The Luxurious Wasteland [IC|OPEN]

Postby The Palmetto » Mon Apr 10, 2017 8:36 am

The Luxurious Wasteland

Have you ever wondered what would happen if society ended in a global scale, but wasn't irradiated? What new life forms would arise, and how would humanity deal with this?

The Luxurious Wasteland takes place in a post-apocalyptic American Eastern Coast 14,000 years after a large meteor impact caused society to collapse, but not even robots from that time know this. But it's not all a dry hellhole as you may think. The Southern coast as lush forests and gorgeous beaches, while the North is covered in snowy forests and conifers. But, as luxurious as the environment may be, it has its downsides. The forests are abundant with giant insects, terrestrial crocodiles, and mammals are almost non-existent. Strangely enough, there are also a wide variety of evolved crayfish. From simple swimmers to complex gliders, you can't go 2 steps without spotting one.
But there's intelligent life, too. Human settlements are abundant are in New England, simply called the North, while some smaller ones dot the South, even though these are under constant attack by the wildlife. The Luxurious Wasteland follows a group of Southern survivors looking to band together and make the perilous journey to the North. They will come across many small factions, and discover horrible truths about their world while evading mysterious forces and blatantly dangerous threats. It will start out in the ruins of an old junkyard next to the ruins of an old town in South Carolina.

Current plot location and action: Our characters are at a ruined church, trying to survive an impending attack by a Therimu

OOC: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?ns=1&f=31&t=408671&p=31491629#p31491629

Before the war, around the 2050's, the USA and it's close allies were at war with several South American countries, which had turned communist and refused to trade with them. They committed many civil rights violations by killing capitalists and capitalist sympathizers, so they were eager to use this as an excuse to claim their resources. They tested many new weapons on them, ranging from giant robots to biological abominations. China wasn't communist anymore, so they had no issues with this, and helped them with robotics. This spouted a golden age in robotics, allowing fully independent A.I. to be created. This would also create several new, quickly evolving artificial species that would evolve to spread into the North American jungles after the apocalypse.

Factions in the South, where TLW takes place, don't really have much of a hold on their claimed land and are small. Why? The many monstrosities roaming the Eastern Coast are hard to fight and are very common, so making any settlements or claiming land without a heavily armed, defensive perimeter is near-impossible. Unlike many post-apocalypse, sci-fi universes, Raiders don't exist. Working guns aren't available to humans, everyone is stuck using melee weapons or just simple bows and arrows.
if you have any questions about the lore or wish to add to the lore, ask me and I'll answer your question, or canonize your contribution.

Rules:
1) As the creator I always have the final say, I can choose to deny any application for any reason.
2) No god-modding or controlling another's character without their consent.
3) Normal players may only RP as a human, robot, or bipedal crayfish.
4) Your character may not start out with a gun or similar weapon, any guns created before the apocalypse have been decayed. Guns will be earned as the RP goes on.
5) There is no limit to characters, but I expect you to be reasonable.
6) No flaming or being rude to other players.
7) Keep it PG-14, gore is allowed but don't go overboard.
8 ) If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, I love answering them, and you are not being a bother.
9) No magic allowed, period.
10) No one-liners allowed, but don't go overboard, either. Try to have at least a paragraph.
11) When making a robotic character, try to avoid making them too advanced. Advanced tech will be added soon, and robot characters can be upgraded.
12) It's been 14,000 years since the apocalypse, act like it! No original clothes would be in a usable condition, and even basic modern day knowledge would be unknown unless your character specializes as a historian or if they're a robot. Same goes for terminologies, names, etc.
13) If you want to make some lore that would be significant for the universe, like an organization or anything pre-apocalypse, ask me first.
14) Mammals larger than a cat are essentially non-existent in the South, but still rare up North as well. Remember this.

Active Roster
Tyler C. Boyler - Boejoe
MAAP, TR-0JAN 211, Virgil 543 - The Imperial Regions of Commerce
Orion-5 - The Imperium Empires
Anna Dobringo - Hothnia
Hrothkiir Builds-The-Pyre - The Holy Empire of Steel
Scrappy - The Palmetto
Theresa - Prusselanden
Nurk "Boot" Samson - Zeclil
Was your application accepted, but your character not placed on the roster? I wait until a person has sent their first reply in, then I add their character(s).

