9, Jan, 2012, 0730

It was a Rainy day at just above Freezing At USAF Base Ramstein AFB, Germany. Jax (At 0720 scanned his Access Badge to enter Rainbow's Secure Compound, The Badge had a Picture, his Height, His Weight, His Eye Color, and Blood Type, The latter incase of a emergency needing blood right then and there, Badges like this were issued to all of Rainbow's team members, and where worn on the Torso), with a couple hot pockets and coffee in hand for breakfast, had arrived at his office in the Secured Building in a Secured area Designed for TF Rainbow's HQ that was only a 5 minute drive to the Air Field, with each Team having its own building number 13 Total Buildings (Including Mess Hall and Gym in this Count. Jax was dressed in a Multicam Uniform

Mean While Joseph was about to finish a grueling, cold, and wet run for his mornings exercise, when he heard "To the Colors" and [url+]the US National Anthem[/url], which he stood at attention for to the colors, and then Saluted during the National Anthem. At the end of the National Anthem, Joseph pounded out the Last 1/2 mile of his run and then went and got ready for the day. Joseph, mean while was dressed in a Grey Under Armor Freedom Line T-Shirt, Grey 5.11 Tactical Cargo Pants, Forest Green Rocky Combat Boots and Access Badge clipped on the Sleeve of his right arm, walked into the mess hall. He looked to his left arm and read the names that he had tatted below the Battle Cross on his Left Forearm for 25th Time today, wondering by the time he was done here how many more names would be on that list. He shook his head, and saluted as he walked past the Missing Man Table, and grabbed Breakfast, and took a seat as he watched the other members of TF Rainbow Filter In.

Abu al-Akarah
Ramstein Air Base
Germany

Walking into the dining hall, the young man from the backwater country of Yemen was a little surprised as to how empty the room was, aside from one other person. Green eyes wide with fear and some excitement, Abu al-Akarah took advantage of how quiet it was. He glanced around, wondering if he was just the first one here, or everyone was somewhere else. Either way, at least he could attempt to have a natural conversation with another human being.

Akarah yanked his headscarf from his head, tightly squeezing the water out before tying it back around his head. He had never been in such cold, wet weather before, and decided it wasn't pleasant. Walking towards another soaking wet man in the room, Akarah paused after watching the man salute an empty table. He looked at the man, now a little more curious, and spoke up with thickly Arabic-accented English: "Is this something you do regarding your dead?"

Anna Gerhart walked in to the key card area and pulled out her card. She put to the scanne and it buzzed and she pushed. The door stayed shut. Anna frowned and tried again. Still shut.mAnna tried one more time and pulled. The door opened. Anna looked around in embarrassment before stepping inside, shivering in Germany's cold air and rain, her only clothing a Israeli medical Corps t-Shirt and sweatpants. She had her extreme tempetures uniform but it was still in her duffel. She walked towards a German English sign and found directions to the mess hall. Anna stepped inside and walked toward two men, one seated and the other standing. One seemed to be an American or Brit and the other was possibly a Turk, Afgahn, or Saudi. Who knew. She walked over to them and saluted the American one as he seemed to be in command. "Sergeant Anna Gerhart of the Israeli Special Medical Corps reporting for duty sir. I believe I'm your medic."

Alexei Demidov
Ramstein Air Base
Germany

Alexei walked from his quarters to the cafeteria quickly to avoid the rain. His blue beret was noticeable by many of the men in the station. It was a quick give away of his origin as a Spetnaz, he wore the usual olive green Russian uniform with the pendants that marked his rank of lieutenant. Alexei walked inside of the cafeteria and noticed there was already some people inside, most likely from his team. They had the same patch he had.

Alexei walked to the food table and grabbed a plate and began serving himself, today was meat loaf and spaghetti, veggies were also in the menu. He filled his plate and served himself some orange juice and walked to a table. He avoided his colleagues, not even looking at them. He took off his beret and set it on his shoulder strap. He prayed quickly and began eating.

Mama's food is better. He thought.

Aku Koskinen
Ramstein Air Base, Germany

Koskinen was one of the first inside the cafe. As a Finn Aku was used to the more than cold temperatures. At first he took a seat at a empty table, eating his meatloaf slowly and smiling as he looked at the faces of those who entered. The operator took one more bite before seeing a gathering of people at a single table, most of who had just sat down.

