How will Canada's fully legalized Marijuana affect the US?

Postby Jerzylvania » Thu Apr 13, 2017 12:47 pm

That's right!
Marijuana will be legal for adult Canadians and the nations visitors beginning on Canada Day, July 1, 2018.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/13/worl ... .html?_r=0

There are many angles to this development. There are a few geopolitical questions for starters.
Marijuana will be legal nationwide for the first time in a G-7 nation and only the second in the Western Hemisphere with the other being Uruguay. Our large liberal neighbor to the north with which we share a 3,987 mile border, and that's excluding the border between Alaska and Canada which is another 1538 miles is more like us than any other country on Earth. The reality of marijuana being fully legal across this border wherein Donald Trump is not building a wall hasn't had time to sink in yet. There's plenty of food for thought on this subject.
Do you think US states on the border with Canada could react by sooner legalizing recreational weed rather than lose revenue and perhaps even some taxpaying citizens? Sparsely populated North Dakota may become wary of that angle. Other states like Maine, Washington & Alaska have already approved some form of legal weed. So what is this? Is this the new normal or will Canada be pressured by the US to abandon this idea?

Will Mexico and the nations to it's south feel emboldened by Canada's move to legalize and do likewise?
Since Canada is America's #1 trading partner, will there be chaos at customs as products shipping south are suspected of pot smuggling? What other economic impacts might we see?

Why join to fight a drug war with the US if neighboring Canada won't even prohibit Marijuana? Is the War on Drugs effectively over?
Is it even fair to include Marijuana in the so called War on Drugs in the first place?

These and many other aspects of fully legal Canadian Marijuana are just waiting to be discussed. Why not join in?
Just remember, expressing differences of opinion can become highly passionate. Civility in the words chosen to express an opinion can be seen as an art. Impress us.

It is a darned shame, because pot has long lasting negative effects on the body that people just aren't recognizing. It can make someone permanently stupid or lazy depending on when they started the habit, how long they're on it, or whether they ever quit. An entire generation having access to marijuana from an early age will be disastrous.

Yet, you don't say the same thing about the countless generations having access to cigarettes or alcohol...

Let's see that proven.
Country A has only alcohol as a recreational drug. Country B has only Marijuana for recreational use and Country C has no legal recreational intoxicants.
After about thirty years data get back to me.

Yep, that's why the past three or four generations have grown up stunted and stupid.

The marijuana of old is by no means as potent as the modern-day stuff.

It's one thing to say that marijuana a Category 1 gateway drug, but it's quite another to make something recreational that clearly should not be.

Plus, the regulation and tax revenue can help benefit the provincial and federal governments, although it depends on where the monies collected go to.

I'm only 23, so...

Regardless, yes, yes it is. There are numerous studies that have been done on the topic. PBS is a neutral news source, and even it has done articles on the increased potency of modern-day pot.

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/pot-getting-potent/

And in terms of negative health effects:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_(drug)#Adverse_effects

So do kindly research things before you falsely call people out on BS.

Then by all means, legalize it and wait and see how many millenials' lives will be ruined because of it.

Medical marijuana is fine, but that's not really what Canada legalizing pot entails.

We're legalizing it for its recreational use by the general public, which inevitably means the highly potent shit coming onto the market, openly. This is not a good situation by any means.

because there was no real reason to ever ban it

the real question is why it took 100 years to make any real progress on fixing that mistake and how long it's going to take us to fix the other mistakes the geniuses in charge and the moral guardians have made recently
ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington have all had legal marijuana, and it's been doing more good than harm (Actually, Colorado and Washington are making so much tax money off of pot that they're pumping the tax money into schools and other social services).

They should change the leaf on the flag to reflect this.

In all seriousness, good for Canada. I personally wouldn't consider touching the stuff, but if people want to use it then they should have the freedom too.