Humans: Average human, what can I say? They typically live in small settlements, with religious cults being commonplace. There are also wandering tribes, plenty of loners too. They need to eat, drink, and sleep, but are the only species who can tame animals. They are also some sub-species that have evolved, but they do not have any drastically different traits.

Robots: There's a wide variety of robots, but most of them come from before the apocalypse, managing to keep themselves intact. Some are relatively new, however, but know nothing about how they were created. They're almost always in small groups or as loners. They don't need to eat, drink, or sleep, are good mechanics, but have to repair themselves with scarce parts. Their only source of energy are their solar panels, and they will run out of energy if they lose them.

Image
Bipedal Crayfish: Very strange, 7ft tall crayfish. It's almost as if someone made a crayfish gigantic, then added legs to them. They need to eat, sleep, and drink, but are extremely durable and strong, and can survive underwater for several hours. However, they need to eat large amounts of food, are slow, and have below average intellect.

If you are a human, you can start out with only one species but tame more as the game goes on.

Therimu: The result of ancient genetic experiments, Therimu are terrifying, 10ft tall emus with gigantic claws and are extremely territorial towards other creatures, especially bipedal crayfish. They have thick hide, and killing them is extremely difficult. They can not be tamed as adults by humans, but can be raised from eggs to be used as mounts and defense. You may not start out with one. The opportunity may arise to get an egg, but the hatchlings grow extremely slowly.

Gliding Crayfish: 2ft long crayfish with vibrant wings. They may harass humans and other creatures, but only attack smaller creatures by swooping down and impaling them. They can be tamed by humans by dropping your weapon, and giving them food. From that point, they will follow you and "beg" for food. After doing this several times, they will become a loyal companion used to harass enemies and gather food. You may start out with one if human. There is also a smaller subspecies called the Surfing Crayfish, which is semi-aquatic. You may start out with two if human.

Horror Bird: 3ft tall flightless birds. They hunt in small groups and are worthy fighters. They are skilled with hunting and scavenging, and domesticated females will lay one egg every two days unless they are incubating. They can be raised as eggs or fed food, causing them to follow and eventually bond with you. They can be tamed for companionship, egg production, and scavenging. You can start out with a single adult, multiple eggs, and 3 chicks.

Giant Roach: 1ft long, giant roaches. These creatures can't be tamed but are a common source of food. They have limited light capabilities and can swarm any would-be attackers.

Carolina Catfish: 4ft long catfish found lurking in shallow waters next to trees. Can not be tamed, but can be harvested for food.

Invasive Monitors: 5ft long aggressive lizards with a venomous bite. Can not be tamed, but can be harvested for food and hide.

Land Eel: Brightly colored lungfish about 4ft long, they can slither and breathe on land as long as they're moist. They can be tamed by being fed once, but can't be eaten and only serve as companions and minnow/crayfish catchers. You may start out with one if human.

Giant Scorpion: 2ft long scorpion with thick hide and dangerous, but not fatal, sting. They can't be tamed, but can be harvested for food and hide.

Baitfish: Schooling fish the size of your finger. Can't be tamed, but can be used for bait.

Phylocherax: Blue crayfish about 6in. Can't be tamed, but can be used for food and bait.

Poland Balls: 6inch long Isopods with varying colors, typically matching up with that of a flag with two fake eyes. Can be tamed merely by picking them up, but serve no purpose but companionship. You may start out with 3, regardless of race.

Want to make a custom animal? Just give me a description and if you can tame it or not, and I'll see about adding it. There are WAY more creatures, but these are the only ones I have mentioned so far.

Name:

Species:

Appearance:

Personality: (optional)

Skills:

Weaknesses:

Bio: (optional)

Equipment:

Name: Scrappy

Species: Robot

Appearance: 7ft tall robot made of junk, with an boxy TV for a chest and a crash-test dummy head with cameras installed.

Personality: He's charismatic with a large ego, but sticks up for his friends. He tends to be survival-minded, however, and would sacrifice those who aren't close to him without regret.

Skills: Skilled mechanic, with a classy voice box making him charismatic. He has basic knowledge of the pre-apocalypse world, too.

Weaknesses: Sloppy fighter, large ego, chaotic body design means that hitting him in the right spot could disable him.