Aku began walking over. He felt that the most productive thing he could do was to talk to his new "co-workers". The cafeteria seemed different than Finland. Aku visited Germany when he was 12 and 13 and the atmosphere seemed different than his visit nearly a dozen years ago. America,he thought. The influence of America and their allies was a grasp that no nation could escape once caught in it. Koskinen stepped up to the table, waiting for the others two stop talking before he asked a simple question in his best English: "May I sit here?"

Wolfram Herrman
Ramstein AFB, Germany
January 9th 2012, 0730

If rain could just fuck off and die, that would be the greatest moment in Wolfram's life.

Back home it rained constantly, in Africa it rained constantly, in the Balkans it rained constantly, the only places it didn't rain always ended up fucking him over in some way or another. In Somalia when that fuckwit Matchee stuck a broomstick in a kid's ass, and in Afghanistan when he ate an IED.

Sighing he stepped into the mess hall, grey BDU still damp from the downpour, but besides the remnant water, there was nothing else on it. No unit patches, no rank insignia, no pins. It's as if he walked straight off the plane from spookville, the 'W. Herrman' stitched into the left breast of his coat the only thing that stuck out... At least uniform wise. His right hand and face were quite distinct, scarred and pocked to all hell, giving a closer resemblance to fried hamburger than skin. It was something that got mixed reactions back home, subordinates looked in awe or amazement that he was still 'in', and the look of: 'what the actual fuck are you still doing here' from his superiors. His wife and daughter always smiled though, and that's all he needed.

Any looks given from the others in the mess would be ignored, as the grizzled vet made his way over to the coffee machine. Grabbing one of the cups, he slipped it underneath one of the few nozzles, pressed a few buttons and listened to the grinding noise from within. Raising a brow, Wolfram couldn't help but eternally scream as what he could only describe as 'brown play-doh' was extruded from the nozzle and into the cup, followed by a lot of spraying and watery coffee grounds. As it finally stopped, he tilted the sorry excuse for a drink and looked for a few seconds. The words, "Fuck that noise." were swiftly followed by the cup and it's content being shit canned, with the large man moving to grab actual food.

The typical turd sausages, powdered mash potatoes, and the rather real looking toast is what he was supplied with. Not that he cared, warm food was warm food, and his sweetheart of a daughter occasionally sent cookies in the mail. So complaining wasn't really on his to do list. Especially since the sausages looked worse than they tasted.

Looking around he realized that everyone assembled was not of the GI persuasion, most not even from NATO member states. Right, they were probably his team members in some way shape or form. Better say hello in that case.

Finding his way to the biggest concentration, a quartet at a single table, and based from their patches and demeanor, they were Israeli, American, Finnish and... Yemeni? in origin. Noting that someone was already conversing, he sat down quietly, giving a nod to the Yemeni man.

Naomi Martinez
Ramstein AFB, Germany

Rain was something that didn't bother Naomi. Sure, some of the worst moments of her life, fighting Abu Sayyaf in the jungles of the southern Philippines, took place during heavy rainfall, but the rain didn't serve to remind her of that. Besides, these German rains were nowhere near the intensity of a southeast Asian monsoon. In fact, this relatively light rain was somewhat calming.

What instead bothered her the most was the cold. Having come from the Philippines to Germany only a few days ago, she was quite unprepared for it. She had tried to trade something for some cold weather gear, having not been issued with any in a tropical environment. She was eventually able to trade a spare BDU shirt bearing the Special Action Force's unique digital camo pattern to an American quartermaster in exchange for an OCP parka that was a few sizes too big for her. Even with that, she still found herself freezing on these cold German mornings, even just with the short walks from the barracks to the gym for her morning exercise routine, and then from the gym to the mess hall for some breakfast.

Arriving at the mess hall, she took off her parka and hung it on a hook, revealing her standard SAF BDU, bearing the insignia of the unit and subdued Filipino flags. She immediately made her way over to the coffee machine. An older man had just gotten some coffee before her, but threw it out without drinking it. When Naomi got her coffee afterwards, she could see why. It was mostly water and coffee grounds. Damn Americans have the highest defense budget in the world but can't have a functional coffee machine, she thought to herself as she instead dumped a packet of hot chocolate mix and hot water into a cup, which she then proceeded to take a large gulp of, and then moved on to grab some food. Eggs, bacon and toast, which all looked surprisingly normal for mess hall food. The taste of the eggs was a little bit off, but they would have to do.

