[UK] General Election 2017 Superthread

Postby Minoa » Tue Apr 18, 2017 3:13 am

Apologies in advance for the rapid change in the news, but Theresa May will seek an early General Election on 8 June 2017, suspending the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011. While it is harder to call a snap General Election now, it is still possible if the Parliament agrees. That is the only major change and as we will see, not very effective.

I will vote for Labour in my opinion. I am not happy with the current Conservative government to a point that I have committed to leaving the UK when I can. Barring a major change, the 2017 General Election may be my very last before I bid a reluctant adieu to the UK.

What are your thoughts? Who will you vote for this time?

The thread poll will run until the day before election day, because the election rules do not permit opinion polls on the polling day itself. As such, I may have to restart the poll if the date changes. I am aware that there is an exit poll at 10pm, just after the polls close, but NationStates is not a polling company like Ipsos et al.

Public Service Announcement

Please do register to vote even if you do not feel like voting now — if you change your mind later and you want to vote, you will not regret it if you register now. If you registered to vote in the canvas last year, you should check with your local authority to make sure you are in the register now.

You do not have to appear in the “open register” in order to vote.

If you are an Irish citizen, or citizen of a country that is a member of the British Commonwealth (PDF), great news: you can vote with us too!

I announced it on the UK pol thread, but I suppose this makes more sense.

Also, for the latest polling data:

Horry Shitu.
Honestly I have no idea who I'm going to vote for. I would've voted Labour but I can't stand Corbyn, I don't like May and I would vote for the Lib Dems but they have no chance of winning.

To say the least. I really thought she would steamroller her way through the next two years at least.

And you have to ask - if she is willing to give the people of the UK a choice, does this mean she'll give the people of Scotland a choice as well, or is she still going to be a bit of a dicktator about that?

I'll be voting Lib Dems even though the Tories will probably, barring an upset of grand proportions, get a big majority a la 1983. Who knows? Maybe people will fight back against May's appeal to give her all the power she wants.

Choice about what?

Interesting timing however.

I think they could gain from Remain voting Tories. May's alienated Cameron's modern, urban, cosmopolitan conservative supporters for the old traditionals. I can't vote for Labour in my area because they have no chance and I want Corbyn to lose so they'll get a decent, effective leader anyway. Lib Dems for me.

That was because of Nick Clegg's stupidity and willingness to follow the Tories.
Tim Farron is a far more popular, albeit slightly delusional, leader.

I think there's a chance she's also doing it before we get the rest of the bad news about Brexit breaking. If she waits a year, or until 2020, when we get the full scope of how fucked we are as a nation, she'll never get back in. But if she does it now, and then can rule until 2022 unchallenged, maybe she thinks she can build things back between 2019 and 2022?

It'd be hilarious to see the Lib Dems to become the main opposition party imo and a real kick to Corbyn

She said Scotland won't get an independence vote over her dead body (paraphrasing). And yet now she is letting the entire country decide whether they want a Tory government.. Seems kind of........ weird.

She campaigned for Remain, so perhaps this is a shot at rustling feathers and allowing an opportunity for people to make changes before we take the plunge into Brexit. For a start we could stop Boris from being elected as well as other problems in the cabinet and perhaps let people in who will do a better job of negotiating.