Bio: Unknown, he currently rests deactivated in a junkyard.

Equipment: Tool kit stored in his chest, and a long hedge-trimmer blade attached to a handle.

Factions are a work-in-progress.

The Crus Peregrinus: A mysterious group of recently built robots up north. They have one large outpost stationed in the South and several scattered, smaller ones. No one knows their motives, and no one knows where their outposts are. However, what is known is that they are secretive and not friendly to anyone who threatens their secrecy. Their signature flag is white with a black cog. You may not control one, not yet, that is.

The Palmetto Guard: A loosely-connected group of humans living in heavily guarded forts, the citizens pay taxes and each fort has its own small militia. The soldiers are skilled in survival and combat, and typically go out to hunt for food and/or supplies. Their signature flag is a white flag with a red star and a palmetto in the center. They have a population of 1,400, and you may control a soldier with a melee weapon.

The above two factions are controlled by me, I will allow players to control factions after they've been here for a while

The lore of TLW is surprisingly deep and complex, as I've been working on it for almost two years. So don't be deceived by the vague introduction.

Scrappy
The Junkyard

It was a bright day in The Junkyard. The sun glistened over the rusted metal, chasing it to glow brightly. The bushes and trees rustled as creatures ran around in them, chasing their prey or being hunted by a predator. The heaps of metal and trash were silent, except for the suddenly rustling of a pile of junk, next to a long-decayed structure. A large machine, built of junk, woke up. It couldn't stand, as it was missing part of a leg, but it could move its upper body. It looked around with its crash test dummy head, surveying the area with its camera eyes. "Where am I? I can't remember anything," It spoke with concern in a masculine tone, "I remember one thing, my name. It's Scrappy." He looked with concern at his missing leg. "No problem," he spoke to himself, crawling around until he found an ancient prosthetic, then wired it to his leg. "That certainly feels a lot better! Time to take this babies out for a spin!" He jumped up, surprisingly fluid for a junk machine, and examined his surroundings. He found what remained of an old box, and opened it to find a bush trimmer blade attached to a hammer's handle, "This should be useful. I don't know what the world has in store for me, so I suppose I'll just have to find out!" With that, Scrappy set off, carrying his new weapon as he walked towards the ruins of an ancient village.

Anna walked through the lush forest watching the trees. Everything was beautiful. But with beauty comes danger. The woods the around her were filled to the brim with large, dangerous creatures waiting for their next meal. But she had no choice but to go this path. A large group of men from the village had chased her in here after she had stolen their map of the surrounding area. She was sure they would be waiting for her if she went back out. So she continued walking, her stolen prize gripped in her right hand her left on the hilt of her sword. She walked on and on, kicking a line one across the leaf covered ground. Growling came from behind her. She turned around and saw a massive thing. She wasn't sure what it was. She unsheathed her sword and tucked the map into her pocket. The creature leaped at her and she swung clumsily, missing by a mile. The thing pinned her down and she screamed in terror, waiting for the end.

Orion’s optic came online after a period of recharge he ended up doing every day. When his optics activated he looked around at the crumbling wall of what was once sewer lines. Though obviously hadn’t been used in many years. He looked around at the room he was in lined with shelves and racks full of random junk he had collected overtime, from spoons to old cans, they aligned the room. He had an odd fascination with human junk, though they didn’t make it anymore he collected it when he found it.

Standing up Orion grabbed the staff he had created as a weapon and the bag he used to carry supplies. Once he had all he needed, he opens the sewer grate and crawled out. The bright sunlight shining into his optic causing it to readjust to the light level outside. The outside was quite beautiful with trees overhanging and the ruins of several building dotting the area. Turning his attention towards the old junkyard in which he went to everyday as it tended to have junk to use. As he was heading there his audio receptors picked up noise coming from the junk yard. Quickly readying himself he ran towards the junk yard quickly to confront whatever had come.

Scrappy walked around, gazing at this strange new world, until he was interrupted by what appeared to be screaming. "Who was that?" He asked aloud, pulling out his weapon and holding it defensively, looking out for any would be attackers. He cautiously moved towards the source of it, and prepared to fight. He had no idea what was attacking the woman or why, and he couldn't fight either. He wasn't programmed to, after all. But he was fairly confident that his saw blade would be good enough, and he stabbed it into the creature, hoping to injure, kill or scare it off. "What the hell is that thing? Are you ok?" Scrappy asked her.