Looking around at the tables, she spotted one with a relatively large group of personnel. An American, and Israeli, some sort of Arab or something, and the older man who had tried his luck with the coffee machine before her, who had no flags or anything on his uniform and very well could have been from anywhere in the world. There was another table where a lone Russian was sitting, but Naomi decided to sit with the larger group of what she assumed was her team. She sat at the table, simply greeted the others with "good morning," and began to eat.

Akarah watched as several more operators entered the building. Russian, Finnish, Israeli, German, Filipino . . . He nodded back when the German nodded to him, and glanced at the Filipino making hot chocolate. The Russian didn't look happy with the meatloaf, and Akarah decided to feel suspicious about the meatloaf as well, and not because of his religion's ban of pork--he had eaten pork on more than one occasion--but because meatloaf in general looked and sounded gross, no matter who made it. It could have the freshest beef and it still looked nasty, but, either way, in this place, it was food, and someone was going to get pissy if Akarah refused to eat the food for non-religious reasons.

After standing around, feeling like he was serving no purpose, Akarah finally decided to get some food and sit with someone, and he settled on the Russian. He wanted to avoid awkwardness as much as possible, so he decided to impress the Spetsnaz man by speaking Russian, even though it was heavily accented and stuttered. "Greetings. I . . . I can tell by your face you are not happy with the food?"

Alexei kept eating alone for a while as more and more people entered the mess hall. He wasn't very fond of making friends in this new unit, if it was up to him he would be back to Vladivostok at the first chance. The spaghetti wasn't so awful, it was rather tasty, the veggies were also fresh and the juice was sweet.

The meatloaf was average. Alexei didn't have a problem eating whatever, when you spend 6 months in a Turkish prison you get used to eating anything. Alexei was caught by surprise when an Arab looking fellow operator sat in front of him. He spoke Russian and made an odd accent as he spoke.

"Greetings. I... I can tell by your face you are not happy with the food?" He said.

Alexei took a spoonful of the meatloaf then took a sip of the juice. He then spoke.

"Could be better. I learned to eat anything." He said coldly.

Aku Koskinen
Ramstein Air Base
Germany

Koskinen watched two others sit down. One was a older, more experienced looking man who didn't have a patch or a insignia that expressed their nationality and the second was a woman from...Malaysia or the Philippines. Koskinen found that one troubling. The operator bit his lip, laughing internally on how awkward the situation was. Aku poked the meatloaf with his fork, withdrawing a sizeable chunk and eating it. Not bad... He thought. It was still odd to be eating it at breakfast but he just wasn't in the mood for eggs or sausage. The meatloaf was probably leftovers from a day or two but that didn't bother the Finn. Koskinen thought of something to say right now, something that would allow the group at the table to actually say something.

Aku was so busy thinking that when he opened his mouth to speak he almost said something in Finnish. He caught himself and after a quick cough into his fist he began again in English. "So, where are you all from?"

Things became distinctly silent as the Arabic man walked away. A bit rude seeing as the man he spoke to had yet to reply. Regardless, someone else picked up the slack.

Looking up at the Finn, Wolfram cleared his throat before speaking, "Born in Freiburg here in Germany, raised in Victoria, Canada. JTF2. Pretty used to the wet and cold at this point." He took a bite of 'potatoes', the gritty powdery taste reminding him that it was once likely freeze dried. "Though I'm sure you didn't come halfway across Europe to listen to an old man ramble on about his life. So how about you? Where are you from in Finland?"

He then continued. "I never been to Syria. My father was in Afghanistan though. I served in Chechnyan wars. Also Georgia, as well as other places I'm not at liberty to say." He took another spoonful, chewed, then swallowed.

"I was assigned to this team for my knowledge of explosives and weaponry. It's what a degree in engineering in biochemistry gives you. I've disarmed about 200 explosives in my career. But there's also an art in disarming the ones that are not your creation." After that monologue Alexei kept eating.

Not long after Naomi sat down, the Arab man abruptly left the table to go talk to the Russian sitting by himself. Strange behaivor, but at least he had taken it upon hinmself to talk to the Russian when nobody else had. Although she thought it seemed like the Russian was avoiding everyone on purpose. Old rivalries die hard sometimes. If a Japanese operator were to show up for example, she would probably feel a little awkward interacting with them, no matter how removed from the atrocities of World War II they might be.

