How does your nation count?

Postby Sensorland » Fri Apr 21, 2017 11:47 am

Does your nation use base ten (decimal), base twelve (dozenal), or another system? In Sensorland, Base ten is typical, but there is a movement to teach base twelve in schools in addition to base ten.

99% of Leonorians have never known anything else but the decimal system. Only scientists use duodecimal systems for certain purposes.

All of the major languages use base 10.

However, some words differ. German uses Einundzwanzig type words to spell out numbers greater than 20, literally one and twenty. French speaking Auzkhians use the French way of counting. It differs slightly on spelling and speaking.

North Coldmont uses two primary languages -
English (counting in decimal [base-10])
and Ronezian (counting in tetradecimal [base-14])

(if you're wondering, tetradecimal can theoretically be counted by using segments of all fingers on one hand (ie two on the thumb, three on all other fingers), allowing for an "octavigesimal" system (something that I believe does not exist in human counting yet!))

In Aldina, decimal counting is most common, but counting in base twelve using the sections of the fingers is a well-known trick, particularly among bakers and others who have to be able to count objects quickly.

In Eriaroon Amalgamated Language, the main language of the Eriaroon Eugenic Republic, the number syyemnis base twelve (0-11). This is a result of Eriaroons having a total of 12 limbs (four large tentacles and eight smaller tentacles).

Notably, other languages have different systems.

Eriaroon Blinklight, a language that relies on bioluminescence and has optical input as its main method of communication (EAL uses tactile, verbal and optical on that order), has a base 4 number system (0-3). This is because Eriaroons have four large tentacles. In addition, Eriaroons possess four-way radial symmetry.

Larushol, a mainly verbal language with slight optical elements and no requirement for tactile commmunication, has a base eight number system (0-7) due to the number of small tentacles in Eriaroon anatomy.

Notably, Eriaroons typically have little difficulty converting between numbering systems, comparatively to most species.

Base 10/12/20, as in English, Icelandic, Finnish and French. Dirlandic has a Proto-Finnic based ordinal system, base 10, and an Icelandic based cardinal system.