OOC: you probably know this, but it's worth mentioning that any mammals larger than a cat just don't exist in the South, other than humans.

Orion was quick to arrive on the scene where the noise was coming from, he came across a girl and another robot standing near some recently deceased animal. Preparing his weapon he approaches them. Focusing his optic he calls out to them " Hello do you require assistance at all". He looks at the two individuals in front of him, some young girl and a pile of junk on legs.

Anna breathed a sigh of relief. " I'm fine thanks to you. I'm Anna. Currently unemployed and trying not to get caught. And you are?" Anna brushed herself off and grabbed her sword, sliding it back into its sheath. The blade was slightly dented and she frowned. Hopefully one of the newcomers could fix it.

Orion looked at the girl and calmly said " I am Orion-5, oh your sword looks slightly damaged may I repair it,I have the tools necessary for it's repair". Orion then held his hand out in an offering as he had seen humans do before. He looked at the girl and noticed she could be no older then 21 but his scanners were a little off so he couldn't say for certain.

Anna reluctantly drew her sword and handed it over to the battle robot. He looked dangerous and she didn't like it. The other one on the other hand was a mess. He had random parts everywhere and seemed discombobulated. She liked his messy almost carefree look. One was obviously former US military ( she knew her history) and the other looked like a children's toy. " You guys know each other for long?"

Orion took the sword and began examining it, it was minor damaged and would not take long to repair. He looked back at the girl" You means rust bucket over here, no can't say I know him, your the first individual I have interacted with in the last 50 years, this place is quite lonely". He then placed the sword on top of a flat rock and pulled out a welding tool ad a few other bits and bobs and began fixing the sword.

He looked at her with ironic shock. "Wow, I saved your life and you go ahead and call me a rust bucket. Thanks for that, I'll remember just to let the creature kill you next time this happens," He remarked sarcastically, his voice shockingly charismatic for such a rough exterior. "I'm Scrappy, and you two are.........?" He asked the two, boredly swinging his sword in his hand. One appeared like the various diverse millitary robot designs, while the other appeared to be a human female in her early adulthood.

Orion just stares and lets out a small chuckle. " Hey rust bucket I called you rust bucket, you need your audio receptors checked". He just laughed and looked at him up and down. The only though was that this useless junk trap ain't going to last all of five minutes in this world. ' Im Orion-5 and you are what Rusty?". He looked back at the girl and just shook his head, he may not be a great fighter but he couldn't imagine why he came across these two.

"Alright, cyclops, my hearing may not be the best but at least I have binocular vision. You look like a blocky security camera," he replied, keeping his sarcastic, charismatic voice. "The name is Scrappy, not Rusty. I've actually kept myself fairly rust free somehow, thank you very much," he added, looking at his body structure. It was covered in dirt and scratch marks, but had a shockingly low amount of rust. "But hey, no need to get angry, babe," he said, concluding his responses to the millitary robot.

Orion just looked at 'Scrappy' and chuckled. This Scrappy guy was witty, and good at comebacks. " Finally someone who can make good comebacks, the people around here are for the most part pretty dumb, also call me cyclops again and I will rip you a new one". He then picked his weapon back up and looked between the two of them, "Anyone got any ideas what we should do, I have literally nothing to do also I have a good feeling this human here ain't gonna last long".

He laughed, his mechanical eyes showing a look of overwhelming hilarity. "Oh, calm down sweetheart! I just saved your life, try lightening up a bit," he said with a wink. "I don't have any off switch either, why would I? Robots are immortal, you'll age!" He said, still chuckling wildly. If he was organic, he would be crying of laughter by now.

Orion just laughed and stared at this girl. " Why would I have an off switch either, remember you can get sick, starve, dehydration and so on also like Scrapy said you age, we don't".Orion just shook his head from side to side and gave another small chuckle. " Robots superior, Humans Inferior".