As she continued to eat, someone finally tried to defuse the awkward silence that had descended since the Arab man's departure, with the Finn asking where everyone was from. So far there was the Finn of course, the older, heavily scarred man Naomi had seen before turned out to be a Canadian JTF2 operator. She had never worked with them before, but she heard a few of the American special forces she had previously worked and trained with speak quite highly of them. And then the other was an Israeli woman. She continued to eat and sip at her hot chocolate until finally, it came to her turn to introduce herself.

"I'm from the Philippines. I've been in the Special Action Force of the Philippine National Police for almost 10 years now. I've dealt with everything from armed robbers with a couple handguns to heavily armed Abu Sayyaf jihadis," She began, her voice seeming almost a little too soft-spoken for someone who had been putting themselves in harm's way for such a long time. "I can't say I'm used to cold like this obviously so I'm kind of hoping we get deployed somewhere warm."

Capt Jack Nguyen, USAF
Task Force RAINBOW
Ramstein AFB, Federal Republic of Germany (ICAO code: ETAR)
09/JAN/12
07:46 Central European Time/06:46 Universal Standard Time/23:46 Pacific Standard Time

A 37th Airlift Squadron Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules made its approach to Runway 27 at Ramstein Air Force Base, more than one square mile of sovereign American territory. On board were more than 90 US military personnel, most of them Airmen. Sixteen of them were "Battlefield Airmen", or Special Operations Airmen. Those sixteen were a motley of SpecOps Airmen; three were Combat Controllers, three more were Tactical Air Control Party, two were Special Operations Weather Technicians, and the rest were Pararescuemen. Jack Nguyen did not count himself when he and the Battlefield Airmen boarded the Super Hercules nearly an hour and a half ago at RAF Lakenheath; as a Special Tactics Officer, he was qualified to be both a Combat Control Officer and a Combat Rescue Officer and therefore blurred the line.

He leaned more towards the Combat Control side as he earned the right to wear the scarlet beret Combat Controllers proudly wore with their Airman Battle Uniforms and Blues. One could argue, however, that he was more of a Combat Rescue Officer because the 28-year-old Air Force Academy graduate's Air Force Cross citation was for treating four wounded 10th Mountain Division Soldiers while they were under fire and had a bullet in his left shoulder, though he did use CCT skills when he called in a 563rd Rescue Group HH-60G Pave Hawk and two A-10C Thunderbolt IIs from the 74th Fighter Squadron.

As the C-130 landed and taxied up to the ramp, Nguyen got his beret out from his right cargo pocket of his ABU and straightened it out. He grabbed his gear—a black Long Range Bug Out Bag, a black duffel bag, a Warrior Aid and Litter Kit bag, and two Combat Casualty Response Kits—and unbuckled his restraint belt when the engines wound down. Inside his black duffel bag were his weapons—an M-4A1 SOPMOD rifle, a Mk. 14 Mod 0 battle rifle, and a Mk. 23, all disassembled for safety.

"Just like home," he said as he clipped his RAINBOW badge onto his ABU coat's left breast pocket flap. "Cold and rainy." He hefted all of his gear by himself down the ramp and immediately went to the transportation office, where the Airman manning the desk arranged a shuttle to the RAINBOW compound.
-------
The shuttle bus dropped Jack off at the compound. By then, the heavy rain had turned into lighter showers. Though Washington (Joint Base Lewiw-McChord in particular) was quite rainy, it didn't have that much wind when compared to Ramstein. He waved his badge in front of the card reader for a few seconds before it chimed and granted him access. The Captain walked in through the walls and found his way to the barracks, where he set his stuff down on an empty rack before joining his new teammates for breakfast.

Wolfram shrugged. "We're black ops now. We no longer exist to anyone but out superiors and our family. The unit started in 2010 I think, got shut down soon after, and we're it's revival team. From my witnessing, everyone except Baby Blue," Wolfram gestured to the Russian at the other table, the nickname stemming from the GRU's definitive Berets and striped shirts, "Hot shit PJ." another gesture to the man who just walked in, "And my deep fried ass, are all regulars or police. Not a bad thing, just a rather jarring transition."

