may well be ordered to wear headscarves one day. I, for one, am opposed to this measure, and believe that there are more effective ways to deal with Islamophobia. Can they do so if they choose? Yes, but would they do so if the government mandated it because Islamophobia? Likely not.

But that's enough of me - while you're voting in the poll (options in order from strongest YES to strongest NO, and a couple of extras at the end), what do YOU think? Let us know below.

Can we force stupid politicians to wear gags for a day? Honestly, what a tool.

Cute. Van der Bellen seems to be rooting for the FPO in 2018? Why would he say this when the polls show the SPO competing with the FPO for first place? Is this some sort of inter-leftist sabotage? Is he gonna keep this up?

Also, note for the Daily Mail, he didn't suggest that women must wear headscarves. The wording is very significant here. x2

I am not in favour of enforcing it nor am I in favour of banning it, however it is a symbol of legitimate oppression in many Islamic countries and to think that it is liberating and something to celebrate over ''Islamophobia'' is mind-bogging to me

He said a stupid and foolish thing, but let's not pretend he actually said what your thread title is claiming, OP.

It's probably closer to asking all the other kids to stick straws up their noses so the one kid doesn't look quite so dumb.

Could be worse. Although, I don't see how wearing a headscarf for a day would make you hate Islam less. Wouldn't it do the opposite?

He said that in response to rampant islamophobia, the day may come when all women are asked to where a headscarf for a day out of solidarity. He never said they must, and a response in a single interview does not indicate clear policy. His phrasing was awful and I'm not sure how appropriate the suggest is in the first place, though this is not some attempt by a European politician to force all women to wear the headscarf. It was a dumb moment on his part, but people are overreacting to this.

Well, that's Austrian politics in a nutshell for you.

It's a choice between Commies masquerading as social democrats and actual Neo-Nazis who barely even bother to pay lip service to the idea that they're only Far-Right.

He probably said this without any real intent behind it, but it's this kind of inane comments filled with self-righteousness that pushes me closer to the right than to the left to which I've been personally attached for some time.

Well - anyone want to take a guess at what I found through google?

ALL the right and far right sites are saying the Austrian President said women will be FORCED to wear headscarves. This includes The Daily Mail, Brietbart, "legalinsurrection" and a few others. The one that surprised me was "JihadWatch" (which is very right wing to say the least), except when you go to the article it is a massive rant against Hijabs, and nothing to do with the Austrian President's request.

Meanwhile most of the centre and left sites say it will be a request - they will be asked to wear them in solidarity.

The OP has quoted The Daily Mail, which has a long history of suggesting Muslims are terrorists, immigrants are freeloaders and anyone who voted against Brexit should be shoved in an oven and roasted alive. So whether the OP was mislead about the strength of the demand (because of The Mail and it's incredible ability to twist facts to fit its own agenda) or misquoted the apparent truth (which - according to subtitles on a video - is "we will have to ask all women to wear", which suggests they will be asking, not telling, ordering, commanding or forcing).

As to the actual question - whether the question should be asked - *shrug* - why not?