Tyler C. Boyer
The 3 huts close to a stream

It was a sunny day. Tyler was inside, tinkering with something he found. Tyler was an adult, but he still kind of acted like a kid. He lived with his parents near a river and a couple years ago, He moved to the second hut with his brother. The third hut was a bathroom. "Mom, look what I made!" Tyler said. His mom came into his hut. "That's cool!" Said his mom. Tyler was happy. "I'll go find something to eat" tyler said. "Ok. Be back soon!" Said his mom. Tyler got his knife, his bow, his fishing rod, and a few arrows and began skipping to the stream. " I'll fish for some fish!" He said. He went by the stream but when he got there, he saw 2 robots and a women talking so he went behind a bush and looked at them. "Robots superior, Humans inferior" was what he heard from one of the robots. "I bet that if I had some computer or robot, I could easily hack him and destroy him" Tyler thought. "Though Maybe I should just try and make friends with those robots and that woman."

Orion just shrugs at her and follows her towards the bush. Orion just looks at the bush and his audio receptors pick up noise as well." I believe you should come out now or this will get very violent very quickly". He holds his weapon and pokes the bush with it hoping to gain a reaction.

"Darn it. Umm... hi. How are you doing today? Please don't hurt me... I come in peace!" Tyler said as he touched a pouch on his clothes and got up. "I don't want this to escalate into a fight. We all already have enough to deal with I'm pretty sure. More enemies won't help us in any way." Tyler said.

Orion looks at the newcomer with suspicion, is this like a party, is everyone in the world coming or something? " Okay kid who are you and what do you want, this ain't a party, uhh you know what a party is right?". Orion then shake shakes head and tells the kid" Arms in the air we need to make sure you have no weapons".

"Of course I know what a party is." Tyler said. Then he put his arms in the air. "Damn it. Well, I'm screwed. Also, this robot is a cocky idiot." He thought.

The sun glistened through the trees of a forrest, as their leaves swayed in the wind. But the sounds of birds and insects wee replaced with a large clanking of metal. Mechanical stomps could be heard from afar, and creatures flew off their perches when the sound came near. The origin of the noises was a robot. But this robot was a behemoth of steel. It was huge. A brooding and hulking presence loomed inside the forrest. The machine had two large legs that moved back and forth ever slowly, grinding rusted metal as they walked, and it had a large body and a head that peeked out like a turtles. Deactivated guns swilved around with every movement, hanging lifeless. Mud and rust covered the armor plating, and it gave the robot a slight camouflage element. Inside the machine it was a different story. It was quite clean and tidy, and the spacious inside was mostly uninhabited. But there were two residents: Trojan, a combat machine, and Vergil, a repair droid.Trojan was sitting on a bench, sharping his sword with a knife. Virgil was hanging upside down inside the cockpit, with his main legs were clamped into the ceiling and some of his minor appendages were rapidly typing and switching buttons. His comically large head module turned 360 as he observed panels and screens.

"Thats far enough!"

The entire machine suddenly froze. Trojan's sharping knife fell out of his hand as the machine shook. He looked up towards the cockpit room.

"Utter incompetence."

Virgil turned his head and one large bubble optic started at a small screen.

"This is what happens when a walker is numerously allowed to propel itself. The humans must have been moderate pilots, for they certainly could not have allowed walkers to operate themselves. I informed you, MAAP, that proceeding southeast into the forrest would lead to structural injuries. And once more I am correct. It seems that a large tree branched has wedged itself into your left leg, upper joint section."

A yellow eye near the center of the controls for the machine flashed on. It spoke in a strangely monotone voice. The pupil flashed as it spoke.

"I do sense some, stress, in that area. It would be best to remove the branch. It would be a shame for my leg to snap."

Virgil gave out a mechanical sigh, and his legs unclamped from the ceiling and he landed on his legs when he popped off. His secondary arms folded into his body, and he began to crawl out of the cockpit section. After moving across a wall, his secondary arms folded out and pushed open a hatch, and then he crawled out. The robot scurried across the outside of the walker, then crawled down the leg. He observed the large branch stuck into the joint, then his additional arms folded out. A buzzsaw started spinning and the bot went to work. After eight minutes he crawled back up the machine like a spider and dashed into the hatch.

"It is always a dreadful experience outside, how I hate my time out there. Such mutated and undocumented creatures lurk all around you! Nature should always be regulated, or it begins to appear like this when it runs rampant."

Trojan looked up and his facial sensors swirled around and buzzed. He was now scrubbing mud off his body with a cloth.

"No creature frightens me when I am armed with my sword. How easily they perish."

The deep voice called out once more, uttering Virgil's name.