Another bite of potatoes, "Obviously there's gonna be a bit of training to bump you up a bit, so you aren't gunned down. But if you need any help with that you can talk to me. Been doing this for about 23 years now while juggling raising a daughter and avoiding a divorce. So I'm not short on patience or experience."

"Anything, huh?" Akarah replied, smiling a little. "I will admire your courage, then. I could not eat anything." He was quiet for a moment, studying the Russian man's face. Gradually, Akarah realized that he wasn't sure what else to say, and went with probably the most obvious thing he should do. "My name is Abu al-Akarah, from Yemen, but, I served in Syria, alongside the army, for a few months. Not much, but, I learned how to set and disarm bombs if that counts as something."

"Alexei... Alexei Demidov. Please to meet you." Alexei said as he kept eating. He noticed Akarah was rather nervous or at least uneasy.

And have maybe used more than that on living things. It's an art you know, to make the most effective explosives and use them with lethality, and effectiveness. But there's also an art in disarming the ones that are not your creation." After that monologue Alexei kept eating.

Akarah's smile faded as he struggled to translate Alexei's monologue in his head. He was lost at "engineering" and everything after that became a jumbled-up mess, making him feel bad about having not focused more on his Russian. He had a harder time learning it with two completely different alphabets in his head--Arabic and English--along with not having that much time to learn at all. With a guilty expression on his face, Akarah said, "I'm sorry . . . I can't understand everything you said."

After Naomi was done speaking Koskinen nodded and looked over to the Israeli. "I was invited by someone I knew in the force. Didn't say much other than that I should volunteer. Hopefully who ever is in charge steps up and gives us a introduction or something,"Koskinen said before finishing off his meatloaf. Koskinen felt a bit of pride as he thought about who he was sitting next to at this moment and what they did for their countries to get here. "So, how did you all find out about this organization?"

Joseph hadn't even had time to reply to what Akarah had asked him before a few others appeared. He listened to the conversation before decided to put himself in the conversation, after eating some lovely powdered eggs, and some microwavable bacon.

"Originally part of TF Black, but in 2006 Rainbow Split off and became its own Task Force, but for what ever reason it was shut down in 2010, but the Canadian is right we are it's revival team. We are one of four field teams for TF Rainbow. I am a CIA Paramilitary Officer, I was A Combat Controller from 01 to 10 before our lovely Task Force commander stole me away to the CIA, and then came here with him to be one of the field commanders. Also any of y'all that have Dependents like a spouse and kids, well plenty of base housing to move them here, and plenty of places off base as well. Any Way I am Joseph Bridges, the Commander for our team."

Aiden had just finished his morning run and had just finished his shower. The rain was a bit annoying but he was able to get through it. As he got dressed he made sure everything was squared away and headed out. He walked to the mess hall, hurrying through the rain. As he entered the mess hall he saw a few others from the team. He waved over and headed to get his food. Aiden tried to eat a balanced diet to maintain a healthy lifestyle. He ate a wide variety of food full of nutrients. He was a firm believer in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

As he grabbed his food he made his way over to the relatively large group with an American, Asian, and few others. He placed his tray on the table seating a seat away.

"Sup guys... Mind if I join you for breakfast?" Aiden saw that it would be best if he became friends with the group and formed a bond between the team.

Nguyen was busy pouring some hot water into a bowl of instant oatmeal when he heard Thomson.

"Yeah, sure," he said as he shook some brown sugar into the bowl. Then he took a packet of instant coffee and poured it into a cup full of hot water before mixing it with enough cream to give someone a stroke and enough sugar to get diabetes. "Coffee machine's out, so all we got right now is just instant."

Alexei wasn't surprised that the Arab would not understand much. He gave a slight chuckled and finished eating the meatloaf.

"Do not worry. It is mild info you wouldn't be interested in." He said in English, with a heavy accent.

"I served in Georgia and Chechnya. As well as other places." He said again English.

Speaking English was a requirement for him sing part of this team. Taking four years of English in high school proved to be handy after all.

"I understood that part," Akarah said. "It was the phrases after that I lost, and . . . I'm sorry, I really should be knowledgeable about your language. After all, your leader supports the leader I served under." Akarah wasn't sure if saying names was a good thing here, and he hoped Alexei knew who he meant. "Maybe one day, your leader will have to send men and arms to Syria."