"What now?"

He extended his legs and scurried across the ground and entered the cockpit. The yellow eye was online, but a large green light was flashing. And it never turns on. It was the human recognition device. And the walker began to move to intercept.

(OOC: Just a note, Yellow Ones do not speak English/common/basic naturally, and have their own distinct language. To show this, their speech will be bolded. This means that no one other than Yellow One's will be able to understand what is being said in Bold. Just wanted to make that clear :) )

Nu-Arbiter Hrothkiir Builds-The-Pyre of the Yellow Ones
The Great Swamps -- Three days ago -- Midnight

Tap...Tap Tap..Tap... The room was quiet, save only from the irregular droplets of rainwater dripping through a small hole in the patch-work roof. A lone figure stands tall among a sea of kneeling figures, their faces hidden from view under harsh shadows. The lone standing figure began walking forwards, each step landing where just moments before someone had been kneeling, each individual shifting out of the way just in time. The figure paused in the center of the cramped room, and the rest formed quick circles around them.

"You have all been summoned here today.." The standing figure began, it's feminine voice breaking the silence. "For reasons I'm sure you have all been made aware of. The room echoed with wild mutterings. The rumors are true. Our years of searching have come to an end. You will each be given a location to travel to, and you will all complete the task given to you. We all know what is at stake my brothers and sisters.. The figure paused for a moment, her voice haltering momentarily. The prophets' visions are coming true, Quetetlow will soon be upon us.. May we all bathe in the glory of our lords Samoset and Yashnu! And see victory, everlasting! The figure stretched out her hands to the leaky ceiling triumphantly, a single thick strand of pure white silk blooming upwards from the sudden motion.

The room reverberated in mighty cheers, each figure pounding at the floor with clenched fists to add to the noise.

Nu-Arbiter Hrothkiir Builds-The-Pyre of the Yellow Ones
Junkyard Town -- Outskirts -- Present Day

Every step was a living reminder of his discomfort. Every footfall added to the distance between him and his clan, a distance that turned his heart to lead. He had been walking for three days now, only ever stopping to take a few quick, hour long naps. For every hour he stopped walking, he pushed himself forwards another mile. Nothing would stop his mission, even if it meant dragging his broken body over a mountain top, he would never falter. So was his duty as a Nu-Arbiter.

Hrothkiir wrapped himself tighter beneath his overbearing distinctive yellow robes, continuing onwards down what appeared to be a somewhat traveled road of sorts. Luckily, he hadn't had the misfortune of having to converse with any outsiders yet, although he had been at the receiving end of many curious stares. Stares he could deal with, he had been trained to ignore passive onlookers. What he wasn't really ready for, was the openness of everything. Everything was just so.. flat.. Back in the Great Swamps, you couldn't move an inch without something being in your way, a fact that made the Swamps so treacherous for those without knowledge of the area. Out here? There was no where to hide, and nothing to blend in with. Even under the heavy layers of his robes, Hrothkiir felt unsettlingly naked. To put it lightly, he wasn't a fan.

As morning slowly turned to midday, Hrothkiir finally came to the end of the road, which ended by an area filled with large heaps of twisted metal and rock, all of which jutted out of the ground at worrying angles in every which way. Well. This is the place. Swamplord Ivrha said to walk three days north, ending at the graveyard of hard slime rocks. This place certainly does match that description.. Now, there was supposed to be a group here that I was meeting with.. Hrothkiir's voice, sounding much like the chittering of a large rodent of some kind, echoed through the now empty Junkyard, each echo becoming more and more distorted. Perhaps I just missed them.. With his mind made up, Hrothkiir moved into the Junkyard, taking special care not to get caught on the jagged edges of metal jutting out of the ground. Just up ahead, one could clearly hear a group of people talking with each other, although, a few of their voices sounded.. wrong..

Hrothkiir walked towards the group of people, before stopping a good thirty feet away. From his position, he was still just close enough to the Junkyard behind that he could flee inside of it in case trouble arose, but also just far enough outside of it where he could be clearly seen by the group. With slow movements, he brought his hands together in front of his chest, the sleeves of his robes covering his hands. Now, he would wait, these outsiders would make the first move. Not him. He doubted there would be any issues, but even still, his grip tightened on the grips of his twin daggers hidden within his sleeves.
